Well, you've read the notes, the notes were onward, and now it is time for you to post until the onward cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SPUME!
-
First after BK.
Huzzah!
-
I am up early working on my lighting plot....which I think is finally finished.
Nice news from everyone yesterday.
And of course continued congrats to MR BK & Co. on their ABNER success!
-
DR TCB the rental company is sending your costume and it is paid for, so you can be in the show if you want to. Just come on opening night, you don't need to come to any more rehearsals.
-
TOD:
Will Mr Sherman talk about Miss Annette Funicello during the gabfest?
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Glad to hear that the final two Abner performances rounded out the run in such a positive way! :)
-
We have not heard from DR Dan M in a few days; I am hoping that all is all right with him. Perhaps he has company for the holiday weekend.
-
Yes, to answer the question from last night, Gypsy was community theatre. Which is why I was so surprised that they had a full and very cracker-jack orchestra.
-
A most amazing theatre score. And those orchestrations by Sid Ramin and Robert Ginzler!!!!
-
Would anybody on this board recognize a photo of Ticker Freeman?
Among other things, he was Dinah Shore's accompanist for many years.
Unfortunately, there are no identifiable photos of him on the internet, but I've come across one that I think is him. I just need somebody to verify it. [The photo is for my forthcoming biography of Dinah.)
If you can, please send me a private message and I'll send you the photo.
I'd post it on this board, but I've never really been able to figure out how to do that.
Thanks.
-
Good morning!
-
Oops! That "Good morning" was from me. Kate was still signed in on my mini iPad.
-
Good morning, all! I had two strange dreams last night: my mother and the Macbeths were in the first one, which occurred, I think, in a hospital. In the second one, yjr retired British opera singer Sarah Walker, who was my first choice last year for Aunt Minnie on the ROBERTA recording, her husband and I were entangled in a murder of a rock singer. I remember the three of us getting into a car in some wintry farm region and pulling out of the driveway. I could see a car in my back view mirror, and I woke up. And now that the laundry is in the washers, I'm having some coffee.
I have no plans for today. I'm going nowhere and accomplishing little. I will listen to the Act One mix of ROBERTA, read a bit, and do little else.
In Manhattan, The Village Light Opera Group uses an orchestra that is half volunteer and half professional, I believe. It generally sounds good, but one poor amateur violinist can make the professionals sound like learners.
-
Good morning to all

Perhaps BK can
He did work with Dinah Shore on a variety series and perhaps Ticker also worked on the show.

