Well, you've read the notes, the notes jumped into June, and now it is time for you to post until the June cows come home.

Today, I will be working concessions from 11:00 am until probably 5:30.  What was I thinking??  I signed up for two shifts because no one signed up for any.  It's really an easy gig.  I'll bring my Kindle and read while the shows are going on.  I'll also be able to get something to eat in between the two shows.

DR TCB - well, some of the snubs were directed at me. There is some serious dysfunction in the DH's family. Mix in some ardent religion issues and a gay couple, and you've got a party!
But the issues aren't confined solely to us.

Still, everything came off civilly.      :)

Today will involve major transportation logistics (mainly due to a grand event visited by 200,000 people that is located just a few blocks from where we live), a church service, two rehearsals at a different church, and then a 2.5 hour road trip to return my mother-in-law home.

Easy, peasey, lemon breezy.      :)

Good morning, all! I slept late, and it will be a rather lazy day for me. I have no plans, beyond another listen to Act One of ROBERTA and lounging about.

No sherpas arrived, but I did put away the accumulation of books littering the apartment since last August.  There;s more cleaning I want to do, but I'm stymied until the bathroom is in shape and everything cluttering the apartment is in its usual place.

DR Cillaliz, that mural of Paul's is really stunning. Thanks for sharing it. I'm sorry to hear that your relative is lingering in hospice, but I'm guessing, since he's talking to her, that his wife has arrived and she's waiting to take him with her. Perhaps his relatives should talk to him and give him permission to die. My last words to my dad were, I'll love you and miss you forever, but if Mom says to you, come with me, i want to you to go.

DR Jennifer, what a good day for your niece!

Well DR SINGDAW yes you would think that I would have some say......but NOBODY knows anything about lighting except this ONE person, you see, and we just don't understand the concept.

I will ask him that question....but since he is directing LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS for August, I am guessing that he is thinking ahead about where he wants the lights for his show.  And of course, since all of the NEW equipment is upstage, he doesn't have any dimmers for the backstage strip lights, so the crew is basically working in the dark most of the time.

I wish somebody would release the movie onto DVD (or Blu-Ray) in the United States.

I'm going to make some dreadfully decadent later today:  Donut bread pudding with a whiskey sauce.

Someone brought donuts into work on Friday and, well, they were going to be tossed. I figured this was a better solution.

I will be having quite an international day today. Around noon I will be heading over to the Sikh gurdwara as several of our India-US members were invited.

Then, this evening my down the hall neighbor Khadija, who has now earned her MBA and will be returning to Saudi Arabia next week, is having a party, with Arabic food served, for her friends here in the apartment building, which includes me!

Last night I watched two really fun low budget sci fi thrillers on Amazon.com.

THE UNKNOWN ISLAND (1948) starred Richard Denning, and Virginia Grey. Somehow I had never seen this one, but it was very enjoyable, and in color!

The other was DESTINATION INNER SPACE (1966) starring Gary Merrill, Scott Brady, Sheree North, Mike Road and Wendy Wagner. How they ended up in this is anyone's guess, but they must have owed some favors. Again, it was great fun!

I know I saw this one as a kid, but other than the monster I really didn't recall anything about it.

Did I ever tell this story?

Many years ago I was buying a new Honda. I brought along a friend who can be quite shrewd. But instead of helping he just sat there, engrossed in a magazine! I really liked the gray one, but they'd have to order it and it'd take about 6 weeks. They had a blue one, equipped the way I wanted it, on the lot. A good second choice. I knew they wanted me to buy it and NOT wait the 6 weeks. I kept saying, "but I really like the gray one." I saved $2500 by buying the blue one--but not right away.

Jeanne, I sometimes wonder if just by having someone tag along with you when you make a large purchase (even someone just reading a magazine) can actually get you better treatment.

