Well, you've read the notes, you know about the notes, the notes know about you, and now it is time to post until the knowing cows come home.  Go know.

I don't have enough CDs to call it a collection. Maybe 100 or 150. I really have no idea.
My DVD stash is pathetic. I won't even put a number on it.
I'm suddenly very tired. To bed. I'll catch up on yesterday's posts today. Or later if I can't sleep.

As for my CDs, I have over 1000 recordings that are just musicals!  I used to have all my recordings listed in an Excel spread sheet, but it's no more.  I'll have to recreate it.  I had almost 1,300 lines in the spreadsheet...of course, that included cross-references for such things as listing foreign language recordings in both the foreign language title and the English title and two listings for CDs with two titles on them, such as Maltby and Shire's Cyrano and The Grand Tour (not to be confused with Jerry Herman's The Grand Tour).

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Well, my sugar rush is starting to turn into a post-sugar rush headache... ugh... Ah, well... Live and learn... And do it again anyway.  :)

As for the T-o-D:

DVDs - Maybe around 50.  Not really that many.  The collection is all over the place.  Classics, Disney, Music Concerts, etc.  Disney titles probably make up the bulk of my collection.

VHS cassettes - Around 100 - probably less.  Foreign films (mainly French titles) make up most of this collection.  Plus a bunch of tapes of shows I've played for.

CDs - Hmmm... I did do a count a few years ago, and I can't remember if I hit 2000 or 3000.  I know I'm past 1000.  Hmmm... Now that I'm visualizing my collection, I'm thinking it's 2000+.  Most of it is Classical Music - lots of boxed sets including all the major operas by Bellini, Mozart, Puccini, Rossini, Strauss, Verdi and Wagner.  At least four sets of the Mozart Piano Sonatas; three sets of the Beethoven Symphonies and the Piano Concerti; and almost all of those classic Angel/EMI "Complete Songs of..." sets - at least the French composers - How I wish they would reissue the Roussel set!  The piano concerti of Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Saint-Saens; plus tons of chamber music.  My favorites would have to be Richard Goode's complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas on Nonesuch, and any of my Dawn Upshaw discs which are also primarily on Nonesuch.  *However, my favorite Upshaw disc is her debut CD which was a result of her Naumburg win - which I think is on MusicMasters.  It's a great recital disc and Margo Garrett's accompanying is a model of accompanying.  The Rachmaninov selections are wonderful.

As for show CDs, it's a good size, but I'm definitely not a "completist".

I still have one crate of LPs sitting in my parents' basement.  Mainly OCRs.

I used to have a bunch of cassettes - original and dubs - but somehow, over the past couple of years, I've lost track of where most of them are.  I may have thrown a bunch of them out accidentally in a move.  ???

Ah, well...

Actors who do not do as they are told.

The actor in THE NERD who replaced the actor who quit is doing a nice job, but he has NOT looked at his script in a week.  He is in love with his "business" and his ad libs which he thinks are stealing the show...while we struggle to cover for him.  He also doesn't give us cues so that a LOT of laughs are missing....  Tonight I finally said:  "Are you EVER going to say......." quoting him the line....  "Oh, I might," he replied, and then went on to say that he never said one line because he was waiting on the audience laughter to die down.....and that I jumped the cue.....  I just said...."oh....."  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR....closing night tonight!  Great audience last night, wish they could have been given the WHOLE show!

I have many more CDs than I ever thought I would although I don't have anything approaching a thousand. It' a few hundred. That includes the vocals/pop genre which are mixed together (though still alphabetical and kept in a separate unit from the cast recordings). Most of the CDs are cast recordings & theatre-related with some soundtracks thrown in. I'm not a completist for the genre but I try to be a completist for certain shows and a couple of composers.

We have very few DVDs and very few videos. As I mentioned last week, we don't even have a stand-alone DVD player. It's part of the computer. We will probably get one at some point, but I don't think that will increase our supply of DVDs. We just don't have the room and CDs are more important to me than DVDs since I watch so few movies.

