Well, you've read the notes, you've pranced about whilst reading the notes, and now you are ready to post until the madcap cows come home after their evening with fern.
-
I did read the notes, yes. But no prancing was involved.
George Lucas is on TV (Charlie Rose) as I write this. He has great hair! This is a man with major hair.
DVD player - I VITELLONI about which I posted a few days ago. Great. (But nobody with hair as great as George's.)
CD - Bill Evans - Conversations with Myself
VCR - unplugged

Oops (spoo, spelled backwards) we got us a birthday to celebrate. Notes are being amended.

Happy Birthday DR Donna.

Last night I saw a documentary motion picture entitled Los Angeles Plays Itself. This comprehensive film (2 hours and 49 minutes, plus an intermission) takes as its subject the depiction of Los Angeles in cinema. Part one is devoted to Los Angeles as background, and part two is devoted to Los Angeles as subject.
The film is fascinating. One sees familiar landmarks such as L.A. City Hall and the Bradbury Building in numerous clips, as well as more mundane locations used to establish the atmosphere of L.A. in its various incarnations. Quite a few noir films are highlighted, such as Mildred Pierce, The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity, as well as lesser known titles. Blade Runner, too, and many of its imitators (most of them poor) are given ample clip time.
In part two Chinatown, of course, and L.A. Confidential are showcased, along with several other films in which L.A. truly does play a character.
The filmmaker's narration is filled with sardonic wit, which keeps the audience engaged and provides a good pace to the film. Some of the transitions are a bit jarring, however, and at the end of the film the narration gets waaaaay too preachy for me.

DVD" Chaplin in "The Kid"
CD: Most recently played: Pussycat "Mississippi'.
VCR: The first episode of this season's "Six Feet Under". We get to see the first one just as the series ends for you guys. From recent comments it sounds like the series should have ended after series 3. I've had to line up friends to try and remember to copy the show for the next six weeks.

Good Evening! Good Morning!
-I went back to Best Buy, and got a new mouse for my laptop - again. And it works this time! :)
-I got my hair cut. It was a little strange and nice feeling the air on my scalp again. And it's sooo much cooler in this hotter weather.
-I had dinner - sushi.
-I played the "strange show" tonight.
-I took the Metro back to Pasadena. On my first leg, the driver ended up overshooting a station - he put the brakes on a little late. So, he ended up skipping it. On my second leg, the train was running about 15 minutes late. But I made it back very close to my usual time.
-Oh, and I think I may have exchanged four quarters for a dollar bill with a "professional woman" so that she could call her next "client" or someone else. ;)
More in the morning.
Goodnight.
-
Good morning to you JRand. If Ben and Michael S arrive on the board I will know I should be bound for bed.. This is a family site - not the same as bound in bed.

I think the Abraham Lincoln audiotronics display was for the Illinois exhibit, NOT the Indiana one - but I don't know for sure.
Yes, DR DiT - last night was opening night. We got LOTS of laughs, but I am in agreement with MR BK here. But of course, those are really the ONLY people I deal with here....the non-professional (not at the Phoenix in Indy, of course). LEARN YOUR LINES.....your ad libs are NOT clever and they did NOT get us out of trouble....YOU got us into trouble to begin with my skipping, leaving out, and otherwise mangling the lines in that scene! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
DR MS lovely photos....and a lovely photo from DRLAURA. DRMATTH is doing a wonderful Jane Russell in UNDERWATER impression there!
Work today - but off tomorrow! How Grand To Do Nothing Until Going To The Theatre To Sell Tickets At 5 p.m.
My mother, two of my sisters, and some friends from High School (!) are coming to see the show tonight!
I hope the CD and book boxes are clearly marked!
Thanks to DRMBARNUM for some lovely Allison Hayes photos! Whew! Next Tuesday will mark the HHW debut of Miss Hayes in the daring two-piece swimsuit! ....for those not interested in wine bottles!
DVD - a foreign import, EL CID, widescreen and stereo....good buy at $12!
CD - Jeepers Creepers!
VCR - The Perry Como Show, courtesy DR MBARNUM!

Hello and goodnight DR Tom.
Hello and off to work with you DRJrand.
Lovely pics DR Michael.
Nothing in the VCR. Channel 21 seems to go into fundraising mode about every 3 weeks so no Two's Company.
CD at work. I listened to the fun Golden Rainbow yesterday. Today I will listen to a 1972 television special, S'Wonderful, S'Marvelous, S'Gershwin with Jack Lemmon, Fred Astaire, Leslie Uggams, Peter Nero, Larry Kert, Linda Bennett and Robert Guillaume. Anthony was finally able to get this great piece onto CD. I taped it on cassette many years ago but the quality isn't so good. I haven't listened to it in years so I'm looking foward to that. It was broadcast on NBC as part of Bell System Family Theatre. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Single Program, Variety or Musical Variety and Popular Music and it won a Peabody Award. When we go back to Museum of Television and Radio I need to see if they have a copy. I would love to see it again.
I will also listen to some BBC radio programs I missed over my vacation.
I have to work tomorrow (Saturday) for most of the day but then I will be joining friends (Anthony will be on Long Island) for a night of food and bowling. Nice break from the work ethic.
Happy Birthday Donna!

Donna - Happy Birthday!!!!!!

JRand54,
Have an excellent show tonight.
How did the open-fly scene go?
-
LOL....
Oh, Happy Birthday, DRDONNA! So sorry to have neglected you in my FPOD (first post of the day).
DiT- the open fly scene went well....of course I am walking around singing 'Venus in Blue Jeans' at the time, so it could have been my singing that was getting the response.
Oh and we did get a nice standing ovation....so thanks for the vibes everyone....
-
Oh some man stayed afterwards to tell me that he used to like to come to our theatre BEFORE we started using all the bad language - we are terrible people....and on and on and on.... I just said "Thanks for coming, sorry you didn't like it...." And of course I wanted to say: "You should hear what we left out, you twit. Stay home, we don't need your eight dollars!"
-
Yes the Lincoln exhibit was in the Illinois Pavillion - The Land of Lincoln. It was then moved to Disneyland where in the days before one price covered everything it was the only exhibit that did not require an A, B, C, D or E ticket.
CD - The demo of BROOKLYN - THE MUSICAL. Based on the demo I think I'll skip the show. It's one of those shows with a rock score for people who prefer rock to show music, and to me it sounds more like shouting than singing.
DVD - The second volume of MY LITTLE MARGIE. That show is more consistantly funny than any sitcom on the air today (or in the last twenty years).
VHS - Nothing

