Well, you've read the notes, the notes waxed nostalgic for Sarno's, and now it is time for you to post until the waxed cows come home.

TOD:

I was going to say that as much as I've always enjoyed Eye-talian meals, no particular place comes to mind ... but something just popped into my head, thanks to having just been on the outskirts of Philadelphia which had me thinking about this only a week ago:

On a cold but nice clear winter day in January of 1986 I was visiting friends in Philly.  A group of us were walking around South Street enjoying the shops, street life, etc., and one of them took us to a nice Eye-talian jernt that evening.  No idea of the name or exact location, but the company was perfect, the large round table we occupied near the back of the room was perfect, everything everybody had was perfect, and for the longest time, the thing I remembered it for was that that meal was my introduction to Eye-talian bread dragged through a to-die-for olive oil.

In L.A. I enjoyed going to Chianti on Melrose a few times -- which is interesting, because I have no memory of how good it might or might not have been, but I loved that it was a nice old traditional jernt.

Seems like there should be more to offer on Eye-talian places and meals.  Maybe something will come to me later.

There has not been one "WOW FACTOR" in any of the Italian restaurants I've been in Florida.

That would have to be for many different restaurants in Montreal which has a large diverse Italian population. Depending on what regional dish you feel like eating you can find a restaurant that caters to it.

Only been to 1 or 2 places in New York's Little Italy, but they were also WOW

I remember going into NYC with our high school choral teacher and a bunch of fellow choir geeks to see the original production of Sweeney Todd (I had already seen it on my own about 3 or 4 times). But before the show, we all went and got a big table at Mama Leone's. Is that even still there any more?

I don't remember anything about the food, but the atmosphere was charming, and I remember feeling exhilarated and quite full of joy that evening.

Nope, been gone for a long, long time. There isn't any restaurant, that I can tell, in the newly renovated Milford Plaza/Row Hotel. The restaurant spaces are still waiting for tenants as far as I can tell.

TOD - Mamma Leone's popped into my mind, too!  I went there twice.  First with Mom on my first visit to NYC in 1967 and, 10 years later, for Thanksgiving Dinner with my friend Becky.  Like DR Singdaw, I don't remember much about the food, but I do remember the atmosphere and that there was a lot of red in the decor.

One day, it rained and the three of us men in the group ended up at the restaurant next door for lunch. I had the most incredible lasagna I'll ever eat in my entire life. Mama Leone's actually had more than one location. IIRC when I moved here they were on 48th Street in the Theatre District (maybe Fred has a better memory of it) but when they opened in 1906 they were on 34th Street. The 48th Street building was sold in 1987. They closed for a time and then moved into the Milford Plaza. They were there until they closed. I can't find a specific closing date but I know it's been closed for a long time. It was a very popular place but, especially at the end, many people said the food was mediocre at best. I remember going in the late 80s when a friend was in town. The portions were large but it was just standard big kitchen Italian food, not very good, not very bad.

I haven't been able to find any interior photos of Mama Leone's on the Internet that depict it as I remember it. It was HUGE - maybe 3 stories tall? With skylights and open atriums and stairways and balconies. Although you were inside, you felt like you were sitting outside on a stone terrazzo, and there were all sorts of nooks and crannies off to the sides.

I called Comcast and it seems that my modem is quite ancient. I plan to have it replaced and I am hoping that, perhaps, it will fix the issues with Netflix and Amazon.com streaming on my tv.

The modem that I will be getting is a modem/router combined, so I will not now need to have two box thingys sitting behind my tv.

I am going to have a Comcast guy come and hook it up, as I am not totally convinced that I will do it correctly.

All of these electronical gadgets....DVRs, DVD players, modems, routers, Smart TVs, cable television....I feel so spoiled and so far away from the days of having to be home at a certain time in order to catch my favorite programs or setting the alarm for 3 am so as to watch the late, late night movie!

Although I have wonderful memories of those long ago days, I am much happier with the new fangled ways!

Boy, I get home and find Elaine Stritch has died. I was lucky to work with her three times, two concerts for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus and a Gay Men's Health Crisis benefit - with her, Lypsinka, Patti Lupone, Lainie Kazan, and Bette Midler - and on each she was a handful. She suffered fools with no patience at all, but if she trusted you, the work was a wonderful time. I liked her a great deal.

DR Matthew! Great to see you back.

RIP Elaine Stritch.

I have to admit that I am not as familiar with her as most DRs here are. Looking at her credits I have seen only one of her films, and that is THE SCARLET HOUR...don't even remember who she played. Of course I likely have seen some of her television work, but I wouldn't be able to pick her out of a line-up.

I mostly just know of her from discussions you all have had about her. I have, no doubt, missed out on some wonderful entertainment.