I used to have a very large cassette collection but as I replace the tapes with CDs, the tapes get donated to a second hand store (there are no stores in New York that I know of that buy tapes).

Francois, thanks for the Disney CD on Demand link. You have made a friend of mine very, very happy!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.....money in the bank and chicks for free....isn't that a song or something?

Hmmmmmmmm......collections.

Okay:

CD's:  about 500 or so.  Mostly Original Casts and Soundtracks.  Several "nostalgia" singers like Gale Storm and Betty Hutton and the like.  And several compilation cd's!  I loves my music.  When I am doing a show, or my theatre group is producing a show, I spend a bit of time getting all of the recordings of it that I can find (usually on EBAY) - so I have multiple recordings of JOSEPH, SOUTH PACIFIC, OKLAHOMA!, MY FAIR LADY, etc.  And of course the collections that I make myself and have been sent to me by the DR's here at HHW.

My most treasured and rare:  THE COURT JESTER produced by Mr BK himself!  Didn't even know it existed!  And of course the Kritzer CD's....hope you are taking a CD player boombox to play some of those selections before during or AFTER the readings today, MR BK!

DVD's....like MBARNUM (and MR BK a week or so ago) I bought and am enjoying THE BEST OF YOU BET YOUR LIFE....oh my!  Otherwise, about 600 DVD's of all kinds.  I love the monster-sci fi genre of course!  But I have lots of musicals and epics!  I just recently got EL CID in a Chinese version.....great stereo sound, letterboxed, removable subtitles...it will do until we get an official release.

Lots of VHS tapes as well....a few hundred, same genres...some of them the SAME movies!

A bit of BOLLYWOOD (including some made for me by MBARNUM) but a few that I really like, in the main PAKEEZAH!

Okay...someone else's turn!

TOD:

DVD: Well, I don't own a DVD player, so my DVD collection is zero, but I have a number of video tapes.  About 40-50.  Over half are Disney features and the rest are all musical theatre/cabaret programs I have recorded over the years.

CD/Cassette:  Originally I was a bit embarrased to admit how many recordings I have, but after reading the previous posts I see I am in good company. :)
I have easily 800-900 recordings.  It might be more, but I have never counted.  They are all musical theatre/cabaret related.  I realized a while back that if I collected other types of music also...I would dread to imagine how many CDs/cassettes I would have.  Thank goodness my strongest passion in music is musical theatre/cabaret.

DR George:

You are right.  Nina Hagen has a very...unique voice.  I thought it might work well for Weill.  For another person with a 'unique' voice doing Weill, you should check out Marianne Faithfull singing Kurt Weill.  I like it, but it is not for everyone's taste.

I hope you enjoy "Debbie Does Dallas."  I thought it was funny, but I think it holds the record for most dialogue on a cast recording.

MORNING LEVITY

Quote
A husband walks into Frederick's of Hollywood to purchase some sheer
lingerie for his wife. He is shown several possibilities that range from $250 to $500 in price, the more sheer, the higher the price. He opts for the most sheer item, pays the $500 and takes the lingerie home He presents it to his wife and asks her to go upstairs, put it on and model it for him.

Upstairs, the wife thinks, "I have an idea. It's so sheer that it might as well be nothing. I won't put it on, do the  modeling naked, return it tomorrow and keep the $500 refund for myself.

So she appears naked on the balcony and strikes a pose.

The husband says, "Good Lord! You'd think that for $500, they'd at least iron it!"

He never heard the shot. Funeral services are pending

AND THE DAILY HEALTH/FOOD COMMENTARY

The  Straight Dope (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_060.html) reported:

Quote
Dear Cecil:

My wife loves sushi. Sushi is just raw fish. Raw fish is full of deadly contaminants. Is she doomed? Pull no punches. --Mike M., Chicago

Cecil replies:

Mike, I have to be honest with you. There is a big potential problem here. It involves something that's small, pink, and crawls.

HINT: You're not likely to chuck it under the chin and go, "Ooh, CUTE Baby Snookums."

You got it, pal. Worms.