For DR Stuart:
Karen was voted off Big Brother last night.
Here is the live show summary from last night:

DR Jane, re: talking on the phone while eating.
I have actually never heard of anyone calling someone while eating. But I've also never heard of anyone using the computer while eating either. :)
I think I agree with DR Jay on this one. I'd wait till you finished to call. But if someone calls you, then I think it's perfectly fine to give them the option of you calling them back.
The only person I really talk to when I'm eating dinner is my sister (she sometimes calls while I'm eating).
I suppose it really shouldn't feel much different than talking to people at the dinner table. But I don't have a hands free. So for me it's a bit awkward to talk and hold the phone at the same time. :)
-
Thank you, thank you, thank you (that's three thank you's), DR Jennifer.
Media Check:
CD/Car: Nothing. Was listening to radio for a change.....
CD/Office: Christiane Noll: "A Broadway Love Story"
DVD: Empty
VCR: Unfortunately NOT a tape of last night's BB5. Totally forgot to set the thing!

DR Stuart, you didn't miss much on BB5. It was just sad. My Karen left, and she was quite emotional.
I am hoping Nikomas will win.

Media check:
VCR: A movie I taped off of TCM yesterday. Don't recall what it was, but I am sure it will be good. LOL!
DVD: An episode of Addams Family and an episode of HAWAIIAN EYE, both with Laurie Mitchell guest starring. I taped them and made a DVDr for her. I had forgotten how darn funny The Addams Family is...I was laughing my head off!
CD: Nothing, but I have been listening to a very relaxing cassette tape (remember those) of some music by our own DR JMK.

Speaking of which - DR JMK- Frances Farmer Archivist - there is already a pretty good book about Communist party activities in Hollywood during the 1940's...it is called Hollywood Party and Frances is mentioned a bit, though her story is NOT dwelt upon.
-
Do I understand, JRand, that you read and liked Hollywood Party? This was a book I picked up in a Borders and decided not to buy, as it seemed to accept the premise that secret subversive messages were inserted into Hollywood films of the 40s and 50s. But if I was wrong to overlook it, I'd love to know.
Below is from the Amazon.com review:
Billingsley works to fill in some of the historical gaps with Hollywood Party. The information on the role of Communist (and Communist- sympathetic) screenwriters is not particularly revelatory to those familiar with the basic outlines of the story, although Billingsley pushes the Communist angle hard, noting the Party's lockstep support of Stalin and what might charitably be called his "policies," as well as the vicious backlash against any leftist who spoke out against the Communists. His chronicle of Communist efforts to control the studio workers' unions, however, illuminates a less glamorous but perhaps more substantial aspect of the story. Those in search of celebrity dirt will be mildly disappointed; there are several star-studded scenes, but mostly mild anecdotes on the level of Ronald Reagan's gradual realization that, as an SAG activist, he was being played for a dupe by the Reds. Unless, that is, Billingsley is writing about a Communist or a fellow traveler, in which case no personal quirk, from screenwriter Dalton Trumbo's penchant for working in his bathtub to Bertolt Brecht's lack of hygiene to left-wing journalist Ella Winter's mannishly short hair, is overlooked

DR MBarnum, I also was a HUGE fan of THE ADDAMS FAMILY on TV. I always thought it was funnier and wittier than THE MUNSTERS, but almost all of my friends preferred THE MUNSTERS. THE MUNSTERS recently got a first season DVD boxed set. I'm hoping the same treatment awaits THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
DR JRand - Jane Russell? My gosh, I've been compared to Quasimodo and even Alfred E. Newman, but never Jane Russell. Not sure if I'm flattered or offended. :D
DR Tomovoz - I know lots of people did not like this season of SIX FEET UNDER. I can't say that overall it equals the first or third seasons, but I honestly enjoyed it for the most part, got pulled into the storylines even of characters I've never been fond of (like Rico), and got very involved with Nate's somewhat endless plunge into despair and then confused trouble. I know some folks simply gave up on the show halfway through this season. You couldn't ave torn me away from it.
-
Well, no DRNoel - the review is accurate. The book does have an agenda that is pushed but not particularly convincing in its argument. It just put Frances' story in context with the other activities around her, rather than isolating her actions. And I think, as DRJMK will attest, much of the story remains untold.
HOLLYWOOD PARTY is a lite read rather than a reference - and I think I got it for a couple of bucks at Half Price Books.

Friday Media Check:

For some reason I have always liked The Munsters more then the Addams Family. I don't know why, but really I think that both shows are hilarious. The thing with The Munsters, and also with Gilligan's Island and Mr. Ed, is the casting...if they had cast different performers I really believe the shows would be terribly unfunny...some of the jokes could end up being very corny if not for the talented actors and actresses, they really hit the jackpot with the people who ended up in the various roles...and I would say that is why these shows are still on reruns even today.
And yes I would most welcome an Addams Family DVD set!

BK, re: Thursday night's Must See Tv
I think most people like to watch Survivor and the Apprentice live cause otherwise the results will be spoilied. A lot of radio shows and newspapers talk about the results the next morning (not to mention the people who talk about it).
-
And speaking of Gilligan's Island....I had a dream last night that my younger brother Dan, and I and Tina Louise drove up from Medford to visit my stepmother and father (who is actually deceased) in Roseburg. Tina was very nice in my dream although we had some disagreement in that I wanted to leave early Sunday morning for the drive home and she didn't want to leave until late afternoon! LOL!
-
When I came back from my walk this morning the turtle was sitting in front of my door - on top of the Sunday NY Times my landlady had left me. I guess he wanted to catch up on the news.
When I came in I took a photo of Abie, who was looking very noble.
-
DR Stuart, you didn't miss much on BB5. It was just sad. My Karen left, and she was quite emotional.
I am hoping Nikomas will win.
I think Jennifer will be gone this week unless she wins the veto. I like the idea that it will be a live veto comp (or is it just a live meeting?) and then live eviction on Tuesday. It will not give people much time to think.
I was actually not sorry to see Karen go. Although after seeing how she played the game (seeing all those diary sessions yesterday and last week where she explained herself), I think she was a very good player. And I give her credit for being much smarter than she originally seemed.
With Drew as HOH I will be interested to see if he nominates Cowboy or Diane (since he promised them both he would take them to final two). Who do you guys think he will keep his promise with? I think diane (but I am annoyed he promised cowboy).
I think he will put cowboy up, and tell him that he would not have him vote out his sister. Cowboy will believe that.
I also think that since Drew knows both Cowboy and Diane will take him to final two, that he won't try to win the final HOH. I wonder if that will happen next tuesday after the eviction? (or probably they will start it and we will have to hear about what happens on the feeds).
-
And as I leave for lunch I will push us to Page 2.

