Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Polaroids, and now it is time for you to post until the Polaroid cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  for a while, I did own a Polaroid camera, but I don't know if it was a "Land" or "600" or what.  I found some pictures that I took at work about 20 years ago, and they were falling apart.  The adhesive holding the border to the picture must've broken down and the parts have started separating from each other.  The images are still fine, so that's a small consolation.  I just put them back in the box where I found them.  We'll see what they look like the next time I dig them out.

There are some stores in Florida (and perhaps elsewhere) called Polaroid Fotobar where you can get photos printed like the images of the past and actually buy cameras and film.

This one is in the mall two miles from my house.

I never owned a Polaroid camera. I remember seeing one growing up, and yes - thinking it was magic. That probably would have been in the early 1970's.

TOD:

I had a Polaroid camera back in the 1960s-70s.  I don't think they took the most durable photos.

In fact, there's a picture of me (sans beard) with client Rip Taylor in my 2nd memoir that was shot on my Polaroid.  Not the best, but the only one I had with Rip.

Good morning, all!  I, too, had a horrible night of sleep, but I am ready to run down to my pharmacy for my monthly meds, fllowing which I will stop at the market for a few necessary items.

My therapy ended last Friday, August 8, so on August 4, I asked my doctor for a renewal. I'm still waiting. It's irritating because the HMO referral dept does not continue from the last period's expiration date, say Aug. 9; no, it begins on whatever day the doctor submits the referral. As a consequence, I'll be lucky for three weeks of therapy in the month I'm given.  It's too screwed up, and since I don't have the referral yet in the post, I need to call them this morning, confirm it's in place, abd ask them to fax it to the therapists. Total bullshit.

So, that's my day.  Last night, i read the critical notes for the new critical edition of Kiss Me Kate, which has some wonderful scholarship but has one section on a cut number that reveals little knowledge on some of Porter's musical interests or earlier shows. Still, I look forward to the publication of the full score this autumn, I believe.

I have this medical deferment from jury duty in September, but i can find nothing on the cockamamie summons - and there are phone numbers, web pages, and a lot of other crap - about what to do with a letter from one's doctor. The web page tells me to go to my country for further information. And there is nothing helpful there. I am very frustrated.

TOD:

Never had my own Polaroid camera, and I don't think anyone in our family did, either, even though we had a few avid picture takers.  We did know one or two people who had one, and the whole thing seemed exotic and fantastical, and the pictures themselves always had a "different" quality to them from what we were used to with our Brownies and Instamatics.  This would have been in the days before the SX-70, which as I recall it, simplified and sped up the camera workings, bringing more automation to the process.

So, in the 1970s, the company I was working for had an SX-70, and I borrowed it a couple of times to take a "pack" of pictures, but the only thing I really liked about it was the automation and, of course, the instant prints.  I thought it made everything a little too reddish and never delivered a sharp focus...but that could have just been me and whatever I was taking at the time.  I wonder if I even have one or two of those pictures now.

In the early 1980s some friends had the short-lived Kodak "Instant Camera" and I thought I liked the general look of their pictures better than the SX-70 ones.  I considered getting one, but the lawsuit happened and Kodak was out of that business faster than a gazelle doing something or other.  Long story short, I never got my SX-70, and I never got my Kodak!

TOD - I was director of the Middletown Campus library when expecting Rob and casually mentioned during coffee break that we'd like a Polaroid camera to photograph our new baby.  My staff took me to lunch at the Golden Lamb and gave us the funds to purchase the camera - a Polaroid Sun 660.  We first used it at the second wedding of Richard's older brother on July 13, 1985, and then many times after Rob was born on September 7.  I sent a lot of Polaroids with thank-you notes for newborn gifts.  Some of the photos have held up well and others have deteriorated.

Oy! The humidity is terrible. I've been to pharmacy and two markets, since the first market - as usual, so why do I go there? - did not have what I was looking for.  I've been on two buses, a No 7 and a 104, that had no AC, and I am drenched in sweat. I am not stepping out again today.

We had relatives who had Polaroid cameras....which did seem like magic, although as DR CHAS SMITH said, I was never too impressed with the quality of the photo.

My cousin had one of the Polaroid Swinger cameras that took small black/white photos.

