TOD:

I think that Tennessee Williams must have been my first exposure to homosexuality in literature and films, with plays like CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER.  I directed productions of both of those in Seattle.

Good morning, all! I'm happy to hear that the tempest on Long Island yesterday did not prevent DR Ben's and Anthony's departure this morning.

I will shortly head down to Toyland and schlep home some books and programs or CDs. I will spend some of the weekend putting the CDs back to their original home and wrestling books and the ladder. I need about 18 more feet of bookcases.

Yesterday, I had meant to finish up a Moross project and take a serious look at the existing materials for the Rodgers & Hart show Chee-Chee, but the day got eaten up with more New World Records Roberta requests - a promo blurb, photo decisions, and a discussion of the unreleased  2001-2002 McGlinn recordings of Kern and Herbert and the foundation that funded them. So, my curiosity running, I contacted the foundation and had a short spurt of messaging with the person now on that project. Who knows?

DR vixmom, I am happy to know you are okay, but I'm very sorry you have to deal again with a flooded basement and roads.

I think that's my news. More from Toyland.

The first book I read without knowledge that it had it was the novel "The Man Who Folded Himself".

Loved the notes today. I remember seeing "Polyester" in Odorama, in which we had scratch-and-sniff cards. You scratched the card whenever a number appeared on the screen. With it being a John Waters movie, some of the odors were less than pleasant.

If I recall correctly, I would say the TV movie "That Certain Summer" was probably the first time I remember gay characters actually being gay, as opposed to the hinted-at, always swishy Franklin Pangborn types.

Favorite books would include "The Color Purple," "Maurice," "Death in Venice" and "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil."

And a late one it is!  Got up around my usual time, fed some critters, and crawled right back into bed without so much as a how-de-do ..... and I'm two hours of sleep better for it.  I needed that.

And now:  Coffee and cheese danish!

I'm thrilled to hear about the participation on HOLIDAY IN SPAIN taking shape.  I was excited about that from the first mention of it on the HTF many moons ago, and I immediately jumped for the SCENT OF MYSTERY soundtrack.

BK is so fortunate to have been in one of the few audiences for that film and to have grabbed the book and poster and all.  It's just so sad that nothing exists of the original film as first released.  As for the Blu-ray, I love all of Strohmaier's releases.  They're so obviously a product of love for the times and the material -- as are BK's and only a select handful of other people's -- and there is all the more reason to look forward to this one.

POLYESTER is the first (only?) smelly film I've been to, and yes, a couple of the odors were a bit much, if not perfectly authentic.

I have the Criterion laserdisc with the full size replica of the original scratch and sniff card, and it still works just fine!

I do love the scene where Divine and Edith sit down to commiserate about men over a slice of cake. The way Divine slices it is to cut the cake in half and go to town.

In Walt Disney World there's a "live" Stitch attraction that's very amusing -- with a device in each seat's headrest that works to perfection, both in the odors themselves and the instantaneous clearing of those odors.

I have a newfound fondness for Waters' films, and Divine is a joy to watch.  But man, there are moments in those early pre-POLYESTER ones that can be a challenge.  Which, of course, is exactly what he wanted them to be.

I think we can all be grateful that PINK FLAMINGOS pre-dated his implementation of scratch-and-sniff technology.

Name was not recognizeable to me, however looking at his credits on IMDB he seems to have appeared in every television show ever made...and multiple times! His face does seem familiar.

TOD:  I think the first film I saw that had homosexuality attached to it was "Lust For Life" when it played on Saturday Night at the Movies (a re-run) during the summer of 1964.  I don't know how or why I missed it when it had its first airing. After my mother asked what I planned to do that evening while she and my father were out dining/dancing, I said I planned on watching that film.  Her reaction was, "That's about a hah-mo-sexual".  I had no idea, nor did I get any such idea, from the film that any homosexuality was alluded to.  But I was fascinated nonetheless.

The bus ride home was hell: these new buses are not designed for old coots on walkers, and no one's enforcing the law that the damned things have to fold up on the bus fr aisle access.  So we had two old ladies and one old man blocking the front entrance to the bus with them.

At least two of the walkers folded up, but the old bitch whose walker did not was rude and nasty to everyone trying to help her - snapping at them, calling them fools, just being charming as hell - and I thought, lady, when you traded in your broom for that walker, didn't the agent advise you about the ones that fold up?

