Well, you've read the notes, the notes knew how to whistle, and now it is time for you to post until the whistling cows come home.

Well, I need to go to sleep now.  At work, a driving simulator is "parked in the parking lot and available to staff to test their driving skills."  I don't know why they did this, but even we non-courier staff can have a go at it.  I'm signed up for the 1:00 pm time slot.  A couple of co-workers yesterday said that they did fairly well.  They both "killed" someone...but don't worry, it's all computer generated visuals and the "car" is set up in a very large van.  No actual people were harmed during the testing of said co-workers' driving tests.  We'll see what happens when I do it.  Wish me luck!

This not sleeping thing seems to be going around HHW. I am due to have a root canal tomorrow morning, but last night the pain was so bad that I couldn't sleep. Fortunately I had some pills left over from my last kidney stone. So I availed myself, and that helped.

Good morning, all! The first thing i must do this morning is deal with this physical therapy referral, and the second is a trip to the post office to send this jury duty letter. Since I'm expecting a dreadful downpour in the city, I hope to get to and from the post office before all hell supposedly breaks loose.

I had forgotten that Crista Moore and Dana Ivey, whom I met at one of Simon Jones' holiday parties, were in Waiting In The Wings as well. I remember two things about the production: going backstage to see Barney and Helen and walking Simon Jones home to Central Park South and Seventh Avenue before jumping onto a bus home.  Simon just got back from playing the doctor in the Angela Lansbury of Blithe Spirit in the London production. His son is one of my goddaughter's best friends, and I haven't seen him since I saw him backstage at Gentlemen Prefer Blondes at Encores!

I'm browsing her credits.  There's so much I haven't seen, it's ridiculous, but I think she's one of those whose presence made everything special.  I particularly love the early films with Bogart, and the SHOOTIST / MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS period.  I was thrilled at the SOPRANOS episode.  I regret I never saw her on stage.

I remember going to FEDORA and liking it enough to return.  I even took my parents to see it while on a visit to L.A. in May 1979.  They liked it and probably would have already gone to it back home (for William Holden if for no other reason), but they hadn't heard of it.

I never forgot it, but I never crossed paths with it again until the post-laserdisc days when I acquired that LD as part of a collection someone gave me.  I watched it then, and much of it was nice, but I found I was kind of "eh" about it in general.  I'm glad to hear the Blu-ray is good, but I can wait until a non-forced-French-subtitle release becomes available.

In my memory it played the Mann Westwood.  I wonder if that's correct, and/or where else it played.

Yes, the rain in Manhattan is supposed to end soon. They just announced a flood watch for Long Island. I hope Vixmom is OK. She has a penchant for letting that flood monster in to her basement during times like this.

After I posted that, the news showed the flooded areas, so I xan only state once again that in most bad weather situations Manhattan is very fortunate. Long may it continue.

Unless, of course, Manhattan is like Mahagonny and we need no typhoon to destroy us since humanity is perfectly capable of accomplishing it alone.

Hello All:

So sad about Lauren Bacall.  I started to appreciate her AMAZING TALENT AND CHARISMA the last few years.

BK, How EXCITING that you had the opportunity to meet her and record her duet with Brent Barrett.

I really enjoyed your story about meeting and working with her.

She was an extraordinary Actor, and when she is on screen with Bogey it is hard to take your eyes off of them both.

SUCH CHARISMA TOGETHER.

May God Bless them both.

Happy Hump Day, all!

BK, I, too, really loved reading your Bacall story. I always love hearing about those diva myths being dispelled, and about how gracious and kind people of her ilk could be. I'm sure she was a terror with people who deserved it and sadly, those are the ones who start the diva rumors.

I got to meet Bob Fosse in an actual private invited group audition. I had no business being there with my early dance skills, but a couple of us, in a moment of emboldened madness, slid our pictures under the door at the Minskoff Studios where he was working on the choreography for "Dancin'". We were both shocked at being called in to audition. I didn't do badly, but I certainly was not up to his standards, and he could not have been kinder, even shaking my hand and thanking me for coming in before I left.

That is very interesting, DR George - should be fun! Can't wait to hear about it.

It was quite interesting.  The set-up was a car steering when with brake and gas pedals and a dashboard, and a very wide three-screen panel that had a basic computer-generated town view through the "windows."  Even though nothing actually moved other than the steering wheel, you got the sensation of moving just from watching the video.  The guy doing the training just had us "drive" down a "road" and avoid people and cars that got in our way.  I did hit and kill a skateboarder, but most people who took the training, did too.  Otherwise, I did pretty well.

The most useful moment was when we had to drive on the freeway and the front right tire blew out.  The steering wheel did actually pull to the right like it really would.  I, naturally, took my foot off the gas, carefully applied the brakes and slowly tried to get to the right side of the road, but the guy said that the best thing is to actually either accelerate a bit or at least not take your foot off the gas so quickly.  That way the car can stabilize, even with the blown tire, which will give you more control to be able stop.  I really would've liked to have gone through that scenario several more times, just to really be able to remember the experience.

Topic of the Day:  I think I've only seen "How to Marry a Millionaire." :-\

Then you must rent from your library all the films she did with Bogart. Some DVD of the The Big Sleep (I think) have an alternate version. Highly recommend them.

I did look!  But one of the titles that came up when searching her name was "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale."  According to the bibliographic record in the library catalog, it features the voices of Christopher Plummer, Lauren Bacall and Jason Alexander.  Here's a description of the movie itself:

Quote
Barbie stars as Merliah, a surfing champion from Malibu. One minute she's a normal teenager and the next she learns a shocking family secret: she's a mermaid. Merliah and her dolphin friend Zuma set off on an undersea adventure to rescue her mother, the queen of Oceana. With help from her new mermaid friends, Merliah saves the ocean kingdom. In the end, she discovers what makes you different can also be your greatest strength.

HOWEVER, Christopher Plummer, Lauren Bacall and Jason Alexander have NOTHING to do with this movie.  Somehow, their names accidentally got added, so the record needs to be updated.  And since I can do it myself, I will. ;)

Back from a mile-and-a-half jog.  Figured out one of the two songs I'm still missing and before the evening is done I shall figure out the other.  The song I figured out means we're doing two songs from one show, but I have a long story to tell about the show, its star and me and I don't want to tell it with the first of the two songs - so I'll just give a history lesson for that one, and then tell the personal story ahead of the second song, the one I thought of tonight.  The final song to be chosen will be a ballad for Evan Harris.  Happy to listen to suggestions - should be a song I've recorded at some point or one with a personal connection - one thing I was thinking of was The World's a Toy Balloon from Flahooley put together with Paper Moon.  I thought that would be really sweet.
