Title: THE PROBING OF SITZ
Post by: bk on May 15, 2014, 12:03:51 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both sitz and probed, and now it is time for you to post until the sitzing, probing cows come home.

BK, it's really fun and interesting to read about what you're doing with Li'l Abner.  There isn't a theater group her in Olympia (anymore) that would do that kind of a show...and that's a shame.  There's a lot of theater in Olympia, but no one that does the big, community theater musicals anymore.

I'm hoping that this new way of doing the show will show that it CAN be done.  I haven't really gone into exactly what I've done to make the show leaner and faster and how I've fixed every single dated reference in the show - that's what's always blamed when the show doesn't land.

Just a sidebar on the TOD:

I hate the current economics of Broadway and how the size of the pit orchestra (as compared to the orchestras of Broadway's Golden Age) has been eviscerated. How much more challenging it must be now to be an orchestrator, with such diminished opportunity!

Good morning, all!  I have very little to report.

I have to be at Trinity Church today by 10:30 so we can run the concert and I can hear the singers on mike with the piano for balance.  It's going to be good.  Patricia Noonan, our soprano, is a beautiful brunette with a wonderful voice; I've known our soubrette Meggie Cansler since FINIAN'S RAINBOW, and I love her; she makes me laugh; our tenor, Michael Marcotte, is one of our ROBERTA Collegians and he makes me laugh; and Arlo Hill, our baritone, just won the Lotte Lenya Competition, and he's fantastic, just excellent.  It's been such fun working with all of them.

After that, I want to work on my notes for George Gershwin's PRIMROSE, his 1924 London show we're presenting next week.  Meggie and Michael will be back for that, with Sara Jean Ford, who's on the Victor Herbert Collected Songs, Weston Wells Olson who's currently in LES MIZ, and Tim McDevitt, another one of the ROBERTA Collegians, and a fantastic baritone.

DR ChasSmith, I'm sorry I will not see you today or next week.

Have you all seen the fantastic video of the cat rescuing a 4-year-old boy from attack by a dog? They just showed the video on this morning's news. The cat's actions are amazing; the boy needed 10 stitches, so he couls hae been really mauled if the family's cat hadn't rescued him.

The probed sitz sounds great, and I am all too familiar with the challenge of getting even a four-piece band's volume down to where it needs to be.

It looks like Tams-Witmark doesn't provide info on current and future productions.  I know LI'L ABNER isn't done all that often, and I was surprised to hear that some regional group out in deepest darkest Connecticut did it a few years ago (if only I'd known!) and that it was successful for them.  The person relating that to me said he didn't think they changed any "dated" references, and that it still played just fine -- which may or may not be accurate reportage, so, whatever.  But a director buddy and I have more than once talked about our love for the show, and who knows, maybe after the dust has settled on BK's production I'll be able to kick those conversations back into gear.

I've had the AAA membership pretty much uninterrupted for over thirty years, DR Ginny, and even though I've only called them for something a handful of times in all those years, yesterday's experience was their crowing achievement and will forever be worth every penny.

I, too, feel much safer on the road with my AAA.

While I always have my AAA card on me, I sometimes (seldom, but it happens) leave my cell phone behind.  That is when I feel something will happen and I'll have no easy way to call them.

While I always have my AAA card on me, I sometimes (seldom, but it happens) leave my cell phone behind.  That is when I feel something will happen and I'll have no easy way to call them.

Yesterday the phone AND keys got locked in the car.  Fortunately, I had my wallet in my pocket which made getting hold of AAA and identifying myself one hell of lot easier than it might have been.

What happened was this:  I stopped at a fast food jernt for a small snack and some hot coffee, intending to get right back on the road.  Instead of using the drive-thru, I went inside to use the restroom, then ordered and carried everything out to the car, sat down, and put the key in the ignition.  Then I remembered I needed to transfer the hot coffee to my travel mug.  (I NEVER drink out of those horrid hot paper cups and foul tasting plastic lids.)  I got out to pour it, and being right next to another car, I shoved the door shut with my elbow and walked around the car to do the pouring.