So, I'm home. What is it with people you do not know sending FB friend requests and offering no explanation as to why they sent it?

I am house-sitting for the assistant director of my agency in the County of Alameda.  She lives in the Oakland hills in a home built in the 1930s.  It's huge, is on three levels, is rambling, etc.  I have two cats and three chickens to care for.  My first day started after work yesterday.   So many stairs...up to the bedroom, down to the living area where the dining room and main kitchen are, and then down again to the TV room and second kitchen where the cats are fed.  There is a side door on the second (albeit the "street") level with some steep steps going to a door out of which I must trod to reach the chickens...down three more flights of steps to the tiered-off garden and chicken coop area.  Actually, there is a coop and henhouse.  And then there is a fenced-in exercise area.  I was given freedom from actually herding them into the exercise area, but I thought "what the heck"!  I swear, chickens are really odd.  And I chased one chicken all over the garden area.  I was up and down those steps several times before tackling each chicken one at a time and putting them back into the coop.  I got more exercise yesterday than I normally get in a month.  Seriously.

I slept VERY WELL last night on a wonderfully firm mattress in the "unused" master bedroom (the owner of the house says it's too large for her tastes and she uses an adjoining, small room).  Her "roommate" has a bedroom on the 1st level (down where the cats hang out).

Edith's cousin's funeral was one of the earliest mentions that I can recall, and one that I knew what it meant.

I also remember "Making Love" with Michael Ontkean and Harry Hamlin (which I loved), and "A Different Story" with Perry King and Meg Foster, which I HATED...mainly because the gay man and the lesbian fell in love with each other...how could they do that??  I don't know how I'd feel about it now, though. ::)

Here we are in Richfield, OH. It's the same hotel we stayed in last November on our road trip to Minnesota. It's a nice place, with a pool, free breakfast, free Internet and it puts us just a few hours away from our final destination tomorrow.

Sing, glad the root canal went well. They don't bother me so much. Anthony says I have a high tolerance for pain. I guess I do since I had a tooth extracted in June and didn't need pain pills or any kind of meds afterward. I'm fully recovered from that and in September the work will begin to fix that tooth and the surrounding two teeth which also need work. Thanks to NYU School of Dentistry for low-cost dental procedures, otherwise I would be paying boatloads of money!

Richfield, btw, is near Cleveland. Ginny and Richard would know where it is. It's nowhere G&R so we can't drop in for an unannounced visit.

TOD:  I can't remember the earliest, but I know that I saw Merchant & Ivory's Maurice about 8 times in the theater.

I bought the DVD from Australia on eBay.  At the time, it wasn't available for US DVD players, but I had just gotten a region-code-free player, so the Region 4 DVD was watchable. :D

Thursday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I were up and out early (for us) for him to have X-rays and an EMG to find the cause of the numbness and tingling he's been having in his right hand.  The doctor who performed the EMG suspects carpal tunnel syndrome and we're awaiting confirmation from our family doctor.  Richard's fine and is now in the backyard supervising the removal of yet another tree  :-\

TOD:  The first I recall was on ALL IN THE FAMILY.
I also remember ..."A Different Story" with Perry King and Meg Foster, which I HATED...mainly because the gay man and the lesbian fell in love with each other...how could they do that??  I don't know how I'd feel about it now, though. ::)

I think you'd still hate it.  Perry King and Meg Foster gave good performances...certainly attractive people.  BUT, the message I got from it was that if you give the opposite sex a chance (i.e. get to know the opposite sex), you, TOO, will have a loving, full-bodied heterosexual experience.

I know such things are possible, although not probable.   The most that would happen "today" is that they'd agree to have a child together and raise it together, although retaining their affinity for same-sex partners.

Larry, hope something good comes out of the messaging!!

Thanks, DR George!  I also had this morning an interesting phone conversation with the dean of the School of Fine Arts at Miami University about some possibilities.

A residency, perhaps?

Yesterday was my parents' 59th wedding anniversary

we took a break from the basement bailing to go to dinner at the Miller's Ale House down the road as they have a steamed lobster special on Wednesday's  and that is my folks' favorite (the roads in my neck of the woods were clear by last night)

The meal was fun and good and then I came back to more basement cleaning

Happy (belated) Anniversary to your parents, Vixmom!

