Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Mr. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and now it is time for you to post until the Philadelphia cows come home.

You can get a new copy of that Entremont box set on Amazon (that bk mentioned in today's notes) for only $33, if you're willing to wait for it to be shipped from the UK.

Good morning, all.

What happened to that last hour of sleep I'd intended to get?

Well, not a big deal.  But I was in an incredibly intense dream that I wouldn't have minded seeing seeing through.  It was one of those solid ones that's pretty easy to remember a lot of detail from, right off the bat.  What bizarre things I come up with.  It involved people and events from 25 years ago, loosely based on real memories and events, and a couple of the people have been dead since.  Nothing scary or sad or particularly unpleasant in any way, but in the cold light of day I marvel that it stayed pleasant and interesting.  Bottom line, though, it's just bizarre, the stuff you come up with, and believe it's real.

Coffee!

I have a brother who REALLY needs to learn the difference.  :)   He's gotten so convinced that something is real that he's confronted people on them, and it can take some doing to convince him that what he says - never really happened

I really don't think there are any performers of the younger ilk could even come close to their abilities.

Very much enjoyed the notes on Ormandy.

Since my parents had joined the Columbia Record Club, a number of our classical albums were Ormandy, too.  (That would change a little, for me, as I gravitated toward Bernstein with the emergence of West Side Story and the Symphonic Dances album, and later the Mahler symphonies.)  I don't remember many specific albums, but Ormandy's Grand Canyon Suite comes to mind.  If you want to laugh, at that time I was judging Grand Canyon Suite recordings by how I liked the obligatory cover photograph, and Ormandy's is burned into my memory.

We probably had an Entremont recording or two, but I think our Columbia expenditures leaned more heavily toward Broadway cast albums and my dad's Mitch Miller albums.  At some point in my high school years I started my own membership in the RCA club, probably more for the additional cast albums than anything.

I've said previously that Ormandy's "Carmina Burana" holds a special place in the heart, and I still have it on a pristine original LP and on reel-to-reel tape.

I must say though that I saw several extraordinary, remarkable performing (and also creative) talents in my school days, whose innate abilities could rival the people who are making it, but they just couldn't be bothered with what someone has to go through to build a career in modern show business, and chose a more financially secure life in the business world.  It makes me think the talent is there, but the business has changed.

So many had the studios behind them. Even in the early days of television Warner Brothers, Universal, Fox had their stable of talent. There were only three networks ABC, CBS, NBC who believed in performers. They would get TV shows and even if they were not success they would give them 13 weeks or even a full season of shows. Remember when a first run season consisted of 39 first episodes and ran about 26 minutes with opening closing titles?

No we are lucky if a sitcom is 20 minutes long and the opening/closing credits are basically a thing of the past.

"If you ever wondered what's wrong with people who jump right out of bed in the morning, well, a new study shows you might just be onto something: early risers may be less honest as the day goes on.

Good morning, all! I did not find an alarm i liked yesterday so I ordered one from Amazon. The one I have did not ring this morning, and that really bothers me. Still, I am up and soon to head down to Toyland.

I think that Ormandy recording of Carmina Burana may have been one of the firsts, if not the first.  He was a wonderful conductor, but I think he, like Reiner, Monteux, Fiedler, Ansermet, and others, may be looked down and perhaps forgotten as well, by trendy au courant critics whose memories are shunted aside by all that knowledge they claim to carry.  I like the work of all these gentlemen.

I did find Ormandy's recording of "The Moldau" on CD, BK:

Yes!  There is a world of wealth to behold in all of their recordings.

Could the Stokowski recording of the Orff have been earlier?  (I didn't discover that one myself till years later.)

I want to buy a small white table now....since the brown one doesn't match.

elmore, that Moldau is a stereo recording done for RCA years after the one I grew up with, which was on Columbia - being mono, I don't think it will ever get a release.

And yes, that first box you pictured is the Columbia set - the other box is RCA - not sure if he recorded Carmina Burana for both labels, but if so I would seek out the Columbia first.

