I must rush to Toyland before the weather gets really bad and the downpour becomes torrential. With my luck these days, it should happen en route.

Nothing new to report.

Good morning, all.

Back to the grind tonight, and I am taking very good care of myself so as not to come down with a cold.  I was doing work around the house yesterday and last night I felt the kind of tiredness that I know has made me susceptible in the past.  So, just taking it real easy.

Last Saturday, before the show, the Executive Committee had a preliminary meeting about starting to accept credit cards at the theatre....using one of those Square Readers.

There was a lot of discussion.  The President had included his wife since she is our bookkeeper.

I asked her if it was something she wanted us to do, since it would mean some extra work for her, and she said yes.  I personally think it's TOO expensive for us....because we would then have to add a service charge which I think people would HATE.

And there was much discussion about how to keep track of purchases if more than one thing was purchased....i.e. a season ticket and a donation OR a ticket and a box of popcorn....all of those things are separate line items.

ANYWAY - day before yesterday the president sent an email to members of the Executive Board saying just forget the whole thing because we were not cooperative and resistant to change and would do nothing to help Brenda separate the purchased items and he was going to tell the board the EC argued too much, so forget it.

I emailed back and said, I thought that was just a first discussion and we were going to talk about it more.

No response.....which is fine.  I would just as soon NOT take cards....right now we take telephone reservations and people pay when they get their tickets.  Now and then somebody doesn't show up....maybe 4 tickets for the run of the show.  If they have to pay for the tickets on the phone by card - which takes a lot of time - I would say that our reservations will drop considerably...although our walk in business might pick up.

Very interesting, DR Jrand64.

For years, all of the theaters around here did the telephone verbal reservation thing, but I believe there are only one or two in the region who still have that.  I didn't like the change at first myself, because that's just the way I am -- but for those early adopters of it, I think it all smoothed out pretty quickly, and I'm sure none of them are looking back now.

Of course, I personally have no idea of how it all works, and how smoothly it goes probably depends a great deal on which vendor you choose.  (Duh.)  They use Vendini at the theater where AVE Q is playing, and it all seems to be very professional.  But what do I know?  Not much!  :)
Title: Re: A WHOLE LOT OF HEAVEN
Post by: ChasSmith on September 25, 2014, 07:40:30 AM
What's most shocking to me is how regional theater prices have skyrocketed in the past two decades that I've been active in it.  In the nineties, a play was, say, $10 and a musical was $15.  Which hardly seems possible.  Now it's at least double that.

So, maybe doubling that in twenty years isn't too out of line with other things, but it sure seemed like it as we saw those numbers go up and up quite rapidly over the course of several years.
Title: Re: A WHOLE LOT OF HEAVEN
Post by: ChasSmith on September 25, 2014, 07:42:37 AM
And then there's the professional level pricing.  Okay, just forget I said anything.     :)

They were looking at a mobile reader device for the Iphone or Ipad....and the more I read about it, the less I like it....

So I am glad someone had a fit and postponed the whole thing.

Our tickets are $10 across the board.....so we're doing okay.

DR JOHN G I had a nightmare experience with Yahoo Mail.  One day my password stopped working.....and I spent DAYS with their help people - they kept saying I had to verify my identity....and I even sent a copy of my DRIVER'S LICENSE to them....but they still wouldn't verify me....

So I dropped them....don't use it anymore...and I didn't open a new account, which they wanted me to do, because they wouldn't do it WITHOUT my mobile telephone number.

So I don't even use their browser anymore.

Jack, do you sell tickets on-line at all?  Theater Artists Olympia has been using www.brownpapertickets.com for several years and it's VERY easy...AND free for us.  The people who want to buy on-line have to pay a service charge, but this wouldn't replace your current ticketing practice, just augment it.  We just get a list of the people's names for will-call and that's it (there are other ticket printing/mailing options).  We get a check after every week that we have an event.  Here's the listing for TAO's "Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged) [revised]":  http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/852022

It's another option for those who want to guarantee that they get a seat.  And since it's free for you to set up an account and use the service, you could try it out and see how well it works...or if anyone uses it at all.  If not, you don't lose any money.