Well, it's been at least 12 hours since an author has emailed me requesting FF information and I am going through withdrawal. :P
Yes, JR and Noel, Hollywood Party leaves a lot to be desired. I had to laugh when this newest author emailed me yesterday that there is very little documentation for the CP "going after" errant members. He should see the FOIA stuff I got on my very own Uncle, who was a well-known CP member and union activist. The Party was out to destroy him after he "recanted"--and this was documented by the FBI, no less!
I must admit I did something a little funny yesterday--I emailed this author telling him (the absolute truth), "You're at least the third or fourth author who's contacted me recently for information on FF." Of course I received a panicked reply asking for details. For some reason, this amuses me. Guess it's time to get a life.
We had a totally mah-velous opening night for our new Tigard Pops Choir fall/winter session last night. It looks like the Choir will be at least 60 voices strong, which is fantastic. We will be doing our usual eclectic bunch of tunes, including Nowhere Man, In Your Eyes (Peter Gabriel), and Blue Christmas, all arranged by moi. It is so much fun to do these choral arrangements and then actually have a large and largely competent choir to sing them!!
DR MB: thanks for listening. That tape was done as meditation music (in other words, it's perfectly fine to fall asleep to it). I joked that Side A was for beginning meditators, as it is mostly short, fairly consonant and "trance-like." Side B I used to say was for advanced meditators, as it is decidedly more spacy, almost a half hour long and has lots of synth effects. The tape was done as a fund-raiser for a "new thought" church I used to be Music Director for. If any H/K's want a copy, if you'll pay postage, I'm happy to send one to you more-or-less gratis.
And re: amateurish behavior at shows. BK, I believe I can top your sound-man story. About five days before Going to Pot: The Reefer Madness Musical opened here in Portland (and we already had sold-out houses for the first 2 weeks), three (count 'em, three) cast members walked out, including the leading lady and leading man, in some ill-thought-out mutiny attempt to bring the show down. It was really ugly, but I as producer had to rise above, treat them with a modicum of respect that they decidedly did not deserve, and move on. It turns out we got three new stellar performers within 24 hours, all of whom were much better than the originals. My only qualm is the original three had already recorded their parts for the cast album, so they're somewhat immortalized. They have all three paid the price for this despicable behavior, as Portland is a very, very small theatrical community.
Media check: we caught up on Amazing Race last night. Betsy and I haven't hated anyone as much as we do Colin for quite some time. If Christie apologizes to him again for his boorish behavior I am going to reach through the tv and slap her. At which point she will apologize to me. :) And in DVD land I am watching/listening to The Asphalt Jungle, which has one of the more pretentious commentaries I've heard recently. If this guy says "FAAAAB-ulous" one more time, I'm going to reach into the DVD player and slap him. At which point, Christie will apologize to me.
In CD land I'm listening a lot to the Celtic fusion band Kila. If you haven't heard their stuff and like Celtic music, I highly recommend them. Fun, fun stuff and quite invigorating.
-
What was it that Luther Adler wrote in a copy of GOLDEN BOY when Frances' sister asked him to sign it?
"Frances where are you? Don't disappear."
-
Boxes are all clearly marked, and in most cases I think they tried to keep everything in alphabetical order.
I want to be clear that I like the fellow who does our sound, he's a nice earnest fellow, and I don't begrudge him school - I begrudge him the late notice where it's just difficult to get someone in to LEARN the show. That's amateur. We can't expect someone to come in without having the benefit of having seen the show and having sat with him. That's amateur, but that's what we're being asked to do. I can't and won't have the cast run the show as a rehearsal. But, a new sound person who hasn't had a chance to see the show won't know who is who in the cast, therefore they may leave one of the mics open by mistake, they may not turn on a mic that should be on, I mean it's just stupid and not the way professional behavior works.
Excellent vibes to Jrand for opening night.
Re Brooklyn the Musical: This was the show that the "people" who were producing Nudie and Meltz and Ernest took on - and in so doing could not raise the balance of the money needed for the film, and in so doing wanted to push the out-of-town production of Nudie six months to a year down the line. I bolted immediately - I shall let karma do the rest. They are also apparently doing something so shameless that it's hilarious - they've sent people on to every message board every time they post something at the Brooklyn website - including the songs on that CD. In order for them not to look like the obvious shills they are, they sort of are negative about the show so that another person of theirs can come on and say they love it. They have stated that they don't care if the publicity is negative as long as people are talking about it. Unfortunately for them, someone found out about it and posted and no one seems to be playing their game. From everything I've heard, it's awful.
-

Okay you may hit me, but I sort of like Colin and Christie.
Yes, he is obnoxious. But IMO most of that is due to the fact that he has been edited to be the bad guy. Sure he is impatient. But they are a very talented team. I cannot believe that they continue to come in first every week. Quite amazing. And I would guess that most of that must be attributed to him (since we rarely see him doing anything).
This week's episode was good. Although they totally manipulated us into thinking that the twins and Chip/Kim were racing it out at the end (even though you could clearly see the twins ended in the dark - so they must have been way behind). I guess it's all in the editing.
I was disappointed in Chip's stupid decision not to use the yield. But then the twins made an even worse mistake (doing the longer mud challenge). Why did they do that?
I am shocked the moms are still in it. How they finished 2nd is amazing.
-
Thanks for the vibes Mr BK!
You know I was once IN a show that was very bad, and people came to see if it was AS BAD as was being said (it was) - there were cast members who were happy to play to large audiences of people who enjoyed seeing a BAD show. I didn't....
And there was another badly directed production of a play that again was being talked about as one of the worst ever (it was) DR Evil KURT and I saw it, and one cast member told us afterwards, that he thought all the talk was great....it brought people into the theatre.
It is possible to have bad publicity - or maybe publicity for the wrong reasons.....and even though Oscar Wilde said that the only thing worse than being talked about is NOT being talked about, I am NOT so sure...
-
Colin and Christy I do not care for at all on Amazing Race! I just had to say that. And if they win, I will be ever so disappointed!
I was not sorry to see the twins lose..even though they are from Eugene, Oregon.

