Apparently the "In Memoriam" segment happened; it just wasn't televised.

Here's the list:

Good morning, all! I very much enjoyed the Tony Awards with major exceptions, but I have to say it really offends me when the band starts playing to tell a winner to get off the effin stage yet we had to put up with two rather poor numbers from shows that may never get to Broadway next year. It reminded me of a Tony broadcast around 1981, when a Jule Styne song from "Treasure Island" was performed. Well, I'm still waiting for that show!

So, today I see a dermatologist at 9:45, then I meet Rob Berman at Toyland around noon. Then I head home.

DR ChasSmith, the best orchestrations award went to a score played by 9 instruments!, basically a piano plus obbligato (supposedly, the composer isn''t happy unless there's a piano banging away in the soup) and rhythm. Go figure. I was sure Jonathan would win it. I gather from Facebook comments that the triple threat composer-orchestrator-conductor made several bitchy comments about the Tony's ignoring "Britches of Madison County." After the TV ad with Pasquale and O'hara screeching to a ponding piano, I decided I'd rather listen to Menzel.  But . . . I'm making it a rule that wherever Ms Menzel is, I'm not. I laugh when I watch her and cringe when I hear her.

I didn't like CABARET the last time around: too much attitude of little boys showing their mother dirty drawings and saying "Aren't we naughty?"

I didn't mind the ALADDIN clip; I have no idea if that's the number in the show or something spatchcocked for the broadcast. got the impression Casey was trying to give the number the madness and frenzy of Robin Williams in the film. I'm not sure I want to see it, but I felt it might be a better musical than all of the earlier Disney messes except for THE LION KING. I liked it better that BALLOTS OVER BROADWAY.

As for Audra, did anyone not see that coming? Why bother with the category? Just give her the damned award.

Scanned through the Tony show. I extended the taping for 30 minutes in case of over run. Guess what it didn't happen. It cut off just as the best musical award was going to be presented. Now I'll never know who won!

Here's the blurb and we're live:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere release for one of the most beloved and classic films of all time:

IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE

Music Composed and Conducted by Dimitri Tiomkin

“STRANGE, ISN’T IT?  EACH MAN’S LIFE TOUCHES SO MANY OTHER LIVES.  WHEN HE ISN’T AROUND HE LEAVES AN AWFUL HOLE, DOESN’T HE?”

It is surprising to think that one of the most beloved movies of all time was a box-office disappointment during its original engagement.   But, over the years, It’s a Wonderful Life found its audience – a huge and enduring audience ¬– and became one of the most beloved works in all of cinema.   It’s a Wonderful Life is now seen as the classic it always was, revered by people all over the world, a staple at Christmas, and a movie people watch over and over again without ever tiring of its simple and beautiful message: how our lives touch others’ lives in profound and wonderful ways.  It is one of director Frank Capra’s crowning achievements in a career filled with them.

Despite its somewhat less-than-stellar performance at the box-office, the film garnered some excellent reviews and was nominated for five Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound Recording. It won none of those but earned a Technical Achievement Award for Russell Shearman and the RKO Special Effects department (for its use of simulated falling snow).  But in the end awards didn’t matter, for while it took a bit of time to happen, Wonderful Life entered the public consciousness and has never left it.

Dimitri Tiomkin wrote a wonderful score for Wonderful Life, interweaving original themes and quotes of popular music to great effect.  But, as sometimes happens, Capra made lots of changes in the editing room. He cut several cues (letting those scenes play without music) and rearranged where certain cues appeared; he removed sections of cues, and even tracked in music written for other films.  But the score as written is exquisite—as heartfelt and moving as the film.  And even though the way in which it’s used in the movie works beautifully, hearing it complete (including unused cues) is a special treat.  It is filled with Tiomkin’s wonderful sense of film and character and drama.

This is, surprisingly, the world premiere release of the original tracks for Tiomkin’s score.  Tiomkin had a set of acetates for the film, some of which were in good condition and some of which weren’t.  They were filled with partial takes, aborted takes and full takes.  Through careful editing, we were able to piece together everything that was provided to us and Chris Malone, our restoration expert, did a breathtakingly great job on it.  Once before he saved for Kritzerland a score many thought could never be released – A Place in the Sun – and his work here is even more astonishing, resulting in close to fifty minutes of pure Tiomkin heaven.  While a handful of cues are still a little problematic in terms of acetate noise, the majority of them have been cleaned up without sacrificing any musical or recording qualities and are quite stunning to hear.  We have also included several interesting bonus tracks.