Eating raw fish can result in anisakiasis, an infection caused by an infestation of Anisakis worm larvae.

Now, don't panic, it's not that bad. They're not BIG worms. Not like one of those tapeworms, which can be a foot or two in length and take up more room in your abdominal cavity than you do.

No, these are LITTLE worms. They grow up to a mere one inch in length.

This is not comforting you, I can tell. Sorry, I'm doing the best I can.

Well, not BIG WORMS - that's a relief!

Later it was observed:

Quote
EATING IT RAW: AN UPDATE

To the Teeming Millions:

Readers who recall Cecil's discussion of the hazards of eating raw fish will be fascinated by a recent report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

It seems a 24-year-old student with a pain in his right side underwent surgery for appendicitis. His appendix was found to be normal, but surgeons were startled to see a 10-inch pinkish-red worm crawl out of the guy's body.

Turned out to be a Eustrongylides, a parasite normally found in fish-eating birds. The victim, obviously not a regular reader of the Straight Dope, said he ate sushi and sashimi once a month.

My feeling is, if you must eat this stuff, make sure you first give it a good going-over with a rock.

But there is more to the story:

Quote
AN UPDATE UPDATE: OK TO USE SMALL ROCK

Dear Cecil:

Re the 10-inch post-sushi stomach worm, enclosed is a page from a recent Nutrition Action Healthletter. Turns out the Sushi Worm From Hell was "only" about 1-1/2 inches long. Some comfort. --Junu Kim, Chicago

It seems the editors of Nutrition Action, from which I got this horrifying item, multiplied instead of dividing when converting from the metric. I am surrounded by schmucks.

Well as the NW HHW contingent will attest (and as some of them outright mentioned) I have a lot of CDs and DVDs (and they didn't even see all of them since I don't think they ever went in the master bedroom).

Out in the living area are two CD cases, one with probably about 1,000 Brasilian CDs.  I love Brasilian music, love, love, love it.  Next to that case is another holding probably another 1,000 jazz and world music CDs, with a couple of shelves for soundtracks and easy listening, especially my wonderful Percy Faith recordings.  Because I was running out of room back in the bedroom, I also transferred some Broadway compilation stuff out to the living room, including all of BK's Lost in Bostons and Unsungs, etc.  Also on those shelves are some of the composer demos I have for shows like Foxy, Company, Prince of Grand St., blah blah blah.

Back in the master bedroom are three more cases (one a really cool rotating shelf--did you say rotating shelves?--ooh, a Monty Python reference, kind of).  The regular shelf holds probably (yes, again) another 1,000 classical recordings.  My favorite composers (right now, ask me again in 5 minutes and I'll have different choices) would include Brahms, R. Strauss and Stravinsky.

Next to that shelf is the rotating case featuring OCRs (probably close to 1,000, including many rare items , or so I'm told by my fauning acolytes LOL) and pop stuff (maybe 700 or so).

Next to this are my LPs.  Don't even get me started on LPs--I still have scads of them, on two huge beautiful wire and teak units that I got for free due to a huge shipping error (but that's another story).

Over in the corner is a smaller shelf with all my early music.  I am a huge fan of early music, especially Hildegard of Bingen, not to be confused with Hildegard of the 1950s.  I also have a lot of indigenous music of various cultures, including lots of early Jewish music.

Now DVDs--oy.  We have a whole media room downstairs stuffed to the gills with both DVDs and VHSs.  I would guess we have close to 1,000 DVDs, but who's counting (probably Betsy, who thinks I should rent and not always buy, and she's probably right, but don't tell her I said that).

In the master bedroom stuffed into a corner are two more DVD shelves with stuff we haven't gotten to yet (since I tend to buy lots on sales, we have a huge backlog).

"How to I hear you, I can count the ways:"

CDs - 367 Show/Cabaret
          241 Classical
            67 Movie Soundtracks
            50 Pop
 Total:725 Titles

(There are at least 100 more not yet catalogued - PDQ Bach, Tom Lehrer, Dr. Demento, Yanni, Xmas stuff, etc.)