Just a thought.

The Miracle Worker
Experiment in Terror
The Music Man
Gypsy
Cape Fear
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane

The Days of Wine and Roses
Birdman of Alcatraz
Ride the High Country
That Touch of Mink
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Manchurian Candidate
Sweet Bird of Youth
Dr. No
Lolita
Taras Bulba
Billy Budd
Day of the Triffids
In Search of the Castaways
My Geisha

No secret that my favorite movie year is 1962 - a few of that year's films:

To Kill a Mockingbird
Lawrence of Arabia
Lolita
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Manchurian Candidate
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
The Miracle Worker
The Music Man
Birdman of Alcatraz
Lonely are the Brave
Days of Wine and Roses
The Trial
Ride the High Country
Knife in the Water
L'Eclisse
Long Day's Journey Into Night
Cleo from 5 to 7
Requiem for a Heavyweight
The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner
The Counterfeit Traitor
David and Lisa
Light in the Piazza
Sundays and Cybele

and the amazing list also contains films that I'm also very fond of, including: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, How the West Was Won, All Fall Down, Gypsy, The Brain that Wouldn't Die, Sanjuro, Billy Rose's Jumbo, Dr. No, The Longest Day, Cape Fear, Mutiny on the Bounty, Hatari, Carnival of Souls, The Exterminating Angel, Bachelor Flat, That Touch of Mink, Advise and Consent, State Fair, Freud, A Kind of Loving, Damn the Defiant, Two for the Seesaw, Pressure Point, Two Weeks in Another Town, Experiment in Terror, Who's Got the Action?, A Girl Named Tamiko… and I could go on.

And it's amazing how many soundtracks from 1962 have been issued by Kritzerland.

For Broadway musicals, I'll choose 1964 - some huge hit shows, some shows I love despite not being huge hits, and can you imagine a season today producing this many musicals, several of such high quality?  Here they are - I'll start with the biggies:

Fiddler on the Roof
Hello, Dolly!
Funny Girl

and continue with

High Spirits
Anyone Can Whistle
Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd
Golden Boy

and continue with

I Had a Ball
Bajour!
Ben Franklin in Paris
Fade Out - Fade In

and there were four or five others I simply don't know anything about.

I am continually discovering movies to love, in every year, every decade, all the way to early silents.

But I've always gone with 1962 on this type of question, because those are the movies that speak to me, now and forever.  They're in my bloodstream.  That crop is representative of everything I've ever loved in films.

Hello, everyone.

A very tired DR Jeanne reporting in. I find that when I have things I MUST do--appointments and such--my body understands and musters the energy. But when I have a day like today, flexible, with only should-do or would-like-to-do stuff, my body will say, "No way!" It lets me know that it's in charge. In other words, I think several months of stress have caught up with me and I'm just really worn out.

DR Chas, I did the Medicare drill last spring. You've probably been inundated with ads for various health plans. I also received flyers for a couple insurance agents who specialize in helping consumers find the right plan for them. The first one I called was a pushy, opinionated jerk, IMHO, and I never called back. The second one wasn't that way at all and I was happy to have his help. I still spent a full month reviewing plans. There's a lot to consider, but the right plan can save you a lot of money. I was surprised to find that the Medicare Advantage plans offer very good value.

Good luck with this!

That would be fascinating to hear!   The tutorial, I mean, not the beating up.  But hey, maybe that, too!

I'm glad that Oregon is getting much-needed rain. California is not, but at least someone's getting it.

We are thrilled to see a little green on our lawn today.  From now on we will give it short drinks in-between the rains and hope by spring it will be all green again.

I woke up to the very strange and alien sound of rain this morning.  It apparently started in the wee hours and continued until abotu 7:30 a.m.  It was SO good to see rain on the trees and road.  We haven't had rain since late April.

