Well, you've read the notes, the notes wrapped themselves around the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the wrapped cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: JARDINIERE!
-
Well, last night was Theater Artists Olympia's pajama party, waffles and movie night. It was a success! We had about a dozen or so paying customers and everyone loved the waffles! We didn't use the waffle mix that I brought. Pug (our artistic director) had another brand of mix and more of it, but my waffle iron worked very well.
-
We watched a couple of Miyazaki animated movies and they were delightfully delightful! I left about an hour ago and those who were still there were going to watch a THIRD movies (I don't know which, though). I think that some of them might even stay overnight and have a sleep-over. Well, good for them...I want to sleep in my own bed.
-
I told Pug that I'd call around noon to find out if she needs me to help clean up and how the rest of the evening went. I certainly don't expect anyone to still be there, but we'll see how much is cleaned up after they've left.
-
And now to bed.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning!
-
God morning, all! I had a strange dream about a train wreck, which may be a metaphor for my current existence, and another that I cannot recall at the moment.
Last night I discovered a LaCie hard drive in my storage area, and it's full, but for the life of me I can get none of it to show up on my computer. I think it may be backups from 2008-2010, but WTF? I do not know what to do with it. I wish i were more computer savvy. I guess I will be calling my Mac man in the next couple of days.
At 10:00 I am meeting Rob Berman at Toyland. He leaves tomorrow for three months in San Diego with Steve Martin's bluegrass musical.
That's it for now.
-
Good morning to all

UPDATE.
The doctor shot my knee with cortisone. I guess no operation is in store has the tear could have occurred before the current issue. I am to ice it for the next couple of days. Continue to keep off my feet for the next while.
Had the MRI on the shoulder. Results on Tuesday. Doctor on Wednesday.

a very interesting article:
Art or Porn?: Filmmakers Who Tested the Limits
These films were censored for obscenity when they first screened. Some went to court whether they were obscene or art. Some won. Some lost.
Now they are shown at museums and on YouTube.
They discuss eight films and they either are shown in its entirety or by their trailers. For those that love experimental films. The first one is Kenneth Anger's "Fireworks"

This is a rainy Saturday in these here parts.
TOD:
None that I remember......we are culturally deprived in these here parts.
-
And the word of the day is: JARDINIERE!
And The Song Of The Day Is: MAKE OUR GARDEN GROW
And One Of My Favorites !
-
We have a cool and overcast/rainy day here today, and I've decided that that suits me just fine. I'll get stuff done around the house, do a little shopping for necessities, and tonight I'm seeing the play BONNIE AND CLYDE by Adam Peck.
-
Tomorrow I'm going up to the beautiful Warner Theatre in Torrington, CT, to catch the final performance of the PETER PAN that I'd earlier declined to play in. I'm not necessarily in the mood (at least, as I write this) to sit through a community theater PETER PAN this weekend, but I trust it'll be enjoyable enough once I'm there. And I would indeed have enjoyed playing in it if time and sanity over the past few weeks had permitted it. They didn't, so that was that.
-
And I'll be playing in RAGTIME there in November, which should be more than enough fun.
-
Good morning, all.
ChasSmith, playing in Ragtime sounds like a great deal of fun. Really love that score.
-
Sadly, BK, while I think journalism has hit a bottom, I think it will also sink even further.