"How do I see thee, I can count the ways (with difficulty - multi disc box sets count as 1 Item, 2 Titles on a single disk count as 2 Items)":

DVDs 570 Titles

I stopped counting both CDs, tapes, and DVDs a long time ago. I know the DVDs number over a thousand. Cds are probably 500-700. Videotapes are probably close to 200, but their number has been dwindling as I've given away lots of stuff I had once I got it in better copies on DVD. Same with laserdiscs. USed to have 200 or so, but I gave many of them away to friends who had machines and no intention of replacing their lasers with DVDs.
Title: Re:GO KNOW
Post by: Matt H. on September 18, 2004, 08:17:46 AM
Most of my Cds are show recordings of some type or other (and I include the various bk compilations in this). I do have a few personality discs (lots of Garland and Streisand, Durbin, Peter Allen, Village People, Crosby, etc.) and some soundtracks but really not very many of those at all.

The DVDs run the gamut from silents to classics to recent hits. There are lots of most every genre except war movies in which I have only a limited few titles. It is by far my least favorite genre.

News from the Wild, Wild, West:

Extract from an Associated Press (http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,132786,00.html) story:

Quote
Waitress Arrested for Ordering Hit on PatronsFriday, September 17, 2004

WESTMINSTER, Calif.  — A waitress has been accused of ordering the killings of two customers who allegedly made rude remarks and tried to grab her as she served drinks at a Vietnamese nightclub, authorities said.

Ngan Thi Bich Vo, 20, was arrested Tuesday as she allegedly prepared to flee to Vietnam, police said. The woman's boyfriend, wanted for questioning about the Aug. 16 killings, may have left the country.

Vo was among three people named in a murder complaint stemming from the fatal shootings of Tri Thanh Phan, 38, and Kurt Martinsen, 29, at a Garden Grove nightclub. The men reportedly bought Vo a rose as a gesture of apology shortly before they were gunned down.

According to Garden Grove Police Lt. Mike Handfield, Vo called her boyfriend, who was at another nightclub, and told him she felt two customers had insulted her by tugging on her skirt and trying to flirt with her.

"She was highly upset, and that may have been the anger that caused this," Handfield said. "She called and facilitated the murders. There is evidence that suggested that she took part in a message to 'take care of business.'"

A gunman walked into the crowded restaurant, strode past four tables, opened fire and then fled into a getaway car. Two men allegedly in the getaway car were arrested

Now, I suspect Panni will turn this into a teleplay. "Taking Care of Business" as a title has been used; perhaps "When a Rose Is Not Enough" for LIFETIME.

Since BK mentioned books, I will usurp that as a supplementary TOD.  Just yesterday I got a great shipment of old Weekly Reader Book Club books that I had as a child, that I want to share with my boys.  Among these were two of my all-time childhood favorites:  The Pink Motel and Follow My Leader.  Any fans of these two in HHW land?  The cool thing is these were all mint with pretty much unblemished DJs and I got 18 of them for less than $20.00!!  eBay, of course.  Really strange in that The Pink Motel often goes with DJ for upwards of $30 or $40.

Now here's the interesting part for you bibliophiles:  also included were a bunch of other tomes, including a very interesting book from the early 30s called The Skipping Hillies by one Mabel Hall.  Inside it is inscribed by three of the Hill sisters, evidently the basis for the characters in the book.  I did a little Googling yesterday and only found one or two references, but they were most interesting:  the book is evidently about growing up in Carbondale, Illinois.  Now here's the punchline:  one of Betsy's oldest friends has lived in Carbondale for years and her husband is the state representative from that district!  So we are going to call them and see if we can get more information.

Bruce, I’m glad to hear that you like your new house.  May you only know good health, happiness, good friends and good times for as long as you live there.

Have a good book reading as well.  I know whoever comes will enjoy it.

Speaking of books, I wanted to you all about the charity book sale they had down at work.   I found a book that I had read as a kid and as it was only fifty cents, I couldn’t resist buying it again.  It was called, “Champion Dog: Prince Tom” by Jean Fritz and Tom Clute.  It’s the true story about a Cocker Spaniel.  I’m looking forward to re-reading it again. It was like seeing an old friend when I saw it laying there.

