Title: WHEN THE SEQUEL ISN'T EQUAL
Post by: bk on July 22, 2014, 12:22:59 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both a sequel and equal, and now it is time for you to post until the equal cows come home.

Sequels...the first one that comes to mind is "Star Trek II."  I think that it was very good (but I must admit that I really do like "Star Trek: The Motion Picture").

Well, I need to get to sleep now.  I'll have to finish "Falling Skies" later.  Tonight is the Joan Baez concert and I want to be rested!

Good night, all!

Yesterday I got busy attacking my still-way-too-large record collection for the first time since installing the new cartridge recently (and oh my, that rejuvenated system is a thing to behold).  I sampled the Honegger "Jeanne d'Arc" by Ormandy.  The discs are mint, and the music sounds lovely.  It will get a complete listen-through sometime soon.

Then I went through some Bartok "Miraculous Mandarin" recordings, one of the pieces for which I had duplicates and completely unnecessary copies that needed to be weeded out.  That's been one of my favorite pieces ever since its piano part afforded my first ever participation in a real orchestra.  Years later I kept picking up various copies at used record sales, and last night, in an effort to attack the bloat, I cleaned and sampled and shedded the dupes.  Rehearing some of these was great fun.  Mr. Ormandy was present (I'd forgotten about this one) and he comports himself well, even if Messrs. Dorati and Solti come closer in pacing and intensity to the way I first got to know that ol' Mandarin.

Thanks, DR TCB.  Sheridan Whiteside is the role I auditioned for, but I also read for Banjo.....who would be a lot of fun to play.  And he doesn't come on until the last couple of scenes...so that would be nice as well.

I should hear from the director sometime today.  There was certainly someone else there Sunday who could play Sheridan, and I don't know who was there last night.  So we shall see.

TOD:

Most sequels are sub-par, but there are exceptions:

THE GODFATHER II

THE FRENCH CONNECTION II

BACK TO THE FUTURE II & III

(With the exception of Ms. Coppola, I also like GODFATHER III, though it's certainly not as good as the first two.)

Are there others?

Back in the 1970s, I wrote a book about sequels (ONE GOOD FILM DESERVES ANOTHER) that is currently pretty dated and OOP.  I think that the sequel phenomenon has become much more prolific since then...and probably not for the better.

Yesterday was not a good day for me. First thing when I woke up, I discovered that my laptop fell to the floor and the screen now looks like you're looking through a shattered window at night. I now have to buy a new laptop because to fix it would cost more than buying a new one. At work my right leg started to bother me so I started to favor my left leg. I must have done something because my left was ( and still is) killing me. I went home and change for my physiotherapy. It was then I noticed that my right leg had swollen up to three times its normal size. The therapist wanted me to go see a doctor as soon as I was finished. I went to the Workmen's Comp. place and they sent me to the emergency room of a local hospital. I got an ultrasound to see if there was a blood clot. Luckily there is not. But I have to stay home and keep my legs elevated. I however have to walk the dog. And I need to use a cane because my left leg is still in such pain. I am doing this posting from my iPhone because I don't have a computer. :-( If I can walk a little I will buy a new laptop this afternoon.

Good morning, all! I slept late, and when I woke at 9:30, I was in some ridiculous dream with the Tchaikovsky/Disney song "Once Upon A Dream" running through my head.

My plans for the day are very few: laundry now, because the afternoon may be spent working on notes for the ROBERTA recording. The booklet situation is currently a mess; I cannot get into all of the sudden and unexpected printing issues of the past three weeks, but I know that New World Records would like to resolve the mess quickly.  As would I.

That's my day.

Tuesday morning greetings!  I just cleaned out a cupboard in the breakfast room for Mary Linda to use and accumulated an entire box of audiocassettes for next year's AAUW book sale.  She went back to work today after her 4-day moving weekend.  Rob came home from work while Richard and I were finishing breakfast and he's zonked out now.  He goes in again tonight at midnight and then is off until 8am Saturday.

Went to see DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES this weekend...loved every minute of it! Quite a good film.

The moral of the story, however, which has been the center of countless war films, westerns, science fiction films, etc., is something that man-kind still cannot seem to grasp. Sadly.

I'm with y'all on these sequels:

The Godfather II and III
French Connection II
Aliens (I can enjoy the last two films, too, though good sequels, let alone great movies, they are not)
Back to the Future II and III

I know there are others, but they aren't coming to mind.  Certainly there are worthy ones from the Universal and Hammer horror days, and from a few other "franchises" of various stripes.