TOD: I used to love going to the Hollywood Bowl, packing a picnic basket, and some wine, and sitting way back in the cheap nosebleed seats (two ro three bucks, always under five) where you could spread out. Always living fairly close to it, we never drove there and parked. We could either walk or we knew where there were side-street neighourhoods where we could drive to and park and then walk the half-mile or mile there. My favourite memory is after a concert one night we were walking back through a little tunnel that went under the freeway. It was jammed packed with people. Someone started singing "It's a Small World" and the whole crowd joined in.
Every year our high school chorus used to sing and do a concert with the Cincinnati Symphony at our high school gym, usually with a young Erich Kunzel conducting (occasionally, an old Max Rudolf). Years later, I stopped into one of the open rehearsals they used to have at the Hollywood Bowl where Kunzel was guest-conducting and had a chance to chat with him about those days.
-
TOD: When I was a teenager, I saw Peter Leonard conduct Mahler's first symphony, Titan, with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra. That was an eye-opener for me as far as classical music was concerned.
When I lived in upstate New York, I managed to get to Tanglewood for what turned out to be Bernstein's last concert, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and Britten's Seascapes from "Peter Grimes." He was supposed to conduct his Arias and Barcarolles with Judy Kaye, but he was too weak for that. I forget who conducted that. It was a rainy August afternoon, and it was cold, in the 40s or 50s. Sitting at the back of the amphitheater was OK because we had managed to get some space under the overhang, but people in the open stayed put, too. And the support and energy and good vibes they gave Bernstein were palpable. He didn't move much, and he skipped the break between the last two movements, but he was in control, using his head to nod this way and that while his hands were holding him up.
Weirdest concert was in the wine cellar of Clos Pegas in Napa Valley. The program was of German composers, and the damp atmosphere of the setting affected the instruments. The musicians would tune up for a long time between pieces, but by the end of a 10-minute piece, you could hear pieces just get a little off track. It wasn't by much, but it was a good lesson. Everyone had a good sense of humor about it, especially the musicians. So, perfect setting, somewhat imperfect music. Didn't matter. Memorable evening.
-
It rained last night. And I slept in today. Life is good.
TOD from yesterday: listening to Christmas music, "Bells are Ringing" original Cast, parts of the soundtrack and parts of the revival), "Tenderloin" and "Subways are for Sleeping."
-
Saturday morning greetings! Now that the wet bar is finished (more or less), things are settling down a bit here. Mary Linda is puttering in that room all day and Rob will join her after he sleeps a bit. He worked midnight-8am and got home just as the rest of us were beginning to stir. I'll fix us a salmon dinner tonight and tomorrow we get to go to church with them because it's a day off from Lima for Fr. Richard.
-
DR Charles Pogue, I miss Maestro Kunzel...
-
TOD:
These are some great memories, everyone. Keep 'em coming.
Here's one of my early ones. It was certainly one of the most inspiring evenings, if for no other reason than the inclusion of the "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story" and my memory of being in line backstage and getting my program signed.
-
(Note the subtle drink stain in the upper left. Unbelievable. It's a bloody miracle that anything from my childhood and teenage years survived at all.)
-
TOD - not a concert, but a cherished classical music memory: on my first visit to NYC in 1967, Mom and I toured the then-new Lincoln Center. At Avery Fisher Hall, the tour guide apologized that we couldn't enter the auditorium because a rehearsal was going on. She instead took us to an observation room where we watched Leonard Bernstein rehearsing with soloist Van Cliburn.
-
Does Josh Groban in concert count for the TOD? (He sang a lot of what would be called classical, after all.)
-
Good morning. I am in the LA area today for several meetings. After the meetings, I will be whisked back to the airport for a flight home.
I stepped outside, and I said "Oh, it is so cool," and my motel roommate said "Wow, it's already hot out."
-
Thanks for the scan DR CHAS SMITH.....excellent.
-
Greetings from Toyland! I've had a loverly visit with Mr Rob Berman, who's heading back to Brooklyn for his trip to San Diego. I'll miss him and I hope his three months there are fun, fulfilling and rewarding. I could not have survived the past year without him, and I'm very grateful for that,
So, i think I'll scan some more of JUBILEE and then head back uptown,

You didn't seem overly thrilled with the mix you purchased. Did you prefer the one that was used?

Your excursions to the Bowl sound like great fun. Once I didn't have to park there. I had the privilege of going as my neighbor's guest in a limo to see the Beatles.
The limo was a treat and the audience a hoot. I can't remember much about the concert. I was too fascinated by all the fainting teenage girls. These girls were my age and I was rather embarrassed by their behavior.

Act One of JUBILEE is scanned, I am happy to report. I can pack up and head for home.
-
I'm up, I'm up - I think I got nine hours of sleep again.
-
And I am back from Shop Rite, with some household cleaning products and a few snack type things.
-
I guess I'll try to jog before the rehearsal rather than after.
-
And I get home to find a goddam jury duty summons, I guess I'll see if my doctor will give me a "cannot walk" pass.
-
Busy day consisting of laundry, schlepping, and sorting.
-
Back from banking and a two-mile jog.
-
Larry, can't you get an automatic deferral one time, or have you used that already?
-
Love the Ma Rainey photo!
-
singdaw - fascinating info about who lives down the block from you!

