Well, you've read the notes, the notes broke their fast, and now it is time for you to post until the breaking their fast cows come home.

Had a wonderful time watching the taping/broadcast of Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion." Lovely music and sketch comedy, and of course it is fun to watch the sound effects guy work his magic. People come from all around the country to be in that audience. Garrison does not use any notes for his "Lake Wobegone" monologue - it is all either extemporaneous or memorized. The audience in the theater sure had a good time! It will be interesting to listen to the archive to hear how the show came across over the radio, having been there to "see" it.

We then traveled several blocks westward to the Ordway for the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra concert. They played Sibelius's incidental music for "Pelléas et Mélisande," based on the same Maeterlinck play as Debussy's opera of the same name. Gorgeous stuff! Then the Frank Martin Violin Concerto, marvelously played by soloist Baiba Skride, and after the intermission, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. I never tire of them!

Today, I have to go to church to sing for the People, if I can get there what with the marathon going on. Then an afternoon rehearsal, followed by attending an evening dinner party.  Whew!

Interesting tidbit: Jonathan Coe's 2001 novel, The Rotter's Club, closes with a single 33-page sentence consisting of 13,995 words - the longest ever written in the English language. What a doozy!

There are many other examples of "restricted writing":

Gadsby is an English-language novel of 50,100 words, none of which contain the letter "e."

Never Again is a novel by Doug Nufer in which no word is used more than once.

Lots more...

Good morning, all.

It's still 42 degrees here (the overnight low), and only going up to 59 today, even though it's sunny and clear.

And I object.  That's too cold for the 5th of the month.

Good morning, all! I slept in because I could and because I did not want to leave my warm bed where i was dreaming a really strange dream about being in an off-off-Broadway play in a loft.

Now that I am up, I will work on PAINT YOUR WAGON, look over a few orchestra scores that my friend Nathan wanted my opinion, and maybe watch a Netflix disc that has sat here for weeks.

I have had problems on and off since before we moved here.  Was Lauren able to give you stretches and exercises to help?

Basically I'm doing stretches and walking.  A week ago I did the stairmaster at the gym and thought I was fine until that night and the next day.  I have hesitated to return to it.  I know bending over to pick up acorns and leaves triggered it, yet last year that wasn't a problem.  Grooming Echo on the floor sent me to PT years ago.

Try a massage.  It can really help sciatica.  I only hesitate now because a massage table bothers my shoulder.

A free-for-all TOD:

Someone asked a question on CastRecL regarding "In-One" numbers, referencing MY FAIR LADY and "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face".  Another person said "On the Street Where You Live" and "Show Me" are textbook "In-One" numbers.

I swear I have never heard the term, and I couldn't come up with a search string in Google that worked.  So here I am, hat in hand and suitably embarrassed, in search of enlightenment...
Title: Re: BREAKING THE FAST
Post by: singdaw on October 05, 2014, 07:49:03 PM
My impression has always been that "in-one" numbers take place on the apron in front of the show curtain, while the main set is being changed.
Title: Re: BREAKING THE FAST
Post by: singdaw on October 05, 2014, 07:49:51 PM
Nowadays, with mechanized stage technology, the trend is for more seamless transitions; hence, no need for "in-one" numbers.

Have been helping a friend with her statistics homework -- post degree program for nurses.  Ugh, four hours later and still helping.  This online university stuff is for the birds.  Geeze, sometimes you wish for the days where you can key punch a bunch of cards and send them off to the computer department for processing.  Apple PC's migrated into the Cal State University system during my freshman and sophmore years.  I could use a game of pong right now!