Happy belated anniversary wishes from me, too. My folks have been married for 59 years, too.

And I'm going out next Saturday to celebrate the 61st anniversary of some friends.

Love Meg Foster, but I did hate that movie. Her performance, though, as Hester Prynne in a PBS version of "The Scarlet Letter" was magnificent.

When I had carpal tunnel syndrome around 1983, i wore a wrist brace and had steroid injections,

When I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel, I had to take Celebrex, which made me spacier and flattened my vision. I almost ran a red light because the one beyond the light I was at had turned green. No depth perception at all. And it didn't help.

So I went to a hospital-related massage therapy place. The woman who ran it gave me the deepest tissue massage imaginable on the back of my neck. I was in intense pain for three days and slept most of the time. When the pain went, so did the carpal tunnel.

Larry, hope something good comes out of the messaging!!

Thanks, DR George!  I also had this morning an interesting phone conversation with the dean of the School of Fine Arts at Miami University about some possibilities.

VIBES FOR NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR DR ELMORE~~~~~~~~

we do not--- all water removal is done with a wet dry vac which I empty into the washer

Just spent the last 90 minutes interviewing Luca Della Casa. Now he's feeding me. There are worse things in life.

Color me jealous...he's cute

Driving home this evening NPR was running some program I was only half listening to, something about speakers... what caught my ear was the host saying something baout how  "big speakers' were once the sign of a serious music lover and the guest said a serious music lover  now whoudl be know  by his turntable and vinyl records for the most full and satisfying sound and I thought of Chas

I'm jealous too, although I have no idea what he looks like -- but I heard he cooks real purty

Vixdad feels it is not practicable for the type of leakage problem we have

That's because Vixdad is not the one mopping it up with towels.

Luca is incapable of taking a bad picture. This  is not one of the best that I got of him.

The new Sherlock Holmes with Benedict Cumberbatch has arrived from the library. Finally get to see what BK was raving about when he watched them. The first episode is spectacular.

I still say Benedict Cumberbatch sounds like a character from Harry Potter.

Tonight is the finale of "Last Comic Standing."  There have been some very good comics this season.  I have an idea of who I think will probably win, but actually, I would prefer either of the other two to win.  The one guy is very good...they're all very good...but I just like the other two a little better.  We'll see how it all ends up!

Well, the guy who I thought would win, did.  He was good, but so were the other two.  Anyway, just by being on the show, they got some good exposure and it'll certainly help their careers...even the people who were eliminated earlier in the season.  There were a lot of good comics (fortunately, not a lot of not-so-good comics).

I guess maybe I'll take a shower even though I had one this morning - I really feel better showering after I've jogged.  I do think this week I have finally begun to lose the weight I gained - it's taken a really long time to kick in this go-round - I've been a very good boy for three weeks, but this week is the first time I am feeling it and when my pants have finally started to feel even a little less tight.

First time I noticed homosexuality…. Paul Lynd, he just didn't seem like other men on TV, he was so animated and gesticulating.  My mother and grandmother would always editorialize about whoever was on TV, so I figured that "boychick" meant gay.    Rock Hudson was a boy chick, I heard Cary Grant swung both ways.  A confirmed bachelor was suspect.   Then I started drawing conclusions --- that Max in "The Sound of Music" was probably gay too.
Of course, I thought Tiny Tim must be queer because he was just so weird.  But in fact he was quite straight.

Favorite films and scenes:   Laurence Olivier's scene  in "Spartacus" dealing with "oysters and snails" --- it was so pregnant with innuendo, but you couldn't actually SAY that Olivier was trying to seduce Tony Curtis.  The sensuality went over my head as a child, but as a young adult, it dawned on me.
Other films:   The Crying Game, Death in Venice, The Bird Carge (first saw the original La Cage aux Folles), and of course, the gay characters in "The Producers".
In literature I was always fascinated by the Truman Capote, Oscar Wilde, and their works.
I was also an avid reader of Armistead Maupin, the outrageously gay columnist who wrote San Francisco's "Tales of the City".
Thirty odd years ago gays in film and TV especially were clownish caricatures, sidekicks, and rarely more than 2 dimensional players cast comedically.
thank the gay rights movement, and social evolution for today's gay characters in TV, film and theatre who may be seen as fully realized and leading character,  not only as people we laugh with(at).