Now, the car had been completely unlocked with the key remote, and since I'd then opened it up, nothing further should have happened.  But a second or so after I shoved the door shut, the car's security system re-locked all doors.  And there I was, with my (ahem) coffee in my hands.  Basically, the security system behaved as though I'd remotely unlocked it but did NOT open a door.  In that case, after 30 seconds it would re-lock.

Talk about a big FAIL there.  The dealer just told me it could be the car's radio going bad (it controls the security system, and it's 12 years old) or just possibly there's a broken wire from the years of door-opening that sent the wrong door-open/shut signal.  I'll be having them check it out tomorrow or Saturday.  In the meantime, not that I'll ever repeat that scenario, but one new procedure is to have a second car key on my person at all times.

And I'm that way about the cell phone, too.  I was a late-adopter of cell phones (I got my first one a few months after 9/11), and I really use them mostly for utility purposes and essentials -- getting and making necessary calls, the occasional necessary text, and having my email with me.  Of course I do a few other things -- sometimes keep up with HHW and HTF, etc. -- but even though I don't live on it all day and night like the Young People do, I never want to be without it.  It really is essential these days.  Another new procedure after yesterday's incident is to use the damned belt clip and likewise keep the phone on my person when out and about.  ESPECIALLY when out and about in foreign lands such as beautiful downtown Carlisle, PA.   :)

When the red-tailed hawk visits our yard, all the other birds, along with the squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits, make themselves scarce.

We often see the smaller birds protecting their nests by chasing the hawks away.

Stange dreams this morning.  I woke up at 8, but decded to go back to sleep.  My very first dream was me picking up a mug of hot coffee and then losing my grip and dropping the mug in my lap (which of course was in bed).  I jumped myself awake and I scared the Hell out of Nicky!

Then later, I was attending (or was in) a production of GUYS AND DOLLS.   I assume it was Jack's production.  The entire dream revolved around my confusion over the new song in the score.  "If That's A New Hourglass, Then Your Time Is Running Out."

OMG.  Dreams.

I'm not making this up:

The dream I remember from last night involved one of those electric sandwich-grilling devices, and seeing vixmom's face on the slices of bread I'd put into it along with a few odds and ends ingredients I was using up.  It was like vixmom was the spokesperson for the device, and this was a commercial.  Sort of.

Do we file this one under "religion"?  Or "erosion of sanity"??

I'm nervous as I'm having a little procedure done on my toe today.  I have an ingrown toenail, the result of not being able to reach my toes after my shoulder surgery.  It is odd how a shoulder injury caused so many little problems with my feet when I couldn't take proper care of them.

I hope I don't regret doing this.  I expect most people wait until the pain is greater than mine or there are more issues.  I am walking slower on the treadmill and not jogging.  To me that is a big problem.

DR singdaw, something about the way you worded it made me wonder if this was this a new hernia operation or a repair to a previous one.

Just curious.  I'm up for one eventually, but at the rate my own ripoff medical insurance is going this year, I'm waiting on anything I can until next year when I can go on Medicare.  Also, for a hernia, I'm quite sure I'll also want to wait till I have a couple of very quiet weeks in which I can move about quietly at home during recovery!

To me that is a big problem.

and up at nine thanks to someone from the film crew shooting at the usual house down the street - NINE o'clock in the morning asking if he can pay me and serve lunch to the cast and crew on the front lawn.  I said absolutely not.

OMGosh, I would have let them do it for free, as long as I could join them! What fun that would be!

BK, why are you so mean to the filming crews. If you were making a production on location someplace, wouldn't you hope that the residents would be cooperative?

Which reminds me of a Roger Corman story from a book about him or from an interview, I forget which.

He was filming TEENAGE DOLL (1957) on location in a neighborhood after dark. The resident of the house they were filming next to turned on his sprinkler, probably hoping to be offered money to turn it off. Working on a tight budget, with no money to spare, Corman started talking loudly to the camer-man telling how wonderful the light reflecting off of the water from the sprinkler will look in the scene.

Seconds later the sprinkler was turned off.  ;D

DR ELMORE what does sheep's eye and licorice tooth mean?