Page two? Really?

If your doctor won't, scream. Also include difficulty sitting for any length of time and/or needing many bathroom breaks.
-
I assume you mean scream at the doctor. But don't scream or shout when actually at the jury place in a government building!
-
We all scream for ice cream!
-
Just talked to Mom on the phone. Every day this week she's sounded more and more chipper. Richard says maybe she realized how much she'd upset me and I said maybe she realized just how close I came to putting her in assisted living. Either way, it's about time to tell her that we're going to France next month.

Maybe a little bit of both. If she gets upset about France use the same psychology on her. ;)

TOD:
Hard to pick just a few. I have enjoyed reading the recollections of fellow DRs.
I have been enraptured at many a choral concert. I remember a concert at Carnegie Hall in NYC, probably during the 1970s, where a Soviet choir performed. I remember being enraptured by the singing, but there were also large bodyguards at the foot of the stage, arms crossed, facing out into the audience. I assumed they were there to deter any of the performers thinking of defecting.
I sang with a choir in Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center - those images are certainly burned into my brain!
I saw a Bach specialist conduct the B minor mass, in its entirety, from memory. That was impressive.
I will never forget my first encounters in the concert hall with the Duruflé Requiem and the Britten War Requiem. Both sublimely beautiful and ineffably moving scores.
-
When we lived in LA we often went to the concerts conducted by Zubin Mehta. My parent's had season tickets and would occasionally give them to us. They were all a delightful treat for us. When we moved to NJ he moved to NY, however, we were unable to attend any of his concerts.
I've mentioned this before, the most incredible concert I have attended was Jascha Heifetz's last concert before he retired. My father took me since my mother was unable to go. Lucky me.
-
Now I must dry my hair and undo all the good my swim did for me today. All my muscles feels exceptionally loose. I felt soooo good while swimming today.
-
Yes, the Heifetz concert, certainly one of the more significant. Both DR Jane and I were in attendance, back when we were wee tiny little DRs.
-
Get us off Page 2 Page 3.
-
Scream Shout Knock Yourself Out.
They don't write lyrics like that anymore.

I met Pug down at the theater and it was pretty much cleaned up. I did (finally) swap out the light fixture for the bathroom. That now looks very nice. Overall, it was a success! We brought in just over $100! We'll definitely keep doing this...just maybe not overnight. Pug told me that it didn't end until about 4:00! Yikes! Next time, we'll just advertise a double (or triple) feature.

And now, I'm just at home, surfing the net. :)

I just purchased a book for my Nook and was surprised I needed to update my credit card which expired in January. I really don't buy books very often-thank you Oregon eBook library.
That reminds me. I can't get any Kate Morton novels. DR George do you show any of hers in the system as an option?

Thanks.

Jane, my library doesn't have any Kate Morton e-books. But her titles are available. You should be able to do a search with the option "Additional Titles to Recommend." That should bring up many, Many, MANY (that's THREE manys) titles that are available through OverDrive that you library doesn't own. Have you tried that before?

I've done enough mischief about the apartment tonight, I will chill out and then go to bed.

None of her books are showing up using the advance search and that surprised me. I wonder why you see them and I don't. I'm going to try again.

It could be that your library administrators have turned off that option. Maybe they don't want to be inundated with requests for purchase and they only have so much of a budget...maybe.
-
DR George I appreciate your checking for me. I double checked using my Nook and Kate Morton does not show up doing the advanced search.
-
You can also go to www.overdrive.com and see what titles are available.

I have a lot of titles I have requested. One I recommended oddly is in my holds yet the book is not available.

Thanks, this is interesting. I bet there are tons more books on here than show up on my advance search. I will refer to this link when my library doesn't offer a book.

My library now shows all the books I have recommended. So far it is around 26.

Cool!
-
Yup. It was a long time before I was able to find a book to recommend. Once one book worked I was able to get a good number of them. I suspect the option wasn't truly working as it should have been. A number of the books have become available but I am waiting for far more than half of them to come in.