Anyone with a brain will want Diane with him (or her) in the final two. She won't get a single vote.
And Diane's repeat "why me" act after the eviction of Karen was SO typical of her two-faced hypocritical self. When she turned on Drew and said, "Well you voted her out, too," she was essentially complaining that Karen was blaming only her. Well DUH! Karen is the one Diane had a pact/alliance with...not Drew. Karen did not expect Drew's vote.
Diane is a JUDASETTE (I cannot possibly be PC about this, so don't even castigate me about it).
I'm not sure what might be in store for the next competitions, including veto, but Nakomis is the best of the lot of them on mental competitions.
I wish Cowboy/Michael would wake up and smell the coffee. Drew won't carry him into the finals because he could get too many votes. Nakomis might not be able to win against Drew, either, but it would be closer than Cowboy, so Drew won't want Nakomis in the finals.
Nakomis is my favorite, too, MBarnum. I want her to win the veto and then vote to oust Diane. She can beat Cowboy at anything physical or mental, and she's better than Drew at the mental.
Nakomis has a chance. It would be best if it were Nakomis and Diane in the final, but I can't figure out how that could happen.
-
Mr. Orr -- What a pleasure to see you back at HHW. I hope you and Joe are doing okay. My best to you both.
-
Despite my dislike of the Demo CD, I am NOT a shill for BROOKLYN - THE MUSICAL. It's not show music, it's pop. It is really a show for fans of current pop music, not show music, and I don't think there are enough of them who even bother going to a Broadway theatre. Between DRACULA and BROOKLYN, it looks like the pickings will be slim for us show queens this season, with mainly revisals and revivals to look forward to until after the first of the year.

I just read that Frank Thomas, classic Disney animator who worked on SNOW WHITE and many pictures that followed has passed away. He never needed a computer to animate anything.

DVD Player -- Packed
VCR -- Broken, but packed
CD Player (at work) -- SCROOGE, Anthony Newley
CD Player (car) -- SCROOGE, Anthony Newley
CD Player (home) -- SCROOGE, Anthony Newley[/s] Packed
CD Player (computer) --SCROOGE, Anthony Newley
I must confess that prior to being cast as Scrooge, I had not seen the stage production or read it, but I had just assumed that it was basically a straight transfer from the film version to the stage. I remember after the film was released, but prior to the availability of SCROOGE, THE MUSICAL, for the stage, many theater companies in this area were presenting modified versions of the show - unofficially, of course. I didn't know that Leslie Bricusse had revamped the show as a stage vehicle for his long-time friend and collaborator, Mr. Newley.
Anthony Newley has always been an acquired taste for most Americans. I think they either love him or hate him. Personally, although not fond of all of his work, the Original Cast Recording of ROAR / SMELL remains one of my favorite CDs of all time.
That said, it is a shame that Newley and Briccuse did not develop this idea in the late Seventies or early Eighties, instead of waiting until the Nineties. Mr. Newley's voice, which was always unusual at best, is sadly lacking in this 1992 recording from the Birmingham production of the show. There is supposedly a 1995 - 96 recording the London production that is apparently out of print There are several songs that were not in the film that have been added to the stage production. I actually find them, for the most part, pleasant additions, but overall the recording is a sad reminder of a great performer that used to be.
The good news is that since Mr. Newley's vocal range has narrowed considerably since his ROAR / SMELL days, so I may actually be able to sing the songs as written!

After perusing the NY Times, Pete the Turtle went on to snack on some leaves in the yard...

Anyone with a brain will want Diane with him (or her) in the final two.
.
Well Cowboy doesn't. :)
I think Karen was mad because DIANE IS A LIAR. I'm amazed Jen could be so civil to her.
I still do not get why Diane could not have been honest and told Karen she had to vote her out for strategic reasons. She would have understood. It's the lies that got crazy.
I'm not sure what might be in store for the next competitions, including veto, but Nakomis is the best of the lot of them on mental competitions.
Well we don't actually know how good everyone is, since many have been throwing the comps. Drew seemed really good last night (as did Cowboy, surprisingly).
Jen actually seemed to win when she wasn't even trying!
Well Jen has to win the veto. If she does that she can win. That is the key for her (since drew will nominate her). If she wins the veto then Diane and Cowboy will be the nominees this week (and Jen can keep either).
But then she would have to win HOH and she could take Diane. It will be interesting to see if she would take the most deserving, more honest player (like karen said she would do) or diane, who she could win against.
Jen's destiny is in her own hands.
I didn't think she had a shot anymore. But if the producers slant the comps in her favor, anything can happen.
Btw, were any of you guys surprised that karen and jen didn't help each other in the last veto (like drew/cowboy/diane did). If they had, they would have certainly gotten it. ANd then karen would still be around.

Thanks for the vibes DRPANNI.....I was meaning to ask you....what did you think of Miss Carroll Baker in THE CARPETBAGGERS? I thought she had some really good scenes and looked so beautiful....one of her best roles played full out....and a credit on a line all by itself!

DR Panni has put us into widescreen. :)
But I love Pete! I want a turtle!

DR JRand, when I read your post I was thinking that I must have missed the dog picture. But then I thought about it and remembered it was on Page 1. That was so long ago, I'd forgotten. :)
Btw, good play vibes to you.

Thanks DRJENNIFER!

I must post to get us out of turtle-scope...

Just a few more and we're on Page Three...

JRand - Yes, I thought Carroll Baker was excellent in THE CARPETBAGGERS. And lovely, indeed.

For those of you Dear Readers not suffering through it, I thought you would like to know that it is quintessential earthquake weather here in Southern California.
-
Don't say that, DR Jay! Spit now - or do something to ward off the Evil Eye (and I'm not talking about bk's cleaning lady).
-
For those of you Dear Readers not suffering through it, I thought you would like to know that it is quintessential earthquake weather here in Southern California.
Nice to see you around, DB.
You may be having earthquake weather, but yesterday brought us the remnants of Frances in these here parts. Apparently, between the 4 - 6 inches of rain she brought with her, and the unusually wet summer we had, the Erie Canal decided to crest yesterday sending the town in which I work, and several surrounding towns, into all-out States of Emergency. In an area that sees 100+ inches of snow each winter, often 6 - 12 at a time, and never cancels classes, they cancelled classes at 11 am yesterday. Didn't close the school and send people home; just cancelled classes.
As it was, my brother-in-law, in Brighton (just south east of Rochester proper) had about 18 inches of water in his basement yesterday, as did the rest of his street.
Fortunately, most of the stuff in the basement (except the washer & dryer, and the carpeting) were toys for their 2.5 year old. As we have been saying (well, OK, as I have been saying): Clifford, le gross chien rouge, et morte. He didn't even float to the top like so many other of the toys.....

