Title: AUNTIE MEME
Post by: bk on July 28, 2014, 12:10:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a meme, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently "sharing" some MOOms.

I thought that memes were the pictures with the funny captions, such as this:

Of course, since the meme has been appropriated by Facebook and since there are many people for whom Facebook is the way the stroke their ego, perhaps we should break down meme into ME ME.

I am listening to Shostakovich Symphony 1 with Ormandy conducting - not sure I've ever heard it before.  I do have an entire box of the Shostokovich symphonies, all the Columbia recordings, so maybe it's time to pop that box open.

I also have an unopened box of all the Columbia Stravinsky conducts Stravinsky albums.

Good morning, all!  I now know the downside of sleeping for 14 hours: the next night you cannot get to sleep! As a result, I was wide awake at 4:15 this morning and thinking, damn.

So, I'm not going to Toyland this morning. I am a walking zombie, although i suppose that's redundant. I'm going to clean off my work table, perhaps finish the Moross score i've avoided for two months and tidy up the place. I still have more ladder and book shelf work to accomplish. Where is my former super's grandson when i need his help again?

I don't even know what a meme is!

What I love (yeah, sure!) is the vanity is exposes, especially among some of my actor acquaintances. Some of them cannot pass gas without documenting it with a post or by changing their profile photo. One former FANTASTiCKS actor posts a photo of something insignificant involving himself every 30 seconds or so. It must be exhausting whipping out that camera constantly.

I hate all of the things about Facebook mentioned in the notes....I try not to do any of those things.  There are videos I share, now and then.

My least favorite thing is my friends who do nothing but post pictures of themselves in the most mundane situations....I don't mean now and then....I mean ALWAYS....  I also hate the posts of some people that are always NEGATIVE....posts that ask for prayers EVERY DAY for some personal crisis or another.....  I like FaceBook because it is a great means of communication - but the medium has become the message.....as they used to say.  Or like DR ELMORE wrote....just above me.

I do like Throw Back Thursdays.

TOD:  What I hate most on facebook is my newsfeed getting cluttered with other people's posts who are not friends just because some fb friend of mine commented on it or some friend of mine was tagged in a picture by someone I don't know.  I got\ to the delete post  and hit the option that says "hide all by so and so"  that way I've at least eliminated some stranger whose crap will no longer appear on my newsfeed just because they're connected with someone I'm actually fb friends with.

TOD:  It's fairly easy to scroll through crap you don't want to see on your newsfeed, but it is so time-consuming.  I also hate all the little syrupy homilies and banal platitudes people post.  If you have a thought, try to make your own or at least post something at least vaguely witty, interesting, or semi-profound.

DR Elmore, you would not recognize the MUM library now.  They've done a great job transitioning it to a 21st century learning center, but it sure looks different without so many books and other print materials.

Listening to Ormandy's rather breathtakingly beautiful reading of Respighi's Pines of Rome - that disc also includes Fountains of Rome and Roman Festivals - according to the original jacket it was, at the time of release, the first LP to include all three pieces on one LP.

Just in the last 2 days I saw the return of another incredibly annoying and ongoing meme - the one that begins, "No one reads my page, so this is a test...". It's the 'Poor me, no one is paying attention to me' meme. Oy to the OYth power!

I stop reading right there. I won't comment on their meme post, as that would only get me more annoyed when I get notices that others have as well. What I want to say is, "No one reads your page because you post this kind of thing too often. And now that I see this, I won't be reading your page... ever again."  ;)

What gets me is that otherwise (or, rather, "seemingly") sane people post something that says they need to whittle down their list of friends, so post one word telling where you met this individual and then "share" it to your list where, ostensibly, the original poster will find it?  Otherwise, you'll be deleted from their list of friends.

PLEASE!  It's the same thing as a chain letter.

I don't play that kind of game.  If my posts are offensive, delete me.  If my posts are boring you, block me.  Do anything but require me to play some ridiculous game.

This is some great listening everyone's doing.

One of the Ormandy LPs I rediscovered and listened to the other day was the Shostakovich 4th, and I loved it.  I daresay I immediately liked it more than the ubiquitous 5th, and I can't even estimate how many times I listened to my first copy of the Bernstein LP of that one.  That was truly a "thing" in its day.

DR George, there are a couple of great "Ring" DVDs to seek out when you're of a mind to:  "The Golden Ring: The Making of Solit's Ring" is to die for, for those of us who remember what an event that recording was in its day, and for a glimpse into a "golden age" of recording history.  The other is "Sing Faster: The Stagehands' Ring Cycle".

A woman's post from Facebook is what prompted today's notes.  She shared something she could have Googled to see that it was fake - something about microchips being implanted for Obamacare - now, forget how stupid you'd actually have to be to believe that crap, she posted it and two stupid people responded.  So, I went in and told them it was fake and included the Snopes link.  This woman, who happens to share my last name, removed my post and posted herself "appears to be Snopes."  I immediately deleted her from my "friends" list.  I really do think I will stop accepting friends as a matter of course.  This woman, for example, does nothing but post all day and evening long stuff she "shares" - showing her politically correct outrage at all manner of things both real and mostly false.  Buh bye.