Elmore jury vibes
-
this evening the Vixter and her boyfriend went to Florida
-
she'll be gone for three weeks
-
and I am sad
-
Had a fun stumble-through - some fumfered lyrics, but I'd rather have that happen at the stumble-through than the show. Show structure works well and the cast is just great. This is the first show we've had in ages without any young people - it's a nice change, but on the other hand, I just miss their fun energy.
-
Page three? Really?
-
this is where I had lunch today
http://www.nytasteofafrica.com/menu/
Elmore I am sorry I forgot to take a picture I know how you like that :)
-
I felt quite adventurous eating there
-
The owner, a gentleman from Ghana, asked me if it was my first time there and when I said yes he told me he would make a sample plate and explain everything to me
-
You know, I'm beginning to envy DR vixmom the Lawn Guyland scene. Just a little bit. There's a lot available there.
Not that the other close and distant suburbs of NYC don't share that. But I have a feeling there's something about the Guyland density and layout that's especially conducive to this.
-
The play tonight (Bonnie & Clyde) was so-so. Beautifully performed, for the most part, but someone needs to do something with the script.
-
The plate he brought out had some curried chicken,a slice of fried plantain an eggplant dish (delicious but Oh my so spicy hot!!), a cabbage dish, spinach stew, black keyed peas , jollfo rice and pepper soup ( way too spicy hot for the likes of me )
I ended up ordering something call 'Amalla" which was what Isaac (the owner) described as a yam dumpling (warning several times that it was an African yam and not a sweet potato) what it was was a bland tasting doughy lump in its own little bowl I ordered the spinach stew and was asked beef , fish or goat? I went with beef
That game as a big very tasty stew with a bit of a spicy kick... Isaac explained I should take a bit of the amalla and then scoop of some of the stew and eat it together. I reached for my knife and fork and was told I should use a spoon ... he was right you don;t want all the delicious juice to drain away . The blandness of the dumpling and the spiciness of the stew complemented each other perfectly
It was huge amount of food and I ended up bringing half home
-
where is everybody today?
-
Elmore I am sorry I forgot to take a picture I know how you like that
;D
-
DR vixmom - how kind and generous of that gentleman!! :)
-
Watching a fun old Peter Sellers film called The World of Henry Orient.
The "modern" piano concerto scene is priceless!
-
There is a Lebanese restaurant near here that I've been curious about. Have never tried that cuisine.

DR vixmom - so DR The Vixter was able to get 3 weeks off from the waitressing job?
-
DR vixmom - so DR The Vixter was able to get 3 weeks off from the waitressing job?

I hope she gets a lot of rest
-
It was actually a good time for her to take timer off as all teh high school kids and college kids are working an hours are limited come September the college kids go away and the high school kids activities get in the way and more hours will be availablle to her
-

I'm here...I'm just watching TV.

Really??

Well, if you must!

;)
-
I'm now going to watch "America's Got Talent" recorded on my DVR.
-
I have three episodes to get through.
-
I will be fast-forwarding through a lot of this.
-
I don't need to see all the montages, nor hear all the sob stories.
-
And since we're so close...
-
PAGE FIVE AMERICA'S GOT TALENT DANCE!!
-
Finished with my viewing and listening to the next Ormandy disc in the set I'm going through. I have heard several versions of the Shostakovich fifth, but none has "gotten" to me like this later Ormandy version recorded in 1975, I think. Whatever recordist problems they had on whatever other RCA Ormandy from the 70s, it is not in evidence on this recording which is clear as a bell and brilliant. But what a performance and what music.
-
which remind me I have something to put in the mail to George
Really??
yep 2 things actually but they will gotogether
-
ok i keep fallingasleep dsp gpodnightg
-
On AGT (that's "America's Got Talent" in America's Got Talent lingo), two bands performed original music and even before they groups performed, both Howie and Howard were biased against them just because they were performing original music. What's that all about?
-
I do believe it is drizzling outside - let it turn to rain and let it rain all night long.
-
The judges are being overly judgmental on this episode. :-\
-
There are some very good performers, though.
-
Listening to The Rite of Spring an actual Ormandy Columbia mono recording - it's brilliant and puts the stereo Stravinsky-conducted version to shame.
-
And for those who are interested (such as myself)...NEW IMAGES FROM DOCTOR WHO SERIES 8 APPEAR (http://www.denofgeek.us/tv/doctor-who/237879/new-images-from-doctor-who-series-8-appear)!
:D