A friend of mine loaned me his copy of “Dune:  The Battle of Corrin” by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.  It’s the last book of a trilogy that was a prequel to prequel trilogy they wrote to the Dune serial written by Frank Herbert (who was Brian Herbert’s father).  They did a wonderful job of writing a very interesting story line.

The thing I hate about a good trilogy is that part of me wants to race through the book to find out what happens and the other part wants to take it’s time and savor every page.

I have to go out and do the weekly shopping.  I may get that new printer/copier/scanner I’ve been talking about.  I would like to scan some photos and get them safely to CD.  I lost so many of my photos in an accident a few years back.

I just bought an on line ticket for POTO when it comes in December.  I got a very nice seat, almost dead center.  I’m so excited.  Of course, I have seen it before.  At least three other times but some things you want to go back to again and again.

I always knew there was a reason I didn’t like sea food raw or cooked.  YUCK!

As for CD/DVD collections.  Mine is kind of haphazard.  I only have things that I like and will confess most of what I like other people don’t.    Mostly sci fi and fantasy stuff.  Two items on my wish list on DVD are DVD copy of “The Awaking Land” with Elizabeth Montgomery and “The Sword and the Sorcerer”.  I only have a vague memory of that one but know that I really liked it.

The same with CD’s.  I have all of Michael Crawford’s and most of Michael Ball’s.  The other stuff is just this and that.

CDs---if we're strictly talking "commercial" releases, then they number approximately 2,000 in the "soundtrack" genre, with about 1,000 classical, pop, rock.

DVDs -- fewer today than there were this time last week -- I have about 700 of them.

LPs -- in my house, there are approximately 700.  Another 400 plus-or-minus 50 are in storage.

Would LOVE to purge more of them.  Hate to, though.

The 1959 movie "Warlock" just ended on AMC -- magnificent score by Leigh Harline.  Sadly, I know of only two Harline scores on commercial recordings: "Pinocchio" (the Disney one) and "Broken Lance."

Now, "The Far Country"is airing...one of those early 50s Universal music-score-by-committee affairs that saw only Joseph Gershenson receive on-screen credit (for supervision).  I don't know if Gershenson even wrote music, but he always got screen credit.  For this film, the uncredited composers included Henry Mancini, Hans J. Salter, Frank Skinner and Herman Stein.

Some years ago, in my notebook of potential songs, I had a title, "Cheap Sushi" but I could never make a song out of it because cheap sushi means different things to different people.  Some love sushi but find it unaccountably expensive, and therefore appreciate a bargain.  Others are disgusted by the thought of cheap sushi, picturing the health and cleanliness issues alluded to in earlier postings.  Often, people make an equation: if it's cheap, it can't be safe.

My love for sushi began at a time when inexpensive sushi didn't exist in these United States.  It always cost an arm and a leg, and, for that price, you were getting the highest quality fish, picked up that morning from a dock, stored in the best possible conditions and the cut by a master artisan who knew exactly where to cut the safest and most delicious morsels.  (Gee, when you put it that way, it sounds like it's worth the price.)  It was then I learned the rule that I've mentioned on this board before: if you don't see the chef's knife go through the fish, don't eat it.

Nowadays, every market, no matter what size, has little plastic platters of cheap sushi with the inevitable glob of wasabit and packet of soy sauce.  You don't get to know the quality of the fish, who cut it, and when it might have been cut.  I'd speculate that the poor guy with the worm problem might have habitually eaten that stuff.

The best meal I ever had in Los Angeles was a lunch at Matsuhisa on LaCienega's Restaurant Row.  My friend's girlfriend at the time was something of a diplomat, and spoke with the chef - an essential part of a good sushi experience.  Matsuhisa has been, for many years now, one of L.A.'s top restaurants.  The L.A. Times critic who pronounced it the best restaurant in L.A. later moved to the New York Times, where she pronounced Nobu Matsuhisa's New York restaurant, Nobu, even better than Matsuhisa.  Suffice it to say that no one has ever suffered any ill health effects from eating at these establishments.  It would be MAJOR news in the restaurant world if they did.