Your guess is as good as anyone else's!  I always thought it had to do with a shy look and  sweet tooth, but  Loesser eplained how he arrived at it in a letter that's printed in Susan Loesser's book about her father, A MOST REMARKABLE FELLA. He wanted a companion word that meant "covetous", fearing "sheep's eye" did not completely convey the exact thoughts of the guy who would be gazing at her. He went to Roget's and found that "lecherous" was a sort of synonym for covetous, but didn't quite like the way it sounded, so he consulted the Oxford English Dictionary and found that two archaic spellings of "lecherous" were "licorice" and "lickerish." He chose the latter.

Also, see this:

It's a stupid commercial they're shooting - it's the same production company every week - like there's only one house in one neighborhood at which to shoot.  I HATE these people.  And yes, they've parked where they shouldn't, once again.  Since I'm gone in a half hour I don't care.

I've had that dream, too!!!

Sure, if it had spread from these other places.  The tests are to catch it early, or in the case of a colonoscopy before it becomes cancer.

Do I remember correctly that you had chemo?  Have you had a bone test to make sure there wasn't damage from the chemo?

It's a stupid commercial they're shooting - it's the same production company every week - like there's only one house in one neighborhood at which to shoot.  I HATE these people.  And yes, they've parked where they shouldn't, once again.  Since I'm gone in a half hour I don't care.

If it's the same people then I'm surprised that they even approached you about the lunch thing. :)

Oh boy was it hot and nice out today.  I'd say mid to high 80Fs probably.  I biked in shorts for the first time this spring.

DR Elmore, I'm glad to hear the concert went well.  I couldn't get it to play on my iPad, but will try tomorrow on my computer.

Here's why I am mean to the filming people - because they are here every week now, taking over the neighborhood, but thinking they can park wherever they damn please when they in fact have VERY specific parking restrictions and an entire lot in which to park - but no, the crew parks where they're not supposed to and it leaves nowhere for the residents to park.  And they are very cavalier about it and even obnoxious.  So, if they try the latter with me, I go right to FILM LA and report them and believe me those cars are moved instantly.  As to the house, there are three people within a two block radius who've registered their houses because this is how they seemingly meet their mortgages.  The problem, of course, is all the other people in the neighborhood who are continually inconvenienced by these selfish yahoos, do not get paid.

Back from a long day.  Did our paper tech, then a run-through - he played with the lights during the run and I can already tell he has to do refocusing and relighting for certain areas.

Well, I must be off.  I'm going to see (not usher!) Yesterday and Today: the Interactive Beatles Experience (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2014/5/15/yesterday-and-today-the-interactive-beatles-experience.html).  My friend Margo and I usually usher, but the Center has started keeping track of the hours that we volunteer and if we get 40+ hours in a season, we get a certificate for two half-price tickets to any performance of a select list of Washington Center sponsored events.  If we volunteer for 60+ hours, we get those plus a free ticket and a half-price ticket, and if we get 80+ hours, we ALSO get two free tickets.  Well, Margo and I both have over 80 hours in, so both of us are using our three, count 'em, THREE free tickets each!  Even though the 60+ level is a free ticket and a half-price ticket, we don't actually need to buy the half-price ticket to use the free ticket, so we're not.  Anyway, tonight I'm a sit-down patron for probably only the second or third time in as many years. :D

Be back later!

Wow...what a concert!  The house was pretty full, but not sold out.  The group is made up of three brothers and a few others.  They said that they learned EVERY Beatles song.  What they do is ask for people to write down their favorite Beatles song and why the love that song, and if they like the reason, they'll sing the song, so, every performance is different.  They just read peoples' reasons and sang songs and the audience loved them.  They guys (and one girl) said at the beginning that they don't "do" the Beatles, they don't sound or dress like them.  They sing the songs as themselves and they're all very good.  The whole show lasted two hours and 45 minutes and the energy just got bigger and bigger as the concert went on.  Highly recommended, if you ever get a chance to see them...unless you hate the Beatles.  But you won't hate these guys. :)
