Well, you've read the notes, the notes were beyond the valley of the tired, and now it is time for you to post until the tired cows come home from beyond the valley.
-
And the word of the day is: GNATHIC!
-
Topic of the Day:
Alan Menken (and lyricists)
Ahrens and Flaherty
These are the first ones that I can think of. There will be more, I'm sure.

Last month, I bought the iTunes download of the new live, concert version of "West Side Story" for $11.99 because the physical CD was going to be about $47 dollars from Amazon. Amazon now has it for $37.52. However, San Fransisco Symphony's own website (https://www.shopsfsymphony.org/shop/product.php?productid=2022?utm_medium=eStoreLP&utm_campaign=WestSideStoryCD&utm_content=WestSideStoryCD) sells it for only $29.95! AND if you order it before June 16, you get free shipping. I went ahead and ordered it. I really do want the physical CD (which has a 100 page booklet), and the iTunes download was only $11.99, so it's all a bit less than the original Amazon price...and I still have a bit of my income tax refund left. :)
-
And now, I must go to sleep. Today, I'm taking my car in to get serviced. I need to bring it in by 8:30 am. The place I'm taking it is not the dealer. It's pretty close, though. They're just probably about a mile away from me. We'll see if they find anything.
Good night, all.

Today, I am the recipient of surprise tickets for Orchestra Hall. So at 11:00am, I will be taking in Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Amongst other things. :)

Morning all.
That is all.
-
good morning to all
-
i don't have any new favorites of composers out there
-
Thursday morning greetings! Another rainy day here in SW Ohio, good for puttering and purging. I may have to shop for Mom later today, too.
-
It's another day!
-
Good morning, all! I stayed up too late and as a consequence got out of bed later than I prefer. I'm ready for more coffee.
My morning is uneventful, and then I will go to the NYPL and look at items in the Otto Harbach papers. I really hate the fact that the hours are later and I cannot be there earlier than noon. On the way there, I will stop at my doctor's office and drop off the EMG results. I think I have another errand as well. At the moment I've forgotten what it is, but perhaps it will come back to me.
Okay, more coffee!
-
OK, I've done some AAUW work, ordered DN Lauren's (and Jim's) wedding present, and now it's time for a basement walk.
-

-
Good morning, all.
I can remember one crazy but oddly not-unpleasant dream, which involved me being about to embark on an unplanned 30-mile errand that had to be accomplished on some kind of motorized bicycle...in the snow! But the weather was actually quite nice so that didn't seem to be a problem. There was to be a longer trip, or something, following that, but I think the dream changed course before any of that actually happened.
You know what? Now that I think about it, it's just as well I'm awake!
Coffee!
-
I had a weird dream, too, last night, something about summer theatre and a diner/shake shop. The only person I remember in the dream was Ben Davis.
-
Post #19, at just past noon ?
And the last one was nearly two hours ago?
-
OK, I've walked 'round and 'round the basement for 30 minutes, folded my laundry, and emptied a couple of shelves for Rob and Mary Linda to use for storage.

From DR Cilla:
Didn't mean to scare everyone away with talk of OJ, but hey they were posts
I found it very interesting the trial was a learning experience for you and your perspective of the trial. I always wondered if the prosecuting team was picked for their inability to win the trial out of fear of a riot.
-
OMG, has this site been DOWN, or what? Ignore my earlier post. I think this explains the lack of activity.
-
Oh dear once again words have become links.....I have to disable that extension....whatever it was.
-
From DR Cilla:
Johnnie was inspiring, not about the OJ case but about Geronimo Pratt, who he spent his entire career trying to free. He believed an innocent man had been convicted and eventually was able to get him released.
This is admirable & always nice to see the other side of a person. On an emotional level I find it difficult at times to understand how trial lawyers can defend someone guilty of such a horrendous crime. Yes, I obviously believe OJ did the crime.
-
I wish I had recorded the Dateline special
-
The G/D performance was okay last night....we had a bus load of 40 people who were arriving late, but they did call....so I held the curtain five minutes, and then I talked until they all got in their seats. It was not a joyful way to start the show.
-
OMG, has this site been DOWN, or what? Ignore my earlier post. I think this explains the lack of activity.
Just for the record, I wasn't able to reach HHW or Kritzerland for a good hour and a half, except for one brief interval when I was able to post just that.
-
And now, I must go to sleep. Today, I'm taking my car in to get serviced. I need to bring it in by 8:30 am. The place I'm taking it is not the dealer. It's pretty close, though. They're just probably about a mile away from me. We'll see if they find anything.
Good night, all.
Well, they found something. The right outer tie rod needs replacing and it will need an alignment, but it'll only be about $325. Not too bad. They'll be able to get it done today by 3:00 or so.
-
They always find something, DR George.
Always.
But it's good when it's not something horrendous, that's for damned sure.
-
Hell's bells! That took us all the way to
PAGE 2. Finally!!!
-
Let's hope that means our long national nightmare is over.
-
Good afternoon, all.
Enjoy the Mahler, Singdaw. THe symphony here just did No. 5 over the weekend, but I was out of town. They always wait until I leave to do the good stuff.
-
I will now check on what the problem was this morning.
-
I got almost ten and a half hours of blessed sleep - and one of the few times I did not get up once during the night. Boy did I need that.

