We watched Grand Piano a few nights ago, and howled with disbelief at all of the things bk listed in the notes. No one connected with the film has apparently ever attended a classical music concert, because all of those aspects of the film are entirely divorced from reality. Jaw-dropping, really. And the logistics of the plot make no sense at all.

There's bad, and then there's so bad it is funny. And this movie is definitely the latter.

Good morning, all! I have a quiet morning, completely empty, At some point I need to assemble the materials for tomorrow's ROBERTA session and email Judy to verify tomorrow's schedule.

This afternoon, I am hoping the super will finish up the ceiling. He was in yesterday afternoon and applied more plaster, and it's looking good. I'm hoping he can finish today.

You could be watching a Vera Hruba Ralston or Mari Blanchard film, you know!

BK's review of GRAND PIANO reminded me of a scene in SWANEE RIVER, the 1930s Fox film about composer Stephen Foster.

At the end of the movie, after Foster (Don Ameche) has died, Al Jolson INTRODUCES the title tune to a full house.  As I recall, he just sings one verse and chorus, then says "Everybody sing," and the entire audience stands and sings the song perfectly.

Wow! People sure had great memories back then.

BK, I had a similar runaround experience with UPS when I got home from Maine. The theater was responsible for shipping any boxes to us, so all we had to do was package anything we wanted shipped well and label them, and they would be (and were) fully insured.

I had them send me one box, which was packaged perfectly. I had even bought the box and padding from the UPS store in Portland, Maine. When it arrived, one item, a recent purchase, was completely shattered and ruined. The cost of the ruined item was a measly $45.

I called immediately and reported it, and I was told to keep the box for 6 days in case they wanted to send an inspector out. They never did, and never called to let me know anything further. Then, when I pestered them about it again, they gave me a two week runaround because I wasn't the shipper of name, since the theater paid for the mailing.

My company manager did all she could to help on her end when I let her know, but every week for a month I got another runaround. Finally, I was told that maybe I should call the UPS store, which UPS said that they would do weeks earlier. They obviously never did.

I had to browbeat them into them giving me the store's phone number, and when I called, the folks at the store couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. They handled everything in a day, went out of their way to contact me to let me know their progress, and sent off a check immediately. That is what the UPS main office should have done. It seems the UPS main office has a new policy of "let's see if we can drag it out long enough so they forget they are owed anything, and then we won't have to pay." Horrid.

TOD: I've seen some bad movies, but none that I can think of that rivals Grand Piano. Oy.

Phil Collins is going to be in town next week. Apparently he has been a huge collector of Alamo memorabilia and is donating the entire collection to the mission.

My first thought was, if Phil Collins is in town, is he going to see his musical, Tarzan? I know it's not done everywhere, so this might be a great bit for the community theater that's putting it on. Well, nobody at the theater made the connection with one of the authors of their show being in town. Their PR person doesn't know what to do, and now I'm feeding both the PR person and the theater tips on how to possibly get the two together.

Mary was a wonderful woman - worked with her on Hey Love (which I think I had elmore orchestrate a little for the recording) - she was a doll.  I'd heard a few days ago she wasn't doing well and at eighty-four better for her to be at peace - a long and wonderful life.

I got another supervisor on the phone, she acknowledged receipt of the letter faxed and said now they would do another search for the package.  And I went BERSERK.  I told her I was the one guy she did not want to do this with, that I would launch a class action lawsuit and that I had hundreds if not thousands who would go along with it, and that I wasn't getting off the phone until she gave me an exact date the check was being cut and sent.  She heard me loud and clear, apologized on behalf of UPS, and said the new search would only take one day and that the check would definitely be cut on Tuesday and sent - and that she'd just put a rush on it so that I would have it in seventy-two hours after they post it.  I wrote all of that down.

Is it generally known that "ordinary" 60 watt household light bulbs are now halogen? I didn't know that. I know that halogen is known to be superior light and I knew about the law that prohibits some (which, I don't know) incandescent bulbs, but the halogens I was familiar with were primarily track-light bulbs and of a strange size and shape.