I think so. In those days, I felt rather intimidated by the whole car purchase/dealer thing. I needed some moral support. But I expected more than I got! It actually was a good lesson in negotiating for me. All I did was take one fact, that I'd rather have the gray one, and repeat that statement. Some years later a neighbor had the same car, but in gray!! Ugh! I'd just remind myself how much I'd saved.

Gee, I hope Jane comes here and posts her pastry photographs, too - would be a crying shame to only share them on Facebook where they are not seen by nearly as many as here.  Also, one of her friends posted about the pastry and from whence it came: Do they make gluten-free?  What is this with gluten-free?  Just another irritating fad that will be forgotten in six months to a year.  I do understand that for some it is a real thing, but the other 90% who've jumped on that bandwagon are doing it just because it's a fad.  You mark my words when the gluten-free business is gone a year from now.  The best part is when these faddists say "Oh, I feel so much better eating gluten-free."  Sure you do.  Until the next craze.  Like people who used to do Atkins - "I feel so much better doing Atkins."  Sure you do.  I'm here to tell you as someone who was stupid enough to try Atkins, I felt soooo much worse.

Thanks DR Elmore it was very rewarding to have her hard work pay off. This is her first year on the swim team. Some of the other kids have done it for 3 or 4 years. I also did not realize until last week but her team has the best ten and under swim team in the province. Plus she was so happy to win. Then on the bike path on the side of the street there is the road on one side of the bike path and the side walk on the  other side. I was riding and an old couple were power walking on the side walk. The lady starts to jog onto the bike path right as I am about to pass her. And of course she does not torn her head first to look. I could not really swerve as it is a fairly busy street.

Luckily I yelled "watch out" while moving a little. She was fast enough to jump on the side walk. She did thank me for yelling out. Although she was close to getting hit. She jumped out unfortunately at the wrong time.  If I had been passing a kid I would have had my hands ready on the brakes. But I would expect anyone else to look before walking onto a bike path.

We've had rain and thunderstorms all day.  It is so nice to see the rain, we need it so badly.   But when they said we could get hail, I took all the pots of flowers I've gotten in the past couple weeks and either put them in my entryway or the garage.   I think I could probably put them back now, but better wait for the weather report

When we got home today Rob and Mary Linda were here working on his old room, so I guess it's time to tell y'all why - they are moving into the upstairs of our house next month.

Our house is a large Cape Cod with 2 bedrooms and a full bath on the main floor, along with the living/dining room, kitchen, family room and attached garage.  The upstairs is 2 big rooms and a full bath and Richard and I rarely go up there - we live on the main floor like a ranch house.  With Rob looking at PA (physician assistant) school a year from now, they're going to try to take a chunk out of her student loan debt before taking on his.

So, Rob has been working on his old room, which will be their bedroom, and Richard and I have tackled the other room, which will be their living room.  We decided today to do a little sprucing up in the bathroom by installing a new sink/vanity from IKEA and a new floor.

The room Richard and I are cleaning out has been our "catch-all" for about 20 years.  I have shredded tons of paper, including cancelled checks - remember when we used to get those? - from before we were married and the worksheets my students did when I taught library skills in the late 80s/early90s.  The AAUW garage sale is getting another load (or 2) this week.

Don't be so fast to put gluten-free down.  It's no fad.

I've been gluten-free for almost 2 years and it does make a difference.

The lighting man told me Friday evening that he would not be there at the Open House Today.  I told him that was fine, we wouldn't be using lights anyway.  We just planned to use the work lights for the songs we presented.

Before the event started, I was sitting in the theatre talking to Sky Masterson who had been helping him with the lighting.  I asked Sky why they were set up with three for backlighting and one in front and told him what I thought about it.  Sky was talking a bit, and I told him I still didn't understand, it wasn't working for me.

NOW I want you to remember the movie A FACE IN THE CROWD and what happened at the end.

Yes, the choir mikes were on in the house, and Mr Lighting Man had indeed decided to come to the Open House and was sitting back in the dressing room listening to everything I said.