Seriously, these shoulder things sound awful.  I've been through two experiences of "frozen shoulder" in the past several years.  This, at least the way I've had it, has no particular treatment.  It eventually goes away by itself just as mysteriously as the way it came.  But it restricts your arm movements like crazy, for months, and can be very painful if you're not careful.

My brother had that and eventually it went away.  A friend of mine did PT for it and hers seemed to go away more quickly, however, the PT sounded as painful as mine for the broken shoulder.  At least she didn't have to endure the pain nearly as long as I did, and of course it finally went completely away.

The plumber was due at 8:00 this morning--a most uncivilized hour IMHO. I didn't sleep all that well, which often happens when I know I must wake up early. (The fact that an alarm was set didn't seem to help.) He arrived at 8:10 and he and his helper spent the next two hours snaking my drain and installing a new garbage disposal. Shortly after they left I attempted to resume cleaning out the refrigerator, the project I'd just begun last Sunday when the garbage disposal died and the sink clogged. Guess what? It backed up again.

I phoned the plumber, who arrived about an hour later. By this time the sink had drained.  He insisted that I'd done something wrong--he ALWAYS blames these things on me--and that the new disposal was working properly. We tested it a few times. It doesn't sound right to me, doesn't make the usual grind and whir sounds, but it didn't back up. He told me that I'm supposed to be putting kitchen waste in the regular trash. WHAT??!! Why does one have a garbage disposal then?  I'm not convinced that all is well, but since the management here will believe him over me, I'll try to live with it. I don't use the disposal a lot and never put anything iffy into it, anyway.

I know of a California B&B that has had to close because their well has run dry. It is truly a serious situation. I question whether everyone is taking it seriously, though.

I think that California will need to consider using gray water--water that's been used for washing clothes or dishes--for some applications. It will require replumbing, though, which is expensive. Instead of developing yet another generation of cell phones I'd like to see more R&D go into these sorts of projects.

Stritch stories are in Album Produced by.  But I loved the first time I spoke to her on the phone about her doing Drat! The Cat!.  She asked what the money was and I told her we paid scale, per song - she had one song in the show.  She asked what scale was and when I told her she did that famous Stritch growl and said, Oh, I can't leave my apartment for less than five hundred bucks."  I told her that we'd pay her that and get her a car to get her to the studio.  She was fine and happy after that.

My neighbor's story was that his wife said "Get rid of the computer chair" and he put the wrong one outside.

He is home, but he has yet to bring my computer chair with arms back across the street.

Whatever his reasons, or his odd way of asking for the chair, I think you did the right thing to return it.

TOD:

I went to Italy with friends a few years ago who wanted to share a place that had a full kitchen so we could go to the market, but fresh foods and cook them ourselves. One day, it rained and the three of us men in the group ended up at the restaurant next door for lunch. I had the most incredible lasagna I'll ever eat in my entire life. It was seven layers of pasta with fresh slivers of sauteed porcini mushrooms between each layer and the whole thing was no great than 3/4 of an inch thick. Smothered in butter. Beautiful.

I was ready to abandon cooking right then and there and just eat that food for the rest of the trip. We only got back there two more times, but the food on each visit was as close to Italian perfection as I shall likely ever taste.

Where in Italy and what is the name of the restaurant?

I'd love to know this, as well.

The 'Harvey Wallbanger' (a cocktail made with vodka, Galliano, and orange juice) was purportedly named for a Manhattan Beach surfer who was a regular patron of Duke's 'Blackwatch' Bar on Sunset Boulevard during the 1950's.

Alfredo's of Rome had a restaurant in Philadelphia and, as one would expect, had the best fettuccine Alfredo.

Almost everywhere we ate in Italy, except in Venice, had incredible food.  The best pizza was a four cheese pizza in Pisa.

I'm sorry I don't remember and have not been able to find the name of the restaurant in Florence that provided, even for Italy, an exceptional meal.  The highlight was their Ribollita soup.  If you ever go to Tuscany be sure to find and order this soup.

Thursday morning greetings!  SW Ohio is having some glorious Michigan-like summer weather - cool nights, low humidity.

I literally choked while reading this.  Low humidity is not how I remember Michigan summers.

Compared to southern Ohio, the humidity in Michigan (or northern Ohio, for that matter) is quite low.

It's all relative, DR Jane!

Long-lost Dan M is here.  Thank you to all who sent good wishes and positive vibes, especially Vixmom.  I've been battling depression and on top of that I had some computer problems.  Everything has been going wrong for me, and since I am a "glass half empty" type of person, my natural inclination was to get very panicky about everything.

