TOD:  "Nobody" sung here by Sylvia, as always

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mmTURNQSYY

Loretta Lynn looks oddly (and uncharacteristically) unhappy in the audience at the end of the video, at around 3:03.  I can't tell if it has to do with the performance or something else.  i assume it's something else.

I love the funny wordplay in Achy Breaky Heart, sung by Billy Ray Cyrus

And from her pre-twerking era, Miley Cyrus from a sort-of country phase (the words feel more country than the arrangement), Party in the USA

Loretta Lynn & Crystal Gayle (they are sisters)

Dolly Parton

But mostly and always:

MISS PATSY CLINE

Here she is near the end of life singing her signature song live on tv....with a little more yowling and growling than on the record...and her hair in bangs to hide the scars from her car accident.

TOD:

I have grown to enjoy more country music since I live in Texas and a friend in Austin, who is a music writer, has taken me to many places to hear everybody from Kinky Friedman to Billy Joe Shaver.

That said, my favorites will always be Patsy Cline and her "Crazy" writer, Willie Nelson. I play Willie's latest album of standards quite a lot.

And I love k.d. lang's country, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Lyle Lovett.

Good morning, all! I'm on my second cup of coffee and I've been to and from the market. A friend is coming by at 1:00 to hear ROBERTA and I needed to get some refreshment into the apartment.

I'll spend a part of the morning with a bit of tidying up and thinking about tomorrow's project while the laundry is going: discarding no-longer-needed items. I'd like to clear out 3-4 drawers of files and pull a few books. I'll need the rom fr the returning Toyland CDs and books.

I grew up on country music, thanks to my dad and his Appalachian home. There was a wonderful 3-part documentary about country music that's never been released to my knowledge on DVD. It's title was Lonesome Road, Lost Highway, something like that. My dad always wanted to get to the Grand Ole Opry, but to my knowledge, he never did.

I like Hank Williams, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, probably more, since I've listened to a lot for Christmas Up The Holler. And I love the soundtrack for Nashville, one of my favorite films.

Last night I watched the last third of Death Comes To Pemberley, which I enjoyed, all quibbles aside. The last third packs a wallop: an execution, a short Darcy-Elizabeth sex scene, and a visit from Lady Catherine de Burgh, who does not appear in the P.D. James novel. I liked the cast for the most part, although I think that the actress playing Elizabeth Bennett Darcy is not pretty enough after Elizabeth Garvey and Jennifer Ehle in the two BBC adaptations of Pride and Prejudice.

I'll be curious to see how it goes over on Masterpiece Theatre in the fall.

My favorites are Mary Chapin Carpenter and Martina McBride.

DR Cillaliz - have you ever created a cat food cake for one of your critters?

No.  They are pretty picky about what they eat.  I don't think they would like it.   I don't really know their birthdays so we celebrate Callie in June, Boo in July and Ricky in October. That's about as close as I know.  I generally get them a new piece of cat furniture. Either a replacement for one that is trashed from being used as a scratching post (an appropriate use for cat furniture) or a new one.

Last week I visited the auto repair shop on the off chance that some clever person could find a cheap and easy fix to the Volvo's side mirror. The fellow who was there tried, but couldn't. He thinks it'll require replacing at least one part. The parts I saw on the Internet were $500-600, plus there would be labor required as well. Methinks it's time for some duct tape. Or chewing gum.

And I still think it was vandalism.

She claims she  told me she hung it on my chair  but I never heard her  of course the hearing test does show how much hearing loss  I have especially in the upper ranges  so....

Really looking forward to seeing Derek and Julianne Hough tonight.  I offered to go get mom and bring her to Sioux City to go to the show, but she didn't want to.  I'm sorry she won't see it, but I'm glad I don't have to spend the whole day in the car.

I can't wait to here how you like it.  These are my two favorite DWTS pros ever.

