Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written on a Thursday and spoke of Cybele, and now it is time for you to post until the Thursday cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: DEMESNE!
-
First, yet again.
But it's not Good Morning just yet, for it is only a quarter past five and I should be going back to sleep forthwith.
-
GOOD MORNING TO ALL
-
TOD
I can't remember which film it was but I did see La Cage Aux Folles on home video. It gave you the option to watch it with English subtitles or in the English dub version. (Victor Garber was Albin and Dick Latessa was Renaldo)
For the fun of it I watched it in the English dubbed and English subtitles and they were two different translations of the dialogue!
-
TOD. It was probably Three Penny Opera at the Huntington Arts Cinema. The 2nd was probably LaCage Aux Folles. I much preferred the subtitled version I didn't care for the voices in the dubbed version
-
Michael any news? Vibes for you my friend!
-
And now I must start my day I won't be back for some time as I will be at the theatre tonight. We'll movie theatre watching the Tim rice from here to eternity. I have heard. Nothing of the score nor read any reviews so it shall all be a surprise. The Vixter will be joining me
-
Vibes for all what needs. 'Em and all what wants 'em

-
Good morning, all.
I think. I still need more sleep.
But I'm drinking a cup of coffee now, so we'll see.
-
I was mistaken about the FROM HERE TO ETERNITY showing -- I thought it was the film, but saw last night that it's the Tim Rice musical (?). I'll pass on that, myself, this time, and shall look forward to vixmom's comments.
-
TOD:
I'd think this would be a little easier to pin down -- watching a foreign film with subtitles for the first time -- but I'm not positive because I don't recall it ever seeming unnatural or odd to me. But it's even harder to think of what my first foreign film, period, might be. Anyhoo...
My first one in English might be HEAVENS ABOVE! (1963) with Peter Sellers, which played at the then-newly opened Sunrise Cinemas I & II, a theater that was to become one of the most loved movie venues of my teenage years.
My first foreign film with subtitles is likely Bergman's THE MAGICIAN, seen on 16mm during my college years. That would have been around 1970, which seems a little late in my life to be getting exposed to subtitled films, but I'm at a loss to come up with anything earlier. I'll have to keep thinking about this.
-
It sure seems like a Thursday.
-
You know, it also looks like one. And I don't particularly like what I'm seeing.
-
Good morning !
-
Good morning, all! I got home from ON THE TOWN around 1:15, had a bit of food to take with my meds and went to bed. I'm a bit groggy this morning, but I am still smiling over how wonderful so much of the show is. The 29-piece orchestra sounds fantastic, although a couple of tempos I feel may be a bit fast for the lyrics to settle, and one cast member everyone loves leaves me cold. Still, my criticisms are nitpicking, because the production has so many wonderful things and it's so much better than the last revival in direction and choreography. I loved Michael Rupert as Judge Pitkin W. Bridgework.
So, I've got an errand at 1:00, my doctor at 3:15, and I think Josh and Jeremy Clayton are stopping by after their violin lesson so I can give Jeremy a copy of the ROBERTA CDs.
I finally listened to the sound clips. I think they sound fantastic, and I hope it sells well.
-
TOD:
Although there are certain foreign films that I do like, I am really not a big fan of movies where I have to read subtitles.
I think that the first foreign film I saw was WILD STRAWBERRIES.
I was in my first or second years of college and was going through a short phase of American movies stink and the only good movies are foreign. Then, I saw LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD, which looked (to me) like the editor had tossed all the pieces of film up into the air, then put them back together in whichever order he pulled them out of the pile. That film turned me off of foreign films for quite awhile.
Yet, as I said, there are films that I really do like. I just have to be in the mood to read.
-
Fact or fiction?
Perhaps a bit of both....

Thursday morning greetings! Today I have to schedule a haircut and pick up and deliver some prescriptions for Mom. Also some boring, but necessary, AAUW admin work.

Good Morning -- Wishing Everyone a Fine Day!
As usual, don't have time to chat in the mornings -- still rushing to get ready for the office!
Breathe -- there will be no mice sightings this morning! :D

Everyone say this aloud in their best Long Island accent! :)

I hope it sells well.
Yes.

