Well, you've read the notes, the notes were melancholy, and now it is time for you to post until the melancholy cows come home.

Today will be a day.  Yesterday was Father's Day and today is my mother's birthday!  My sister and I got her a meat grinder attachment for her KitchenAid mixer (it's what she specifically wanted) and we're all going out to dinner at a local restaurant called Falls Terrace (http://www.fallsterrace.com/), which overlooks the Tumwater falls.  I haven't been there in a while, but they always have good food...if a bit pricy...for me. ;)

I have nothing else to report this morning.

Monday morning greetings!  We've closed up the house and turned on the air conditioning because it's supposed to be hot and humid all week  :P

What I thought was going to be an at-home day will now be interrupted by my 2pm appointment with our family doctor to have him remove a wood splinter from my finger.  I got it Saturday during some drawer cleaning and rearranging and cannot get it out myself.  One of our Lima parishioners, who does a lot of woodworking, offered to remove it for me yesterday at church, but I was chicken.

DR Ginny, I almost wish we were getting that hot and humid spell.  I don't often use such language, but it's been way too cool here for this time of year.  We've only achieved low 80s on a few days, and my AC has yet to be turned on.  That having been said, I'm hosing the compressor down real well today (been putting it off) because it looks like I could be using it some tomorrow and Wednesday if we get into the mid-80s.  I came very close to it on a couple of those days recently, so it really is time to enjoy it some.

I guess I'm exaggerating a little bit because June can often be cool here.  I love the four seasons, but I like each of them to be solid, with a summer that's as notable as the damned winter.  If that makes any sense.
Title: Re: MY MELANCHOLY BABY
Post by: Ginny on June 16, 2014, 07:38:44 AM
DR ChasSmith, we often use the air conditioning as much for the humidity as the heat.
Title: Re: MY MELANCHOLY BABY
Post by: ChasSmith on June 16, 2014, 07:44:10 AM
TOD

Snacks, for me, too easily become whole meals.  I've been making a concerted effort to wean myself off of that kind of binge eating lately, because I'd let it get completely out of control over the past year.  The hardest part is not "snacking" as I sit and watch movies, and I'm working on that, too.

But that doesn't answer the question, so...  I guess any number of things, but in particular, good quality tortilla chips with salsa and/or guacamole, good salt-and-pepper potato chips, and peanut butter-filled pretzels.  That more or less covers the chip type of snack, but certain kinds of sandwiches are another downfall.  And again, especially when watching the TV or reading.  (I should do much more reading than I've been doing lately, but the eating while reading thing has been a staple with me for many, many years.  Another pitfall.)

The one time I really saw the bats in Austin was from a boat in the middle of the lake fairly near the bridge under which they spend the day. So, they swooped out over us at dusk. A treasured moment.

So, when you come to Austin, and you should come to Austin, get yourself on a boat.

Given the blood thinners I take, I really wanted some medical supervision.  My doctor did exactly what Mr. W offered to do, but the doctor numbed it first.  Afterwards, when I said something about the blood thinners, he said, "NOW you remind me!"

Anyway, it's gone and I will survive.

We have potential tornado warnings tonight, but I'd love to go a few blocks for a free open rehearsal of one of my favorite local choral groups.

They are trying out their program before they travel to the Ravinia Festival.

I had a date on Sunday with a very nice guy named Gus (short for Augustin). He originates from Mexico, but has lived in the US for about 10 years. He studied medicine in Mexico but instead ended up becoming a welder here.

I told him that I have no interest in romantic entanglements at this time in my life, but he insisted. So I went and I had a good time. He is a nice guy, and I am sure we'll see each other now and then. And, I liked that his name is Gus. You don't meet many people named Gus anymore.

We didn't think about tornadoes when we moved to Michigan & it was a surprise when the school had a tornado drill on the boys first day.  Craig especially was not happy.  Over the years we had a number of warning and high winds.  I only remember a couple of bad ones, the worst being the day all the schools had to keep the children there after hours.

Bats. Ugh. I suppose they're interesting from a distance, but I had an up-close-and-personal encounter that I'd rather not repeat.

Many years ago, the lovely, tree-lined, residential street I lived on was being modified to a main route by the PTB (Powers That Be) in the city. The large trees that shaded the street were removed to make way for street widening. Guess what? Lots of wildlife live in the trees. One night a bat got into the house. I had gone to bed, not knowing I had company. Then I started hearing little noises and sensed that something was in the room. He'd be very quiet for long periods, then SHWOOSH! Arrrgghhgh!! thinking he might be rabid I was afraid to upset him. It was a horrible night!

The next morning i called my friend Mal, my go-to guy for so many things. Mal came over and captured the bat and put him into a shoe box. Mal was very concerned for the bat's health, but seemed quite indifferent to my harrowing night! I called the city wildlife agency and they came and picked up the bat. I have no idea what they did with him. He may have been dead by then.

I was helping Bryan move into an apartment in Ann Arbor, Michigan when a bat flew into the building.  Together we captured it and put it back out.  Bryan said he did that many a time after.  If the doors were left open the bats flew in.

Craig is the one I'm proud of.  In Pennsylvania, just before he turned 4, the older neighbor boy told him the bats would swoop down and bite him.  Even as an adult he did not like bats.  Yet, when one was trapped in his apartment he padded his clothing, put gloves on and captured it before releasing it back outside.