Went to help an acquaintance clean out an old restaurant that he is converting into a new place. He has a great deal of stuff to be done and he's relying on Kickstarter for the financing, which worked out. He's also relying on friends to help with the place. Well, today that didn't work out so well because I was the only one to show up. I don't know how much I helped, but I enjoyed all but the roof work, which was done on the first day of the year here to pass 100 degrees.

My cat's a hand-me-down from a former housemate (and current co-worker), so he estimated that she (Ebonie) was born sometime in June or July in 2002, so she's just about 12 now.

I have some metal epoxy that can hold up to 3500 psi.  You could look for something like that, if the broken part doesn't need to move...much more solid than duct tape or chewing gum.

;)

Topic of the Day:  probably Shania Twain.  My niece is a HUGE fan of hers and for quite a while, anytime that I had to drive my niece somewhere (before she finally got her own driver's license), we had to listen to Shania Twain, so I've sort of developed an appreciation for her.  She's certainly a very good singer and I think she's either written or co-written just about everything that she's recorded.

Well, I must be going.  I slept way too late (but I certainly needed it).  I was actually planning on going to work today to make up some time, but that didn't happen. ::) Anyway, I have to run an errand for my sister, then feed her cats and her boyfriend's cat and then go to the theater.

There's a cast party at someone's house tonight after the show, but I don't really know too many people in the cast (and not the hostess at all), so I probably won't go.  But, we'll see.

Have a good rest of the day, all!

Sounds like it was a wonderful Opening Night at the El Portal indeed! I wish my Friday theater-going experience was one sixteenth as good as yours last night.  It was not even close.

It was not an opening, but I was courted to see this new musical due to a friend in it. Two of us gritted our teeth through it. It was only 2 hours and 45 minutes long...zzzz. Every number was too long, tons of writing 101 mistakes all over the place and no direction (lots of bad acting class self-staging throughout). Other than that it was fine haha. But someone threw a ton of money at it and is still doing so. Lordy, can we have some of that for better projects, please??

Tonight I will be going to see the opening of that show that has the 23 yr old Applegate. Why, I ask myself? Because I have other friends in it who will be wonderful, like the lovely Cynthia Ferrer. Hopefully I will escape without strangling anyone.  :D

I long for one of those opening nights like you had last night.   :)

Feeling very blah today and the only thing that I wanted to do was watch some random stuff on Amazon.com or Netflix...and for some reason I cannot get either to work on the new tv today. So I instead watched a rather boring Bollywood 'thriller' from 1991. It caused me to take a couple of naps.  8)

Back from a very long recording session.  Day began weirdly when I got in the motor car and saw the glove box open and the thing next to my seat open.  Yes, someone broke in my car.  They were very neat about everything - all they got was my four year old iPod (I have another in the house, so it's fine) and the quarters that I keep for meters - about eight bucks worth.  For that, I hope that creeps who did it suffer and immediate and painful death.  I'm not quite sure HOW they got in the car, either, as there was no forced entry.  I locked it when I got home last night, so either they found a way to get in via the keyless lock or maybe something's wrong with the car and it unlocked it itself, which is doubtful.  Even if I hadn't locked it, the car is supposed to automatically lock after one minute.  I'll have that checked, of course.  I really don't leave the car out overnight that much, and now I shan't ever leave it out again.

The session was very long but we got great stuff from my excellent three musicians.  The difference between them and the original people is like night and day - these pros just read it down, did the takes and that was that.  They were there for four hours and we got everything on our list plus several more.  After, the folks paying for the recording asked me how much more it would cost to have them redo everything else.  I don't think we really need to do that, as some of it was fine to begin with, but I will listen to the final mixes very carefully and maybe we'll do another two-hour session.  I know there are a couple more tracks we could probably help.  But we got quite a bit - the problem is they're so much better that it might make the rest now sound not good enough.  We shall see.