But those crummy $5.50 trays in your supermarket, no one can vouch for.

And never eat sushi on a Sunday - fish markets take the day off and you're eating old fish.  Joy won't eat it on Monday either.

Mr. Handy Man is being handy and is installing the DVD shelves and then the CD shelves and I can finally start unboxing that stuff - although I'm sure it will take days.

CDs - around six or seven thousand.  DVDs, probably two thousand.  Books - heaven knows.

Good Morning!  -barely...

-I've been spending the morning listening the NPR station here in L.A. - well, at least one of them.  It's so "interesting" - for lack of a better word - listening to "Weekend Edition" being broadcast at 2:00AM - Why is it on so early?!??!  Oh... DUH!  It's live... Then rebroadcast.  And then the other programs out here that I've never heard before.  Pretty decent.  And then "Car Talk" came on.. And then "Wait, Wait..."... And then I realized I should get out of bed...   So...

I need to take care of some phone calls... Back in a little bit...

I have had email from Larry and the early dinner is fine with him.  Penny must be distracted by the sublet situation (not an issue when she wrote me earlier) because  she also plans to join us for dinner.  Any suggestions?  Aside from meat, I don’t want  sushi.

I love challah French toast.   I haven’t had time to make Betsy’s recipe yet.  Chances are I won’t until I return from NY. :(

Penny good vibes finding a new sublet.

We have very few DVDs and tapes.  We have a somewhat decent, though far from large, collection of CDs but I think a nice variety of music.  With the problems we have been having with our sound system and the main DVD player working inconsistently we haven’t made many new purchases yet.  I plan to rectify that once we get a new system, whenever that is.

Bruce, hope the reading went well today and each day you feel more at home in your new abode.  Corner lots can be fun.

TOD:
CDs - 367 Show/Cabaret
          241 Classical
            67 Movie Soundtracks
            50 Pop
 Total:725 Titles

(There are at least 100 more not yet catalogued - PDQ Bach, Tom Lehrer, Dr. Demento, Yanni, Xmas stuff, etc.)
DVDs 570 Titles

der Brucer (Woody and I are still fussing over cataloguing - every title as a line entry makes knowing what you have easiest, every box as a separate line entry makes finding the item easiest. CDs are grouped by category (Shows are in Title order, Cabaret and Pop are in Artist order, Classical in composer order)
It's not the cataloguing that's causing the problem, dear der Brucer mine.  It's your insistance that we file the CDs and DVDs in what you call a logical order, which often means I cannot find anything you've filed at all.  If it were up to you, all the titles would be mixed together regardless of whether they are part of a set or not.

For example, it is only logical to put all the Bond titles together, in chron order.  Similarly, the Trek films belong together.  But you would have them helter-skelter all over the place.

Not to mention my wanting to put the kid-friendly DVDs in one location, so that the grandlads will know which from our collection they can grab and watch when they visit (and so their mother can double-check so that our standards match).  Kiki's Delivery Service is kid-friendly.  Aeon Flux is not.

I spent twenty-three years of my life filing.  I know what I'm doing.  Please leave some of my professional dignity intact!

I am currently on Canadapost online to figure out how much a package I'm sending will cost (I like to know in advance).

I had the craziest shopping day EVER today.

My mom and sis and I were at Zellers (it's a Walmart type store). And they had tons of discount clothing outside.  I was looking for kids stuff.  And when I asked the lady the price of an item (they are normally 50% off of the last price) she told me everything outside was $1.

Since this is totally crazy, I filled up my carriage (as did my sis).  She was looking for clothes for herself, and I was looking for kid's clothes for her niece.

When we eventually got inside, we were told that the sale was a big mistake, but that they would honor it for those people who mentioned it at the cash.

OMG, all the stuff I got cost me $31 (27 items). And it was probably worth like $500.

So it was a very good shopping day for me (well for my sister's niece who hopefully will be happy when she gets all her new clothes).