In general, though, nowadays, the word "sequel" carries about as bad a connotation as "remake".

~~~Super Vibes of All Kinds for Mike!!~~~
I'm with y'all on these sequels:
The Godfather II and III
French Connection II
Aliens (I can enjoy the last two films, too, though good sequels, let alone great movies, they are not)
Back to the Future II and III
I know there are others, but they aren't coming to mind.  Certainly there are worthy ones from the Universal and Hammer horror days, and from a few other "franchises" of various stripes.
In general, though, nowadays, the word "sequel" carries about as bad a connotation as "remake".
I also liked the ALIEN sequels.
Very busy morning.  But had breakfast with the helper - sausage and eggs and toast but only one piece of toast and no potatoes, then we did our Costco run.  Picked up two packages and then I finally had to call the Apple Care and get them to do something about the horrendous behavior of the Mac Mail program.  I couldn't even get it to launch and it was giving me all kinds of weird messages - I restarted the computer but it's been erratic for a year now and I can't deal with it anymore.  I got an expert on the phone and did the thing where he can see my computer screen - he saw that Mail was trying to bring in 56,000 e-mails and when I told him it did that five or six times a DAY, he said something was definitely wrong.  So he had me remove three folders from the mail folder and he had me rebuild everything and he said that other than bringing everything in one time, it should now know that mail is already there and doesn't need to be re brought in every time.  Hopefully that will work.  I'll probably know by this evening and I've got this guy's personal contact.  And now to jog.  Oh, and we had a little drama (not me personally) with one of the And the World Goes Round actresses - this person was the one person who came with the package - when I agreed to do the album I didn't want anyone from the production they'd just done but they insisted this girl was part of it and I thought she'd be okay and said yes.  And she is okay.  But she's now behaving poorly with the musical director, which is not smart as this would not have happened without he and his parents.  People need to understand when they are given a gift.  But, alas.
Just heard from my folks. It seems that while Dad was driving Mom to her volunteer work, another car ran a red light and crashed into them. They're both OK, if still a little shaken up by what happened. But the car had to be hauled off. I don't know if it's totaled or not.
Word has spread quickly, and it seems as if a great many people from church have volunteered to take them to the grocery, etc. Plus, one of my sisters is due to drive in Friday for a week-long visit.
The Canadian Open Golf tournament is happening this week.  The place is at least 15-20 minutes from me. But for some reason they have decided that the huge lawn beside the bike path I use should be the parking lot. People are being bused to the tournament.  It is bizarre to me. I could see if the place was 5 minutes away. i guess there are no other parking lots or grass closer??
DR Elmore, he worked 4 midnights in a row the week between Lauren's wedding and the move and said that was a bit much.  He and Mary Linda didn't see much of each other that week.
When Keith was in school and worked nights often we would only see each other sleeping, or grunting a hello.  In retrospect those days were much easier than the long stretches he would travel for work.
Well, I must be off.  I need to get to the theater to usher for the Joan Baez concert, which I can only assume will actually happen.  Looking at her Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/OfficialJoanBaez), she had to cancel the last three, count 'em, THREE concerts!  The latest was on Sunday in Bellingham, Washington.  I haven't heard that tonight's concert has been cancelled, so I can only assume that the time off was what she needed...hopefully.
Be back later!
Thanks, DR TCB.  Sheridan Whiteside is the role I auditioned for, but I also read for Banjo.....who would be a lot of fun to play.  And he doesn't come on until the last couple of scenes...so that would be nice as well.
I should hear from the director sometime today.  There was certainly someone else there Sunday who could play Sheridan, and I don't know who was there last night.  So we shall see.
Is the director someone who knows your work?  If so, there should be no question.  But, as you mentioned, the role has a heck of a line load.
Yesterday was not a good day for me. First thing when I woke up, I discovered that my laptop fell to the floor and the screen now looks like you're looking through a shattered window at night. I now have to buy a new laptop because to fix it would cost more than buying a new one. At work my right leg started to bother me so I started to favor my left leg. I must have done something because my left was ( and still is) killing me. I went home and change for my physiotherapy. It was then I noticed that my right leg had swollen up to three times its normal size. The therapist wanted me to go see a doctor as soon as I was finished. I went to the Workmen's Comp. place and they sent me to the emergency room of a local hospital. I got an ultrasound to see if there was a blood clot. Luckily there is not. But I have to stay home and keep my legs elevated. I however have to walk the dog. And I need to use a cane because my left leg is still in such pain. I am doing this posting from my iPhone because I don't have a computer. :-( If I can walk a little I will buy a new laptop this afternoon.
Healing vibes to DR Mike!
Afterward, I began to watch the first PLANET OF THE APES film on Amazon.com streaming. Got through 15 minutes of it when it would no longer load. I must remember to get Comcast to replace my modem, and soon!
SPOILER ALERT!
Back from a good meeting and two slices of Dino's great pizza (I was a good boy and didn't do three) plus a small piece of cherry pie that was given to me today as a gift - I brought it to the meeting so I wouldn't be tempted to eat it all tonight.
DR John your parent's have a wonderful group of friends.
VIBES THEY DON'T SUFFER DELAYED SYMPTOMS!
Yeah, I'm worried about that. I told Mom that whiplash can take a few days before it becomes apparent. But she doesn't want to hear that, and, well, I don't blame her.
Good health vibes to DR John's parents!!
If that were me being a good boy, it would mean I didn't do eight.
Thank you, all, for the vibes and wishes. I'll report back after I talk with them tomorrow. Don't know the status of the car, but it was about 15-20 years old, yet didn't have many miles on it and was in great condition. That said, if it's totaled, the book value will be nil. I don't think they'd ever thought they'd have to get a new car again.
I hope you not only see the concert but that she doesn't disappoint.
Well, the concert went on without a hitch (as far as I could tell) and Joan didn't disappoint.  When we volunteers got there, we were told that her show would be about an hour and 45 minutes, but she ended up only singing for about an hour and 15 minutes without a break.  Given that she had to cancel three concerts very recently, that makes sense.
Anyway, you could hear a little raspiness in her voice, but she still sounded pretty good.  She had three other people accompanying her (I didn't get a copy of the program, so I don't remember their names), but one guy played guitar, mandolin, banjo and a couple of other assorted guitar-like instruments.  The other guy was her percussionist (he didn't play a drum kit, he mainly played several cymbals and the wooden crate/box that he was sitting on).  The third person was her assistant.  I think her name was Grace.  She just sang back-up on several of Joan's songs and has a lovely voice.
Joan also had a couple of guests who work at Teatro ZinZanni (http://zinzanni.com/seattle/) in Seattle...an accordion player and another guy who did a little balloon magic.  It was a wonderful concert and the audience (completely filled...almost 1000 seats!) LOVED it.  There were a couple of standing ovations during the show.  Definitely not a disappointment. :D