Please excuse this following
Singdaw posted a photo yesterday and he commented "Oh My"
I made the comment that they are in the wrong order,
I feel that perhaps no one else got what I believe are both are humorous remarks that SINGDAW and I made.
Singdaw obviously was making a Wizard of Oz reference.
Dorothy: Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh, my!
I said they were in the wrong order. Lions and Bears and Tigers
If people did get it I apologize.
-
I dreamed about Carol Channing; it was not pleasant as I recall.
-
Now I get it DR MIKE! HAHAHAHA
-
I dreamed about Carol Channing; it was not pleasant as I recall.
Was Johnny Depp playing her, as he's indicated he would like to do?
-
Good morning, all.
Looks to be a pretty nice day in the mid-70s here.
-
Very glad to hear that ABNER closed really really well.
As of course we knew it would! :)
A fine achievement, Mr. BK, sir, and here's to finding a way to extend its success.
-
Thanks to people's little Memorial Day Weekend events here and there, I will be largely E&T today -- and perhaps a little less largely tomorrow.
-
Thanks, Bruce, for putting on such a great show! Mark and I enjoyed it immensely. I wish the entire evening had gone so well, but we experienced such a comedy of errors that I thought we were in a bad sit-com. We've never had so many things go wrong in one night. They were little things, but oh soooo many, you had to laugh so you wouldn't cry. Most notably that we got there an hour early, specifically so we could sit in the front row, only to find that I had only printed the invoice, and not actual tickets. I had completely forgotten that my printer crapped out just as I was printing those tickets, and I meant to get new ink and try again later, but completely forgot. I put the invoice in out little ticket drawer, Mark grabbed it and thought that was all we needed. I looked at it after we parked and knew it didn't look right, but Mark pointed out there was a barcode, but I should have trusted my instincts . We had all that time to get tickets at the box office, but I didn't think to ask. Dumb, dumb, dumb. Thank goodness the seats were tiered, so we really could see just fine, and as you know we moved to the front after intermission. There were many laugh-out-loud moments in the show and everyone was terrific.
-
Good morning. Glad to hear Lil Abner had a great run!
-
Good morning, all.
Congratulations on a successful run of Li'l Abner, BK.
-
First real lazy day in who knows how long. Nothing on the agenda after church. I think I may nap and watch a DVD or three.
-
Okay, I'm off for the afternoon to sit in someone else's shade, eat their hamburgers, and sip a cold one.
Onward, Abner! (Our new rallying cry.)
-
Oh, wait just a minute.
This will never do. One more, okay?
-
Two!
-
I'm up and have been up since eight for some unknown reason. I stayed in bed, gave some thought as to the note I'll be writing to the entire LACC Theatre Academy faculty, and shall now complete the commentary.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! Home from Rob & Mary Linda's church and lunch with them at City Barbecue. We're all regrouping here at home before ML and I head to the Dayton 'burbs for a bridal shower for DN Lauren.
-
Working today. Hardly anybody has come into the store.
-
The laundry was put away an hour ago, and I am now working on my notes about the reconstruction of ROBERTA for the recording. When I get bored, I'll turn on the TV and watch a DVD.
-
Yes, to answer the question from last night, Gypsy was community theatre. Which is why I was so surprised that they had a full and very cracker-jack orchestra.
Oh, it was a cracker-jack orchestra! That explains it! I was wondering how a community theatre could afford a full orchestra--I'm used to a small band. Don't know how the theatre TCB mentioned does it. Thanks for clearing that up, Sing.
-
Good Sunday to all! Congrats on a great run of Li'l Abner hopefully some of us will be able to see that production some day. Presently, I'll eat some lunch, and head out for a walk. Yesterday, I did a 20 mile bike ride, which was glorious in many ways. Today will be a lovely walk, then it's back to church for the 6:00pm service.
-
Perhaps I can find a cracker-jack car. Or a drone. I'm quite fascinated with drones.
-
One must think outside the box. (Not to be confused with BK's web series.)
-
TTFN.
-
Goodness! It looks like everyone slept late. Or maye the East Coasters have gone to bed early. Still, only 40 posts?
-
And the word of the day is: SPUME!
Isn't that a song from GUYS AND DOLLS?
-
DR TCB the rental company is sending your costume and it is paid for, so you can be in the show if you want to. Just come on opening night, you don't need to come to any more rehearsals.
Thank you, but it sounds like I would be one of the few to show up. Or is that just at rehearsals?
-
BK (I know it isn't Wednesday) do you think that most of your college students would follow the show to another venue? What about your pros?
-
I love you a bushel and a peck
You bet your purdy neck I do
A doodle oodle ooh doo
A doodle oodle oodle ooh doo
-

Just rehearsing, Jack!
-
Hmmm, here is a question! Of course, at the moment, I am the only person here who could answer it..........
What actor or actress was your first movie or TV crush? (The one that made you swoon. Maybe decorated your walls. The one that you dreamed about. The Leslie Parrish of your youth.)
-
I would take a few of the LACC kids if we moved, and certainly the pros. In fact, Barry has some theater in Mt. Gretna, where he did Grease, interested in Abner, so I'll be talking to them this week. That would be for 2015.
-
A most amazing theatre score. And those orchestrations by Sid Ramin and Robert Ginzler!!!!
Indeed!
-
On castrecl, that "critic" initialed JC knows nothing; he's completely into whatever is the flavor of the month. He's the Baskin Robbins of morons. I am amazed that I let him irritate me so., but everything he writes is like a bull's red flag.
And here's my own thought for the day:
-
I love you a bushel and a peck
You bet your purdy neck I do
A doodle oodle ooh doo
A doodle oodle oodle ooh doo
I know this is unusual in inventive 2014 casting, but I'd imagined TCB in one of the men's roles.

