Title: ART ISN'T EASY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes weren't easy nor were they art, and now it is time for you to post until the arty, easy cows come home.

As Bruce Kimmel's close personal friend Stephen Sondheim once said:

Art isn't easy.
Even if you're smart.
You think it's all put together,
But then something falls apart
Art isn't easy.

This sounds like a telegram that might have been sent by Noel Coward or Groucho Marx.

Last night was a good performance.  We are selling lots of tickets.  It will probably be my best Box Office performing show in a few seasons.  I have been doing plays, so I don't know how to act with an almost FULL HOUSE.

Good morning, all.

'Tis a miracle I'm up and at 'em, considering I didn't get home and go to bed till after three in the morning.  I was at a friend's "home theater", spot-checking some things on a couple of films, and then watching a very entertaining movie straight through.  All great stuff.

But I had to be up for a phone call this morning, so here I am.

Coffee!!

Good morning, all! I nodded after I turned off the alarm at 7:15 and it was suddenly 8:30! Who knew?

I have to call my pharmacy for this month's meds, and then make a trip to pick them up. Then, at 3:30, I'm meeting a Facebook friend for a snack at 83rd and Amsterdam.  This will be our first actual meeting, so I hope we don't throttle each other.

And that's my day!

"The Ghost of Gershwin" sounds to me like the book and lyrics should be by George and Ira, another new Gershwin jukebox musical with one more insert of "Someone To Watch Over Me."

Who cares if there are a million other Gershwin songs no one knows that might fill the bill? Nope, gotta have "Someone To Watch Over Me." I'm sure it's in whatever new royalty-making scheme the Gershwins are cooking up. I'm surprised Bess didn't sing it in their last Broadway bastardization of "Porgy and Bess!"
Title: Re: ART ISN'T EASY
Post by: elmore3003 on June 07, 2014, 06:17:22 AM
Excuse me, it's now "The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess!"

I guess that's so you know it's not Sigmund Romberg's "Porgy and Bess."  Or Bock and Harnick's.

To the followers of literature here -  have you been keeping up with the work of Karl Ove Knausgaard, whose 6-volume book "My Struggle" seems to have taken Norway and New York by storm?

Here's the review of volume 3.

He seems on his way to becoming a J.K. Rowling-size sensation here.

No. They do not call. When I called it in, I told them i would be there in a couple of hours.

It's status quo. I'm also neurotic as hell but I feel as though I have to learn to walk again in my career since I spent 12 years working for foundations and no one knows me.  It's not easy and I'm too damned old.

Back from a long visit with the vet this morning. They had no available appointments, but they squeezed us in. Poor DD Zach had stuff coming out of both ends this morning - had never had that problem before.

They couldn't find anything blatantly wrong, including x-rays, so that's good. We now have meds, and we're scaling him back to bland food for a bit. He's almost 14 - very old for a big dog - and has made it thus far with no medical issues to speak of.

Greetings, all, and Happy Saturday,

BK, I'd heard a few things about the musical you mentioned seeing last night. They even called me to replace, but I passed. It was good to hear your first hand report. I just hope they get the necessary changes in there when they can. I've been involved with many readings of new musicals, and as you point out so clearly, very few seem to get them even near right.

A recent reading I did, which was shaky at best, is now asking for re-read. And since the book writer lost her collaborator and my role was severely under-written (fine by me in this case), she's sent me the revisions and asked me for feedback on the new scenes. The tough part is, there was already so much wrong with the setup, I don't know where to start.

And, BK, it's especially true with what you said about stakes. There are none in this story. She created an immortal who is described as unpredictable and lightning tempered. Then she has him chasing a girl for over a century (hello urgency?) and making absolutely no progress without any apparent obstacle of any kind. And his song in the first act is okay for set-up, but the second act song is the very same song from the first with new lyrics, but moves him not one inch forward, emotionally or in the action. Suddenly, Batman becomes Rick Moranis (and I know that's not what she meant it to be).

Tough part is, I know I'm going to have to tell her this in some kind fashion. Calgon take me away.  :D

And don't get me started on a casting shock I had this morning. In the words of BK - Oy and Vey and Vey and Oy.   ???

My copy arrived, too!!

(Which is great to report, after a recent CD that took a few long side trips before making its way home to Papa.)    :)

The envelope protected it perfectly, and the Mail Lady was kind enough to not force it into the mailbox.  As with occasional oversized packages, she put it into a plastic bag and tied that onto the box.

I am now off to work in the Box Office for a couple of hours.  I always reserve the best seats available, but there are some people who think we are keeping secret better seats until the last minute and don't want them to have good seats.....