We also fixed one vocal, replaced synth strings with a much better string sound, fixed the musical director's vocals and then did his piano fixes, two of which he just couldn't quite get - the licks in this score our outrageously difficult.  I think we finally got something we can live with - the problem is he kept getting in his head about them and that just made everything worse.

All I can say about the Derek and Julianne Hough show MOVE LIVE ON TOUR is WOW!  It was high energy, lots of dancing, some singing, audience participation and just an incredibly upbeat wonderful show.  I can't say enough good things about it had a blast!  I got some good photos, I posted a few on FB. They let you use your camera without flash.  Also got high fived by Derek both times he went up the aisle.

Here's the Sioux City Journal review "Hough's Wow Sioux City Audience"

SIOUX CITY | Even if you have never seen Derek and Julianne Hough on ABC’s reality show, “Dancing with the Stars,” and aren’t a big fan of dance in general, their Move on Live Tour performance Saturday at the Orpheum Theatre had everything an Ed Sullivan show could have provided, ratcheted up about three notches.

Right out of the chute, the brother-and-sister pair with 10 support dancers brought on their high-impact, aerobic workout to a medley of tunes, with a bass sound that vibrated the walls, floor and seats.

“Sioux City, you guys are awesome!” Julianne shouted at the end of the song.

“We feed off of your energy,” Derek pointed out. “So the more energy you have, the harder we will dance for you.”

The presentation showcased the legendary footwork of Derek, 29, and Julianne, who will turn 26 on July 20, which resulted in seven mirror ball trophies for the pair.

Ballroom purists may have been hoping for some “slow, slow, quick, quick” foxtrot steps or “cotton eye Joe” country moves. But the incorporation of a variety of dance styles, special effects, fabulous video projections and spectacular lighting was outstanding on a simple set that had a nine-step staircase and several large black cubes for different levels of dancing.

Derek was particularly strong in a shirtless number as were his backup male dancers with their own six-pack abs. Their moves were so precise and provocative, it was hard to decide whether to hold up a paddle (like the DWTS judges) or go out and have a cigarette.

Not to be outdone, Julianne – in a breath-taking, red sequined dress – performed a Latin dance with her support dancers. Then, Derek joined her, still shirtless, as a toreador, and they flawlessly danced a paso doble, with Derek doing some fancy twirling of Julianne’s skirt, as if he were preparing for a bullfight.

Costumes that would forgive no figure flaws were a large part of the evening, especially for Julianne, who changed numerous times. Derek served as the show’s emcee while his sister changed, but there were several times when it was the support dancers who got the chance to show off their prowess.

In addition to the dancing, Derek and Julianne showed off their vocal chops in a mesmerizing, harmonizing duet of “Say Something.”

What really tickled the crowd was a rendition of “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)," illustrating their numerous career achievements and a quick comparison to another Utah brother/sister act, Donny and Marie Osmond.

Even the audience got into the act as Derek pulled Kansas Cityan Marisa Parkhurst, formerly of Bancroft, Iowa, out to move in the aisle to “Mustang Sally.”

“I texted my husband and told him I danced with Derek Hough,” she said.

His response?

“He wondered if he was single,” she said with a laugh.

Again, not to be outdone, Julianne got several men on stage, including Freddie Linden, 11, of McCook Lake, S.D., who said he could now die and go to heaven.

“We usually don’t bring children on stage,” Julianne assured the crowd and possibly toned down the gyrations a bit as she danced with the young man, who turns 12 on Tuesday and enters sixth grade at Dakota Valley school in the fall.

One would think after nonstop dancing – even the slower moves had intensity and athleticism – the finale would give everyone a chance to catch their breath, but the dancers knocked it out of the ballpark – literally throwing huge, white beach balls into the audience.

They ended the evening emphasizing their theme of “Motion = Emotion” and urged everyone to dare to be inspired by what they love.

It was clear in a 90-minute show, the Houghs have plenty of motion, emotion and inspiration
