A few days ago, DR MBarnum offered a link to a site designed to assist with selecting your Netflix queue. Here is a new start-up offering the same thing. It is also free (as was DR MBarnum's, if I recall correctly):

thanks Sing Song I must have missed it when Mike posted the link

A very happy birthday to the vixmom of vixmom!

Happy Friday to all y'all!!!

Feels like a Saturday here. I'm leaving in a couple of hours for an overnight trip to the Colonial Theater in beautiful downtown Phoenixville, PA -- where I will once again attend the annual BLOBFEST runout which is this evening. This has become a fun summer diversion that's easy to get to and easy to get back from.
Friends and I will enjoy the street fair and festivities tomorrow morning and a double feature of THE BLOB and MOTHRA tomorrow afternoon, both in 35mm. The theater is very alive and well and has added digital projection since last summer, but the key word here is "added" -- they didn't "convert". They're keeping the 35mm projectors and running vintage films in 35mm whenever they can, bless their little pea picking hearts.
It was very tempting to plan on driving another half hour and enjoying a great Amish meal in Lancaster County, but that will be done on a separate visit with proper time allotted.
Anyhoo, I shall be E&T through the day, but will pop in this evening.
-
TOD:
The other night I watched Kurosawa's SEVEN SAMURAI (on Criterion Blu-ray) for the first time in years. For as often as I attended revival houses over the years, I've been a relative latecomer to feeling comfortable with Japanese cinema, and now I'm very much enjoying it. This one's three and a half hours almost seemed to fly by.
I'll be watching A HARD DAY'S NIGHT when I'm back from this little weekend sojourn. I might also pick up the Blu-ray of HELP, with which I had even more of an affinity back in the day. I never had these on home video before, and haven't seen either of them, except for clips, since the 1960s. Really looking forward to it.
-
Friday morning greetings! Our electricians have returned!
-
Forgot one:
Last night I went to a theater and saw CHEF which is hardly a great film but was certainly a pleasant enough diversion. The food parts are to die for, and it's a damned good thing I made a point of eating a decent meal beforehand. If I'd been hungry in the theater I probably would have bloated myself on popcorn (at least this place has real buttered popcorn), or would have been distractedly ravenous throughout the movie and then not found anything remotely as satisfying as would have been appropriate afterward.
-
This evening is the rehearsal for tomorrow's wedding of our DN/goddaughter Lauren and her ever lovin' Jimmy. There will be a dinner afterwards at the Houston Inn.
-
Good morning, all.
Happy birthday, VixNana!
And vibes to all in need.
-
ChasSmith, I love Seven Samurai and agree that the time just seems to fly by.
I hope to get to Chef on Sunday. I may sneak a Cuban in. Or some barbecue.

And The Song Of The Day Is: I AM EASILY ASSIMILATED
Alternatively, "I Understand" (got "On The Town" on the brain, after Bruce's review - seriously, folks, how hard is it to put on a good production of this show? You've got one of the all-time brilliant scores, a great old-fashioned moving story with a defined setting - just play it straight and let the laughs & tears flow... yeesh)
Morning, all!
TOD:
On ye olde iPod: Natalie Douglas's "To Nina: Live at Birdland"

Break-a-leg vibes for George and Company tonight.
-
Great news from DR VIXMOM and DR MIKE yesterday....so let's continue the trend!
Happy birthday to VIXNANA - have a great dinner.
-
Opening night vibes for DR GEORGE.
Thanks to all for the vibes for STEEL MAGNOLIAS....we had a fine audience and the ladies did a nice job. Of course while watching last night, I realized that the sound effects should have been for a hand gun instead of a rifle......but sometimes those things happen. If we were still using the old system, I would just redo the disk....but since it's on the computer now and all the cues are "complicated", it will just stay as it is..... The dogs and the music are nice, however for some reason they sound very muffled.
-
Happiest of birthdays to VixNana!
-
The choreographer for the ON THE TOWN revival did the opening number for Wednesday's SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE. It says the recording is the 2014 Broadway Cast.....it wasn't bad....these are the contestants from the show....although the season winner will have a part in the show on Broadway.

Just reminds me how much fun dancing can be to watch!

DR CHAS SMITH - Beware the Blob!
-
Good morning, all! I slept late, ran to therapy, and i am home. I've got to take apart an area of my apartment, sort things, clean, and then re-assemble.
I've been waiting for an answer from the Kern attorney this morning, but no word yet. I hope we have an answer by this afternoon or Monday.
Last night i watched 2/3 of the BBC mystery Death Comes To Pemberley, based on the P.D. James sequel to Pride and Prejudice. I read the novel last September and enjoyed it, although it has none of Jane Austen's voice or tone. The BBC version, which also has none of Austen's characters speaking like characters from 1812, has added more characters from the original novel who did not appear in the P.D. James book, and inserted some poorly executed flashbacks from the original novel that are not nearly so well done as the scenes in the last two BBC versions of P&P.
I'll watch part 3 tonight.
-
We'll start taking pre-orders as soon as the CD is in mastering.
-
I've been up since six-thirty. Stayed in bed till nine, then got up and did an edit road map on an upcoming project.
-
Ron, I'm glad you are so easily assimilated.
-
Good news: the last if the electrical work is in process.
Bad news: it's taking place in the downstairs bathroom and Richard and I need to leave here in about 3 hours for the rehearsal and dinner. And we need showers before we leave...
Color me tense.
-
Should I be concerned that I just heard one electrician say to the other, "Wire? What wire?"

