Title: MISSING ABNER AND THE WEIRD LITTLE DAY
Post by: bk on May 28, 2014, 12:17:06 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes missed Abner and were weird and little, and now it is time for you to post until the missing weird little cows come home.

A question for BK about your on-line seller(s):  Can't you limit how many any one person/seller buys from you?  In my job at the library, I buy what the selector select, but I have encountered sellers who have limited the number of copies of a particular title.  It's not unheard of.  You could institute a policy...maybe after these next titles you could let your sellers know, but you have every right to do that.  Then you could sell some of the copies to them, but not too many.

Good morning, all!  I was wide awake at 5:30, and IU drifted in and out of consciousness until 6:30. Around 8:30, I will head down to Trinity Church for this morning's rehearsal, and head home around 1:30.

Once I'm home, I have absolutely no plans. If I remember, I'll stop at my local jeweler at 86th and Broadway to get a new battery for my watch. I hope to see my super today and pin down at date to finish this bathroom ceiling. It's going on three months and I'm really sick of my apartment chaos.

More coffee!

And the Australian tour begins on June 10!  I thought I was going to be busier with this, but the moral is think about your budget before you decide on the repertoire. I do have one chart in the concert, so that's nice.

Currently in my area there is a commercial running that has a guy explaining all the scams he runs...and one of them is the telephone a person about a relative in jail.....

bk -- It's really none of my business. And I certainly don't know the particulars.

But --

Is an apology that is forced out of someone (under threat of legal action) really an apology worth having?
They can say all the words you want to hear, yet not mean a word of it.

I was listening to the Rare Tracks Bruce Kimmel CD in the car yesterday an have questions about three of the tracks.

1) Tap Your Troubles: what was happening visually that had people laughing?
2) The "Barry Mannilow" medley. Are the song used actually longer than the 30 seconds or so that we hear and have they been recorded?
3) Also the opening vamp of Tappin' Away sound a little bit from Bachelor Bills?

And just as I was pulling into my driveway, the heavens opened up.  It's a deluge.  Just looked on the radar, and it's one small storm, just large enough to cover part of my town.  Incredibly intense.

Lots of people lost power in the thunderstorms last night.  I didn't, of course.  (Rule #1 being that having spent money on a generator, you'll never need it again.)

But I heard sirens like crazy in the middle of the night, which is very unusual for around here.  Even now there are still police and firetrucks a mile away, just kind of sitting around, and I don't have the slightest idea what went on, or is still going on.

1. We were tapping badly but with great energy.
2. No, that's the length of each number and obviously they were recorded since they're on the CD.
3. I'm sure it does :)

But --

Is an apology that is forced out of someone (under threat of legal action) really an apology worth having?
They can say all the words you want to hear, yet not mean a word of it.

I think people should not be allowed to just behave in any way they feel.  When you know the story I think you'll understand why I want everyone involved to own up to their misguided actions.  But I'll know more when I speak to the lawyer.

Oh -- I was thinking about that this morning.  While a real genuine apology is something you'd never know if you're getting or not, a clear acknowledgement (i.e., admission) of the wrongdoing, with a vow to NEVER, EVER repeat such action, would still be of value.

I may have to make a bold decision for Kritzerland soon - as I predicted to every gluttonous label four years ago, if you keep going down your path you are going to kill this for everyone - and so it has come to pass, with every label's sales down (save for the biggest titles) and that includes us.  We are struggling and when my big online dealer told me his needs for our latest two titles, I told him that after those I may reassess how I'm doing things.  What that means is, that perhaps beginning with our next title I will only make our titles available at Kritzerland exclusively.  That will not sit well with my dealers, but at this point I have to think boldly - I have led the way in many ways with the other labels, so much so that one of them regularly and routinely rips off the way we do our press releases and even the way in which I respond to guesses on the film music board - it's funny and sickening all at the same time.  Get your own routine, say I.

At the beginning, Kritzerland was unorthodox - I was the first label to stop selling to brick-and-morter stores so that I would never have returns.  Guess what?  Soon thereafter, all the soundtrack labels save for Varese also stopped.  Well, my guess is if I try this new thing and it works for me, that everyone will soon follow suit because none of us can survive with these numbers.

On the other hand, I sold huge numbers of Follies CDs because this was really the only place they could be found - there really aren't any online show dealers anymore, so somehow close to 3,000 people bought from us.