TOD:
Big fan of Flaherty and Ahrens, especially Ragtime, Once on This Island and the Glorious Ones.
I like some of Jeanne Tesori, including Fun Home and Violet. (Not Shrek, Caroline or Change, or too many of her songs for Millie)

Good Day all:
TOD:
BOUBLIL, SCHOUBERG, AND KRETZMER for LES MIS
FAVORITE SCORES:
Almost all of them from LES MIS!
-
BK, have you ever done an evening of songs from jukebox musicals? You could have fun with songs used in Beautiful, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Good Vibrations, Movin' On, Motown, Baby, It's You, even shows that use older material like Play On, Happy New Year, Crazy for You, My One and Only, etc.
-
And I am home from the NYPL. I may be heading back in the next couple of days to do some digging on Historic Newspapers On Line.
My postman just told me the young lady delivering the post yesterday epically screwed up the mail on his route and he was doing some damage control today.
-
We have that here, sometimes, where a substitute carrier will deliver mail to my house number but the one on the wrong street. The fact that this has happened not once, but on several occasions over the past few years, rather blows my mind.
-
Enjoy the Mahler, Singdaw.
Thanks - I did! It was marvelous!!!!
The Symphony No. 4 on the first half was also spectacular. Kevin Puts. He won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 2012 for his opera Silent Night.
-
it'll only be about $325.
Aren't you sorry you purchased West Side Story now? ;D

This Saturday is a milestone day in mass transit here in the Twin Cities. The opening of the Green Line light rail, which will take you from downtown St. Paul to downtown Minneapolis in about 40 minutes. You can drive this distance in about 20 minutes, but at rush hour the traffic can be tremendous - not by LA standards, but still... Plus the cost and time of finding parking. With the light rail, no need to worry about those things.
The nearest stop is about an 8 block walk from our home, so it will be quite convenient.
Also, there is a stop right in front of the downtown church where I am working. We are hosting a drum circle outside on the front steps on opening day, and I'll be participating. We will be encouraging passersby to stop and join in. Should be interesting! :)

ChasSmith, do you know when the next Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble will be?
-
Tonight is show 4 of 7.....so we shall see what we shall see.
Hopefully the audience will be in a jollier mood. We are having glorious and beautiful weather which certainly helps.
I shall return.
-
A Kritzerland jukebox show is a GREAT idea - perhaps that will be our August show.
-
Had a cup of soup and a sandwich, neither of which was as good as usual, got the attorney-adjusted letter, went through it and made notes, and we've now finalized it and I'll have it to send in about ten minutes and send it I will.
-
ChasSmith, do you know when the next Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble will be?
Oh yeah, baby, I always know that. :)
Someone grabbed a picture the other day of a sign that was ready to go up, reading July1st -28th.

Hi, all!
Sorry about the errantness & truancy; life has been... busy.
TOD: I haven't followed much of the last decade, so my definition of "contemporary" might be a bit out of date, but Violet was one of my favorite scores from the first listen. It took me a while to warm up to Floyd Collins, but that's probably on my desert island list too. I've probably nitpicked every song of his to death, but I really do love a lot of Jason Robert Brown's work.