Many years ago, I finally bought one.  I liked it because it spit out the photo and you didn't have to mess with finishing chemicals or brushes.  I don't remember the last photo I took.

My camera:

We had a great rehearsal last night - I didn't use my book at all!  Still lots of comedy to find, but I made a good start.

And then on the way home, the terrible news was on the radio.  Shocking....but perhaps not unexpected.  Robin Williams was an original in the best and worst sense of the word....sometimes he was annoying to me....but then he would do something that made me pay attention or think....

I liked him best in his serious roles.

Morning, all!

Still very much saddened by the loss of Robin Williams; simply the most incredibly nimbly-thinking comic I've ever witnessed. His "Meltdowner's Nightmare" improvisation on one of his early albums just blew me away.

TOD: we were never much of a photography family, so we never had a Polaroid camera that I can recall. In overnight camp, the parents gave me a disposable camera, and I have a couple of great grainy shots of the sunset and friends whom I wish I stayed in touch with... :/

One year ago today, I arrived in Dubln with Rob Berman and Patrick Cummings to record ROBERTA. Around 3:00 or so, we had our first rehearsal with our three couturier ladies, Anna the fitter (Aine Mulvey), Marie the cutter (Christina Whyte), and Sidonie the presser (Mary O'Sullivan). I remember Rob's surprised and happy look when they burst into their 3-part harmonies.

Jason Graae and Annalene Beechey joined us the next day, with Eamonn and John Molloy, and my memory is that Kim Criswell showed up on the 14th.  I miss them all.

DR Vixmom, I was looking for something else in the HHW archives and came across a post of mine from May 25, 2009, which answers the question you asked last night:

More TOD - I just put one of my favorite cook-out specialties in the oven - baked beans.  Actually, it's just Campbell's Pork & Beans, doctored up with brown sugar, molasses, catsup, mustard, and hotdog relish.  I got this recipe from a friend of my Mom's almost 40 years ago.  For just Richard and myself, I'm making a small batch, but if you invite me to a cook-out, I'll make a double or triple recipe!

1 28-oz can Campbell's Pork & Beans
2 T brown sugar
1/4 C molasses
1/4 C catsup
1 t mustard
1 t hotdog relish

Put bacon slices on top, bake at 375o for 1 hour & 15 minutes.

(The original recipe calls for one small onion chopped, but we don't cook with onions in our house...)

For Saturday's cookout, I put the "baked" beans in the crockpot before we left for the birthday party and we picked it up between events.  For crockpot cooking, you should drain most of the liquid off the canned beans because the crockpot makes a lot of liquid during the cooking process.  And, Saturday, I made a double-double recipe!

I knew Charles Keating and his death saddened me. He used to hang out in the Drama Book sHop, and occasionally he'd bring actors from whatever soap he was on to meet me. We'd hide in one of the stacks and gossip. He was absolutely charming and completely outrageous. He was a wonderful actor, but the revival with Charles, Alec Baldwin, Joseph Maher, and Zoe Wannamaker miscast Keating and Maher, who should have changed roles.

I saw Joseph Maher in two Orton comedies, LOOT and ENTERTAINING MR SLOANE with Maxwell Caulfield, who was also a Drama Book Shop friend in the early 1980s. Maher died a couple of years ago. I admired his work, although he was miscast in LOOT, but I don't recall ever meeting him.

I thought he was so TALENTED and from the new reports so NICE.

May God Bless him and he Finally be at peace.

It's so hard to be a COMEDIAN and always feel you have to be funny.   Thats certainly a lot of pressure.

I loved him in all his movies, and particularly as a Serious Actor.

Yesterday I made a couple of tuna sandwiches.  Unfortunately, I didn't have any of the ingredients, so they weren't very filling.

A few days ago I mentioned, in passing, getting an e-mail regarding a close-out on the 2012 Fords.  I thought that was very weird, but some people offered suggestions of what it might mean.

Well, this morning I got another e-mail from the same company that pushes it right into the Twilight Zone.

"Start 2013 in a New Ford Vehicle"

Seriously, don't you think that is really weird??

T.O.D.

My Aunt Ruth always had every new gadget that came along.  She had one of the first remote control televisions, it was still attached to the TV with a cord.  She, of course, had the first Polaroid camera that I had ever seen.  I remember all the steps you had to take after the photo came out of the camera.  I remember she yelled at me because I picked up one of the pictures before it had completely dried.

