Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a sound check and were showy, and now it is time for you to post until the showy cows come home.

There were several CD box sets released last year that consist of nothing but different recordings of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring.

Probably not appropriate for listening while sitting in LA traffic.        :)

Good morning, all.

It's overcast and there has been some very gentle rain falling, with some nice breezes, this morning.  Frankly, I wouldn't mind if that lasted all day, but I think it's supposed to clear up.

Man, I so remember those times in L.A. I wished it would just rain, and rain some more.

I remember when the Philadelphia Orchestra moved from Columbia to RCA.  Things like that were a really big deal then.  Scandal in the music world!  But I wasn't following it other than noting it at the time, and I'd love to read some history of this stuff now.  Also, if I'm remembering the timeline right, I was heavily into acquiring and listening to Toscanini recordings -- as much, if not more than, the contemporaries -- so I was hearing relatively few of the new Ormandy releases.

So along with the musical chairs, weren't recording techniques changing quite a bit in those years?  The quality of vinyl in this country was certainly taking a turn for the worse.  A confluence of bad events.  Remember RCA's "flexible" LPs?  Those, in retrospect, may not in and of themselves been a bad thing, but they sure added to the impression of increasingly shitty quality.  And the exact opposite was happening in Europe, where the quality of vinyl was incredible.

Back to Philadelphia.  Was that change well received back then?  I want to say no, that most people didn't think it was a good idea at all, but these are vague general impressions.  But in reading BK's observations now, I'm thinking the "people" were right!  :)

Back to Columbia.  Reading a little bit in the audiophile press in later years, I learned that the classical recordings engineered by John McClure at Columbia are now held in high regard because there they employed good clear (and simple) miking with none of the doctoring that came later.  (I don't know if he did any of Philadelphia's.)

Sorry for the rambling mess.  I'm pulling bits and pieces of memory out of my arse as I type.  Which makes for a lovely mental image, don't you think?

Good morning, all! I slept late and I hope the laundry room is free so I can do this laundry, vacuum, and tidy up.

I've been up about an hour, reading the Proms reviews for last night's "Kiss Me Kate," for which I recommended my Indiana friend Ben Davis, dealing with a computer backup, and pondering my life.

More to follow.

I read through some of the comments, and ... maybe it's not a joke?  I don't know.  There are a lot of crazy ideas out there, some of which seem to work.

But not for me, thanks.   :)   I'll stick with my VPI HW-17.

Which, by the way, I am shocked -- no, actually, make that stunned -- to google, and to find it going for as much as ... $1,800???

Maybe THOSE web pages are the joke!  Lordy.  (I paid $500 for a secondhand one some 20 years ago, for what was then an $800 machine.)

I need to check out methods of getting to City Hall and the jury room before I decide to ask my doctor for an out from jury duty.  There may be a  bus to get me there easily. We'll see.

Today, I've been home doing not much of anything.  I did a load of laundry and watched the Chris O'Donnell episode from last season's "Who Do You Think You Are?"  Now, I have to take a shower and go to my parents' house for visiting and eating and game playing time.  My sister and niece will be there.  I don't know if my sister's boyfriend will be there.  He just had a pacemaker installed last week. :o He's doing much better now, so that's good.

It must be laundry day as I also am doing a load.  Earlier we went for a short walk in the park and out for brunch with a stop at the market.  I'm getting low on my laundry detergent and 4 out of 5 markets in town do not carry it.  I hope the 5th market still does.

Driving into town we saw a helicopter collecting water from the lake.  In the past they have had buckets they scooped the water into.  This time they had what looked like a hose that dipped into the water while the helicopter hovered just above the lake.

I couldn't find a photo of the helicopter over the water.  This is what the copter looked like and I think that is the hose on the side-not sure.

We had expected the copter to go the direction we came from and all the way up the road to the big fire there.  Instead it went west but we couldn't see any smoke in the mountains there.

Had a lot of fun in Austin yesterday. Started with a trip to a barbecue food truck, where the lines were so long everything but pulled pork was sold out by the time I got to place my order. So I had, you guessed it, pulled pork.

We went to another truck and they had everything but beef ribs and sausage, so I had some great brisket and ribs with a slice of buttermilk pie. I was very happy.

Then my friend Deb and I went out to a brewery opening. It was less than fun in the heat, but it was at a place overlooking Lake Travis, so it was beautiful, even if the water levels were way below normal.

