Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cafeteria-style, and now it is time for you to post until the cafeteria cows come home.

Today is Pride Day in New York City. We are half a block from where they walk so we will hear the revelers. Anthony's cousin may walk in the parade. If she does, she will call us when she's near and we will walk over and wait to see her, otherwise we probably won't watch it. I've been in many, many marches and don't feel the need to participate anymore. There are many others willing to take my place. Also, it's supposed to be 85 and humid. Ugh.

BK,

I haven't watched either COPLAND or THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT (assume you are talking about the original with Michael Pare and Nancy Allen) for many years, but I recall liking both of them very much.

THE PHILADELPHIA EXPERIMENT has a very clever premise (supposedly inspired by "fact").

Thanks everyone....and yes DR BEN - I retired from State Employment at the Indiana Dept. of Labor in April of 2004.  I started working at the bookstore in October of 2005, so I have been there almost nine years.....my sister has owned it for almost the entire time.

My retirement is actually happening in July because in September, my sister is probably closing the store.  The payroll and sales taxes and other government and non-government expenses have all made it difficult for her to come out even at the end of any given month.  She lost her husband about a year and half ago, and she has started school to study psychology, so she has enough to do.

Books are a tough sell right now....and although we do a gangbusters business in services....it just can't pay the bills.

Good morning, all! I have a bit of housecleaning today. Now tht the celing is repaired, I can begin my treks to Toyland on Tuesday, so today and tomorrow, following physical therapy, i plan to get my apartment in some semblance of order.

I completely missed the fact that June 16 was my 35th anniversary of moving to Manhattan. Iy was a Saturday in 1979. I was 32 years old and ready to conquer. Today I feel older than God and unprepared to conquer anything.

You've accomplished so much artistically and made such a difference.  I hope you never measure your achievements by finances as some people do.  If doing things "your way" has meant a little less money, so be it.  What a body of work already done and quite a lot yet to come.

Herewith, as promised, my TOD post of yesterday:

Columbus:
Mills Cafeteria, downtown.
The Kahiki, discovered by me just before it was closed and razed.    http://goo.gl/QrTycp
A couple of modern mid-century drive-in/eat-in hamburger joints on the east side which must go unnamed pending research.

South Florida:
Yes, DR Mike, Wolfie's for sure, and the one on Collins Ave. in Miami Beach must have been to die for in its glory days.
The Forum restaurant at Las Olas and A1A.
The Royal Castle burger chain which, for my tastes, improved upon White Castle.

Cleveland:
The Brown Derby (not related to the California ones).
The wonderful old, REAL Chinese restaurant in Cleveland Heights whose name I must track down.
An old downtown cafeteria I was taken to once and have never forgotten.  Must research it.

Los Angeles:
Hamburger Hamlet (esp. Hollywood, Sunset, Westwood.).
Ship's Galley coffee shops (esp. Westwood and La Cienega/Olympic).
Diamond Jim's (esp. Hollywood Blvd.)
Dolores Restaurant (esp. Wilshire, west of La Cienega).
TOO MANY to name.  TOO DAMNED MANY.  Must arbitrarily stop here.

New York:
Reuben's on E. 59th (?) St.
La Fondue on E. 52nd St.

'Tis but a sampling of the places that reside in the top tiers of memory.  No explanation or justification offered for any of them.  They are places that should properly have remained a part of one's life forever.

I brought my Kindle with me yesterday and will again today.  I actually was able to finish the last two chapters of the Dresden Files book that was reading, so that's done with.  Afterward, I went out to dinner and started "Splinter of the Mind's Eye," by Alan Dean Foster.  It was the first Star Wars-inspired novel, written about a year after Star Wars, before ANY other movie was filmed or even written.  If I remember correctly, Luke and Leia are romantically involved!  I remember that I bought this when it first came out, when I was in sixth grade!  I don't remember anything else about it.  We'll see how it all turns out.

And now, I must be off.  Have a good day, all!

Interesting.  At the end of the first movie it felt like that would be the direction the story would take.  I think the chemistry between Han & Leia was more fun.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from Lima, a little later than usual because we paid a call on Mrs. L.  She's having open heart surgery on Wednesday and vibes and prayers would be appreciated.  While we were eating lunch at Panera, Rob called to tell us that he and Mary Linda would be here when we got home.  They're upstairs assembling the IKEA medicine cabinet and vanity/sink that we bought last week.  It can't be installed until the floor goes in, but at least it'll be ready.

DR Elmore, I remember June 16, 1979, very well.  Many of our theatre friends gathered in the driveway of the home of your airport chauffeur and when he opened the garage door we sang, "What Will We Do Without You-oo?" and waved you off.  Then we gathered for brunch at Nancy's.  Little did I know that 9 years later I'd have been married to Richard for 7 years and we'd be moving into Nancy's house with toddler Rob!

MAJOR VIBES FOR MRS. L!!!!

At first I read that as if they were going to install it before the floor, glad to see they are only assembling it.  Craig doesn't want to buy anything else from IKEA because he takes after his parent's and doesn't enjoy assembling.  We recently purchased a desk chair for me at Office Max, right off the floor already assembled-couldn't resist that even if they still charged us the assembly fee of $10.