This would have been more appropriate yesterday, but here is an article discussing the 5 most notorious performances of the Dance of the Seven Veils in conjunction with Strauss's opera:

-
Just before I sent The Second Letter, I got an e-mail from the president of the college - clearly trying to distance the college itself from what went on (that won't work) and basically saying now that I've been able to respond that everything was on track to wrap things up. I'm sure once it's officially wrapped up I will get a subsequent official letter, but I immediately sent The Second Letter, because it is so damning in so many ways, that they will definitely want to take note, because I'm getting the feeling they are going to offer an official wrap up letter that will not acknowledge any of their wrongdoing - if that's what we get, the next letter will be from the attorney, after which we will decide if it's time to escalate this further.

I saw Maria Ewing do it in L.A. and knew that had to be one of the five. But I just looked at the video they link to, and that's even more explicit than what I remember.

Because of what I was told that it would cost my car? Not at all, because in the past the regular scheduled maintenance has been as much as $1200! AND actually, I only paid $252 this time. They fixed the tie rod and did the alignment, but didn't fix the oil leak. They said that I could just check the oil a little more often, but it's not a bad or a heavy leak and it's not in a place that could cause some real trouble, so it's all good for now. :)

I wonder if she knew what Audra McDonald said about her when she accepted her Tony?
-
I wish I had something more interesting to post about.
-
Richard and I headed out about 4pm and our first stop was to make our final drop-off for the garage sale - my bentwood rocking chair. I decided in high school that I wanted one and finally bought it about 10 years later, in the late '70s. I soon realized that it really wasn't very comfortable, so we bought a new rocker when we were expecting Rob. That one is still in the living room and the bentwood should have a new home by this time tomorrow.

Probably not. I'd rather be in Dublin next week seeing a lot of my friends in THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY.

Given the choice, I'd take Dublin over Cincinnati, too, DR Elmore!

I would too, for a good MAHAGONNY. Damn!

I would too, for a good MAHAGONNY. Damn!
Two of my ROBERTA cast are in it, and David Brophy, who conducted DEAREST ENEMY and EILEEN, is conducting. Claudia Boyle, who's playing Jenny, was my first choice for DEAREST ENEMY but she was committed to Chicago Lyric Opera. I'm sure half of the orchestra is from the Orchestra of Ireland as well.

Good afternoon. I spent the day at the Natural History Museum today.
-
Listening to the dreary Cowardy Custard revue that ArkivMusic has released. Loved this recording on vinyl, but these discs have a really bad sound and I have to send it back because one disc is messed up. Has anybody dealt with them on that before?

This is admirable & always nice to see the other side of a person. On an emotional level I find it difficult at times to understand how trial lawyers can defend someone guilty of such a horrendous crime. Yes, I obviously believe OJ did the crime.
It's a matter of believing in our system of justice for most of us. Everyone is entitled to a zealous defense and everyone has constitutional rights. Too often law enforcement starts with believing they know who did it and builds a case to fit that conclusion rather than investigating the facts and letting them lead to the person who committed the crime. It's a human reaction, not always intentional but it can lead to an innocent person being convicted. The worse the crime the more pressure for an arrest, the more mistakes are made and corners are cut. When it comes to constitutional issues, if you cut corners for someone because the offense is especially bad, it's not a stretch to cut corners for everyone else.
I'm not saying that OJ was innocent, I'm saying that this is a motivating factor behind a lot of what we defense attorneys do. PLUS...when you see people over charged and unreasonable prosecutors insist on ridiculous penalties for things that are just not that big a deal, it's not hard to fight to keep them in check

Wow! A friend of mine just donated that same chair! I didn't know anything about it.

Have to take a sleep study tomorrow night to see if I need a different treatment for my apnea. Looking forward to getting the results and the new treatment, not looking forward to the test.

One more day until vacation
-
We were really busy all week. Funny, I was so worried that things and slowed down too much. Guess again. It's actually ok to leave right now for a week. We have lots and lots to do when we come back. So we'll be rested and ready to go
-
There was an article about that recently in our local paper, Cillaliz. It is frightening to think that cases are built around convicting someone rather than finding the guilty person.
-

I hope it's a relaxing one.