How very nice.  We passed a man in the park playing his guitar and singing hoping for donations.  People who can't sing or play should not be permitted to disturb the peace in the park.  It is bad enough we have to suffer them on the streets in town.  This guy was so bad I think Keith finally got it why I donate to anyone with some sort of talent.  Sadly I rarely come across people I'm willing to give money, unless it would be for them to go away-lol

Back from PETER PAN, and it turned out to be a damned fine one.

This theater is to die for, and I would have enjoyed playing the show.  The production looked to be better than the one I played there several years ago, and the 22-piece orchestra (in a real pit -- imagine!) was excellent.

Here's the theater.  I took these ten years ago while playing in a production of WEST SIDE STORY.  (scroll down)

Seriously though,  VIBES the fires stay   far far away form you

Much appreciated.

I am addicted to a page on FB called RogueWeather.Com (we live in the Rogue Valley).  It is fascinating and scary.  I watched one video from firefighters in California, that same with a language warning.  As the firefighters were driving along the road the fire exploded around them.  They began filming after the worst of it.  I don't blame the swearing one bit ;D

Wouldn't have simply been easier for the Vixter to fly from Florida to Canada?

Consider this 3 week separation preparation for when you have an empty nest and enjoy your alone time with Vixdad.

we also bought the tickets for Canada  before she bought hers for Florida

The rest would have been a nuisance but possible to manage ;)

she doesn't have a straight flight throught ot Florida  - changes plans in Baltimore  then the flight to Canada is three legs  plus and  items that she might have collected  on her trip in Florida   too much stff to be dragging around

when is the Kritzerland show?

I think the Kritzerland shows are November 15 & 16, but BK will have to confirm.  Alas, we won't be able to come in early enough to catch RAGTIME - I have an AAUW commitment here in Middletown on Nov. 10.  We'll probably plan our NYC arrival for the 12th or 13th (Richard's birthday).

Great news that he's doing well.

Thanks, Fred!  He didn't come to my parents' house, but my sister said that he's just taking it easy now.

I'm listening to last night's BBC Proms broadcast of "Kiss Me Kate" with my friends Ben Davis as Fred Graham/Petruchio and John Wilson conducting.

The one time that I went to London, I saw the American production that transferred from Broadway.  It's the production that was filmed and released on DVD (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00008NFR6/) (which is available new for as little as $61!), except that Rachel York is on the DVD and we saw Marin Mazzie.

Luca's dinner was wonderful, and it was great to see the episode of Food Network Star while dining. He really showed on this episode that he has star potential, more so than ever before, and his pilot looked incredible, too.

He's just the nicest man. He saw me from afar and came up to shake my hand and thank me for coming to the dinner, even while others were trying to get their pictures taken with him. That made me feel good.

That's a beautiful theater, Chas!

Yes.  I'll be playing in RAGTIME in November.

I have yet to see RAGTIME.  A local high school did it a few years ago, and I'd heard that it was very good, but I couldn't get to it.  I was involved in a show that had performances on the same days.  I hate it when that happens.

I love the RAGTIME original Broadway cast album.  There are a couple of songs on the "Songs from Ragtime" CD that I like better than the versions on the Broadway cast album, but I understand that the changes are for dramatic reasons.  I haven't gotten the seven-track revival CD, but I love BK's "Ragtime: Themes From The Hit Musical" CD with Brad Ellis' Little Big Band. :D

I saw the national tour when it played San Antonio. It was right after I moved here and may have been my first visit to the Majestic. It was almost sold out, but I managed to snag a ticket in the very last row, about a mile above the stage. Didn't matter, the sound system as perfect. You could hear every singer plainly and above the music. The acting was wonderful, and I wasn't the only person in tears by the end of the evening.

I've always loved the book, which I may have read 7 or 8 times. But the show worked on emotional levels the book didn't hit. It was true to Doctorow's narrative, but the writers made it their own. I'd love to see it again.

Back from the show and then some food.

Tonight's Kritzerland show, for me, has entered the Kritzerland pantheon - just a magical evening with everything working perfectly. Big laughs, tears, and wonderful ovations throughout the evening - I can always tell how vocal an audience is going to be during my first patter, and tonight I knew they would be one of our best and most vocal audiences instantly. Our cast could not have been better: Dan Callaway (oh are we going to miss him!), Jennifer Kranz (her first time with us and delivering wonderfully), Heather Lee (stopping the show three times), Lisa Livesay (oh are we going to miss her!), and Shannon Warne (this woman is spectacular), and our special guest Kay Cole (always a treat and she was simply great), all accompanied by the amazing Tom Griep. Co-produced by the mighty Adryan Russ. And now, on to our fourth anniversary show!