Jane, the salesman who sold me my new car keeps a book of photos of his customers in front of their purchases. It was so hectic last week that I asked to wait. Funny, or sad, is that we never knew the Pennsylvania bat story until we moved here.  The first summer friends and their children visited.  We were all lying down on the deck watching a great meteor shower.  It was summer, and we had bats flying around which the rest of us were ignoring.  Suddenly one came down a bit low but only Craig goes flying up and into the house.   He did come back out to be teased :)

After he rescued the bat I believe he overcame his fear of them.

Well, it isn't officially summer until Saturday morning.

http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/phoenix/2014/06/16/phoenix-priest-murder-arrest-abrk/10573761/

I hope they  have the right guy -  did I read correctly that the young priest was killed  by the older priest's handgun?

Monday morning greetings!  We've closed up the house and turned on the air conditioning because it's supposed to be hot and humid all week  :P

What I thought was going to be an at-home day will now be interrupted by my 2pm appointment with our family doctor to have him remove a wood splinter from my finger.  I got it Saturday during some drawer cleaning and rearranging and cannot get it out myself.  One of our Lima parishioners, who does a lot of woodworking, offered to remove it for me yesterday at church, but I was chicken.

Silly, you should have let him do it.

Glad to know Ginny has been successfully desplintered

We have potential tornado warnings tonight, but I'd love to go a few blocks for a free open rehearsal of one of my favorite local choral groups.

They are trying out their program before they travel to the Ravinia Festival.

The cats and I are in the basement in a tornado warning.  The storm with the double tornados in Nebraska is headed our way

NO TORNADO VIBES for Singdaw and Cilla and JRand

I had a date on Sunday with a very nice guy named Gus (short for Augustin). He originates from Mexico, but has lived in the US for about 10 years. He studied medicine in Mexico but instead ended up becoming a welder here.

I told him that I have no interest in romantic entanglements at this time in my life, but he insisted. So I went and I had a good time. He is a nice guy, and I am sure we'll see each other now and then. And, I liked that his name is Gus. You don't meet many people named Gus anymore.

friendship can be nice too

Has anyone read CLOUD ATLAS?  I just checked it out from the library.  It is a long book but I need something to read while I wait for 3 others to come in.

I didn't realize it was  book  I will have to look for it -- the first time we saw  the movie  we thought it was terrible --- but it seemed to be constantly onthe cable stations and we ended up seeing bits and pieces and then  ended up watching it again from start to finish   and suddenly  we "got" it

I think it takes  multiple viewings to appreciate it

We're ok.  If you've seen the amazing video of the two tornados side by side.  It's real.  That's the storm that was headed our way but it dissipated before it got here.   The storm demolished Pilger, NE.   My home town got hit with winds of 89 MPH heavy rain and hail.  My brother said he's never seen it so bad.

I am so glad I do not live in a tornado prone area --- I  don't know if I woudl ever be able to sleep again

DR JANE I saw the film version of CLOUD ATLAS and it was okay.....so I read the book....and I liked it a LOT!!!

Thanks.  Keith reminded me that we turned the movie off.  I'm glad the book should be better.

Another "interesting", and longer book just came in.  Even though I'm in the mood to read Atlas first I will begin with Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" as I was on the waiting list a long time for it and "Cloud Atlas" doesn't have a queue.

I read American Gods  several years ago -- it was weird ( well it was by Neil Gaiman so that is to be expected)  but I couldn't put it down

(whic really annoyed Vixdad because he had bought it for himself and I kept stealing it everytime he put it down)

Oh good grief!!!  We had about 2 inches of rain in 25 minutes or so.  I had water come in the other night from two different places so today I was trying to fix both of them.  One worked well (at least so far)  the other, not at all, there was a river coming in and it carried the dirt I used to try to build up the area around the house.  So, I know I had the right spot, but ..... anyway, I thought I was about done and guess what....another thunderstorm with heavy rain just started.  I'll stay up and check on it and maybe bale the worst of it, but it's mostly on cement, so I can deal with it when the rain stops.

At least my basement wall didn't collapse like I heard they are doing in a town north of here that has really severe flooding

Well I looked.  And .....  it wasn't any worse than it was when I last looked.  So, the rate of rain falling must have slowed considerably.  Seriously that 2 inches looked like waterfalls coming down and I think it totally overwhelmed my eaves  When it's a normal rain it doesn't come in at all.  Still, it's a problem and I may have to call someone to take a look.

Well no one here to commiserate with and it looks like these thunderstorms are going to keep training for a couple hours, so I may as well go read my book and get some sleep.  REALLY glad I don't have to go to work tomorrow so I can deal with all of this.  AND I can go to coffee in the morning and hear everyone's tales about the storm.  I considered volunteering in Pilger, but it sounds like they don't want anyone but emergency people in town and they won't let you in if you don't live there, so.....I can go get coffee, then clean up the basement, then go to the Air Museum in the afternoon.....or not.

I haven't been there in a while, but they always have good food...if a bit pricy...for me. ;)

Well...it turns out that I had a brain fart.  I showed up at Falls Terrace, looked around and no one from my family was there!  I called my sister who told me that dinner tonight wasn't at Falls Terrace, but at Main Chinese Buffet, close to where my parents live.  I vaguely remember everyone talking about that place yesterday.  I looked at a note to myself where I had written "Falls Terrace," but there wasn't any context, which is that that's where we're going to go next week for my parents' 50th anniversary.  Since today was just my mom's birthday, she wanted to go to Main Chinese Buffet.  I rushed from Falls Terrace to Main Chinese Buffet in about 15 minutes and got there in plenty of time to feast.  It wasn't bad at all, but I wasn't interested in a lot of what they had.  But I certainly filled up my tummy. :)