So, if you get a ticket confirmation from Delta, as I just did, or Air France, do not open it.

I have to plan my trek to 520 Eighth Avenue.

DR Bway the mouse didn't just walk up to me and climb up my arm, so relax a bit ;)
It was in a kitchen drawer munching on a wooden spoon at the same time I happened to reach in and pull the spoon out of the drawer. I was only an extension of the spoon and I assure you it was equally as frightened as I was.
We had an invasion of mice and none of them came close enough to climbing up us intentionally even when we saw them walking around the house. ;D

TOD:
I think the first subtitled film I saw was KNIFE IN THE WATER which aired on our local PBS station when I was in 7th grade.

No, but I play one on TV. 8)

THE REWARD did get some kind of release. I believe I saw it at one of the two drive-in theaters in my small home town in Western Pennsylvania. I saw it not because of the director but because of the female lead, Yvette Mimieux, whose films I devoutly watched ever since discovering her in THE TIME MACHINE. I also finally saw PICASSO SUMMER on late night TV in Los Angeles at some point. It was probably early 1980s when I first had a VCR machine to tape it because I never stayed up late at night to watch TV. Again it was because of Ms. Mimieux. Now I will have to search out THURSDAYS AND CYBELE.

Well I won $500 on a lottery ticket, so I put most of it away to pay for a trip two of my sisters and I are planning for later this month.....I also want to buy a little this and that....so there you are.
-
Congratulations, DR Jrand64! It is nice when good things happen to good people.
A little bit o' this-a and a little bit o' that-a. :)
-
I'm up, I'm up - somehow I think I got about eight hours of sleep finally.
-
My first subtitled film was "The Garden of the Finzi-Continis". (Or, was it? Maybe it was dubbed).
Seems like "Day for Night" was subttitled, though, so maybe that was my first.

Congrats, Jack!! I've never won that much before...of course, I don't buy lottery tickets, so there you have it. ;)
-
That is wonderful, Jack! Enjoy every cent of it!

For the fun of it I watched it in the English dubbed and English subtitles and they were two different translations of the dialogue!
When I saw "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," you could tell that what they were saying in the dubbed version was very specifically translated so that they looked like they were actually speaking English. I really thought that they had filmed it twice...one in the native Chinese and once in English. It was so well done. The subtitles, of course, didn't have to match the lip movements so they could be a much more literal translation.

I'm going tonight, too...here in Olympia, of course. Right now, I'm listening to the 2-CD set, which is only 66-minutes long! I ripped MP3s to my computer and put them in one folder as if it were one disc...which it essentially is.
-
In an interesting twist of fate, he made it through the whole program and ended up getting bonded with a blind organist and poet.
That's sweet! And great pictures of the dog!

Well, this is very interesting...Laura, have you heard about this recent discovery?

Or they were matched intentionally knowing there was music in your home.

Good for you! I'm lucky if I win $5.00.
-
And I am home from all adventures.
-
Back from a quick lunch of a cup of chicken soup and chicken tenders. I'm still popping Airborne and sucking down Coldeez, just for protection.

Perhaps, DR Jane!

It is a little cooler here but sunny. I'm happy. I should be outside picking up acorns but my hair is wet.

Post Deleted!

I remember many dubbed foreign fillms, and some not. I'm sure "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" was not my first one with subtitles, I just can't remember any other ones prior to it.

A post deleted nevertheless still carries us forward toward the next page turn.

Well, I'm off now to see the filmed live version of the new Tim Rice musical, From Here To Eternity. Hopefully, I won't hate it. ::)
;)
Be back later!

Update:
Right now it looks like I will NOT be thyroid removed. Waiting for the final results from all the blood test, but the surgeon at this time does not think it will be necessary to have it operated on. So it might be just be (more) medication I will have to take.
-
Update #2.
Had (yet another) MRI on my knee. The problems seems to be the area above the tear in my meniscus. Something has to be done (operation) because I am in constant pain. Waiting to hear what results are.
-
Been listening to AND THE WORLD GOES ROUND. Really really enjoying it. What a great team they were. Recommend it to all.
BTW
BK who wrote the updated lyrics for The Grass is Always Greener?

