Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fun, and now it is time for you to post until the fun cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: JUVENESCENT!
-
First post after BK!
-
Ask BK Day
Did we already order Sandy's new album, or is that upcoming?
-
Happy Hump Day! I always hoped that would have a different meaning after I retired.
-
We were supposed to have another big rain storm arriving from Oregon at around midnight. It must have gotten stopped for a speeding ticket, because it is late. Either that, or Jane wouldn't allow it to come north until she had squeezed every drop out of the storm.
-
A SCREAM FROM AN.EMPTY THEATER should be the name of a new murder mystery by someone. Maybe I should go back to writing. My acting career has kind of reached a standstill.
-
Sorry George, I guess the inspections don't apply to Thurston County. Guess where we have our seat of government?
-
Just me and my shadow.....
-

Tom, it's not a big rain storm, but it's raining here in Tumwater now.
-
Well, this should get Wednesday off to a good start.
-
Sorry George, I guess the inspections don't apply to Thurston County. Guess where we have our seat of government?
Interesting.

Then I blame Jane.

Interesting.
Seriously, I believe it is based on population.

G'night!

Good night, Tom.

Well, speaking of cars...yesterday, I left work and drove downtown to the call-backs for "The Head That Wouldn't Die." As I got off the freeway and stopped at the first stoplight, I noticed smoke coming out from under the hood of my car!! ??? It smelled like something was burning! :o As I started driving again, the smoke dissipated, but the next time I stopped again, there was the smoke and the smell. Fortunately, I was able to get to the theater without my car exploding (I was imagining the worst case scenario all the way). Actually, the day before, I checked my oil and it was low. I got some oil, but I didn't get a chance to add it. After the audition, I was able to add the oil. I called my sister who only lives a couple of miles from where I was, and was able to drive my car to her house. She let me borrow her car and today, I'll drive back over and try to drive my car home. My sister's boyfriend will drive behind me in case it starts to smoke again, but I won't drive the freeway. I'll take the main streets through town. I don't know if the oil was the cause of the burning smell and smoke, or if it was something else like a belt. Whatever it turns out to be, hopefully it won't be too expensive.
-
Of course, it's bad timing. I had an audition last night, I'm ushering tonight, and tomorrow night starts the second weekend of "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) [revised]. :P
-
And now, to bed.
-
First morning post after BK!
-
It's October 15th, the end of the day today will be end of the extension tax busy season.
-
For better or worse, i'll likely be less E&T than I have been, unless the boss has some surprise projects that have somehow been held off until after tax season.
-
The first words I heard when turning on CNN (when I switched over from NY1) happened to be "projectile vomiting" - it first felt like it's too early in the morning for this kind of talk, but I admit the discussion of ebola is really starting to seem necessary.
-
Really enjoying the commentary on the putting together of Sandy's album (and The World Goes Round album). I'm noticing that there are tidbits in the posts that are not in the notes, which makes doing a real sweeping ketchup of what I've missed in the posts even more necessary.
-
If I've missed sending accolades or supportive words to anyone because I've missed some posts, I apologize.
-
Woo hoo! My Birding Buddy arrives today. She lives half the year in the mid-west and half the year here. I've missed her the last several months.
-
So how far apart do DR George and DR TCB actually live?

Oh, we might as well just turn the page now.

Good morning, all! I must run to Staples, pick up several things and head down to Toyland.
I've got a page in my work copy of Paint Your Wagon that needs recopied, and a page to fix in my Moross score for Windflowers. I'd like to be out of there no later than noon, get home and continue with PYW.

BK I still think that you should try to get DR MBarnum to come back by contacting him again. Whether you think he overreacted or not is not the point. His feelings were hurt.
-
Good Morning! And on a Wednesday yet!!!
-
Wednesday morning greetings! I'm taking Mom to the doctor today for a check-up, so will be E & T during the middle of the day.
-
BK,
I totally agree that the shorter version of DUEL is much better.
I was not aware that there were 2 versions of 1941.
What are the differences?