Earthquake WEATHER?

I wish they would stop talking about Hurricane Frances, I am getting paranoid.

My ultimate Frances Farmer paranoid story:
Frances had a nice bungalow type home in the 5100 block of North Park Avenue in Indianapolis. She decided she wanted to make some improvements on the house and talked to a contractor about a staircase to the second floor attic. She insisted to him that the stair case be no wider than a certain number. He argued with her that that would be too narrow. She finally found a contractor who would build to her specifications.....and build her a staircase that was too narrow for two men carrying a stretcher to traverse....just in case.

The book, I believe, has been corrected to within an inch of its life. So, all that's left is for me to add the dedication, the acknowledgments and I'll be done.
-
Re Die Moldau - my favorite version of the piece (mentioned in Kritzerland), the one that got me hooked on classical music, has never been released on CD - it's by Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Wonderful rendition.
-
Happy birthday, Dear Reader Donna!
Panni, Abie and Pete are so handsome.
I finally got a crack at one of the working computers, but I have nothing to say.
-
Another pool day today, but the skies became overcast and blocked most of the sun for much of the afternoon. That's OK. I don't really need any darker tan than I have.
-
I'm posting in a feeble attempt at being social. Otherwise, I'm cranky! I haven't been able to get a good night's sleep since returning from the shore. Perhaps I'll have to move there permanently for health reasons...
Me Media Check
CD Player (at home): nothing
CD Player (at work): nothing (but I did listen to a live recording of the original cast of A Chorus Line that I downloaded this morning)
DVD: nothing
VHS: I know I taped somthing this week, but I can't remember what it is at the mo'.
Belated Leg Breaking to DR JRand!
Happy Birthday to Donna!
-
I enjoyed JOEY even if the cable box cut itself off at 8:30 and the show was scheduled to end at 8:40. Stupid me should have anticipated that and just left the box on instead of letting it cut itself on and off. Argh!
Also enjoyed MEDICAL INVESTIGATION in high def last night. It was in ER's time period for one showing only, and another episode of it comes on tonight at its regular time of 10.
-
Yes, indeed, I meant to tell DR JRand to break legs.
-
Re Die Moldau - my favorite version of the piece (mentioned in Kritzerland), the one that got me hooked on classical music, has never been released on CD - it's by Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Wonderful rendition.
Great news BK.
This wonderful piece will now special to DR Jane who watched the river's flow on her journey. A fine evocative composition that will always bring Prague back to me (and thoughts of Benjamin too).
-
Thank you DR Matt for the comments re "Six Feet Under".
-
DR Donna is as always very busy indeed.. She hopes to check in this weekend. Of course she may have done so and I have missed a post in my quick read.
-
I'll be on my way to the gym shortly. I haven't heard a peep about the house, so I'm assuming that as of the morning I'll be going with my second choice which, prior to my seeing the other house, was my first choice. It's actually on the same street I'm on, two blocks north and only a one digit change from my current address.
-
Well as for media..........Nothing I haven't hooked up my system since I have been back and since the electricity has been back on.
This weekend I will catch up on everything I meant to do last weekend.

Wow, may I say I'm impressed by your knowledge of disney and the 1964 World's fair, SWW!...
quote:
Now, here's a trivia question for you, Francois, one for which I'm not sure of the answer. Disney used AudioAnimatronics for four attractions at the 1964 World's Fair. I remember "It's a Small World" as being the big star attraction, and the Dinosaurs (later incorporated into the Train Ride at Disneyland) as the second. The third was "The Carousel of the Future," a GE-sponsored event, also later transferred to Disneyland (and eventually replaced with "America Sings").
.... You are right, the fourth was Great Moments with Mr Lincoln for the Illinois Pavilion............
"The likeness of Abraham Lincoln was created as the first fully functioning audio-animatronic human figure. In a presentation entitled, "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln", the moving model of Abraham Lincoln stands, speaks, and gestures to the audience.
The figure model of Mr. Lincoln debuted at the State of Illinois Pavillion during the 1964 New York World's Fair, appearing with other Disney-designed attractions like The Carousel of Progress (General Electric), It's a Small World (Pepsi Cola), and The Primeval World (Ford Motor Company)."

Well Cowboy doesn't. :)
That rather confirms my theory on his intellect!
;)
I think Karen was mad because DIANE IS A LIAR. I'm amazed Jen could be so civil to her.
This is one of the best things about Jennifer -- she's been adhering to the "civil" principle the entire game. It's a great strategy, too, since Drew was stunned by it last night. He couldn't get over how well she took it and accepted, graciously, that their little coup was good strategy.
I still do not get why Diane could not have been honest and told Karen she had to vote her out for strategic reasons. She would have understood. It's the lies that got crazy.Well we don't actually know how good everyone is, since many have been throwing the comps. Drew seemed really good last night (as did Cowboy, surprisingly). Jen actually seemed to win when she wasn't even trying!
Actually, Jen has thrown competitions, but when Karen consistently failed to step up, Jen had to step in once and win to keep Cowboy and Diane from winning. It doesn't surprise me that Drew won last night. Diane isn't interested in anyone or anything but herself, mostly, and those questions about what happened to other players would not be her forte.
Cowboy ALWAYS looks upset when he loses. Last week, he was leading and grinning from ear to ear. Then Jen stepped up and answered all the rest of the questions correctly and won. He looked totally crushed and more "dazed" than usual (if that's possible). He hasn't won a thing other than the America's Choice phone call. And that was a sympathy vote, I'm sure. I know I was sick of him moaning and groaning about April and Chason and how much he misses them.
Btw, were any of you guys surprised that karen and jen didn't help each other in the last veto (like drew/cowboy/diane did). If they had, they would have certainly gotten it. And then karen would still be around.
No, not surprised. I think it's the first time anyone has ever plotted a joint effort like that. It was truly imaginative and well-planned/well-played. Diane is no fool. I'd want her on my side rather than against me. But...she makes me a-scared!
:(
-
Happy Birthday to DR Donna if she's reading.
DR Stuart, like I said we had horrible rain here yesterday too. I have never been soaked like that while holding a big umbrella.
-
Question was: Why didn't Karen and Jennifer work together in the veto when they saw the others doing so.
I think it's the first time anyone has ever plotted a joint effort like that. It was truly imaginative and well-planned/well-played.
I meant once they saw what was happening, why didn't they work together? That cost them both the game.
-
I downloaded the songs from Brooklyn available on their website.
All I can say is ewwwwwwwwwww (in the immortal words of Kate Monster). I respect Eden Espinosa for being able to do what she can but still... Once Upon a Time's finale is actually painfully high to LISTEN to. And for no reason... it's kind of like a "look what I can do" moment and nothing more...
-
DR RLP, do you think Cowboy has thrown any comps? :)
-
DR MattH, I saw the end of Joey (I was expecting the Apprentice). I can tell you how the show ended if you want.
-
Question was: Why didn't Karen and Jennifer work together in the veto when they saw the others doing so.I meant once they saw what was happening, why didn't they work together? That cost them both the game.
Jen was so far ahead of Karen that Karen would have been no help to her. That, and I don't believe it occurred to them -- even as they were pondering why Cowboy was helping Diane -- what was happening.
-
DR RLP, do you think Cowboy has thrown any comps? :)
ROTFLMAO!
Heavens NO!
-
I have finally returned. Seems I left just a few minutes too early last night and missed the discussion as to weather or not I’m rude. –LOL
DRLaura-incredible shot. :)
Approximately one year before Bryan was born Keith and I were on It’s A Small World riding behind a couple with a darling little blond hair blue eyed boy. Before the ride ended we had decided to have a baby. And yes, we waited until after we returned home to begin our attempts. Okay, who did I beat to that comment. I think there are certain people on this site who are a very bad influence on me. Before posting here I would never have had the need to make that last statement. ;D
Now back to read today's posts.