Greetings, all!

And Happy Birthday DR ArnoldMBrockman!

BK, I'm keeping lots of positive thoughts for a good resolution for you on that issue you are handling. I'm so sorry you've had to deal with despicable acts from people who have no business treating anyone that way, much less you. I'm glad you are getting both friends' and legal advice on this as well. Onward and upward.

Thank You

From DR John:
Quote
My mom seems to be the one who stopped it and she did so after getting a hold of my brother-in-law, who convinced my dad that my sister had indeed taken her son to school today, so he didn't have time to get to Mexico.

Good for her.  Has your father always been this stubborn that he wouldn't wait for your mother to track down your nephew prior to sending the funds? If so, maybe it isn't a sign of dementia.

My hiking group went up to Grizzly Peak this morning, elevation about 5,000 ft .

Until it began to snow, and we turned around, we saw lots of wildflowers.  Had we been dressed for cold and snow we probably would have finished the hike.

We then drove to the park in town and had a lovely walk.

Had some soup and a sandwich for my meal o' the day, have been dealing with wrangling the seats for our event - finally got a good seat count from the theater, 308, so I was able to get some of the waiting list confirmed.  I still have fifteen or so seats left that I'm holding, but I'll release those tomorrow and we should be able to get in almost everyone from the wait list - and then my advice will be for the other folks to just show up at the door.

I spoke with my dad this morning. He was lucid. He detailed everything that happened yesterday. And he's embarrassed to the core by it.

I told him that what he did showed how much he loves the members of his family and what he would do for us.

Both he and my mother put a stop to it as it was unfolding, but since they don't have caller ID, they have no way of tracing the calls. It turns out that not only did the first caller use my nephew's name, he also used the word "Opa," which is what the nephew uses to call him. So, whoever the scammer was did some homework.

It turns out that CVS will refund one of the money cards my dad bought, and the rest are good to be used wherever, so they aren't out any money. But, oh, is his pride hurt.

Another good point in all of this is that my folks may give up their landline phone and get a family plan of cellphones, which means will be harder for scammers to get to since the number will be unlisted. It will also give them caller ID.

I doubt caller I.D. would have helped.  It is scary they knew Opa is his name, no wonder they were able to scam him.  I'm glad money wasn't lost and the crooks didn't get any.

There are blocks for phones, or get them something with call waiting.  I doubt they will be scammed again.  My issue with dropping the land line is that we both can't get on the phone at the same time.

What you said to your father is perfect.  Vibes he lets go of his embarrassment.

DR Jane, Rob will often call my cell phone or Richard's and ask to be put on speaker when wants to talk to both of us about something.  Like when he and Mary Linda became engaged (good) or when his company went out of business and he lost his job (bad).

Yes i agree that you handled it well. And thankfully no money was lost. I guess the moral of the story is if someone calls do not send them money.  But crazy how they knew so much info.

Speaker phones are hard for the single caller to hear anything.  I am ok on my end but not when someone else uses them.  I am pushing more to use skype or facebook video but only for the boys, not when friends or a business call comes in.

When the day finally comes that we move I expect we will not get a land line.

So BK, do your big online dealers want fewer copies than before or more copies?

I am stepping in for an absent soloist with a choir next week at an outdoor choral festival in a park, hosted by the local NPR station.

The online dealers are taking less and less - that's the problem - and if it continues, I just think I'm better off doing exclusive releases on our site alone - make more money that way and just have to educate people that that's the way it's going to be.  It's a dangerous gambit but at this point it may be one I'm willing to make.

I once got to hear Maya Angelou read her work. Packed house here in town at one of the universities. She made everyone feel as if she were reading just to them. She was almost as good a performer as she was a writer.

I read all of her autobiographical books and her cookbook, but not all of her poetry.  I think my favorite was "Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas," which was largely about her touring Europe in a production of "Porgy and Bess."

It's a scary move, but it sounds sensible. I don't know when I last bought a new CD at a store or when I last bought a new CD through any store but amazon. The rest have been direct order from the record label.

I grew up on the soundtrack recording of WEST SIDE STORY, so I am learning all sorts of things from Cheyenne's WSS.  Such as, what I always knew as "Tonight" is actually called, "Only You."  And the actual piece called "Tonight" is what I always knew as "Quintet."