I received my box of "accidental" goodies from Warner Archive yesterday.
You'll recall that, during the first few minutes (or hours) of their Columbus Day 5 for $50 sale, several box sets were wrongly included in the sale. I was lucky enough to make my selections before Warner Archive discovered their error and, just as I checked out and paid for my purchase, the sale got suspended. It's to Warner Archive's credit that they honored all purchases that were made before the mistake was discovered.
In any event, I got THE JEAN HARLOW COLLECTION (7 discs), CHEYENNE, Seasons 2 and 3, MAVERICK, Season 4 and A LIFE IN THE THEATRE for $10.00 each.
:)

Greetings from Toyland!

Good morning, all.
An oddly beautiful overcast but balmy day here. Wish we could have a lot more of these.
-
I didn't get as far along with the keyboard programming as I would have liked yesterday, but I think I can get through the rest of the book today. This should NOT be that complicated, but the notations are surprisingly (to me) lacking in clarity of intention, and confusion abounds. I found two of the four full score volumes online, which definitely helped in a few places, and I think our conductor has those, too, so I can check other spots later if need be.
-
Based on what I see in this book alone, this show is in need of the DR Elmore Touch.
-
DR CHAS SMITH when you program a keyboard....do you not play that section during performance and just let the keyboard do it?
We have a couple of programmable keyboards, but I have never ventured there with the pianists.
-
We used to have car inspections in Indiana, but it was a big money making racket for somebody, and that somebody sort of fell out of favor, so now we don't have car inspections in Indiana.
-
I'm amazed at all of these states with no car inspections! A bit jealous, too, if you must know. (And you must.)
-
I'll explain the keyboard thing later when I'm not "typing" on this tiny phone.
-
Last Saturday, my wife spotted a mouse or a rat in our back yard. In the 5+ years we've lived here, we have had plenty of lizards and frogs, but no rodents.
Yesterday, our exterminator placed a bait box in the yard and, this morning, I found two dead mice, one in the front yard and the other in the back. How's that for quick results?
I know, I feel bad for the mice, too. They are so cute and I had a pet mouse when I was a kid. But, if they get into your house, they can chew on your wiring and that can cause major problems.

BK,
I totally agree that the shorter version of DUEL is much better.
I was not aware that there were 2 versions of 1941.
What are the differences?
There are an additional 18 minutes of footage and most importantly you get to see more of Patti LuPone and Penny Marshall's neglected performances.
including:
Wally and Dennis getting thrown out onto the street by Mr. Malcomb after he fires them from the diner where they work.
Miss Fitzroy lecturing a group of women, Betty and Maxine among them, about tonight's USO dance which is interupted by a group of Army service men and Sailors entering and chanting wanting the women.
A department store scene with Wally fussing about buying an expensive new zoot suit and Dennis sounding a phoney air-raid siren which leads to panic in the store including a gun-toting Santa Claus yelling out command orders which is revealed to be a set up by Wally who walks out of the store wearing the zoot suit while Dennis meets the twin girls for the first time.
A scene with Scioli outside his house arguing with his non-English speaking wife about converting their car into an armored car while talking with Claude about sending him and someone else atop the Santa Monica ferris wheel on a spot mission for Japanese planes.
A extra scene with Ito and the I-19 Japanese submarine shore party disguising themselves as Christmas trees in a remote Christmas tree lot and the drunken Hollis Wood trying to "chop" them down which leads to his capture.
Scioli arriving at the ferris wheel with Claude and Herbie and explaing to them about their mission in the ferris wheel.
A dinner scene at the Douglas home and Ward explaining to Betty about her going to the USO dance and telling her about the pros and cons about meeting servicemen.
A barracks scene with Odgen Johnson Jones arriving for the first time at the barracks and imediately quarling with the racist Foley about property lines within their quarters.
A scene outside the USO club where Wally arrives and meets with Martinez and his Zoot Suit friends where they are denied access to the club where Corporal Stretch shows up and sets Wally's zoot suit afire which nearly leads to a riot between the Zoot Suiters and the Servicemen. Wally then meets Dennis dressed up as a Marine in order to gain entrance into the club with the twins as his dates.
Additional dialoge between Captain Birkhead and Donna in their car on the way to the airstrip and being afraid of the dark.
Another barracks scene where Sergeant Tree breaks up a fistfight between Jones and Foley by informing them about the riot on Hollywood Blvd. and showing them climing into their tank and starting it up.
A scene of the Japanese submarine I-19 arriving for the first time outside the Douglas house and the sub's entire crew on the deck watching Joan Douglas taking a bath through the bathroom window.
A scene of the tank traveling down a residential street and Wally shooting up Officer Miller's police car to pieces, sending the policeman and some paserby's running for their lives.