Be afraid, Ginny.

Ron, I'm glad you are so easily assimilated.
I'm not too easily assimilated, but I can be assimiliated. Keep those danged Borg away from me.

Last night I went to a theater and saw CHEF which is hardly a great film but was certainly a pleasant enough diversion.
I agree, a pleasant diversion, and the second science-fiction movie out this year starring Sofía Vergara. (I consider any movie where the world's hottest living woman is romantically linked to John Turturro and Jon Favreau to qualify as science fiction—especially if the plot calls for her to pay Turturro to have sex with her. Ah, Hollywood!)
-
BK, I think you may be pleasantly surprised by ALWAYS, PATSY CLINE. I saw it here two years ago, and although I am not a country western fan, I loved this show. My dear Friend, Sharry O'Hare played the role of Louise, the role that Sally Struthers will be playing in the production you are seeing. It is basically a true story. It is warm and touching, and hysterical.
-
Happy Friday, All!
Quite the night you had, BK.
I'm surprised you could tell the difference between Megan Hilty and Dee Dee. They're so much alike! :D
Seriously, talk about a switch-a-roo and it sounds very last minute. Poor Dee Dee, scrambling to fill in the blanks with no apparent time to do so.
Nice that you can still bowl at the Bowl. :D

Yes, the power was out briefly and, as soon as Richard returned from picking up his tux, I disappeared upstairs to take a shower. We are back on line now and I think the electricians are about to leave.

Yes, DR Jane, it was a bit of both. I got to christen Rob and Mary Linda's somewhat refurbished bathroom and discovered a couple more things that need attention. The shower faucets are a little stiff from disuse and the shower head seems a little clogged.

Something good came out of this ;)

DR George didn't thank me for my opening night vibes.

Whew! The electricians left about 20 minutes ago and Richard and I are both ready for the evening with about 20 minutes to spare.
Off to get our marching orders from Bride Lauren - bye for now!

Bernstein didn't write a song for me: "I Am Easily Discombobulated."

Hope you both have a great time, DR Ginny!

Wedding attendance vibes for fun for DR GINNY & DH RICHARD.

I saw Sally Struthers as Miss Hannigan in ANNIE and as Miss Lynch in GREASE. She was hilarious in both shows. The audiences loved her.
She opened GREASE - which begins with a reunion which sort of explained why all the high
school students were [at least] in their thirties.
People were still coming into the theatre and she stopped the show and asked their names...."Oh yes, I remember you, you were always late to class, too"....and she took her ample frame out into the audience moving between rows and "remembering" anecdotes about people whose feet she was stepping on....she walked behind us brushing up against us and apologizing....for the narrow aisles...
-
Of course my favorite put-down of latecomers was done by DAME EDNA.....she also stopped what she was doing and asked the group where they were from.....they told her....and then she said:
"Well.....I came all the way from Australia, and I got here on time...."

I saw Dame Edna in San Francisco several years back. She was assessing the "look" of the audience and said, "I'm really shocked at how you've all dressed for the theater. I feel like you're not quite out of bed yet." She then put her hand over her eyes and looked up to the Loge and Balcony and said, "If you're dressed like this in the expensive seats who knows what 'they' must be wearing up there."
"One imagines trash bags."

Minnesota is apparently going to have a summertime polar vortex early next week. Overnights will be in the 40s; daytime highs will be around 60. Who knew? :P

We had a wee bit of rain that cooled us down some but now that much, thank goodness.

And on that note (B-natural), it's time to go to the theater!
Until later!
-
She opened GREASE - which begins with a reunion which sort of explained why all the high
school students were [at least] in their thirties.
I recently learned that many stage productions of GREASE now contain the extra songs that were written expressly for the movie (such as the Robin Gibb-penned title song, as well as John Farrar's "Hopelessly Devoted to You"). The only version of GREASE I ever saw, which was performed here in L.A. at what used to be called the Wilshire Theatre near my house, was a faithful rendering of the original concept musical. Do you folks have an opinion about this? I can appreciate both sides, but I'd rather see the original musical; if I wanted to see the movie, I'd watch the movie. Would audiences revolt if they didn't hear what is basically a Bee Gees song in "Grease"?
-
That does seem to be the trend these days, DR BrettySphaghetti. I, like you, prefer my stage musicals sans movie permutations. They are different media, after all.
-
Hmm...
We need us a frenzy or six.

Just to be clear. I did like The Silkworm, I just thought it was a little on the long side. I liked The Cuckoo's Calling better. I probably said it, but I love the characters of Robin and Cormoran Strike although I think I imagine Strike to be older than he is. You learn more about them in this one which was fun. Can't wait to read the next one

This noon, Edith and Vitalino took me out for lunch. Vitalino brought both Edith and I bouquets of flowers, he brought me a gift and a birthday cake. He amazes me. He just graduated from high school and he's so considerate year after year.

Back from Always, Patsy Cline. More in the notes.

Tonight was the opening night for Olympia Little Theatre's production of "The Tempest." It was practically sold out! They had to hold the house for a few minutes because a BUS with 30 people from out of town was running late! We only had to hold for about five minutes, so it wasn't bad. Otherwise, it was a great performance! Thanks for all the vibes and good wishes!!