Re Die Moldau - my favorite version of the piece (mentioned in Kritzerland), the one that got me hooked on classical music, has never been released on CD - it's by Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Wonderful rendition.
I am always on the lookout for praise of/performance recommendations for favorite pieces of music.
My absolute FAVORITE recording of "Enigma Variations" is one that was on the Angel lp label with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic. I found it during a Thanksgiving 1974 trip to London and have favored it ever since. I've other recordings of it that have great things to be said about them, but the Boult "feels" best to me (I admire the Bernstein but it's a bit langorous in pacing).
Best of all is that I found this recording on CD and it arrived this very day via UPS. I can't wait to hear it, although it's on the "budget" Seraphim label. I fear it won't be as sonically splendid as the LP remains, but at a cost of $3.98, it's totally worth it!

I just read that Frank Thomas, classic Disney animator who worked on SNOW WHITE and many pictures that followed has passed away. He never needed a computer to animate anything.
Oh, my!
I'm learning this from you, Wel!
One of the greatest animators EVER in this time! Ollie Johnston, neighbor and partner and lifetime friend must be very sad!
We should all be sad!
The official site has not been updated yet!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DONNA!
Jennifer-LOL- I like to read the paper while I eat but Bogie has decided he must stretch out on the paper while I pet him.
WEL, My Little Margie-lucky you.
MBarnum and Matt H, I was an ADAMS FAMILY fan but tired quickly of THE MUNSTERS.
Panni, I never tire of photos of Abie.
I need to switch computers before reading page 2.
-
BK can you explain this picture please?
-
The Boult Enigma Variations is my fave as well.
The pic is from the Mark Taper Forum production of Forget-Me-Not-Lane - that's me and Bud Cort. We've just been down trying to have sport with some soldiers, with Bud's character trying to fool them.
-
We haz come to a screeching halt. I'm back from the gym - quite a workout on the bike - forty-five minutes worth. Thus far, since my gym sojourn began, I have dropped five pounds.
-

Those were the days..... :)
Yes, those were the days.
I can still recall the awe I felt the first time I saw Lincoln, my hero to begin with. I thought it was wonderful and had to return many times to see it.
The best part of The Carousel of Progress was the dog-so cute
-
Thus far, since my gym sojourn began, I have dropped five pounds.
I hope whoever you may have dropped them on accepted your appology graciously.
Still, it's a good idea to keep in mind, placing those extra pounds gently on a secure resting place is a far more acceptable practice.
-
JRand-great vibes for a great show.
TCB how is the moving going?
Panni I think that is the cutest picture of Pete so far. :)
François, very touching article. I especially enjoyed the story of John.
Michael Shayne-great picture of Bruce.
Bruce-congrats on the 5 pounds and hoping you hear a peep by the morning.
-
Jane,
Great Moments With Mr Lincoln still plays at Disneyland -- CA -- and is shortened at Walt Disney World where Lincoln gets competition from.... get ready... an Audio Animatronic W Bush!!! YES! "You" President THERE speaks without the help of a .... prompter!
But then, a dummy's still a dummy!
I mean an audio animatronic character!
And Carousel of Progress plays, from time to time, in Florida, as Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress, a version VERY close to what was created when Walt was around, hence 1964 I would say!
There's A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow
Shining At The End Of Everyday
And Tomorrow's Just A Dream Away....
-- Carousel of Progress theme by the Sherman Brothers!
Disney at its best!

Der Brucer is hogging the new DVD stack right now.
He did some on-line ordering, and has been rewarded by two DVDs of Dame Diana Rigg as Mrs. Bradley, who runs around 1920s England solving mysteries and wearing cloche hats. She is accompanied by her chauffeur, who sometimes doesn't wear his uniform.
He has also received the first two seasons of the Tim Hutton/Maury Chaykin Nero Wolfe mysteries. He's told me that the two NW boxed sets also entitle him to a Nero Wolfe t-shirt. This baffles me, as I cannot imagine Nero Wolfe every wearing a t-shirt, and further cannot imagine anyone else being able to wear such a shirt without dissapearing in the folds and folds of cloth.
-
BK,
I do get some people from L.A. at "my" hotel and I do tell them about What If, hoping they'll go and see the show!
(Hope my enveloppe'll be in the mail soon! Thanks!)
-
Wow, may I say I'm impressed by your knowledge of disney and the 1964 World's fair, SWW!...
Hey, I'm a Burbank boy, born and raised. The two big companies were Disney and Lockheed. These things come naturally to me.