Time to head for home.
-
Jennifer, if you read my posts of yesterday you would already know that I have in fact contacted MBarnum twice. He responded to the first message by saying he wouldn't be back. I then wrote him a long follow-up to that, which has had no response. That's the end of it for me and he can do what he pleases. We will survive.
-
BK,
I totally agree that the shorter version of DUEL is much better.
I was not aware that there were 2 versions of 1941.
What are the differences?
Twenty-six excruciating minutes longer.

I'm up - not quite eight hours. Had a long telephonic conversation with Sandy.

DR CHAS SMITH when you program a keyboard....do you not play that section during performance and just let the keyboard do it?
"Programming" can mean any number of things. What you suggest can be one of them, but that's not it. (I haven't yet tried anything in which I'm not physically doing all the playing.) Typically, when somebody who's playing a musical says they're "programming" the keyboard, what that usually means is finding all of the various "sounds" called for (pianos, other instruments, sometimes sound effects), and getting them set up and stored in such a way that you can seamlessly switch from one to the next, in order, during the performance.
In traditional shows, the keyboard might only need to "be" a piano and one or two other instruments in a few passages, such as organ, celesta, accordion, or harp. More contemporary shows call for the keyboard and other electronics to be a much larger component of the show from the get-go, the setup and execution of which can get pretty complex. In some modern-day scores, the number of setups, or "patches", called for, from overture to exit music, can reach a few hundred; i.e., in some sections, you might be changing your setup, or sound, every few bars. So, this kind of programming can range from the very simple to something demanding considerable skill. I'm no genius at this. I have a professional level but not state-of-the-art keyboard, on which I've managed to learn enough to decently execute certain scores. (I don't get into things I can't handle.)
The bitch about this RAGTIME book is how lacking and inconsistent the instructions and notations are. It's maddening when one must guess at, rather than read and do one's best to faithfully execute, the arranger's wishes -- especially when it's obvious that critical information is simply missing. But BASICALLY, once I'm done with this prep work, I'll be able to play this book -- starting with the first "Heintzman Upright Piano", then switching to grand piano, harp, alto flute and clarinet, honky-tonk piano, organ, accordion, strings and brass support, and more -- all in order, instantaneously, by tapping a "switch pedal" with my foot so my hands never have to leave the keyboard.
That's sort of it in a wee tiny nutshell. Sorry that was so long, and I left a LOT out, but did I answer the question? You might as well say yes because that's all yer getting. :D
-
I am home. When I got here, the internet was down.
Again.
I called time warner and threw a fit, because this is happening every day, and I think the problem is this new modem. A technician will be arriving tomorrow afternoon.
No more news.

From DR Laura:
TOD: I was in a movie theater with the children watching a DISNEY MOVIE, and some creep in the seat next to me kept putting his hand on my knee and running his fingers up my leg.
A DISNEY MOVIE!
That's the last time I was in a movie theater. Ick.
Yuck, yuck, yuck! I hope you reported him.