It happens too often. I really think it happens when the officer or officers honestly believe they have the right person - they are just wrong
-
Thanks John G. I think it will be. I rarely take a whole week off. I'm looking forward to doing crazy things like going out for coffee in the middle of the morning

DR Laura, very sad to hear about the priests who were attacked in Phoenix. Have they arrested anyone? Are people in other churches concerned about their safety?

By the way, DR John G., there are four times during the year to get Criterions at half off: the two B&N sales in July and November, and Criterion.com has a flash sale in something like February and September. Those are only for a day or two at a time, if I recall, but they're well worth catching. In my state they don't charge sales tax, and whatever the minimum is, I easily meet it for free shipping.
-
Hello, everyone.
-
Add me to the beyond the valley of the tired. I woke up at 5:30 and couldn't go back to sleep.
-
I bought a new car today. Most exhausting spending all that money! I'd forgotten how many G/D documents one has to sign. I'm usually a patient person, but by the end I was ready to say Oy and Vey and take your documents!
-
I bought an Audi. Used. Even though it's a certified car with a generous warranty, I still had it checked out by my own mechanic. He raved over the car, but he did actually find something wrong. It needs an alignment, so I'll have to take it back to the dealer one day and get that done. It's not a big deal, but they'll take care of it.
-
What fun! A nice new to you car!! Congrats!
-
This car has so many bells and whistles that I'm still learning how to just lock and unlock it.
-
That sounds really great, DR Jeanne. Congratulations!
-
thanks, Cilla. I must say I'm tired of shopping.

Congrats, Jeanne!

I thought I was on the Criterion email list. Guess I'm not. Thanks. I'll check it out.

Great news, Jeanne. You'll have to post a photo.
-
I first looked at it last week, but it hadn't gone through inspection yet and there was no price on it. I assumed it'd be the same price as the others on the lot. No. It was fully loaded and more expensive. I wasn't at all sure the deal would fly, but it did. I got it for the price the others were listed at. I was signing all the G/D papers when a woman who saw it yesterday came in with a cashier's check to buy it. Oops. They have several others; maybe she bought one of them instead. This was a case where I could have paid less if I'd chosen another color, but I wanted white. I was told there were a lot of inquiries about it. It only came onto the website today.

Listening to "Secret Life of Walter Mitty." Never had a recording of this on vinyl as I recall. This disc is in much better condition. And it's fun.
There's even a silly Irma la Douce joke on it.

Is there any way you can fold the laundry while doing the basement walk?

DR Laura, very sad to hear about the priests who were attacked in Phoenix. Have they arrested anyone? Are people in other churches concerned about their safety?
I don't believe they have any idea who did it.
I don't know about other churches. I haven't talked to my minister about it. But I always lock myself in when I'm at the church alone.

Your laundry? Or hers?

Congratulations on the new car, Jeanne.

Yours? Or hers?
Hers. I'm assuming her washer and dryer are in the basement and it just seems, well, more efficient.

Thanks, Laura.

Vixmom, how is the mystery cough? Have any of the docs chased it away?
-
I'm about five seconds from brain dead.
Vibes to all.
And good night.

Yes, of course. But if she could fold all of ours, too, it would be a great help.

That would be a G/D house.

Finished with my viewing.

Goodness! No posts in almost an hour.

I think we are all too old to stay up late. When we start looking for new members for our
gay merry group, we need to look for young people and vampires!
-
And perhaps some members who live in Alaska and Hawaii.

BK, I am glad that the tide is beginning to turn in your direction with this "dirty business." I am glad that you didn't let it just fall by the wayside.

Victory!

Ahhhh, I see George has joined me!

Now I can toddle off to bed.

There was no way we were going to let it fall by the wayside. They certainly had to do SOMETHING, that I understood right away, but the way in which they handled the something is so wrong on so many levels that it's actually shocking. I heard even more this afternoon and I just write it all down and forward it to the attorney. Several people who know the history are really telling me we should probably take this further, but all it is about for me is an apology that is meant and for the other stuff we've asked for to be carried out. Whether their legal folks will allow that is anyone's guess - if they're smart they will, at least that's the way I see it. I think no matter how they'd ever try to spin things we just have volumes of stuff that will show how everything was bungled from day one.

I think I'll take a hot shower right about now, then write the notes.