Larry, have you ever thought about teaching orchestrating in a college?  When I was going to college to be a choir teacher (which, fortunately for everyone, didn't happen), I had to take an orchestrating class.  The guy just basically read the book and it wasn't a very good experience for many of the students who took that class, including me.  Anyway, I'm sure that you'd be excellent at it.  You're actually in the business...and you love doing it.

Just a thought. :)

I, too, found the new judge situation interesting. Cilla, I suspect your instincts are correct about tiring of the restrictions in a few years, had you gotten the position. Vibes that Mynra proves to be a gem and the next chapter of your law practice is very fulfilling.

Thanks so much.  It's only day 4 and today I asked Myrna to see how much notice her other job needed for her to quit and work for me full time.  (She wants to do that)   She's still got a ton to learn, but with only 4 hours a day at my office, there just isn't enough time to really learn much.   I insisted that she find out how much notice they want as I don't want to do to someone else what was done to me

DR vixmom, since you didn't like my comment about that medicare commercial with that insincerely perky actress asking her husband if he did his pushups, I will tell you one commercial I love and that makes me laugh every time I see it: State Farm Insurance, where the jealous wife catches her husband on the phone at 3am talking to Jake at State Farm, and she grabs the phone and says "what are you wearing, Jake at State Farm?" and Jake answers "Uh . . .khakis."

And the wife says to her husband, "She sounds hideous," and her husband responds with something like, "Yeah, well she's a guy."

I just laugh; its so wonderful and absurd.

I was supposed to make a trip to visit a client in prison tomorrow.  It's about 3 1/2- 4 hours one way.  I was reviewing the website and noticed that I can set up a 25 minute unmonitored unrecorded legal call at this facility with 5 days notice.   So, I'm not going.  I know my client will be disappointed because she doesn't have a lot of visitors but it's just too far and I'm too tired. I've been there a couple times so she knows me, but this is a court appointment and I'm not paid for travel time, so, at some point I have to draw the line.  The cats were pleased

In about forty minutes or so I shall be on my way for the final evening of mixing.  Most of what we're doing tonight is the smaller band - only a couple or maybe even one full - then it's just strings and a reed or two, so those mixes are much simpler to do.

Well, the place was packed, they loved it all, but they paid what they wanted and they got what they paid for:  the worst brain-freeze train wreck by a soprano in recent history.  :)

I have never in my life been so at a loss to know what to do.  It wasn't pretty.  We tried a couple of things then finally just went on, and about three phrases later she joined the party.

Same here -- creepy!  For some reason, reminds of the tv series Streets of San Francisco -- the episode with John Davidson!

I may put up one or two tracks in the next week or so, just as a little tease.

I know the feeling -- stress is a bugger!  Hope you can de-stress as the weekend is almost upon us!

Muskegeon- Norton Shores - my best friend's (since we were 14) eldest daughter (my birthday twin- by design!) is getting married

I will be flying into Chicago - meeting with clients on Thursday and Friday morning and then driving to Michigan for  rehearsal dinner on Friday night, then wedding on Saturday , then I drive back to Chicago for a 6 PM flight home

A flight and road trip -- best of both worlds!

Had a lovely evening -- took the Dear Nephew out for his Birthday.   Plus the Dear Niece celebrated her 4th wedding anniversary!   Grandma Mary would be so proud of her grandkids, Tyler 26 & Kelsey 28 -- it's amazing how 13 years has flown by so quickly.

Mix is finished, unless I listen and hear anything I want to finesse, but I think we really got it all and it just sounds great.  I made a couple more vocal fixes in the comps, Lanny did his thing and is very happy and happy this is in the can.

Great news, BK!

Happy Birthday to the Dear Nephew and Happy Anniversary to the Dear Niece!!

The Niece, Kelsey is General Manager for a performing arts center.  The Nephew, Tyler will help his "big" sister on event nights -- selling merch, bartender, etc.  Here's Tyler chilling during showtime!

Plus a photo of Dear Niece, Kelsey with her Hubby, Thomas Jr (TJ) -- they visited friends in Houston for a long weekend and caught an Astros game.  Dear TJ -- bummer to be follicly challenged at such a young age.  He's just a year older than Niece.
