Title: PIE IN THE FACE
Post by: bk on May 12, 2014, 12:16:53 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were like a pie in the face - messy and occasionally amusing, and now it is time for you to post until the pie in the face cows come home.

Good morning, all! 5:30 arrived far too early. I was wide awake at 3:30 and then spent two hours dozing un and off; there was a tune stuck in my head that I have now mercifully forgotten.  I had a strange dream about my siblings, and I think I was back in Ohio. My wonderful sister-in-law Jo had brought home a dog that had just had its vision restored and it was having a lark. Randy and I were up to something. The Macbeths were somehow in this nonsense and Lady M was her usually vain ugly self.

In another 75 minutes I will take a bus to my eye appointment, then proceed to Trinity Place for the first rehearsal of excerpts from Kern's "Oh, Boy!," head back uptown and prepare t go out to see Jason Graae's 7:00 show at Birdland. I would rather fall over than go, but I should be home by 9:00, I hope.

I can't even tell you what the last film I saw that one could be considered slapstick.

Today's "comedy" films are filled with bathroom, gross out and sexual "gags" that IMHO are not funny. From what I read/hear about these films they are trying to top one another with how far they can push the button of gross out.

I really think the Blake Edwards (Director of the above The Great Race) was the last director to make films that had slapstick humor.

Sometimes his latter film worked and other mostly they didn't, but the humor was far superior to any of the comedy.

Perhaps his last great comedy bit in the film was the "glow in the dark condom fight" from the film Skin Deep (Which was basically a hit and mostly miss comedy)

Spirit Airline based here in Florida has rebranded their website to better explain their business model of low cost fair and why they charge extra for baggage, carrying on luggage and even if you want a bottle of water.

They are trying to inform perspective passengers what their actual costs will be. They are trying to improve on their image. An informative page and video. I've never used them because of all the negative things I have read and heard about.

Spent the weekend in Gainesville, TX, attending the Writer's Roundup.

I met some nice folks, sold some books, visited the Frank Buck Zoo and also the location of the Great Gainesville Hanging (1862).

But, it was a long drive (4 1/2 hours) from Austin.

Sorry I've been E&T as I have been a bit depressed.  I lost my health insurance.  None of the usual pablum bandied about the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) is accurate.  It is anything but affordable.  As I have said in the past, I have very little money left each month through SS Disability after paying for rent, utilities, food, etc.  So, it would have been pay for the premium and go without food.  It's the usual sad sack story, I know, but there am I.  I have placed several calls this morning, but I fear that it will be the usual well-intentioned stuff, but as with most everything, you don't have the money, you don't get, unless you are absolutely, positively destitute.  I am just enough over the poverty line to be denied time and again for any Medicaid-like services/coverage, but I barely make it through each month.  The weekend was awful.  I thought why go through everything I have, to be in remission, to get better, etc. and have everything just yanked out from under me due to money.  I know for some that this is sacrilege, but I know from my personal experience that Obamacare is not the panacea that people think it is.

I've spent several hours today rehanging the curtains in the upstairs bedrooms.  I've had them from the dry cleaners for weeks, but just now got around to that task.  As I was finishing the second window in the first room, I realized that they're backwards (design-wise), but at least they match.  In the second room, I got them right and, by the time I was finishing the fourth and final window, I'd gotten the hang of it.  Eventually I'll correct my mistake, but for now they're OK.

She starred in sooooo many fun movies...SUMMER LOVE, JACK THE GIANT KILLER, QUEEN OF BLOOD, NIGHT WALKER, DARK INTRUDER, and just a ton of television in the 50s/60s.

On the other hand, living in Southern Oregon where humidity is quite low, it was so common for the skin on your knuckles to dry out and crack and bleed during the winter months. I do have to say that I don't miss that at all.

No, I am just in the "make too much" on disability category, which is a joke because I can barely meet the bills, the rent and I suppose if I gave up eating altogether, I would be able to afford health care premiums.  Besides, I've been on Medicaid and that doesn't cover the kinds of things I need in my treatment.  I have Native friends who are in another government-run health system, Indian Health Service, and that's another sorry excuse.  The government can't even run a decent postal service or DMV, so where's the surprise that I "make too much"?  The only two options I have right now are keel over dead or go and live on the streets because those are the only two circumstances where I will have some form of coverage.

DR Dan, how very frustrating. It seems impossible that you wouldn't qualify.

When my nephew was on disability during and after suffereing from leukemia, he was eligible for health care through The Oregon Health Plan, which covered everything he needed. I am off to Birdland, but i would rather stay in.

DR Dan M, I had meant to send my sympathy earlier. It's bad enough to be fighting a disease, but I'm horrified and appalled at the condition of this country that you can't be given better care by it. If it's socialism, I'm all for it; I'd rather see my taxes help out people in your situation than pay for a mess in the Mid-East.  While I know life is unfair, you deserve better.

From what I hear the Oregon Health Plan is very good, however, it doesn't mean DR Dan would qualify for it.

Thank you DR Jane for your good wishes.  I hope I'm able to get some help.

I wish I knew where to turn for help.  Maybe you should write the president.

I am home from Jason's show, which was quite fun. I saw some wonderful people like Mary Testa, Karen Mason, Natalie Douglas, Jim Morgan, Alex Rybeck, Klea Blackhurst and several I'd rather not have.  I did see Andy Taylor and Alet, and that was great. I really love John Boswell's playing, and he and Jason have a good rapport.

And now I'm going to bed.  I have another long day tomorrow.

When I came home, I meant to write up an abstract of my paper, which is about the last thing I need to do. That and the table of contents.

But, a copy of the book with photos in it arrived via email and all I could do was leaf through it.

Some of the photos do not look as if they have been touched up at all. Some looked wonderful, like I could lick the screen for all that barbecue. It turned out to be 266 pages long and there's a large picture of the Das Barbecu CD cover in there somewhere amid the ribs and sausages and briskets -- oh, my!

Hello, Gentle Dear Readers.

Just back from our road trip, so haven't caught up yet. I also wanted to let you all know that tomorrow morning I will be having some surgery. Nothing critical or dire, but necessary. And it is outpatient, so I should be home by mid afternoon. But I may not be up to logging on at that point, so I didn't want anyone to be alarmed at my absence between the trip and the medical stuff.

Hope to rejoin you all at the earliest opportunity!

And I only used a few words unbecoming to a Vicar's wife!

The hang of it!  ROTFLMAO!

Dan  I am having a really hard time writing this  to you - your situation makes me so very angry.  People tell me I am a socialist or a communist  when I talk about universal health care such as they have in Canada.  They tell me ridiculous stories about Canadians crossing the border to obtain superior  US health care.... well  my husbands family lives in Canada - and the care  they  all receive under the universal health care is far superior to the health care we have available to us at great cost

It is a crime that you have to worry about this when your only concern should be getting well.  I wish there was something I could do to make it all better

DR Dan, I am so sorry about your insurance situation. Are you in a state that did not expand the Medicaid part of the ACA? The expansion of medicaid was to cover people in your situation, although some states did not implement it, unfortunately.

How long have you been on Social Security Disability?

I certainly understand where Dan is coming from.  When I was approved for SS Disability, I was stunned that I had to wait 24 months before I could receive Medicare.   Luckily I was able to take advantage of COBRA medical from my former employer.   But it still cost me over $600.00 a month to keep that coverage in effect.

Explain the logic of that to me.  You are disabled, so you are unable to work; but you have to wait two whole years before you qualify for medical to help you with your disability.