I fortunately slept through the rain last night. It was just drizzly this morning and was nice for a walk in the park with my hiking group.
Mt. Ashland even has snow :)

Birdy-watching vibes for Laura.

TOD:
BK, have you ever done a Warren-Dubin show? I've been listening to a CD that goes beyond the wonderful stuff in the Busby Berkeley movies and am just marveling over how good their songs were.

I blame Jane.
That's usually a safe bet. ;D
We used to blame Jose. I guess the blame has to be someone else who's name begins with a J.

Speaking of leaving.....MBarnum was posting less & less often so I doubt the blame can be placed entirely on the Columbus Day discussion.

For any "Real Housewives" viewers, Joe Giudice blew up on his way in to sentencing and shoved a videocamera into a cameraman's face. Quite a thug today. I guess he doesn't like being filmed off Bravo's payroll.
-
I picked up the mail on my way home today and then Keith also picked up the mail when he came home. We apparently forgot to get the mail yesterday.
-
In the mail was a notice of new regulations for when I renew my driver's license. I will need to take my passport, along with license, to prove legal US residence. Odd is that anyone over 50 has to take a vision exam. WHAT! Shouldn't everyone have to pass that regardless of age? I remember I was in my early twenties when the eye doctor looked at Keith and said "Don't let her drive until she gets her new glasses".
There was no mention of a test. I wonder if they dropped that. I hope so, otherwise I will have to study for it.
-
Many people do not have passports.....
-
There are other options. My passport is the easiest for me.
I found I don't need a test anymore as long as I don't let my license expire :) I'm pretty sure I would pass the eye exam.
-
Finished with all but three songs for the commentary. Taking a break and will do those later.

The only movie that I know has a "director's cut" that is actually SHORTER is Darling Lili. Original running time was 143min. Director's cut is 107min
"Alexander" with Colin Farrell is another example. The original theatrical release was 175 minutes. The first director's cut was 167 minutes. There was a "final" director's cut called "Alexander Revisited" that was 214 minutes. IMDb also lists an "Ultimate cut" at 206 minutes, but I don't know what's different about that, or if it was actually released on DVD.

I believe the directors' cuts of Tom Jones and Apartment Zero are shorter than the theatrical releases.

Watching what is, despite the usual cheerleaders for this sort of thing, surely one of the worst movies ever made - well directed in certain ways, good effects, but a script that is beyond bad and a film trying so hard to be funny and failing and flailing so monumentally that it beggars belief. I saw it at the opening show at the Dome and the audience and I sat there with our mouths agape at its awfulness. This film, "critic" Jonathan Rosenbaum calls an Essential Movie, which tells you all you need to know about THAT guy. It's called 1941. The fact that they released an even longer version, with twenty-six more monumentally unfunny stuff is chutzpah of the highest order. Sometimes it's just a fail.
-
You didn't like the movie when it was originally released yet you wasted your time watching the longer version!?!?
-
Never having seen 1941 I looked it up. Now I want to watch THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING, THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING.

I remember I was in my early twenties when the eye doctor looked at Keith and said "Don't let her drive until she gets her new glasses".
There was no mention of a test. I wonder if they dropped that. I hope so, otherwise I will have to study for it.
They make you take a test to renew your license? They probably should offer a stupidity test, but other than that, no.
A lot of states require a short test to renew your license. I think California lets you renew it on-line, unfortunately we didn't know that before Craig went into the Peace Corps. I remember having to take a renewal test but that, of course, was years and years ago.

The population in our house has dropped by half, because Rob and I have both been left by our spouses. Richard is in Illinois for clergy meetings and Mary Linda's in Indiana for work. He just treated me to dinner at Applebee's.
-
That is nice of Rob and probably just what you need after a trip to the doctor with your mother, even if the trip went well.
-
Yes, DR Jane, and Rob needed it, too. He'd just taken a grizzly exam in his organic chemistry class.

