Title: THE BACH NOTES
Post by: bk on July 29, 2014, 12:46:23 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Bach-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently listening to the Toccata and Fugue in D MOOner.

I'm sure I couldn't even begin.  So many composers.  So many pieces.

I do have to say that I keep coming back to good old J.S. Bach, though. The B minor Mass, the Passions, the Cantatas, the organ works, the cello suites.

Good morning, all! Jo got herAmazon gift card, so that's something off my back. I did get to talk to Randy about the Ohio property last night, and I believe we may finally get the price lowered enough to sell.

I have physical therapy this morning at 11:00, so I'll leave here around 10:15. I am curious to see how things go at the Forsyth law offices today.

I do believe that is all the news this morning.

TOD:

Almost impossible to answer.

But for early music, I can say that J.S. Bach is by far my single favorite.  I was cleaning a few records the other day, to sample and decide if I still wanted to keep them.  I put on Wanda Landowska playing the Well-Tempered books, thinking I might not return to this one, and with the early recording sound limitations and all, it wowed me, as invariably happens with most anything of Bach's.  (I should add that one thing I love about this big album is the tipped-in signature of the ar-teest.  It's a beauty.

As for the rest of classical music, only the grossest of generalizations could be made, and they'd be useless.  Such as this one:  I suppose I'm partial to the late-Romantic/early 20th century period.  You know, the big fancy stuff.  (How's that for gross?)  But then there's Mozart.  And Mendelssohn.  Pure magic.
Title: Re: THE BACH NOTES
Post by: ChasSmith on July 29, 2014, 07:03:59 AM
I was searching for photographic evidence of this particular album, and came up empty.  I should take one of my own.

It's amazing, though, to be reminded how RCA et al. were continually reissuing such classic recordings as this, in one configuration or another, with different artwork, etc.  And people today complain all day and night about the "double dipping" by Warner Brothers on their Blu-rays.  :)

TOD: I'm pretty partial to dark, dramatic, brooding, and epic as far as my tastes in classical music go...which makes me a sucker for a lot of Russians, Scandavians, and the occasional German.  I also like romantic sweep...Miklos Rozsa is my favourite classical composer (yes, we wrote other things beyond movie scores and several of his movie scores were based on his classical compositions).  Composers I like: Rimsky-Korsokav, Mussorgsky(sp?), Ravel, Debussy (a lot), Stravinsky, Kachaturian, Copeland, Vaughn Williams, Walton, Dvorak...I listen to classical a lot when I'm writing or driving in the car.  Hear lots of pieces I like, but don't remember who wrote them.

Thanks JRand.   I felt really sad last night and just let myself be mad then sad and I'm feeling much better today.   Edith gave her key and parking card to the building maintenance man to give to me.  She didn't even come up to get her stuff.  Of course she didn't mention to him that she already has a new job , just that we had a disagreement and she quit.  At this point I really don't care. There is so much less chaos here with just Bob and I plugging away and getting our work done.   I quite like it, actually.

I have put out the word I'm looking for someone part time.  Not going to advertise, just sent it out via several grapevines.  I have no doubt that things will be fine and better things are to come.   I'm already feeling freer and more in charge of my own business.

I had seen so many UNFUNNY and USELESS Glenn Ford WWII "comedies" that I thought this was just another one of them......I didn't really pay attention to the fact that it was written by Paddy Chayefsky...which makes all the difference.

I enjoyed it very much.....some really great performances by James Garner, Julie Andrews, James Coburn, and Melvin Douglas....and a funny appearance by Steve Franken

I don't even remember Glen Ford in that movie.  Probably because I saw it when it first came out.

Glenn wasn't but it was a good one. It was Garner's favorite of his films.

I listened to Garner read his autobiography while I was on the BBQ trail. Really enjoyed it.

Hello!   Speaking of James Garner, I watched The Thrill of It All last night.  It co-starred Doris Day, of course. And 56-year old expectant mother Arlene Francis.

TOD: Too many to name. Many I fell in love with through studying dance and others through musical devourings.

But the first one that comes to mind that I kept listening to over and over again as a kid was Prokoviev's PETER AND THE WOLF. Of course, I couldn't help but love the narration style of the wonderful Sterling Holloway as well. It seems storytelling always went with music from that point on.

I guess I was too subtle.

Or, it could be the intellectual deficiencies of the reader (I am only speaking for myself, of course). ::)

Apparently, today is hacker day for our web host.  All the sites he hosts that use wordpress have been inundated with people trying to hack into wordpress by using every combination of password they can - these people seriously need to just die.  Quickly and with great pain.  But we've been down twice - our folks are on it and blocking them as fast as they can.

Continued vibes for DR CILLA LIZ......give it to spirit, and see who walks in the door.

It sounds like she is really pushing you away instead of dealing with the situation.  Feelings of guilt will do that.

On the upside you have reached the point of fed-up.

I truly hope you become a judge.
Thanks Jane.  So do I. I have until the 18th to get the app in.  I have it pretty much done. Just have a couple things to finalize and get my references confirmed.

