Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both Mary and merry, and now it is time for you to post until the merry cows come home.

Good morning, all! I'm up, dressed, and ready for the session. Thank you for the vines last night! I need them today.

I'm also a bit tense because, after yesterday's email exchange, my beloved producer Judy appears to have gone from a "this is fun! " recording to a "let's finish this crap fast!" attitude. If that's the case, it will be a tense day.  If sure that's a part of her own frustrations, by I prefer those sessions where things go my way and very smoothly. This recording could be fantastic,  but it's been a damned difficult one to assemble, and I'm tense.

KEEP THOSE POSITIVE VIBES COMING!

Morning, all!

So sad to hear about Mary Rodgers. I never did put my copy of "Hey, Love" on ye olde iPod, but I'll be sure to do so now. I sat near her once, at a very mediocre production of "Boys From Syracuse" (she was acknowledged at the end of the show). "Mattress" has so many great lyrics (the whole "Alas/a lass/I lack/alack" bit is pure joy).

Ben: Enjoy seeing Ruby! I remember him very fondly from my Eighty-Eights days, and I'm so thrilled to hear that he's still around. His version of "Let Them Hear You" from Ragtime is still my definitive one.

TOD:
On ye olde iPod: lectures, lectures, more lectures
blip.tv playlist: "Brows Held High" - sardonic reviews of various arthouse films that I'll never see

We watched HOTEL BERLIN on TCM last night.  I'd never seen it before, and it's quite good; written by Vicki Baum, who wrote GRAND HOTEL.  The story is set at the end of WW2.

I assume the film is not that well known because it has a "B," albeit talented, cast.  There are no major names, just good actors like Raymond Massey, Peter Lorre, Andrea King, etc.  Lorre was superb in a very un-Lorre type of role.

In looking at things about Mary Rodgers on the Internet, I somehow found myself reading yet another debate about the merits of son Adam's score for A Light in the Piazza.

I adore the score and found the original production incredibly moving, but what strikes me is the disparate array of reactions to the score: from pure adulation to pure loathing.

DR TCB:  Saying "a young Sondheim" and "a young Cariou" would necessitate saying "an alive Gingold".  That wouldn't do, so the writer made it Sondheim-centric and only alluded to the fact that you can see a smooth Sondheim face in those photos.

Friday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I left for the Y about 11am and were ready for lunch when we left there a couple hours later.  Because I wanted to visit a flooring place south of here, we decided to check out the dining options at Miami Valley Gaming (http://www.miamivalleygaming.com), the new racino between here and my Mom's.  It's so NOT our kind of place, but an appropriate place to go on the day that tens of thousands of librarians are gathering in Las Vegas for the American Library Association Annual Conference.  We looked at the dining places, but thought the prices were too high and ended up at Gold Star Chili across the street.  After lunch we picked out new flooring for the upstairs bathroom and set up a tentative install date of next Wednesday.

DR John G, when you read WHITHER (which I didn't think was so bad), pay attention to the description of Rowena, the Lyceum performer, between pages 112 and 121.  I laughed out loud when reading that and imagining what Dawn would think of a Chautauqua enactment of herself!

Good afternoon or evening.  I've spent the day taking care of several annoying chores that just had to finally be crossed off the list.  Tonight, one of the last things I feel like doing is sitting at a local outdoor venue watching some people put on ANYTHING GOES.  And yet, that's just what I'm doing.  Got to see a few folks.

Tomorrow night, I'll be watching (at least it's indoors) another group of people doing BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, of which I know nothing.  I've been told I'll enjoy it, or at least not hate it.  We'll see.  Oh yes, we shall see.

(Almost typed SUNDAY BLOODY SUNDAY there.)

2 of Dawn Powell's early books are available for download as free e-books at the Internet Archive. Scroll to the bottom and you'll see the files. You can download them as e-pub or Kindle files.

I didn't know Powell at all until Ginny talked about her. Because she's an early century writer I looked to see if any of her stuff was at Gutenberg or Many Books. No luck there but the Internet Archive, a great resource has those 2 books. Open Library, another Internet lending library, has 17 of her books in some form

Dawn Powell Open Library (https://openlibrary.org/search?q=dawn+powell&author_key=OL6274279A&has_fulltext=true)

I've got all her novels that were reissued, the volume of collected plays, the Tim Page bio and the volume of collected letters. I kinda went Powell crazy in the 1990s. Still love her stuff.

Thank you to DR Ben for the links to eBook versions of Dawn Powell's work.  Ask Anthony if he remembers helping me pick out DP books at the Strand Bookstore and then chatting about my project on a park bench in Union Square.

DR John G, when you read WHITHER (which I didn't think was so bad), pay attention to the description of Rowena, the Lyceum performer, between pages 112 and 121.  I laughed out loud when reading that and imagining what Dawn would think of a Chautauqua enactment of herself!

I think she had a good sense of humor about everything but herself.

:)

Remember the quote from Mel Brooks, though:  "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer...”

Thanks! It's a huge relief. This whole recording has been an ordeal. I'm very happy with it, but it has not been an easy recording with too many pieces to assemble: stage band, orchestra, dialogues and vocals from Dublin and Manhattan; too many pieces of the puzzle to risk dropping one.  After this epic, anther like EILEEN or DEAREST ENEMY will be a breeze!

Just before I left, talked to the attorney - he'd given them until today to respond and, smartly, they did.  Not what we wanted, of course, just a response saying that within a week's time everything would be wrapped up and that all further correspondence needed to be sent to the District's legal counsel.  The attorney replied that yes, that's what it needed to be, and that any response to me within the week's time had to go to him.  It's his opinion that they understand what's at stake here, but who knows.  He's going to call them on Tuesday, although we'll discuss whether we should give them the week they've mentioned.  Either way, however this is going to play out it will play out shortly.  He doesn't think that initially they will give me what I'm asking for, but he does think eventually I'll get it.

I did love that man!

Is that Molly Brown?  Who is the man?

I know I should know this.

I bought on EBAY a lobby card from ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE and the seller turned out to be DR MBARNUM!

Was it signed by all the males in the cast?

The man would be Harve Presnell, right?

Who by the way is the baritone on the old Eugene Ormandy recording of CARMINA BURANA that many of us grew up with.  I still have a great fondness for it.

Great Performances is broadcasting the Met's La Boheme tonight. So heartbreaking, that score just grabs me by the throat and throttles me. So many great melodies and shattering moments.

Yes, but do you think it is as good as RENT?