I can walk, but it's way too hot for me.  Ever since the chemo, I've taken on a sensitivity to "too cold" or "too hot".  I'm also dealing with a protruding abdominal hernia which is kind of having a pregnancy.  I feel awful some days because I feel "fat" and many clothes no longer fit.  I'm barely getting by financially, so new clothes are not in my current budget.  I would love to have the hernia repaired, but I'm still unable to get any help for insurance payments.  Everything is just so expensive now for me.  After all bills, rent and groceries are paid in a given month, I have just around $100 (sometimes more, sometimes less) in discretionary funds, which doesn't leave too much discretionary fun unfortunately.

Yes, I have a friend, but she's getting early senility or something, so I don't like to bother her that much.  While it's no substitute for shopping in an actual supermarket, I have been using the Safeway grocery delivery service lately.  For the most part they do a decent job, except last week all of my spaghetti sauce jars broke and nearly half of my grocery order was covered.  The other half was sticky from a soda can that apparently popped.  I did get a refund on some items.  Safeway is very good about that sort of thing, I must say (to borrow Ed Grimley's favorite expression).

Why I wound up on that site is interesting.  A friend of mine sent me a bootleg of the 40th anniversary of WPIX (Channel 11 in NYC) which mentioned Eddie Lawrence, the "Old Philosopher", who I totally forgot about.

I read some online entries about him, and found out he co-wrote a show called "Kelly" with Moose Charlap, and which yielded a song that Mr. Sondheim wishes he had written.

I looked up "Kelly" and found CastAlbums.org to be a good reference.

Elaine Stritch has passed away - eighty-nine years can only be celebrated.  Certainly I had a good time when I worked with her.

I just read that when I got back to work from our field trip to Vancouver and was checking my e-mail.

I wonder if she knew that she was dying and that's why she "retired" and moved back to Michigan.

I agree.  I know that it's not the proper way to see movies, but I received an excellent bootleg copy.  It's great to see F. Murray Abraham, one of my favorite character actors.  A funny coincidence for me was that the same day I saw the movie, I had watched an episode of "All in the Family" which featured F. Murray Abraham as an unemployment counselor who has to deal with Archie.

I remember going to Mama Leone's once.

Food was not memorable

But the over done service was.

This was the route to being seat at the table.

The doorman opened the door.
A person directed me to the coat check
Checked my coat.
Someone pointed to a person
That person asked me how many people in my party. (I believe there were three of us)
Another person took us through the first room.
We stop before the second.
Another person asked how many. We told them
Another person took us to the table
Another person gave us the menus.
Another person filled our water glass
Another person asked us if we were ready to order (Yes we were)
Our waiter took our order. (The last time we saw him/her)
The food came served by someone else.
The check was given by another person.

And I'm not even sure we left through the door we came in.

And I don't think I'm  exaggerating on the service.

Went to the movies tonight. Saw "Snowpiercer," which was a sci-fi/adventure/action/thriller and it was largely fun, thanks to an over-the-top performance from Tilda Swinton, who looked like she was having the time of her life.

The script is largely predictable and I still didn't mind that too much.

I've now been to the movies three times recently, first time in more than a year. I find it odd that two of the three had Tilda Swinton and John Hurt in them. The other was "Only Lovers Left Alive," in which Hurt played Marlowe as a vampire.

At my apartment complex, the tenants have to sign a form stating that they understand what they can and can't put into their garbage disposal.  Basically, water is really pushing it.

Re garbage disposals: My neighbor plumber told me to only put down the things that will easily grind up down the disposal. Like the stuff that is in the strainer when you rinse out the sink. Everything else should be put in the trash.

Or in my case, in the composting worm bin.

DR Dan can you get out for walks?  Do you have a friend who takes you to the market or for essentials?

Yes, I have a friend, but she's getting early senility or something, so I don't like to bother her that much.  While it's no substitute for shopping in an actual supermarket, I have been using the Safeway grocery delivery service lately.  For the most part they do a decent job, except last week all of my spaghetti sauce jars broke and nearly half of my grocery order was covered.  The other half was sticky from a soda can that apparently popped.  I did get a refund on some items.  Safeway is very good about that sort of thing, I must say (to borrow Ed Grimley's favorite expression).

I am glad to know that you have Safeway.  I went an entire year not being able to drive.  My friends quickly got tired of going to the store for me.  I would not have survived without Safeway.

Tonight's "Tempest" went off without a hitch.  My sound cues were flawless...if I do say so myself...and I do. ;)

The actors were all on and the audience seemed to enjoy it.  A few friends of mine were there tonight...but not for me (an Ira Gershwin reference).  But I chatted with them all and that was fun.

Today (Thursday, actually...since I'm still up) was our director's birthday.  Someone bought a cake and we all sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

Not very well (on purpose), but humorously and with affection.

Topic of the Day:  my overall most favorite Italian food is lasagna, but no one restaurant experience specially sticks out in my mind.  When I make it, I usually just use the recipe on either the noodle box or the ricotta cheese and double everything except the noodles. ;D