Naturally, I had to have a Polaroid camera.  Over the years, I had several, starting with the Swinger.  The last Polaroid camera I had was very nice, except the photos were about the size of a book of stamps.  The best instant camera I ever had was the Kodak Instant.  That was a great camera.

DR TCB one Christmas, a couple of years after we lived here, Craig asked me why I sent him an email about a card we had received when he was in the next room.  After a long pause I realized he was referring to an email I had sent the previous year.

I'd call the phone number and ask.

Weird morning so far. Boss is sharing stories of how his chandelier came crashing down into the dining room table at 5:55 this morning before anyone was awake. And only he, the cat and the dog went to investigate. Cat and dog, however, were not going into the room until Mike did.

Exactly my thinking!

Last night, after I went to bed, my computer turned on.

Twice. It always freaks me out when it happens.

I need to set up my laptop to see if someone's trying to leave me a message. There's no way my Mac will stay on long enough for a ghost to settle down to communicating.  I think the laptop might work but the lack of a keyboard might confuse the ghost(s). There are definitely more than one in this apartment.

This week, I got a whistler. There's the lady who speaks German or some language that's not English, French, or Spanish, the man who might be my dad's spirit, the neighbor below me who hanged himself, and now the whistler.

Picked up one package.  I got two Ormandy CDs from overseas - one the RCA recording of the Rachmaninov Second symphony - I had the domestic pressing but I was guessing the Japanese would be better and it was - the US version was louder and harsh, the Japanese didn't have quite so much level and was warm and inviting.  I also got a disc of all mono Ormandy, including The Rite of Spring.  I'd already had that version on another CD compilation but the difference here is night and day - this mastering is much cleaner and more pleasant and I absolutely love this performance.  Also on the disc in mono are Petrouchka and The Firebird suites - I grew up loving the Ormandy mono of the latter so it's great to have it.

This is a very strange time for me.  I'm totally in limbo.  I stopped taking new cases.  I have plenty to do with my current client base and don't need to stress more.  I can't really hire someone to help at this point because I will  (hopefully) be saying "you no longer have a job" in a month of two, and if I get a temp, they'd just be taking messages for me which my machine can do. Plus limbo isn't a good time to train someone.

Almost everyone I knew who worked with her - a musician on WONDERFUL TOWN, dresser and much of the WOMAN OF THE YEAR cast, publisher of the music for WOMAN OF THE YEAR - had little good to say about her.  My friend Charlie who was Bernstein's assistant liked her, but she was a friend of Lenny's.  I never encountered her, so I have no opinion except that I thought her performance stank in WOMAN OF THE YEAR.

My friend in the original cast of WOMAN OF THE YEAR hated her until Raquel Welch took over. then he missed her.

As those who've read Album Produced By know, I absolutely loved and was completely smitten with Miss Bacall from my one experience working with her and from our several phone conversations after.  I'll recount that story in the notes tonight.

With Humphrey Bogart being my all time favorite actor, I'm particularly saddened by the passing of Lauren Bacall.

I was never fortunate enough to meet her, but I did see her in WOMAN OF THE YEAR at the Dorothy Chandler in Los Angeles.  She was terrific.

And speaking of big -

Just back from the monthly outing to hear a live BIG BAND. They don't play standards, but charts by Minnesota composers.  Excellent group of 19 musicians!

Yesterday I made a couple of tuna sandwiches.  Unfortunately, I didn't have any of the ingredients, so they weren't very filling.

for me the ingredients would be tuna, bread, mayo.... you are correct without any of those ingredients the sandwiches would not be very filling

Went to a wake/memorial for a few friends, including Joyce, whom I wrote about a few weeks ago. There were some great stories about all of them. Her late husband, Walter, had fought at the Battle of the Bulge and apparently related a couple of stories about the horrors of that to a few of his closer friends.

As some of us were beginning to leave, this deluge swept down, with plenty of thunder and lightning accompanying the rain. So, we had to stay put for a while, meant another drink to the memories of Joyce, Walter, Louie and Charlie. While we were taking, the lights went out and the rain started to stream in overhead. It didn't bring a halt to the fun, which is the way they would have wanted it.