And so, at long last, here are the wonderful original score tracks to It’s a Wonderful Life.

It’s a Wonderful Life is limited to 1200 copies only and is priced at $19.98, plus shipping.

CDs will ship by the last week of July, but we’ve been averaging three to five weeks early in terms of shipping ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

DR Jennifer I have never heard of a pool closing the deep end.

Outdoor summer pools are different from indoor pools. At outdoor pools here there is 25m of pool. But then usually there is also a separate deep end for diving boards. And they alternate between having diving or deep end swim.

At the pool I was at yesterday the deep end is separate and tied off from the 25m pool.

At all the indoor pools i've been to the deep water is part of the regular pool. For instance at the indoor pool i go to there are 2 X 25 m pools. One is all not deep (you can stand at both ends). The other is very deep at one end and really really really deep at the other. But people swim in both.  When swimming i actually usually prefer the shallower pools so i can stand at both ends.

I love Idina Menzel. And love Alan Cumming (loved the Cabaret revival when I saw the revival last time it was on Broadway).  I do love Hugh Jackman but prefer Neil Patrick Harris' Opening Numbers.  loved seeing Les Mis.

I didn't love many of the musical numbers (Alladin). But did love Beautiful and Carole King.  Loved Idina. Loved the musical that won.  I think the Rocky number could have been interesting, but not how they did it.

The thing I dislike the most is that I want to see more of the stuff at the end. I like closing songs. I liked what Hugh did with the Best Actress nominees. But it was so late. I don't want to see those things at 11pm when I'm tired. And I hate that the most important acceptance speeches always are rushed because the show is going long.

I only started watching The Tonys at 8:45pm because I was babysitting my younger niece.  My older niece was at her swim team gala (4 1/2 hours long).  She looked so pretty (she was all dressed up). She was beaming because she won an award for Most Improved Swimmer on her swim team (15 exceptional kids).

She was telling me the story of when her coach was up there giving the award. The coach said, "it is this girl's first year on the swim team" (there are only 2 girls in this category).  Then she tells me that her coach said "and this girl did amazing at the finals last week and finished first in the front crawl"... So my niece tells me she was sitting there listening and then in her head she was like, "oh yeah that's me!!" ":)

I liked the numbers from BEAUTIFUL and VIOLET and GENTLEMEN'S GUIDE TO MURDER....

Good morning, all, and I do hope it's a good one for us all.

Ah, the Tonys. I enjoyed Hugh Jackman as host this time around, more than I had before. There was just something joyous and effortless about him last night. He went out with no apologies and had a great time. I was puzzled at first with the hopping opening, but ended up liking it very much, even the quiet nod in the elevator to Neil Patrick Harris. And I did love his sung nominations for those two categories.

I agree with BK (and many others) that doing numbers from show not yet on B'way was a bad idea, especially the seeming Peter Pan/Dreamgirls mash-up. Seriously, whose idea was that? And the Sting number was not the one to do to lure people to that show. He'd done a different one from his show on Letterman a while back with a big group. That song was rousing and incited some real interest in the show, which is currently in tryouts in Chicago. And to do those "coming to B'way" songa, they cut out Best Score, and other creative awards. Can you imagine, if this were a Sondheim year to win for say "Sweeney Todd", relegating him to a 30 second soundbite, barely in the telecast? Oy to the nth power! Also, they cut out the In Memoriam, which I know upset many.

I would also have loved to have seen one number from Bridges of Madison County instead, since it was a winner for the score, even if it was just Kelli O'Hara and Steve Pasquale in a duet. However, I did see that BK answered someone else's question about this on Facebook, and in doing so, said that the show would have to pay a large fee for that performance on the Tonys. I guess, after having to close so recently, they had to cut their losses.