I would love some help from BK or anyone who can contribute.  I'm trying to identify the record store scene in Westwood in the 1970s.

1.  Vogue Records was on the west side of Westwood Blvd., near Bel Air Camera & Hi-Fi or whatever their name was then.

2.  I'm recalling one across the street near the north end of the block, and it had an upstairs.  What was it?

3.  At one point, Record Surplus (?) had a space in the block north of the Village Theater.  If I'm right about it being them, that would be prior to their moving to Pico Blvd.  (I just found out they've now moved to Santa Monica Blvd.)

4.  Seems like there was a store later, in the mid-1980s, near the little old domed bank building (which I'm thinking was a B of A then).  Anyone know what that was?  I was living in Redondo Beach then, and not frequenting Westwood like I used to.

My friend Don Carrier was in 54 as Julian who was supposed to be Halston. His part ended up being a cameo. His scenes must have been in the material that was cut. One of the scenes was a hot tub scene with Ryan Phillippe.

We saw

Prunella Scales (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prunella_Scales)

last night when we watched

Hobson's Choice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobson%27s_Choice_%281954_film%29)

She plays one of the sisters.

HC is based on the play of the same name by Harold Brighouse.

The Broadway musical

Walking Happy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walking_Happy)

is based on Hobson's Choice. The song, Walking Happy, by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen, came from the show. One of the stars was

Norman Wisdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Wisdom)

in the

John Mills (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mills)

role (Will Mossop)

And that is your history lesson for today.

WALKING HAPPY, the musical, tried out in Detroit before opening on Broadway.  I saw it with my high school drama club for $2.25.

Not to take anything away from Larry's anniversary but my 34th year in New York will be in August. I arrived on August 28, 1980 (it was a Thursday) and the next day we went to see 42nd Street at the Winter Garden Theatre. It had just opened that previous Monday (August 25th) with the revelation, by David Merrick, that Gower Champion had died that afternoon. They kept the news from Wanda Richert, his girlfriend, until that moment.

34 years later (in August), like Carlotta Campion, I'm still here.

And I'm back in the office tomorrow for more overtime. At least I'm making money off this and I think, besides paying for the dental work, I'm going to buy two new computers, a laptop and a desktop.

I'm also going to use a gift card (I got it in 2011 for 20 years of employment at the Foundation Center), I think, to buy a tablet which we will use on our trip to the family reunion to Michigan in August instead of taking the laptop.

These are not.

Today  I went to see a friend  who had the lead in the play  Quartermaine's Terms.  It was put on  by the Bare Bones theatre group in a  space on Main Street in Northport,  just a couple of blocks from the  harbor, so before the play I took a stroll through the park at the harbor

I'm beginning to wonder if I'm confusing two different goings-away from Middletown...

DR Elmore, do YOU remember the scene in the Martins' driveway?  Or did we do that when Jim left to do CAMELOT?

Didn't Nancy have some sort of farewell for you here at the house?

Aaaaack, I'm getting old!

I was in NYC when Jim left to do CAMELOT. I have next to no memories of my last month in Ohio.

I visited friends in New York in 1979 and saw Sweeney as well. No other production can top the original cast for me. Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury were heaven.

It was a different time because I went to the stage door and the very polite doorman just said to go on up and I met and chatted with both Cariou and Lansbury, getting both of their autographs. I told Cariou how much I enjoyed his work at the Guthrie and Miss Lansbury was very sweet to a star-struck 26 year old goofball from Coon Rapids, MN. We chatted about Sondheim and the show and I left on a cloud.

I don't recall another record store near Vogue in the 1970s, but then I practically lived at Vogue.  The only other chains at that time would have been Discount Record Center, I think.  I believe the store near the BofA was a Wherehouse or something like it.  I only have a vague memory of some store being north of the Village, but not sure if I ever went there.

Vogue was incredible.  Record magic.  Probably bought a number things there, but I've always specifically remembered a few soundtrack finds.

DiscConnection was a great store - run by a nice man named Bernie and his then-wife.  After he had to sell that store, he moved around to several places, the last of which was by the DGA in a strip mall where the Argentinian restaurant was - can't remember the name now - think all of the branches have closed, replaced by the not as good LaLas.  I hung out at DiscConnection all during the run of The First Nudie Musical in Westwood, across the street from the store.

Here's a great dance from Walking Happy. The credits here says Danny Daniels did the choreography, but the new Fosse bio says Fosse did it when he was called in to doctor the show. Either way, the dance's wonderful.

The AZ Diamondbacks bought the contract of one of my favorite Xs.  It's great news for him, but I'll miss watching him play

Ex as in an ex gentleman caller?

Thank you, Laura.  That was my question.

I'm the IKEA assembler for my ENTIRE family...and a few weeks ago, I even helped our condo property manager put together a couple of picnic tables for the outside of our club house.  Those weren't from IKEA, but they did need some assembling.

I don't know, elmore, just reading this page wears me out!

Wow!  I'd never really thought about how extensive your resumé was or could be!