Exactly! I thought he was playing Arvide!
-
Will we never get to page 3?
-
Here's my current favorite video; a new one (to me, anyway) of Sylvia doing NOBODY
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFUWgY9R6NY
-
Well, it's a post on the way to page 3, anyway.
-
That's, what, a 30-piece (or more?) orchestra!
-
And a staircase Mame or Dolly would envy!
-
Well, Time Warner is screwed in my part of town, I have no television, and I just got into a fight with technician because I will have no idea if I screwed things up until service is resumed.
She kept telling me to unplug more things and I said I didn't want to until I knew service was back up and I would then know if i'd screwed things up. I hate this shit.

What's weird is, the TV is out but the computer's fine.
Some of those morons on Castrecl have no sense of humor at all.
-
DR Cilla it is great you are totally pain free!!!!

Some musings from a nice gent who saw our show last night: http://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=9298
-
You'll see that I corrected something he was in error about - that we should have costumed General Bullmoose in a General's outfit. I think it's pretty apparent General Bullmoose is a member of the private sector, which is the entire point of his character :)

I saw that he corrected his comments. Still, those are the kind of love letters everyone is glad to get.
-
Twice now I've tried to write a story and both times it has been eaten by WordPress. I want to scream.
-
Nice musings.....
And of course the song is a nod to a phrase popular in the 1950's:
What's good for General Motors is good for the USA.

Watching a good documentary, "Bettie Page Reveals All," in which the model narrates her own story.
-
Until today, I had never heard of Sylvia. :P

Back from an impromptu gathering of relatives. We sat around and talked, drank, and ate way, way, way too much.

Thank you! I believe I have got the plug situation repaired, but the Time Warner cab;e TV still seems to be out of order.
-
And my TV is back! I may watch THE NORMAL HEART tonight at 9:00. I did not see the last revival, but i did see the original at the Public Theatre. Concetta Tomei was amazing!
-
So our next family bride-to-be has been feted. Lauren had a great time and received many nice gifts, mostly for the kitchen. Her groom will enjoy using them ;)

Here is Lauren with her sisters, Amy and Jennifer:
-
Nice pic, Ginny.

Happy Sunday, all!
First and foremost, Congrats to BK and the cast, crew and musicians of Abner for their grand success. I'm still cursing that my one chance to see it was hijacked for no good reason.
It seems to have been that kind of week. The gig I had last night that kept me from the final performance of Abner was one of the biggest disasters we've ever had on our corporate show. Our boss in NY decided it would be okay to have a party DJ be our sound person, and after a lengthy and unsuccessful sound check, we almost walked. The boss got on the phone and talked us into staying, but it got worse. A Three Tenors send up with three big voices, ended up with only one working mic outside, no lights and an audience who wondered why the hell we were there. Oh well, I get aid the same but how embarrassing. We won't be getting any gigs out of that one.
Okay, I must get back into the Kritzerland music, which is wonderful. Lyrics, lyrics lyrics is the new mantra.
cheers! :D
-
Nice pic, Ginny.
Thanks, DR John G - I love those girls!
-
Geez, RYacko. Our church sound man is 13 years old, and he would have done a better job!
-
I agree, DR Laura. DR Ryacko, that sounds like a true nightmare.
-
Just watched the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS. I still miss Maestro Kunzel.
-
I forgot that last year when my money was running out I canceled Shpwtime, so I can't watch THE NORMAL HEART tonight. So, I'm watching PHILOMENA. I love judi Dench.
-
Finished the commentary, had a chili, cheese and onion omelet and an English muffin and some tap tap tapioca pudding.
-
Wrote another few Sherman questions, then actually watched the first motion picture on Blu and Ray in over two weeks, I think - the divinely wacky Carry on Cleo.
-
Page four? Really?
-
Just saw Color Me Barbra, which DR Kate gamely watched with me. She said she enjoyed it.
-
And my TV is back!
Excellent!
-
Here is Lauren with her sisters, Amy and Jennifer:
Cute :)

What a frustrating shame.
-
Earlier we watched the concert version of Wonderful Town with Audra McDonald, Thomas Hampson, Brent B and Kim Criswell. Really great !
-
Just saw Color Me Barbra, which DR Kate gamely watched with me. She said she enjoyed it.
I don't know why she wouldn't.
-
DR ryacko - that's why show business is so glamorous....
AND NOW - the season finale of MAD MEN
-
It isn't really the season finale - it wasn't designed or written to be, I don't think - I think it's the arbitrary season finale dictated by AMC in their greed to squeeze out another year for the show.
-
I forgot that last year when my money was running out I canceled Shpwtime, so I can't watch THE NORMAL HEART tonight. So, I'm watching PHILOMENA. I love judi Dench.
I thought it was on HBO.
-
Found a copy of the cookbook from Antoine's in New Orleans. I have fond memories of eating there, so I picked it up for cheap. Just made Shrimp Creole for dinner. The recipe was easy, as so many in the book look, yet the flavors were incredible. Nice dinner.
I'm enjoying getting back into cooking. It's been too long.