She and I were both huge fans of "Bye and Bye" from Dearest Enemy, and when I restored the score in 2002, I wrote the Act Two Intermezzo as a love letter to her. She was always very kind to me.

I'm very sorry to hear this.  When I went to see Dawn Powell's "Walking Down Broadway" at the Mint Theatre in 2005, Mary Rodgers Guettel was in the audience.  She looked so familiar to me, but I couldn't place her.  When I heard her talking during intermission I recognized her voice from TV documentaries about her father.

BK, your story about watching TARANTULA reminds me of going to see MR. SARDONICUS, except I didn't have a brother or even my sister to tell me when it was safe to look.  I had nightmares for months because of that movie and I still have no desire to watch it again.  It was a William Castle film, so I should have known better, but I went to see it by myself.

Why didn't Mr. Cusack just play the notes himself?

I can tell you the main reason things get broken is because when the packages are being sorted through out the building they are moving along on conveyor belts  10 - 15  above the concrete floor .. and if  there is a  jam  boxes can go flying over the edge and if they land on a  corner usually the box will split open

Back tn the day  they used to have a huge  warehouse down  in Peachtree, GA where all the unidentifiable packages  and/or package contents would end up

my proudest moment  from my UPS experience is when I spent two whole days  calling all over the country until I was able to trace the contents  of a package being  sent cross country  that had never arrived

The contents were located in the Peachtree warehouse   t

It contained a wedding dress-  the brides' grandmother's wedding dress that had been worn by her mother and  her sisters before her

his was back before computers or even fax machines   so we had to do this by the bride describing to me in detail the dress, the packaging etc and me repeating the description  over and over until the dress was found

and we got it back to her pressed, cleaned and in time for her wedding

I hope you told her that you didn't want the check sent by UPS.

We had some nasty looking clouds go over today when I was mowing the yard.  It was really hot and humid as I mowed, I got it done and went to the baseball game.  By the time I got to the park, it was about 20 degrees cooler and everyone was in jackets and sweatshirts.   I was in a t shirt and shorts, but lasted until the 8th inning before I got cold and went home.    just glad the lawn is mowed.

For John G.:  Regarding the FB photo.  I have done about 10 different plays that had "murder" in the title.  I think this one was called MURDER BY THE BOOK.

Today, I got to work and went directly into a budget meeting, then had just enough time for lunch before I had to go to another meeting with the people that my supervisor supervises, and then as soon as that meeting got over, I had just a little break before we had our monthly staff meeting, and then as soon as THAT was over, we all went to a retirement get-together for one of the women in the communications department (which actually started at the same time as the monthly staff meeting...WTF?).

The retirement get-together was really nice.  She's very much looking forward to it.  I think she's retiring early because she can.  She's going to take a few weeks and just "be," and then visit her grandkids back east for a couple of months.

After DR SINGDAW first mentioned GRAND PIANO.....I found it online on one of "those" sites and was able to download it to take a look.

It is everything that is written about in the notes....and more!!!

TOD:

The Apple

It has been said that free soundtracks to THE APPLE were given away on opening day in Los Angeles....and that the theatre screen was destroyed when audience members began throwing the LP's at the screen during the movie.....

The Apple is also available on Netflix.  That's where I watched it.  It's definitely on my Topic of the Day list. ;)

Tomorrow's ROBERTA session could be grisly. I'm already getting defensive emails from Judy about "can we cut . . .?"  Please send good vibes! They may be essential.

This is so sad: Richard Rodgers daughter Mary ihas died. I knew she'd been ill with cancer, but this is really upsetting.

She and I were both huge fans of "Bye and Bye" from Dearest Enemy, and when I restored the score in 2002, I wrote the Act Two Intermezzo as a love letter to her. She was always very kind to me.

I'd read this earlier today. :(

That's a great story, Vixmom.

I must now go to bed.  Tomorrow will be another early day, and then after work I have to pick up my friend and her daughter from the airport.

Good night, all!