I was doing the live voice overs for The Actors Fund Benefit Viewing Party, before, during the breaks in the telecast and after, honoring Barbara Cook. Ms. Cook who is mostly in a wheelchair at 86 is still singing gloriously. One of the most touching moments last evening was Amanda McBroom, singing a song that she wrote, one that Barbara recorded as well. The song is "Errol Flynn", and it is a touching memory of Amanda's father, who was a B movie actor who worked close to stars like Errol Flynn. It is also a homage to all of those artists who work all their lives and never achieve greater recognition, and pass their dreams on to their children. So touching.

Good morning, all! I very much enjoyed the Tony Awards with major exceptions, but I have to say it really offends me when the band starts playing to tell a winner to get off the effin stage yet we had to put up with two rather poor numbers from shows that may never get to Broadway next year. CD's here as well.

I am going to work on some sound effects for STEEL MAGNOLIAS.

I have asked a friend at the radio station if he can make the ANNOUNCER dialog excerpts for me, and he is working on it.

I don't like to wait until the last minute.

It is very strange to be home on a Monday evening.

Tuesday morning is our trash and recycling pick-up, so Richard and I just hauled a mountain of stuff down to the curb.  In the process, I found a couple of Rob's toys in the garage that I've cleaned up and will take to the garage sale tomorrow.  We are also going to Dayton tomorrow to donate a carful of business-appropriate men's and women's items to Clothes That Work.

We are very thankful to Rob and Mary Linda for the incentive to do all this purging!

It's been fascinating I'll say that much.  At nine-twenty I had a call from someone regarding the letter sent this morning.  However, the person calling was not someone who'd actually gotten the letter, but the supervisor of someone who had.  He informed me that I'd been sent a letter on May 15, one that had to be signed for, via UPS and the USPS and that I'd never responded to it.  I informed him right back that no such letter had ever come to me by any delivery service and that since the address it would have gone to is one where they sign and deliver to me, that it simply either wasn't sent or somehow both UPS and USPS lost it, which I found doubtful.  He said he'd have the person to whom it was addressed (well, one of ten people) send it to me via e-mail.  Ten minutes later, I had it and finally had in writing what it was all about, which was exactly what I thought it would have been about from day one, but which no one had ever approached me or told me in any way, shape or form.  The person who sent it asked me to call at my earliest convenience, which I did.  Never mind that the letter, whether sent or not sent (certainly not delivered) was dated over two weeks after the whole situation had begun - that seems preposterous to me.

Anyway, I had a twenty-minute conversation during which I gave context and tone to everything that was in the letter.  The person took notes as I was doing so.  In the end, I think it was pretty clear to the person what kind of fellow she was talking to.  She was very nervous at the beginning, probably because of my letter, but by the end I think she just wanted to put a period on everything and get out of it as gracefully as possible without further incident.  She said she had a few more people to talk to but thought it could be wrapped up within two weeks, and that if I had any documentation to send it to her.

As it happened, I did, and I sent it along, as it gave credence to my side of things and showed perfect evidence of tone and how misinterpreted and misrepresented it had been.  But thanks to the attorney, I also said that two weeks was two weeks too long, that she now had my side of it, had talked to many people and that the only one she should talk to is one person and one person only (not me, obviously) and that should put an end and a period on it.  And she actually stated to me on the phone a statement that as far as she could see that after being given context there was nothing to really be done.  So, hopefully this will come to an end very soon.  The person did apologize several times.

Good morning, all! I very much enjoyed the Tony Awards with major exceptions, but I have to say it really offends me when the band starts playing to tell a winner to get off the effin stage yet we had to put up with two rather poor numbers from shows that may never get to Broadway next year. It reminded me of aTpny broadcast around 1981, when a Jule Styne song from "Treasure Island" was performed. Well, I'm still waiting for that show!

I vaguely remember that.  But I very distinctly remember Maureen McGovern singing "Tell Me on a Sunday" from the show to open the next season, "Song & Dance."
There were there previews that time with the three composers each at a grand piano. Who was the third?

cy coleman playing a song from "13 Weeks To Broadway"  the song was Hey You In The Back Row.  I may have the titles slightly askew but they are close.

"So, other than that, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?”

Let's just say it was quite an eventful gathering.  It was just one thing after another and we ended up laughing a lot.

Well, in all fairness, his flight on the way up was cancelled.  For the return flight, he was sitting at my brother's house and looked at his ticket and noticed that his flight was leaving in an hour an 20 minutes, from an airport an hour and a half away.  Not going to make that one.