Great news BK.
This wonderful piece will now special to DR Jane who watched the river's flow on her journey. A fine evocative composition that will always bring Prague back to me (and thoughts of Benjamin too).
Also one of Keith’s favorites, as he reminded me while we were in Prague. Currently we are listening to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. It’s coming on the “big city” now.
Keith just found what I had originally been looking for, our album with Herbert Von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. We will listen to it next. :)
-
Hey, I'm a Burbank boy, born and raised. The two big companies were Disney and Lockheed. These things come naturally to me.
Don't look for..... excuses, please! :)
When I was young and got my first encyclopedia.... I checked BURBANK.... and, believe or not, because of the Disney Studios, that name meant magic to me!
Well, my wish got fulfilled because I won a free trip there when I was 21.... Too late to meet Walt though!
If he had not smoked those deathly French cigarettes, most of his life!.......
-
The Boult Enigma Variations is my fave as well.
The pic is from the Mark Taper Forum production of Forget-Me-Not-Lane - that's me and Bud Cort. We've just been down trying to have sport with some soldiers, with Bud's character trying to fool them.
I thought he looked familar, but couldn't place him. Of course then there was the same scene with Tom Hulce in the TV version.
Who do you think looked better as a woman: Bud or Tom?
-
Earthquake WEATHER?
The scientists say there's no correlation, but it seems that when a major earthquake hits in these parts, the weather is extremely hot and extremely still. Like it's been here for the past few days.
-
Bud was wonderful in the role - and he looked great as a woman because he believed it. Hulce was still pretty new and while he was more "real" for TV, I didn't think he brought the personality that Bud did to the role. And Bud and I had great chemistry, as did the girl who played scenes with us, Betsy Slade (also in the TV version).
-
I am on my way to the theater to reset the sound levels as best we can. We found a sound person to replace ours, and she'll be here tomorrow and Sunday and will actually try to run the show on Sunday with our fellow sitting beside her. Hopefully it will be a smooth transition. We also have a stage manager sub, who will be there tonight to watch and then tomorrow to call the show, and the Sunday to run it. Hopefully, there will be no more of this stuff before we close, because it's truly tiresome.
-
Great news-hope it goes well on Sunday.
-
The scientists say there's no correlation, but it seems that when a major earthquake hits in these parts, the weather is extremely hot and extremely still. Like it's been here for the past few days.
There you go again, DR Jay! Now spit to ward off the Evil Eye and stop saying those things.

Dear Reader Jose and I went to see a motion picture called Testosterone this afternoon, Dear Readers. No, it is not a documentary about hormones but rather a fictional film that features Mr. David Sutcliffe, Mr. Antonio Sabato, Jr. and, in a supporting role, Miss Sonia Braga. Mr. Sutcliffe and Mr. Sabato are in love (supposedly), but when Sabato does not return after leaving the house to buy a pack of cigarettes, Sutcliffe flies to Bueno Aires to engage in a wild goose chase as he attempts to track him down. Though the film opens fairly lightly, it gets continually darker as it unfolds.
Here is what you need to know about Testosterone:
1. As cute as Mr. Sabato may be, he is not the cutest actor in the film.
2. If you have seen the trailer for Testosterone, you have seen each and every "hot" scene in the film. In its entirety.
3. Buenos Aires is quite beautiful, at least as it's been shot for this film.
4. Miss Braga's role makes Medea look warm and cuddly.
5. Mr. Sutcliffe's agent utters a line near the end of the film that will now become my standard response when I learn that someone is coming to visit.
6. The film concludes with a twist that still has me completely puzzled.

François I wish you could have heard Keith’s reaction when I told him about the Bush animatronics-LOL.
Oh so sweet to read the words to the song. Thank you for the information. I don’t think I shall be going to Florida. We were at Disneyland with friends a couple of years ago but didn’t have time to visit Lincoln.
-
I am off to the thea-tuh. In Boibank. Report later.
-
We were at Disneyland with friends a couple of years ago but didn’t have time to visit Lincoln.
Yes, and he told me that that deeply upset him! :D
Oops... Had forgotten one "that"! >:(

I've been signed in all day and I just realized that I haven't posted my requisite Topic of the Day post:
In my CD player at work: Bloomer Girl, the original Broadway cast recording with Celeste Holm. After that was a bit of the Andrew Lloyd Webber interview on BBC Radio 2 that I recorded off the Internet broadcast.
In my VCR: last night's "The Graham Norton Effect" and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on Comedy Central. Neither of Graham's guests Chris Rock nor Marilyn Manson interest me, so I don't think I'll watch TGNE all the way through. I will watch TDSWJS...unless it's a repeat.
In my DVD player: three DVDs that I just got from Netflix! I joined and my first three movies arrived yesterday. However, I don't remember at all what they are. I just picked some gay-oriented movies that looked interesting ;)...ones that I'd seen on amazon.com or other places, but didn't want to buy and haven't see on the shelves at video/DVD rental places like Blockbuster. I also have queued just about every Cirque du Soleil DVD that they have. I don't know why...just because. ::)

Hello, there, Gang!!
Frantically winterizing my garden, moving rocks around, wrestling with the water system, and I will be ready for the big move back to new York on September 29 - got my flight and everything. Got a great sublet - Lincoln Center, 62nd and Columbus, 800 square feet, 31st floor with a view of Manhattan, a doorman, an elevator, 2 grand pianos, and a partridge in a pear tree. Nice elderly lady from PA owns it, teaches piano there on Wednesday afternoons.
Big GREAT news this morning: I'm back in the BMI Musical Theater Workshop after about 25 years! I'll participate in the Advanced group, audit the 2nd year group and the Librettists group. I'm so stoked!!!
So I'll fly to LA next Thursday to have Rosh Hashanah with the family, back to Seattle Friday, head down to LA in the car with all my stuffaround the 20th, hang with the parents, then whoosh! I'm off the NYC Sept. 29!!! Oh, JOY!!!!!
Happy Birthday to DR Donna. And a big mazel tov to BK on the big move. Lots of luck with your new sound person and SM for Sunday, m'dears.
Hi, JanE!!!
-
That's JANE, of course.
Congrats, Brucele, on your loss...
-
Hope you still read us from time to time, Donna Cabaret!
Happy birthday to you!
-
AND A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DONNA!!
-
Hi Penny. Your sublet sounds nice.
I should see you in NY. I'm still planning to go the second week of October-not that I have made my plans yet.
-
Music, music, music!
What did I play lately?
La Callaway (Liz) singing Loesser!
Tommy Steele in SOME LIKE IT HOT.
Some British Light Music.
Maureen McGovern singing the Bergmans.
And the Rhino soundtracks of Summer Stock and In The Good Old Summertime, with the one and only Garland, as well as the soundtracks to Broadway Melody of 1940 and Rosalie.......
-
BUT.....where's everybody???
-
Wow, Penny. Great news about the sublet! Congrats.
By the time you get here we hope the lovely and charming Mr. Elmore will be up and about or at least up so that a large and fulsome gathering of Kimlets will take over New York. Jane, Penny, Larry, me, Anthony (our proxy) and others who might be in the neighborhood.
-
I'm getting excited. Ben I also haven't forgotten you promised me a CD of your radio interviews when I'm in NY. I'm also looking forward to meeting Anthony and wishing I could also see his doll houses. Larry says the nicest things about both of you.
-
Seems we are about to watch a DVD I didn't mention, BAD SANTA.