I believe I've mentioned this before, that twice Keith was scheduled for surgery for this & canceled. Instead he began exercising and losing weight and the pain slowly subsided as he became fit. He too was in great pain and could barely walk.
Maybe, if nothing new is found, you can try another approach before surgery.

hate it that is

in fact we hated it so much that we left before it even got to the intermission

we found the songs unmemorable

the story telling incomprehensible

EXCELLENT NEWS!! I am so pleased to hear this Mike!
-
Jane, didn't see it - am I even a member of that group?
-
Had a much smoother rehearsal today - I think this show will be a ton of fun.
-
What's not a ton of fun is page four. Really?
-
And just barely page four at that.

Went with the Staitmans to Casa Vega where I had a good burrito.
-
Congratulations Jack, I am so happy to hear of your windfall!
-
Sorry I have been E&T for most of the day.
Congratulations, JRand. That is most wonderful.
-
I came home tonight to find a copy of Roberta in the mail today. Two double-discs of delight in two days. That's hard to believe. But most welcome.
-
Elmore I am happy to hear about your enjoyable trip to On The Town
-
It has been a long day. The food conference was really informative and full of great recipes/ideas/food trends.
A coconut chia pudding was among the more interesting (and vegan) dishes, but corned beef brisket stew with sofrito jam may have been a favorite. Don't know how Latin corned beef is, but since it's not Irish, either, it doesn't matter.
And of the dishes demonstrated that we didn't get to try, a crispy corn quesadilla with with rajas and tomatillo salsa sounds best.
-
While there, I got a private tour of the new Kimpton Hotel's staging area. The hotel itself is under construction, but they have sample rooms set up and all of the dishware, etc. The chef is excellent, so I'm sure it will be a real pleasure. What I found interesting is that furnishings are a mix of nostalgic and modern. They are finding antiques that are not necessarily perfect and there are no plans to restore them.
-
TOD:
I think the first foreign film I saw was Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast. It was on the afternoon movie and I was haunted by the image of the arms that came through the walls and held the candelabras. I didn't mind the subtitles then and I don't think I ever have. I do hate dubbed movies.
-
Tagline of an email I received today:
BK is turning 2... Let's party!
(It's referring to a bar named the Brooklynite.)
-
and the choreography was, while energetic.... weird
But how did you truly feel, Vixmom?
-
Elmore I am happy to hear about your enjoyable trip to On The Town
I am, too. I really hope this revival succeeds.
-
I was so disappointed - I had really been looking forward to seeing this
-
Where or where, is everyone??
-
and the choreography was, while energetic.... weird
But how did you truly feel, Vixmom?
And I may still go see it Tuesday.
-
I was so disappointed - I had really been looking forward to seeing this
I am so sorry.
-
There were only 2 other people in the theatre - each alone and they both came in just as the show was starting and sat towards the front so we were wondering if they were employees and we were the only two paying patrons
-
I wonder what great book or film will attempt to become the next "classic" musical?
-
maybe it gets better as ot goes on and we would have enjoyed it more as it went along so we may not have given it a fair chance ....
-
I never saw the movie- maybe if I had seen that first I would have felt differently
-
So many attempts; so few victories!

Where or where, is everyone??
Movies?

your mileage may vary ;D

G'night!
-
I am not feeling well..........
I am sorry to hear that. I hope you're over whatever it is quickly.
-
Listening to music, exhausted, trying to keep my voice rested, but had to have a telephonic conversation.
-
WUSSBURGERS have overtaken us!!!
-
Where in tarnation IS everyone?
-
This is clearly nauseating.
-
Nauseating this is clearly.

I'll take a shower shortly and shortly I shall take a shower.

Well, I can agree with most of what you said but overall for some reason, I didn't hate it.

The show was kind of weird, the music was pretty repetitive, but maybe because most of the guys were very nice to look at, I could tolerate it.
