Title: TWO-A-DAY
Post by: bk on May 23, 2014, 12:52:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were two-a-day, and now it is time for you to post until the two-a-day cows come home - they were going to come home after their MOOtinee, and yet, they did not.

VIBES TO DR LARRY FOR BEST OF RECORDINGS DAYS
Title: Re: TWO-A-DAY
Post by: elmore3003 on May 23, 2014, 04:27:17 AM
Good morning, all! Thank you for the vibes so far this past evening and this morning! We could really use them, so keep them coming!  This recording isnot easy, and I really thought that it would be.

I won't see Rob Berman today since he's not making the trek with me; after hearing Act One and making some comments, he'd be bored to death while Judy and I fight over every change I ask for.  There are a lot of tracks, including the appendix, for Act Two. We actually have a wonderful working relationship, and I've loved her to death for thirty years, but when divas collide . . .

I don't know how long we will go today, but I'm guessing we will work as long as we can to see how far we get.  We most likely will not finish this one until the middle of June.  Still, I think we will give Mr Kern's fans something very nice to remember him by. For those who know the film of ROBERTA - and I love Astaire and Rogers - it may be  bit of a surprise. So, I'll leave here about 8:30 or so, bus to 96th Street, stop at the deli and get a sandwich, and then get on the subway. We're going to begin at 10 this morning.

DR TCB, I'm so happy you felt up to having lunch yesterday!

DR vixmom, you need a day to sleep in and do little. I worry that your limited amounts of sleep are hurting your health.

I'm still laughing over the nuptials of Mikey and George Clooney. The first thing to go would be that Bollywood porn collection. Now that will put Barnum's libido in a state.

Fantastic press and response for LI'L ABNER! Given my mobility, balance problems and physical state, I think I made the right decision in turning BK down, but I would kill to be in LA to see it. I would love to hear David's orchestrations and watch BK's staging and Kay's choreography. I wish for BK nothing but good things and a long life for this show.

So, I have to get my energy in gear and myself together. I keep thinking, tomorrow morning you can sleep in! And I plan to.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Wonderful Weekend Vibes for Everyone!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I can post the program notes here - they're not that long - I've basically said it all here, but here they are:
I’ll keep it short and sweet, as I kind of loathe “Director’s Notes.”  So, let me just say that Li’l Abner has been my favorite musical since I saw the film in 1959.  Yes, I know there are better musicals and I love some of them very much.  But none of them tickle me like Li’l Abner – I just adore the great book by Panama and Frank, and the score by Gene De Paul and Johnny Mercer is the kind that no one knows how to write anymore.
I have wanted to direct this show for decades, but it’s just never worked out.   I’ve recommended the show to several groups and they’ve ended up doing it without me.  When it doesn’t work, it’s always the show that’s blamed.  Well, no.  With a little fine-tuning the show works beautifully.  I had an idea how to do it and thanks to a boatload of talented student actors, along with a few pros I brought in (I’ve come back and directed shows for the Academy and always like to mix it up with students and pros), as well as a great design team, I’m finally doing it.  This is a leaner Abner – the original Broadway show was huge: a cast of fifty-four and a band of over twenty-five, and the show ran over two-and-a-half hours.  We have a smaller cast and the running time is considerably shorter.  And I had this idea that the score would work wonderfully with what is basically a jug band, and to that end I had my pal David Siegel do brand new orchestrations for that kind of band.
And so, at long last, I have gotten to do the show.  Hope you enjoy the result of this slightly different take on the show as much as we have in putting it together.  So, as Mammy Yokum would say: I has spoken!
Bruce Kimmel
My faovirte lyrics from "The Country's in the Very Best of Hands":
    The voters are connected to the nominee,
    the nominee's connected to the treasury.
    When they ain't connected to the treasury,
    They sits around on their thigh bones.
    They sits around in this place they got,
    This big congressional parking lot.
    Just sits around on their you know what.
    Up there they call them their thigh bones.
    Them bones, them bones gonna rise again,
    Gonna exercise a franchise again,
    Gonna tax us up to our eyes again,
    If we gets them off of their thigh bones.
We were denied production rights to MY FAIR LADY for June, 2014, because of a conflict with a professional production.....Indiana State University was also denied.  I can't find any professional production anywhere around us....except for the production that DR SINGDAW is going to go see.
That theatre is nearly 600 miles away.  Former DR JASON told me, when he worked at MTI, that only professional productions are considered in granting licenses, and that if two amateur groups wanted to do the same show in the same building on different floors on the same night,  they could do so.....
I'm up after a good night's sleep.  Here's Mark Evanier's final take on the show:  http://www.newsfromme.com/2014/05/23/druthers/
In his review he mentions a song that wasn't in the script. Which song was he referring to?
Do you mean this? -- "plus a number that weren't in the script" -- because there he's referring to a number of laughs or gags, not a song.
What would you say to some gratuitous photos to help move us along?
A few phone pics.  First, the obligatory shot of Trinity Church as seen from down the delightfully narrow Wall Street, one of the delightfully narrow winding streets of the financial district.  That's the side of the NY Stock Exchange building on the left.
Loved all the photos, Chas!
The Guthrie - a great regional theater - is producing My Fair Lady this summer. I'm going to have to go, because I am embarrassed to admit that I have never seen the film, or a stage production of the show.
And I have wanted to see the Guthrie, so - it's a no-brainer.
I saw a touring version in the late 70's with Edward Mulhare (Rex Harrison's Broadway replacement) and Anne Rogers (Julie Andrew's West End replacement) with the original set and costume designs
My dad said that when he was in the army, he was in New York one time and was able to see the show on Broadway right after Rex and Julie left.
Well, as long as its playing the Guthrie and you've always wanted to see the Guthrie.  Try to concentrate while you're in the Guthrie or you might as well be watching "Pure As the Driven Snow" if you allow yourself to be overwhelmed by your surroundings.
Which reminds me of Tallulah Bankhead saying "I'm pure as the driven slush".
From DR Vixmom:
Quote
unlike most other states, we  do "wet closings"  so buyers and sellers, their attorneys, their realtors, the title closer and the bank attorney all gather at the same time to sign all the papers  and  exchange keys for cash
We did this in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  We also did it when we purchased our Massachusetts house.  Leaving I can't recall if the buyers were there, probably.  What was shocking was to find out we would not get our money right away to buy the new house the next day.  We had to wait several hours for them to expedite the process before driving to Pennsylvania.  That was the time I fell asleep driving.  Thanks goodness I didn't crash.
I had one of those days.  At least my car and I made it safely to the dealership.  Sometime tomorrow they will run a diagnostic and hopefully find out why the "take the car to the dealership" lights are on and why the car is doing screwing things.  They said it sounds like it is misfiring.  It jerks really hard, vibrates on and off, raced once, and when I got off of the freeway it felt like it was stalling.
Boy, was I relieved when I pulled into the dealership.
I walked to Baskin Robbins and got an ice cream cone, even got a full scoop vs my usual junior size.  Keith met me there instead of the dealership.
My day ain't over yet. Have an early eve audition/meeting with my old bosses at Crystal. Hoping it is brief so I can have one more shot at seeing Abner. I tried to go last night only to be caught in a freeway snafu that went on forever. Infuriating.
Fantastic press and response for LI'L ABNER! Given my mobility, balance problems and physical state, I think I made the right decision in turning BK down, but I would kill to be in LA to see it. I would love to hear David's orchestrations and watch BK's staging and Kay's choreography. I wish for BK nothing but good things and a long life for this show.
So, I have to get my energy in gear and myself together. I keep thinking, tomorrow morning you can sleep in! And I plan to.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Wonderful Weekend Vibes for Everyone!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I liked the orchestrations very much. I know yours would have been brilliant, too, but you can rest assured that these were done well. IMHO, that is.