Rely? Damn! I could have watched it! Well, I loved PHILOMENA and I have HBO On Demand, so maybe I'll watch it tomorrow night.

Still fighting this stupid throat thing I keep falling asleep
-
I did spend a few hours outside weeding my garden I could have gotten a lot more done if I started before 6 PM buut after church I took an unexpected nap and lost the whole glorious afternoon
-
I am still very tired
-
Happy to hear things went well for Abner
-
Sorry to hear things went so badly for Ryacko
-
Glad your TV is Back Elmore
-
Glad your pain is gone Cilla
-
G/D Vibes for JRand
-
TCB - I think you should go - sounds like it may be a one man show
-
John G I really liked Neverwhere but I liked the book better. I seem to remember that the BBC production actually came first and Neil Gaiman wrote the book afterwards... but I may be wrong, I usually am
-
One of these days when Ben and Anthony are on the Island of Long I really must get together with them
-
I wonder if I can make it to page 5
-
The church is having an International food night in honor of Pentecost. We are supposed to make a food reflecting our ethnic heritage . The Vixter and I will have separate tables. I need to bring a Hungarian dish while the Vixter is cooking something British
-
FIVE!!!
-
we also have to decorate our booths and tables- boy am I have a devil of a time Hungarian stuff
-
anybody have a Hungarian traditional costume to lend me?
-
Actually I think the hats were the impetus for my grandparents to leave the old country

Good evening, after a nice long mostly enjoyable day in suburbia, where people were truly reveling in the summer weather.

Barbara Cook singing "Make the Man Love Me."

It's that good.

I'd agree.

;D ;D
-
That is truly a wonderful video, DR John G. Thanks so much for sharing it!
Much better than the audio recording (of a much later vintage) that I posted some weeks ago.
-
We thoroughly enjoyed tonight's Mad Men semi-finale.
-
Since we do not have HBO, we are hoping that The Normal Heart will eventually appear on home video. Along with the Six By Sondheim documentary.
-
~ ~ ~ EXTRA-STRENGTH FEEL BETTER VIBES ~ ~ ~ for DRs Vixmom and Jeanne!!!
-
Did anyone watch THE NORMAL HEART tonight?
Opinions please.
I wasn't crazy about it, but I may have some rethinking about it as I may be too close to the material since I directed it in January.
I thought it was a little heavy handed, no humor and showing things that were only talked about in the play took away the power of the scenes.
Don't want to get into specifics in case people are still planning to watch it
-
Watched Mad Men, which was very good and makes the AMC decision even more crass. Then watched the first half of Rollerball, which I've never seen.
-
I've also been nodding off consistently throughout the day and evening.
-
A real lazy day today. Watched four DVDs, read about 30 pages and napped.
And now to bed.
Good night, all.
-
Congrats to BK on the success of the successful LI'L ABNER!!

I bought on eBay and just received this past week an HBO Emmy For-Your-Consideration 29-DVD set that included "The Normal Heart." I just watched it last night (or was it the night before) and thought that it was very good. I've never seen the play, but I do have the 2-CD recording that was done 20 years ago.

Some musings from a nice gent who saw our show last night: http://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=9298 (http://cahighways.org/wordpress/?p=9298)
That's great, BK! He certainly went into detail about the show.
-

The screener copy that I got is copy-guarded, so I can't copy it. :P
-
Until today, I had never heard of Sylvia. :P
She's one of those singers who had a minor career for a short while, but then was never heard from. :-\
-
George, if you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay for that 29 DVD set?
-
Does your set also include the Sondheim documentary?
-
I'll bet George is off watching TV.
-
Hmmm...
-
I suppose I should try
-
...to get us to the next page.
-
That shouldn't be very hard.
-
Actually, easy to be hard.