One of the women there is apparently 93, though she doesn't look it. She attributes her longevity to two Beefeater martinis a day and cross country skiing, which she does all winter apparently. When she goes, she's left it in her will that she wants Champagne poured at the funeral. And then she wants everyone there to divide up the rest of her liquor because her son doesn't drink.

I'd call the phone number and ask.

you have apparently never attempted to call a government office in New York..... it is to laugh

Now Lauren Bacall has died.

I have told this story before.  When my Mom and my aunt came to New Jersey to visit me, they wanted to go see a show.  So I got us tickets to WOMAN OF THE YEAR.  I drove them to the Palace Theatre and then I went to park the car.  When I got back to the theater, they were all excited because Miss Bacall had arrived and stopped to chat with them.  After the show I went and got the car, and when I got back, apparently Lauren by this time, had come out and stopped to see if my mom and aunt had enjoyed the show.  Then she was afraid to leave them alone, so she got the security guard from next door to keep an eye on them until I got back.

At least I got to see her onstage.

On my way home tonight I saw a sign for the law firm from out of town that wanted me to be their local branch about a year ago.  Interesting.  So they now have an office here.  Instead of looking at it as real competition, I think it's just another piece of the puzzle falling into place.  Now my clients would have another good firm to go to when I get the new job and close the office :)

At least it's not a firm you're considering for employment. I'm still pondering if I should return the Packard humanities institute call from February.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just made tuna salad, following my Aunt Dorothy's recipe: celery, sweet relish, onion, chopped hardboiled egg, tuna and mayo.

That sounds good.  I haven't had it with the relish and hardboiled egg.  Well, maybe I have, but I never knew to put those in when I made it.  I also add some diced black olives.

I saw her twice in WOMAN OF THE YEAR at the Palace, preview and post-opening, and I found her dreadful, coasting in a really ugly production, couldn't dance, she could barely sing. Thank God Marilyn Cooper showed up to kick the show's ass into gear in Act Two. She and Bernadette Peters gave two of the most lousy Tony winning performances I've ever seen from a "star."  After Lansbury won for in SWEENEY TODD and Rita Moreno for THE RITZ, comparing Bacall and Peters weren't even worth nominating.  Then I saw Raquel Welch, who was much better than Bacall in a show that was always a second-rater, but I also saw her in the role while Bacall was on vacation and she was behaving. Once she officially replaced Bacall, I understand she became difficult and stopped being everyone's friend backstage.

However, I loved APPLAUSE, and I think Bacall was wonderful in films.  I really loved her episode of THE SOPRANOS, and I wish I'd seen her onstage in FORTY CARATS.

What is he / she / it doing?

Strange things happen about the apartment:
  1. occasional voices: the man, the German(?) lady, the whistler
  2. someone's playing at the computer; I'm up now because it came on again and woke me. Perhaps they want to communicate.
  3. some nights I hear a lot of voices talking from a far distance as if I were milling about a large crowd wearing earplugs.
  4. often around 3 or 4 am I'm aware of lots of footsteps and walking about.
  5. I hear things move behind me or in another room.
  6. I see people out of the corner of my eye.

After 35 years here I'm pretty used to it.  I generally tend to speak up and say "do you want something?" or "what's going on?" but some nights it creeps me out.

Apparently, yesterday (8/11) there were false reports of Bacall's death and again this morning.  Both times, her people officially called the reports a hoax.  And then later today, she really died.

Elmore, I hope the ghosts let you have a good night's sleep.

I think a lot of the time, they get to me when there are other things preventing me from sleeping. Several years ago, the computer situation got so bad that I'd unplug it before going to bed. Now it's picking up steam again and happening almost every night, so I may start unplugging it again.  The voices happen at odd times during the day; I'll be reading and suddenly the lady will say something, or the man will. The whistler happened the other morning, Sunday I think.

I forgot that I saw Bacall in Noel Coward's WAITING IN THE WINGS with my friends Simon Jones, and Barney Hughes and his wife Helen Stenborg. I really miss Barney and Helen. I think Rosemary Harris was in it, too; lovely lady, but I can't say we're friends. Even though we spent several weeks at Abbey Road recording in 2001, Rosemary's never sure why she knows me, and after I remind her, she looks at me as if she's too polite to say, "No shit?"