A friend passed to this to me and apropos of nothing (or everything) I pass it on to you

The story of Schroedinger's cat (an epic poem)
May 7, 1982

Dear Cecil:

Cecil, you're my final hope
Of finding out the true Straight Dope
For I have been reading of Schroedinger's cat
But none of my cats are at all like that.
This unusual animal (so it is said)
Is simultaneously live and dead!
What I don't understand is just why he
Can't be one or other, unquestionably.
My future now hangs in between eigenstates.
In one I'm enlightened, the other I ain't.
If you understand, Cecil, then show me the way
And rescue my psyche from quantum decay.
But if this queer thing has perplexed even you,
Then I will and won't see you in Schroedinger's zoo.

— Randy F., Chicago

Cecil replies:

Schroedinger, Erwin! Professor of physics!
Wrote daring equations! Confounded his critics!
(Not bad, eh? Don't worry. This part of the verse
Starts off pretty good, but it gets a lot worse.)
Win saw that the theory that Newton'd invented
By Einstein's discov'ries had been badly dented.
What now? wailed his colleagues. Said Erwin, "Don't panic,
No grease monkey I, but a quantum mechanic.
Consider electrons. Now, these teeny articles
Are sometimes like waves, and then sometimes like particles.
If that's not confusing, the nuclear dance
Of electrons and suchlike is governed by chance!
No sweat, though — my theory permits us to judge
Where some of 'em is and the rest of 'em was."
Not everyone bought this. It threatened to wreck
The comforting linkage of cause and effect.
E'en Einstein had doubts, and so Schroedinger tried
To tell him what quantum mechanics implied.
Said Win to Al, "Brother, suppose we've a cat,
And inside a tube we have put that cat at —
Along with a solitaire deck and some Fritos,
A bottle of Night Train, a couple mosquitoes
(Or something else rhyming) and, oh, if you got 'em,
One vial prussic acid, one decaying ottom
Or atom — whatever — but when it emits,
A trigger device blasts the vial into bits
Which snuffs our poor kitty. The odds of this crime
Are 50 to 50 per hour each time.
The cylinder's sealed. The hour's passed away. Is
Our pussy still purring — or pushing up daisies?
Now, you'd say the cat either lives or it don't
But quantum mechanics is stubborn and won't.
Statistically speaking, the cat (goes the joke),
Is half a cat breathing and half a cat croaked.
To some this may seem a ridiculous split,
But quantum mechanics must answer, "Tough shit.
We may not know much, but one thing's fo' sho':
There's things in the cosmos that we cannot know.
Shine light on electrons — you'll cause them to swerve.
The act of observing disturbs the observed —
Which ruins your test. But then if there's no testing
To see if a particle's moving or resting
Why try to conjecture? Pure useless endeavor!
We know probability — certainty, never.'
The effect of this notion? I very much fear
'Twill make doubtful all things that were formerly clear.
Till soon the cat doctors will say in reports,
"We've just flipped a coin and we've learned he's a corpse."'
So saith Herr Erwin. Quoth Albert, "You're nuts.
God doesn't play dice with the universe, putz.
I'll prove it!" he said, and the Lord knows he tried —
In vain — until fin'ly he more or less died.
Win spoke at the funeral: "Listen, dear friends,
Sweet Al was my buddy. I must make amends.
Though he doubted my theory, I'll say of this saint:
Ten-to-one he's in heaven — but five bucks says he ain't."

— Cecil Adams

My Fair Lady was gorgeous. Lavish physical production. The actors were very good, although Eliza didn't quite have the legit voice to pull off that part of the role. Both of DR elmore3003's friends were excellent. The orchestra (9 pieces) sounded fine, if a bit thin. The Guthrie complex (they've been in about 10 years now, I believe) is something else. They are running Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in the other theatre.

You know, that's a funny thing.  I've always used Edith to translate and she laughed at me when I told her I could speak Spanish. Today I probably had 3 or 4 conversations in Spanish with no problem.  I have had clients from 33 different countries and have figured out ways to speak to them, so I'm not too concerned about it.  I'll figure it out.  I have put the word out for a part time bilingual receptionist but unless someone walks in the door, I'm not actively looking for a couple weeks.  My brother has a secretary who is bilingual.  If it's an emergency, I can get her on the speaker phone

I would do my best to resolve the cases, but some of them would not be resolved.  For those cases I would refund any remaining retainer and give the client a list of referrals to find a new attorney. Court appointed cases would get a new court appointed attorney.

With the kind of work I do, it would be the immigration clients who would have to find a new lawyer.  Since those cases take years, it's not uncommon for someone to have more than one lawyer over time.  It wouldn't be a big deal it's just time consuming. And you have to handle it carefully so that people don't get too upset. Making sure clients have their files etc.

My neighbors are having a big garage sale on Saturday and have invited me to bring whatever I want to sell.  I'm looking forward to it.  I have a number of things to try to sell.  They are pros at it...sell antiques and at flea markets so they'll help me price things etc it could be a lot of fun.

I must admit to a lot of ignorance re Stravinsky - other than the two warhorses I just don't know much of his oeuvre.  I'm listening to the Symphony of Psalms right now, and then Symphony in C.  I must say, his own readings of Rite of Spring and Firebird are not my favorites.  In fact, my favorite Firebird is Ormandy although that isn't on CD.  Say what?  I thought because, like The Moldau, that the version I first heard was mono that it, too, was not on CD and yet I just found it on an import CD and purchased it.  A shame that they didn't also put out The Moldau.

BK, are there any classical recordings like these that Kritzerland could re-release?  That would be cool.  Of course, hopefully, people would want them.

There's no money in classical - although if Sony were easy to license from and reasonable, there are a handful of things I'd do.