I have to take a written test to get my MN driver's license. In all the other states I've moved to, they simply granted you the new license based on the valid license from your previous state.

I should have done this months ago. But, today, I crammed the online manual and then went downtown to the DMV.

TOD:  What I hate most on facebook is my newsfeed getting cluttered with other people's posts who are not friends just because some fb friend of mine commented on it

This is my biggest complain with fb.  I have my account set to "friends only" and hope that every time I "like" or comment every fb friend cannot read it.  When I first joined fb I could only see when mutual friends commented, not people I didn't know.

And I'm sorry, DR John G, but I do not understand this Facebook mania to post photos of your last meal if you are not doing a shoot for a food magazine or auditioning for a wrung in haute cuisine.

I don't either, honestly, and wrote a column touching somewhat on the subject this week.

I am one to request a different table if there seems to be one I would prefer elsewhere.  You can usually tell before you sit down.  I don't ask after I have sat down unless there is a good reason, like a cold draft on my neck or the table location is too noisy.

Well Edith quit today.  I'm not sure what set her off, but she got all upset and walked out.  I think she's trying to do too much, new full time job, part time with me, taking online classes, daughter going to college and sister in law in hospice.  I told her to call if she want to come back.  She didn't leave her key, so I'm guessing she might be there tomorrow.  I did change the passwords on the computers.  I don't think she'd ever do anything crazy, but I have to protect the data.

So, I'm looking for part time help.  Luckily, we didn't have anything scheduled this week other than a couple appointments, so I'll have the week to regroup and try to figure out how I'm going to all this work myself.  I'll figure something out.  I'm planning to get the new job, but if I don't I'll look for new full time help then.  I'm amazingly not surprised and really not upset. I didn't see any way she could do everything

I truly think she's just overwhelmed as am I at the moment.   I came back to the office and backed up her hard drive, as it's our server.  In no way do I think she'd do anything to the files etc, but I can't be too careful.  I've begun the process of putting out the word I'm looking for a part time receptionist/interpreter.  We'll see what comes up.
Even if she calls tomorrow and wants to come back, I don't think I want her to stay beyond this week.  She is making mistakes and is distracted and I understand, but I also can't have that in the office.  We'll see what tomorrow brings.

They said on the news the other night that some young people are taking up to 35 selfies a day

Just spent a couple hours at the office.  I had to put together a strategy of what I'm going to do next.  I have a strategy of going through every file in the open file-file cabinets, organizing, making notes on each one, prioritizing and getting to work. I can have all that done by the end of the week with no problem.

But the longer I was there the angrier I got.  Seriously, I gave her a best case scenario for me of 4 months notice with the possibility of unemployment after that because the business would be closed. With one month before the first cut and two months before the second cut with the possibility I won't get the job.  She finds a job in one day, gives me two weeks notice of full to part time with the promise of staying part time until I close, asks for a recommendation to take to her new jobs and for the future, works one week and walks out on me.   I have way too much going on for this drama.

On Friday, Theater Artists Olympia is going to have a movie night, and we're going to serve waffles!  The last time we had a movie night (coincidentally, it was also the very first time that we had a movie night), we just projected the movie and had candy and popcorn for people to purchase.  This time, we're actually going to make waffles and if people want, they can wear their pajamas while watching the movie!  How fun will that be?

(Of course, it won't be clothing optional for those who don't wear pajamas at all. ::) )

Anyway, I bought a waffle iron for the event and I need to figure out how make waffles on my new waffle iron.  I got it on sale at Macy's and it's the kind that flips over.  I don't know what's so special about that kind, but someone told me that it's supposed to be better than the kinds that don't flip over.  I'm now going to Fred Meyer to get some waffle ingredients to make the test waffles, so we'll see how well it makes waffles and how easily I can use the waffle maker.

It's certainly the best of the films I've seen now from last year. Silly that it wasn't nominated the way that, say, American Hustle was.

I bought that one as well  it does seem to cook faster and release the waffles better than the one that have that I don't flip

I have no idea why though

That's good to know.  Thanks for the info, Vixmom.

From DR Miller:
Quote
We have a woman at my church who was 90 and her mother was still alive.

That proves Keith's response we he said the mother could still be alive.

So, what happened to dad?  No mention of him, living or dead.

Well, it's time for me to leave work and go to Fred Meyer.

Be back later!

I had to convince the local market to let me in just as they were closing.  I was totally out of deodorant. I told them there are many people who would thank them tomorrow

Back from seeing Brennley Brown at this open mic thing - embarrassing for everyone - the room is a disgrace and no one was listening to any of the singers.

I got a waffle mix and some vegetable oil.  I found the kind that doesn't require eggs.  That'll simplify things for the event.