Ugh!  Been sick with a sore, drippy throat and low grade fever all day.  Whatever this is, it started yesterday in work where I had a headache and felt so lethargic I thought I was going to fall asleep a few times.  I'm trying my best to do absolutely nothing this weekend to rest up and get better.

TOD:

I organized my CDs just a few weeks ago, so I have a good idea of what I have.  My collection numbers in the neighborhood of 900, with approximately half of them being musical theatre related.  I also have a number of (*ahem*) unconventionally obtained show related recordings that, instead of burning as music CDs, I've been storing as MP3 files wheich are then burned onto CDs or DVDs (I can get multiple recordings on one disc that way.)  I have 50-plus of these recordings.

As far as DVDs are concerned, my collection is probbaly just approaching one hundred.  I try to be very selective on what I buy these days.

My VHS collection also numbers in the hundreds, but I never did an exact count on them.  I'm hoping to one day transfer the rarer recordings to DVD.

My Bollywood movie for this weekend is: PYASI SHAM (1969).

Two cousins are in love with the same gal. When the girl decides on one cousin over the other the father of the loser goes ballistic.

I bought this one because it was supposed to have my favorite Bollywood actress Helen in it. She is in the credits...but, I couldn't find her in the movie, other then one scene where a guy grabs a cardboard dispay off of a store shelve and it has a picture of Helen on it! Humph!

Ok, I went through my Cds and DVDs...I have around 370 DVDs...however some DVDs have multiple movies on them.

Of those 370 DVDs there are 75 Bollywood DVDs. Of those I have watched 54 of them...with 20 left still to view.

There are 137 unwatched DVDs of various genres. Most of my movies tend to be B films from the 30s, 40, 50s, and 60s. Lots of Sci-fi and horror and mystery.

For CDs I couned around 290. About 1/3 or more are Bollywood soundtracks, the remainder are lounge music, easy listening from various decades, Big Band, and a handful of movie soundtracks. Also several Christmas CDs.

I bought this one because it was supposed to have my favorite Bollywood actress Helen in it. She is in the credits...but, I couldn't find her in the movie, other than one scene where a guy grabs a cardboard display off of a store shelve and it has a picture of Helen on it! Humph!

LOL!

Is she wearing a pink hat on the pic!
Think Pink!.... oh, a Funny Face reference! :D

This morning I went for a walk, and I forgot to take my camera with me.

We are enjoying the remains of  Hurricane Javier, who wandered in from the Pacific coast.  Rain always makes the purple sage bloom. It didn't even hit 100F here today -- a very nice day!

Evening all!

I enjoyed the pictures of the reading.  I have GOT to get me one of those picture taking phones!  I have a bad case of tech envy! :)

I did get the new printer/copier/scanner but I haven't have time to connect it to the computer.

I also bought a new chair for my computer desk but I will be taking it back.  It felt wonderful in the store but when I got it home, it didn't fit the desk.  I have it as low as it will go but  my feet can't touch the floor!  It was fine in the store.

After talking about The Sword and the Sorcerer  this morning,  I did a little search and found it is available on DVD.  Yay! I'm looking forward to seeing that one again.

I can't keep up with all the new releases.

I read somewhere that DVD's will go the way of the VHS tapes in less than ten years so I wonder if it's even worth it to buy all these movies.  If memory serves correctly, did you know that Circuit City is going to stop selling VHS tapes after January?  I know it's sometime in the not to distant future.

Matt, you read the book about Prince Tom?  Did you like it?

I was looking at the menu for Joe Allen's.  I don't see the dish I ordered when I was there with Elmore.  It was a wonderful chicken with sweet potato on the side.  Yummy!  If I ever make it back up that way I would like to have it again!

Ben, and other New Yorkers, I have heard so much about the yummy  tofu at Ollie's and the Westside Cottage sounds good. Convenience and ambience are also important.  We do want to relax and carry on a conversation. I shall let you locals decide where to eat.  I saw plenty to eat at Joe Allen’s and should probably experience this special restaurant.  I found plenty to choose from, including the gingerbread cake for dessert.  I will also eat salmon if there isn’t tofu.