I'm getting excited. Ben I also haven't forgotten you promised me a CD of your radio interviews when I'm in NY. I'm also looking forward to meeting Anthony and wishing I could also see his doll houses. Larry says the nicest things about both of you.
Radio reviews NOT interviews! :)

There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
Shinin' at the end of ev'ry day
There's a great big beautiful tomorrow
And tomorrow's just a dream away
Man has a dream and that's the start
He follows his dream with mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true for you and me.

Oh, great! Who taught you how to spit, Jay?
You've sprayed me!

You know, folks, I've worked for that restaurant for almost a year -- it was called The Land Grille Room then -- and that was my worst experience as a Walt Disney World Cast Member!
Hated every moment of it and felt useless!
Because that restaurant rotates, as an employee you end up walking A LOT. Besides, the AC system was then defective and it was so darn hot to work there!
I had Regis Philbin and Disney Legend -- animator -- Marc Davis and his wife as guests once...
Ah.... memories!
http://www.johnswdwpage.com/garden_grill.htm
-
Oh.... and at that time they did not have the Disney Characters at the restaurant; the only character then might have been me!
Could not stand serving breakfast; so much to bring to the table for such small tips!
And we had to change table clothes every time one would "turn" his/hers table!
-
Hello, Tom!
Yes, I'm yakking about my previous life as an "American" alien!
Scary, hey?!

My niece's daughter Juliette is visiting us.

... and she brought you a toy, Tom!
Nice of her! -- soulful eyes!

First days were like this site tonight: NO CUSTOMERS!
Ends of weeks were pretty tough, i tell you!
But then one learns how to swallow one's pride -- favourite expression of one of my female supervisors there! -- when one works for the Mouse!!
Oh.... one of my (French) colleagues was confused by some expression said supervisor used to abuse at meetings before each shift!
He came to me and said: "Why does she keep saying "Festival!"...
She was not saying "festival", but her twang turned "First of all" into that! LOL!
-
Chicken Run and ... hainsies and kimlets.... flew the coup!

DR MattH, I saw the end of Joey (I was expecting the Apprentice). I can tell you how the show ended if you want.
Yes, I'd love to know. When the cable box turned off, Joey had just found out that the cute neighbor he had been flirting with was married and was going to pick her husband up at the airport.
-
Had an eclectic day of TV watching once I got home. A couple of ROCKY AND BULLWINKLE episodes, Basil Rathbone in TERROR BY NIGHT, SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN (dubbed to a DVD-R), and then MEDICAL INVESTIGATION's second episode tonight. Again, a fast paced TV medical mystery melodrama (3 Ms).
-
I should definitely get to POINT BREAK tomorrow, and I got a couple more DVDs in the mail today to add to the stack (but no Hitchcocks yet! Argh!)
-
Great to see you could make it to your party Donna. Hope you have had a great day and that your year will be wonderful for you.
-
I just got back from a semi-social gathering having to do with the WGA. I made my way up Mulholland Dr. - rounding the curves in the dark - having no idea where this place was. Finally, I figured out I must be in the vicinity, so I parked by the side of the road, took out my flashlight and walked along the mountain road until I found the place - which was at the top of a big hill. I thought at any moment David Lynch was going to pop out fron behind a bush and yell "Action!"... So after all this trouble, I arrived, listened to a few conversations and left. I think I lasted 15 minutes. (Oh - I had two rice crackers, some nice grapes and some Camembert. And a bottle of water.)

What a lovely surprise to read all my birthday wishes! Thanks to ALL! In our family, we call this month SEPTEMBER MADNESS. As well as my birthday, there is my parents' wedding anniversary, my older brother's wedding anniversary, my younger brother's birthday, my aunt's birthday, my cousin's wedding anniversary, and just a year ago, we added my niece's son's birthday--1 year old on the 14th!
So sorry to be so errant and truant. I've been busy, Busy, BUSY!!!
Loving wishes to you all.

This afternoon I saw the second half (missed the beginning) of TRIBUTE TO A BAD MAN. Really quite good. Starred James Cagney as a blonde cowboy - directed by Robert Wise. I must look up the screenwriter. Some wonderful dialogue.
-
...Music - Miklos Rozsa; cinematography - Robert Surtees.
Not too shabby. And a really unconventional leading lady in Irene Papas. And Vic Morrow - who could've been playing Brando's long lost twin.

September 27th is also my sister's birthday, her ex-mother-in-law's birthday (they're both named Diane) and a friend's birthday (his name is Jeff)! December is a busy month!! ;)

I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here. I had to stop at Du-Par's and eat because with all this stuff going on and the gym I never had a chance to eat anything. I had a bit of clam chowder, a BLTA, and a dinner salad. My stomach must be shrinking because I filled up so quickly it shocked even me. I'll let you know about tonight's show in the notes, but suffice it to say it was a corker, especially after last night's audience.

The theatre I went to tonight is the Colony Theatre in Burbank and the play I saw is a charming comedy called The Ladies of the Camellias, which was written and directed by Lillian Groag. The play takes place on the eve of Eleanora Duse's Paris debut, in her signature role of Marguerite in "The Lady of the Camellias." Lacking a theatre, Sarah Bernhardt--whose signature role also is Marguerite in "The Lady of the Camellias"--makes hers available to Madama Duse. And thus The Ladies of the Camellias portrays the meeting of the two greatest actresses of their era. Oh yes. An anarchist takes the two ladies and their respective entourages hostage, too.
Although it gets a bit silly here and there, ultimately this play is a passionate love letter to The Theatre. There's plenty of dialogue devoted to discussion of The Theatre's role in civilization and the impact it can have on people. Although not anachronistic per se, numerous lines have been woven into the text that specifically relate to The Theatre (and broader world of the arts) today.
Actors, directors, playwrights and audiences are all the target at one point or another of some good-natured skewering.
The two leading ladies offer performances of note and they receive excellent support from the other seven members of the cast.
This is a play that could have great life in it on stock and community theatre stages.

As always, I appreciate your reviews Jay. The closest some of us ever get to "kulture".