I'm finally crawling out from under a bout f bad food and feeling much perkier.  :)

BK, having been born and raised in Philly, Maestro Ormandy is who I grew up with as well, and he and the Philadelphia Orchestra were my go-to musicians for anything classical. Lucky me.

And I enjoyed Red very much. Great fun! Red 2 is as well, though I found it more action oriented. Great casts having lots of fun together.

All in all, I'd rather be at the Metropolitan Room...

That goes without saying :)

And I am home from my excursions to Toyland and the Metropolitan Room.  I accomplished much at Toyland before DR ChasSmith arrived. Then we visited a bit, dished all the DRs, and looked at all the McGlinnventory before heading over to West 22nd Street. There, we met the wonderful DR vixmom, the vixter, and Charles Maurer, who seems a nice young swain for the vixter.

The show was quite wonderful. Sandy sounded spectacular, and the band - which was larger than I expected: piano, guitar, bass, and drums - played really well. There were many stunning moments, but my favorites were "The Wrong Side of the Tracks," "Make the Man Love Me," and "Why Can't I Forget."

BK, your song "Simply" was really a highlight.

Back!  This turned out to be one of those great days driving into and out of the city, with nary a problem or an irritation anywhere.

It was great to visit Toyland, Sandy's show was wonderful, and so was the HHW company.  We really should do things more often.

Thanks for the reminder, DR Elmore, because I forgot to mention earlier that I really loved "The Other Side of the Tracks", too.  And I found "Goodnight, My Someone" exceptionally nice.  Everything worked together and flowed beautifully.

Photographic evidence to come.

I bought a new rocking chair for my front porch at the Marsh Grocery Store.  The manager sold me the one that he had put together - which was very nice of him to do.

I want to buy a small white table now....since the brown one doesn't match.

A white table would look nice with your new chair.  If I have to assemble something I am likely not going to buy it.

I love this chair   I wish we had a front porch

Great photographs.  Sandy called after the show and was mostly pleased with how it went.  She wasn't happy with the bass player - not something people probably noticed or heard, but Sandy's used to working with the best and this bass player was apparently not up to the task and played a few things oddly - thankfully I've taught Sandy to be strong enough not to be thrown by such things.

Glad to hear you all enjoyed it - it was a fun show to put together.

elmore, that Moldau is a stereo recording done for RCA years after the one I grew up with, which was on Columbia - being mono, I don't think it will ever get a release.

And yes, that first box you pictured is the Columbia set - the other box is RCA - not sure if he recorded Carmina Burana for both labels, but if so I would seek out the Columbia first.

I loved this subject today, btw.

I do wonder if some of those classical mono recordings will show up.  I don't mean the unique ones for which no stereo counterpart exists, but the ones like this for pieces that were eventually rerecorded in stereo.  There are such mono versions of performances on all the major classical labels that a lot of people continued to like more than the later versions for one reason or another.

Oh, and I love the idea of CD sets utilizing original cover art.  Absolutely love it.  Just like I do when movies are released with at least a nod to the original poster art.  It makes such a difference in one's enjoyment of just handling the damned things.

I'm going to do a quick browse of ye olde record collection in a bit to see what there might be of Ormandy's that's interesting.

Listening to the Rachmaninov first piano concerto with Ormandy and Entremont - going from the second piano concerto with Bernstein and the NY Phil, the sound difference is instantly apparent with Philadelphia hugely better.  I'm very fond of the first piano concerto and then it's on to the fourth.

I have this recording of the Grand Canyon Suite (http://www.discogs.com/Arturo-Toscanini-And-NBC-Symphony-Orchestra-Grofe-Grand-Canyon-Cafe/release/4091043), conducted by Arturo Toscanini:

It's a set of four, red vinyl 7-inch records with metal (not plastic) record adapters.  I've never listened to them (although I've heard another recording of the music), but someone put a live recording from 1943 on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoI-xif_vmw).

George, I'm glad you're getting good houses for the Tempest. How much longer does the show run.

BTW, I love the idea of partying until 7:30 a.m. That's so far in my past. But I have some wonderful dim memories.

I just finished "The Grand Budapest Hotel."  I loved it!  The look, the style, the acting styles, etc....it was all delightfully delightful. :)