So - sometimes being an ass is its own reward.....he seemed to be fairly good-natured about it, but I should never have been speaking that way, if I wouldn't say it to his face, it shouldn't say it at all....and I felt very SMALL all afternoon.

I really dislike the choreography in the Carousel movie....whew....Rod Alexander.

He certainly worked all the time, God knows why. But then, the whole film of CAROUSEL is so misguided it's pathetic.

The movie is certainly not perfect, but isn't "pathetic" going a bit too far?

I love the film version of CAROUSEL!

Really? It could have been so much better although the nitial casting of Frank Sinatra was really moronic.

I've never been able to watch the movie all the way through. Liked the TV version with Nathan Gunn.

Just watched a pair of Hammer Noirs, Stolen Face and Blackout. Both excellent for what they are, low-budget crime dramas.

The plot of Stolen Face was fairly twisted: Plastic surgeon Paul Henreid falls in love with Lizbeth Scott, but she rejects him. So, he grafts her face onto a criminal with a disfigured face and marries her. Then Lizbeth shows up and his life becomes hellish. If they had written it today, the two lookalike women would go off into the sunset together.

I haven't gone gluten free or wheat free, but I have cut down on it. I now make my sandwiches out of gluten free bread, and have to say that I do not miss regular bread at all...and, in fact, I prefer the Franz brand of gluten free bread. I don't prefer the price, however. :(

I am not sure yet if I detect any difference in the way that I feel, but I didn't make the change for any other reason than always hearing about how bad wheat is for you.

I have noticed that the night after I had pancakes for breakfast I slept very badly. And  the night after I had some other wheat food I slept very badly. Not enough information yet to know if there is a connection or just coincidence. Personally, I am  hoping it is just coincidence, as I didn't really have any plans of totally staying away from wheat...just cutting down.

Speaking of wheat...I had a very nice time at the Sikh gurdwara today. The owner of Taj Mahal had invited the board members of our India/US group to attend today as he was supplying the food (they serve food 24/7 at Sikh temples). I ate some Indian bread there, which is where the wheat comes into play.

And this evening I attended the party that Khadija, our Saudia Arabian tenant put on for us. Her eldest brother was there also, as he had travelled from Saudi Arabia to attend her graduation. His name is Latif, and I nicer man could not be found, and he has a great sense of humor. It was great fun to chat with him.

Khadija will be staying on in Salem until July then will return to Saudi Arabia where she plans to get a job in the financial sector, in the field of research...finances she finds too boring.

The food was fantastic...chicken, lamb, yogurt, salad, and baklava for dessert.

Here is a photo of myself, her brother Latif, and Khadija.

Although I'm sure it's different for everyone, there are two articles you can easily find on Google (or look at Jane's Facebook page, where I posted both of them), both of which basically say there is absolutely not a shred of proof that a gluten-free diet is either good for people or isn't anything but a placebo in terms of people feeling better.  They say that people who suffer from certain things should be gluten-free, but as a popular diet fad, it's basically what all these things are and it will remain until the next thing happens.

I'm going to make some dreadfully decadent later today:  Donut bread pudding with a whiskey sauce.

Someone brought donuts into work on Friday and, well, they were going to be tossed. I figured this was a better solution.

Re-purposing donuts seems like an award winning idea, DR JohnG!

When my sister made apple fritter bread pudding not too long ago, it was absolutely delish...even without a whiskey sauce.

Yes, I will tell you:  I bought a new 1998 Ford Escort and it cost $14,400.  Because of Costco, I only paid $100 over the invoice price...no haggling.  Also, Ford was having a 0.9% interest deal, if financed through Ford Credit, so I saved a boatload of money there, too. :)

That same situation happened to my mom...she wanted a certain color that the dealer didn't have (I forget which), so she was able to negotiate a MUCH lower price for the exact same car in white.
