Title: NOTES FROM THE FJORD
Post by: bk on August 08, 2014, 12:08:19 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were from the fjord, and now it is time for you to post until the fjord cows come home.

As most of you know, this month is the ten-year anniversary of my revue, What If.  So it's only fitting that some stupid movie stole my title :)  Once again, we're ahead of our time.  The original title of this film was The F Word, which is a much better title than the one they stole.

In iTunes right now:  Forbidden Broadway Comes Out Swinging (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KLF5JHS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).  I just bought it late last night (less than an hour ago), but it included AutoRip, so I was able to download the MP3s right away. So far, it's pretty funny.

It's interesting (kind of) that  movies not allowed to use titles of other movies without permission (I'm recalling the brouhaha over "The Butler" being use as a title, which forced it to be called Lee Daniels' The Butler) - while they can use titles of works in another medium with no one caring?

BLU - Cronenberg's Scanners which, oddly, I never saw.  And I need to treat myself to another Demy out of the Criterion box.

CD or LP - Don't know yet, but a couple of records would be just the ticket.  We'll see.

TOD:

If I get to the library I'll watch "Le Week-end." If not, maybe an Eric Rohmer movie.

In the car, I'll be finishing up a book called "Sous-Chef," which is the latest -- and least interesting -- food book I've come across in a while. It's short, which is really in its favor.

Good morning, all! Last night was not a god night, and it seems tobe the end of a lousy week. I am hoping that whatever madness has possessed the Man from Philadelphia is over, and I hear no more from him. Ever.

Around 2:30 I awoke from a dream involving my parents. I cannot recall much of it nw, but it took place in the house where I grew up, my brother randy was still very small, and it had something to do with my going into the military. My only real memories of the dream now are my stripping my bed in the room I shared with Macbeth and taking a plaid blanket that I folded up, and saying "Mama, I don't know when we'll see each other again." And I woke with this enormous sense of loss and grief. I wept for a while and went back to sleep.

So, today I've got therapy and still no television service from Time Warner. So, service has now been out more than 24 hours.

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates your willingness to accept loss only if those around you do so - do not bear their burden, it belongs to them.

My boss found out today he's allergic to beef as well as mesquite, live oak and pecan, which are the woods we use to smoke beef. I think he's saying he's allergic to Texas.

Did he get bitten by the tick that causes a red meat allergy?

James Brady's death has now been declared a homicide as it was determined he died from the gunshot wounds received thirty-plus years ago when he and President Reagan were both shot.

Interesting that it is declared a homicide, not that it is.  How often is an old injury like this declared a homicide?

This way, if he is released from the loony bin, he can be charged with murder and locked in jail for the rest of his life.

Selling country property can take a long time, and in this market who knows.  First we have to decide when we will put it up for sale, possibly in the spring.

We love it here but the children aren't coming home anymore.
All the more reason to love it!

Homicide is the killing of a human being due to the act or failure to act of another.  It isn't the same thing as murder. I'm not sure that it's common to declare a death a homicide after so many years, but if his death was caused by the gunshot wound...well I supposed technically...

Well, my friend Margo and her friend Marsha and I are going to the movies tonight.  Two movies in one week...that's quite unusual for me.  We're going to see "Get On Up":

Quote
In his follow-up to the four-time Academy AwardŽ-nominated blockbuster The Help, Tate Taylor directs 42's Chadwick Boseman as James Brown in Get on Up. Based on the incredible life story of the Godfather of Soul, the film will give a fearless look inside the music, moves and moods of Brown, taking audiences on the journey from his impoverished childhood to his evolution into one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Boseman is joined in the drama by Viola Davis, Octavia  Spencer, Nelsan Ellis, Lennie James, Tika Sumpter, Jill Scott and Dan Aykroyd.

It got a 78% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/get_on_up/).

Contrary to popular belief, Scandanavia is not the only place to see fjords.  Of course, as BK noted, there is your local Fjord dealer.  But you can also see fjords in Chile, which I saw when I cruised around Cape Horn and up the western coast of Chile.

Was that as beautiful a trip as it sounds?

Well, I didn't spend much time lounging by the pool on that cruise.  The fjords were stunning, I loved stopping in the Falkland Islands, and there was something rather amazing about sailing around Cape Horn and past Tiera del Fuego (just so I could type Tiera del Fuego).

Except that was the cruise that unofficially had the Norovirus.  Half the passengers and crew were sick for all or part of the two week cruise.  Two of the three dining rooms were closed  for the first week; so you just showed up for dinner and waited in line until they had an opening at one of the tables.  The ship was dirty because they didn't have enough staff to keep it cleaned . and you tried to stay away from close quarters with people.  Not a great cruise.

Cilla, did you go to a ball game tonight?

Nope they are out of town.  They are actually in St Paul. They won

And you didn't feel like driving to St. Paul?

I was tired tonight, so I stayed home.  It was a good week, all in all, but it was a lot of work and it wore me out

LOL, I skipped the last two games because it was raining, not about to drive that far

Any idea when the interviews might be scheduled?

I did go to the casino for lunch again today.  Tried the buffet. It wasn't too bad, but was a buffet

I love a good buffet.  Which is why I am fat.

I do need to work tomorrow.  There was too much going on this week to do the organizing and prioritizing that I need to do, but that's good.  It was a really good week,  I got a lot done and learned that I can run the office by myself.  I will do that until I know about the new job.  If I don't get it, I may hire someone part time, but I may not.   I'll be glad when I know what the future will bring....

But it feels fabulous to be on my own again.  I really feel free

I do like a good buffet and a lot of what I had was good.  But some of it tasted like it had been in the warming tray a while.  I don't like that so much.   I will definitely go back there, though.

I haven't had a buffet in a 'coon's age.

Enjoy the movie DR George.

We rented BAD WORDS with Jason Bateman.  I don't have high hopes.

Thanks, Jane.  There were mixed reviews between the three of us.  Marsha and Margo really liked it, although Marsha liked it more than Margo.  I thought that the acting was pretty good (although the lead, Chadwick Boseman as James Brown), mumbled so much that I couldn't understand him.  He was loud enough, he just didn't enunciate very much.  I assumed that that was the way James Brown really spoke, but I don't know.

Overall though, the movie was just snippets of his life, not told in any kind of linear way (which isn't bad per se), but it jumped back and forth and back and forth, and at times he spoke directly to the camera, and I just couldn't figure out any point to it.  Margo thought that just letting people know about his life was the point, but I just didn't get it.

If you're a James Brown fan then you'll probably enjoy it a lot more than I did.  Good acting all around, but I won't need to see it again.

Has anyone seen The Hundred Foot Journey?  I'm thinking about it

I really want to see this.