I do not understand why they would think that.....I always say I will give them the best available....but they argue and want a seat that is already reserved/sold or belongs to a Season Ticket Subscriber......

Then I got all the sheet music and got it to the singers so way ahead on that front.

Then I started a movie, then got ready for dinner. Began driving around five fifteen which was plenty of time to get there by five forty five.

I felt so bad for my niece today.  They both get bitten by mosquitoes so easily.  The younger one got 5 really bad ones while i was watching her.  I don't know why but i never get bitten.  Does anyone know of any natural remedies i could try (something i might have at home).

Went swimming for the first time this season. My nieces' pool only opens next weekend. But all the pools in my area are free this weekend and next. They one near me is always very cold.So we tried a new one. But it was freezing too.  My little niece didn't like it. But my older niece and I went swimming for around 2 1/2 hours. I will probably be sore tomorrow.

The temps this weekend have been sunny and 80s. Very nice.

We are watching Dustin Hoffman's film Quartet, but we will have to break off to attend a dinner date with a friend.

I loved this film! My opera friend Diana Montague said she did not believe Maggie Smith as a retired opera singer for a moment; she held her head wrong. I wouldn't know.

Nothing that has worked for me.  Try googling it, there are plenty out there.

I keep Benadryl spray to use right away.  I know people who say the best thing to use after any bite is a paste made from meat tenderizer.

Ceremony was OK. Taped "Pomp and Circumstance." Short speeches that said little ("Be a lifelong learner."). The reading of 240 or so names as we walked across the stage. Those of with a masters got our school shawl in the new school colors of orange and black plus a graduation medal. Diploma will be mailed. Then there were a pleasant reception afterward, which was basically a meal served on small plates.

I find it funny that I traveled from Texas to upstate New York for brisket. But it wasn't bad. It wasn't barbecue, though.

Thank you all for the good wishes.

Jane, I don't know if I'll do anything differently because I have the degree other than use the information I learned in future work and life.

Good morning. I am up early just in case there is a little tap on my front door.

There was indeed. We went to the arboretum. Then in the afternoon DR Sandra and I saw The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. I hear it is one of Elmore's favorites.

Three of her friends came to help

Her menu was shepherd's pie,(with HP sauce in case anyone wanted some)  fish and chips (with Sarson's malt vinegar) and a trifle (made with Bird's custard)

You can't see from this angle but those flaps on the side  were shingled roof eaves.

the cake was really good and everyone loved the story that went with it..

Rigo Jancsi was a famous Hungarian gypsy violinist. In 1896 while in Paris, Jancsi played for Prince Josef and Princess Klara. Fascinated by his swarthy good looks, she fell in love. Klara left her husband and children to follow Jancsi who divorced his wife. The affair didn't last but the cake Rigo created with a confectioner in Klara's honor did - Sutemeny Rigo Jancsi. It remains a favorite Hungarian sweet.

I would recite the above and then end  it with " This is a typical Hungarian love story, two ruined marriages, a disastrous illicit love affair,  but all ends happily with rum and chocolate"

:)

I got up at 7:30 and went to the grocery store to pick up a few last minute things  then came home and cut up 8lbs  of meat into inch  cubes... (about half the size I normally would  at home  but since everyone  would be grazing  across 16  tables I wanted to keep the portions small)   I made a marinade of dry red wine, minced garlic and beef broth and then popped it back in the  fridge

Had an amazing Ruth's Chris dinner - New York steak in sizzling butter, a little lobster mac-and-cheese, a little lyonnaise potatoes and a salad, topped off with a few bites of some chocolate exploding thing.  I actually wasn't that full when it was going down, but as soon as I got up from the table I thought I was going to explode like the chocolate exploding thing.

I've been home almost all day.  Yesterday, I got a text from Shelly, the property manager of my condo complex, asking if anyone would be willing to help with getting the pool ready for opening.  I said that I could help put together the tables that she also asked about.  She bought lunch and we put them together.  The instructions were fairly easy to understand, but it took the two of us.

Neither...would you want to clean that much glass??

Back from a long visit with the vet this morning. They had no available appointments, but they squeezed us in. Poor DD Zach had stuff coming out of both ends this morning - had never had that problem before.

They couldn't find anything blatantly wrong, including x-rays, so that's good. We now have meds, and we're scaling him back to bland food for a bit. He's almost 14 - very old for a big dog - and has made it thus far with no medical issues to speak of.

~~~Quick Recovery Vibes for DD Zach!!~~~