Just tell me where and the time.  But please, someone make a reservation.  :D

I am looking forward to meeting the NY gang.  :)

Watched "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" today from the new Hitchcock box set.  I STILL laughed out loud at one of the most beautifully realized scenes I first burst a gut viewing the only time I saw this film.  The restaurant scene is one of the most subtle builds I can recall in a screwball comedy.  (Salt shaker in napkin?)   <G>

Marching onward....

Got through two chapters in "Angels In America."
I saw the original HBO series...but GOD what language both "words" and "film."

When did Mike Nicholas start to use those ariel shots in his opening credits....(I know Working Girl and Birdcage...but was it ALWAYS a thing with him?).  Beautiful across from Golden Gate to the statue down up and under...and then the statue moves.

And a GREAT shot from a hotel bar....out through the window into the park past various bodies having uhhh....well....see the film....

Beautiful play realized on film...with performances that should kick ass tomorrow at the Emmys.

Isn't it amazing that not a single one of the marvelous songs from the score of SNOW WHITE was nominated for a Best Song Oscar! Was this a revolt against cartoon songs getting nominations or did the music branch actually think the songs nominated were all vastly superior to the SNOW WHITE songs? Many of those songs made the Hit parade, so it couldn't be that they were looked down on. I've never read an adequate explanation as to why that score was overlooked.

I know things have been very ugly at Disney with Eisner there for some time, but to the general public, I doubt they'll notice much difference whether he's there or not.

BTW, saw the trailer for Pixar/Disney's THE INCREDIBLES coming in November, and it looks like a hoot.

After I finished the documentary on the STAGE FRIGHT DVD, I reached for the top DVD off the stack thinking it was FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT. The ratings for the MISS AMERICAN PAGEANT have been falling for over a decade now, and trying new things on the show this year didn't make it any better. (My mom and I used to watch it religiously every year).

One sure sign that it's not considered a primo special any more: ABC didn't broadcast it in high definition.

Ollies is fun (it's in the heart of Times Square on 44th just west of Broadway) and at 5pm it shouldn't be too crowded. I don't know if they take reservations. I'll see what I can find out. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a guilty pleasure...it's SO not Hitchcock...and one wonders what would he have done with Lombard in one of his "REAL" films.  But it's the men who shine.  Montgomery is great....so is Rayburn....(maybe tooooo much better).  But there are a few set pieces that are SOOOooooo good....in Hitch's work....and the actors....is a B....maybe a B+

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

Good show tonight.  At least from a performance standpoint.

The audience, however... Hmmm...  Let's just say they were being "polite", and leave it at that for now.  -I'll let BK put their reaction - or non-reaction - in his own words in his own inimitable style.

And it's actually kind of cool outside now too.  Brrr... ;)

OH!  And if you really want to experience Times Square dining, there's always the world's largest TGIFriday's!

NOT!!!

Ugh!

*Oh, and I keep meaning to mention that the kitchen at Joe Allen will usually accomodate "special requests" from diners (make a certain dish vegetarian, no dairy, etc.).  Just all depends upon how busy the place is.  I guess that's what happens when you cater to actor-types. ;)

Today, I went to a Seattle Storm (http://www.wnba.com/storm/) women's basketball game with my niece (I know, I know...HHW is not really a sports fan's site ::)).  It was a good game, but they lost by three measly little points.  If the last shot by Sue Bird had gone in (at about two seconds till the end of the game) it would have tied the score and forced the game into overtime.  But the shot didn't go in and they lost.  Oh well, they're already in the playoffs. :) That's all that really matters now!  Go Storm!

They do two shows.  One at 9:00 - I think - and one later at Midnight.  The Midnight show usually does have some extra exposure.  Or at least the "tease factor" is upped.  It's never gratuitous or in your face (hmmm... maybe that's the wrong phrase to use here).  There was one skit a few years ago involving strategically placed soap bubbles and shaving cream.  ;)