DR Jeanne, I have no dubt David's orchestrations are fantastic. I've been a fan of his for a long time. We both worked on the 1999 Radio City Christmas Show, and I loved his work for that.

And I am home from the wars!

Those HHW vibes work, and I send thanks and love to all you DRs who sent them my way today!  We got through all of the body of Act Two by 7:00 tonight (14 numbers), and we have only to finish up three Appendix numbers, Exit Music, and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (non-show version). Things went so smoothly, it was scary.

For those not-so DRs, next time you ask me for vibes, remember: this elephant never forgets!

Thanks.  I am curious.  I suppose you can't find out if Judy knows she messed up big time with the dog ;)

The Guthrie - a great regional theater - is producing My Fair Lady this summer. I'm going to have to go, because I am embarrassed to admit that I have never seen the film, or a stage production of the show.
And I have wanted to see the Guthrie, so - it's a no-brainer.

DR Singdaw, you are in for a treat!  Well, concerning MY FAIR LADY, anyway - I've never seen The Guthrie.  I've seen MFL at least 3 times on stage and the film countless times and I always cry at the end.

I always cry, too.  I was certainly shocked when Eliza died.

LOL!

DR elmore I am very glad your day went well!!!!

Thanks, Nursie! I'm happy I survived it. Things went so smoothly today that we kept thinking, if we say anything good, we'll jinx it.

I expected at several points in the past three days for Judy's head to spin 360 degrees, spit fire and throw me out the window!

I'm heading home.  I'm going to wander through Costco a bit first...just because I can. :)

Until later.

I was in BEEKMAN PLACE when I was in my twenties.  It is one of the only plays I did, that I remember nothing of the show or even who I played.

Went to the San Antonio Symphony's Patriotic Pops concert tonight. A few pieces, such as Sousa, were expected, but much of the program was movie music from John Williams, Tiomkin, etc.

My favorite part was a Glenn Miller medley in which the conductor joined in on clarinet, plus a sing-along to songs such as Yankee Doodle Dandy and Grand Old Flag.

The concert was superb. I mean, really superb. The singers were excellent, all off-book, and it was semi-staged. However, a lot of people didn't appreciate the modern music. The audience for the second half was noticeably smaller.

I was thrilled.

You specify everything that you want on your burger (or hot dog) and except for bacon or cheese, without any additional charge.

I had the Little Bacon Cheeseburger.  The "little" versions only have one burger patty.  The regular versions have two patties.

It's a sit-down place.  Not high-brow, at all.  It was also very loud...the music was loud and the workers were all yelling the orders and what was one each item, things like that.  I was able to read a couple more chapters of "Red Gold," but it was a bit of a struggle to concentrate.

The burger was pretty good and pretty messy.  The fries were greasy and probably a little undercooked, but not too bad.

Nothing like Red Robin.  I don't know about any other Five Guys places, though.  It's kind of like a Dick's Drive-In but smaller than the one next to the Seattle Center (the only one that I've been to).  Their fries reminded me of Dick's fries.

Back from a fun show with a completely sold out house of people who ate it all up - HUGE laughs throughout and many ovations.  And tonight we obviously had Abner fans, because almost everyone in Typical day solos got applause as they entered.  A couple of musical things tonight - one tempo a bit too slow for my taste and some ragged stuff in the ballet and we'll run that stuff before tomorrow's matinee.