Is one supposed to recognize the person on the left?
Maybe it is suppose to be Ramin Karimloo?
-
So how far apart do DR George and DR TCB actually live?
Around 30-35 miles, I'd guess.
George is probably closer to being correct than I was.
It seems longer when you're in a wheelchair instead of a car.
Boy! Have you got that right!

Are you using my actual address, Jane? I live about as far north in Tacoma as you can get without being a salmon or a black bear.

And how much money will they make off a longer version of failure?
-
Actually, I'm watching the theatrical shorter version - I could never do the long version again. I just keep hoping that time will reverse something as sometimes happens with certain films, but alas not with this film.

And tomorrow night, just grab a pizza and a six pack!

I could never get all the way thru that movie. And I sat thru SKIDOO!
-
Good idea, DR TCB, but Rob works second shift tomorrow and my book group meets at Emilie's.
-
I can't think of any other movie where I have walked out. Several plays, but I don't think any other movie.
-
There are a lot of movies that I should have walked out.
-
Well, I drove my car from my sister's house to the auto shop. MOST fortunately, there was no smoke nor a bad burning rubber smell from my car while I drove it. I explained to the auto shop person what happened yesterday, about the smoke when I got off the freeway, my adding the oil, driving all the way through town today to the auto shop, and they said that they'd be able to look at it tomorrow. At first, the guy said that if the radiator was cracked, there would be a lot more smoke and smell while driving slowly through town, rather than driving quickly on the freeway, and since that's opposite of what happened, I would like to think that the radiator is not cracked. Again, the more I think about it (in my completely uneducated mind...car-wise), I think that it just might be a simple belt problem and not a huge need-to-get-a-new-engine problem.
-
You didn't like the movie when it was originally released yet you wasted your time watching the longer version!?!?
:)
-
I do my best proofreading after I hit "send." :P
So do I.
-
Yes, DR Jane, and Rob needed it, too. He'd just taken a grizzly exam in his organic chemistry class.
I'm sure he did well enough.

I need to go buy a furnace filter but just can't get up out of the recliner...

And yet you continue to watch it ;)

I was able to renew on-line the last time I needed to renew my license. However, you can only do that once, then you need to go in. Then, the next time you can renew on-line again, then you have to go in again.

In 1941, Spielberg managed to make Wendy Jo Sperber unfunny. That took a lot.

Since we had a concert on Sunday there is no band rehearsal tonight. I'm going to practice the new music anyway...I had several hints from those who think they are brilliant in our section that they want to rearrange things before the next concert (read as they want their friends who just joined us to be in the front row playing the first part with them). I would have agreed even last year, but not this year. Both our director and our music librarian told me I should be playing first and just let the new ones sit in the back row and play second. So, I'm going to stand my ground. I'm also going to practice a lot this week so the first run through of the new music I can play it better than they can
-
think I'll practice.....as soon as I sit down and move the music stand the cats tear out of the room. It's pretty funny

By that time, I will be too old to renew.

DR Cilla, Vibes you are the best at the first run through!!!
-
BK, I am sure you are thrilled with the news that Neil Patrick Harris will host next year's Oscar broadcast!
-
I like this photo of Elizabeth Pena.
-
Jane, I actually had to shut it off one hour in. I'll try for the other hour at some point, just to watch the effects scenes in Hollywood.
-
I'm smiling that you had the sense to shut it off, AND then you say you continue watching it later-LOL
-
I suppose you can fast forward to the scenes you want to see.

Well, it's time for me to leave work to go downtown to usher for an improv show. Harlequin Productions has a monthly improv show that plays on the set of whatever their current regular stage production is, on a Wednesday night when that current show isn't playing. Several friends are in it, so I'm glad I'm able to see it.
Be back later.

Just popping in after rising out of my RAGTIME coma. The show is up and running, but we made it just barely on time. We rehearsed right up to the opening night performance. That's what happens when you try and put up a monster 3 hour show with tons of choreography and with all the dialogue timed to the music (almost no vamps in the score), with 45 people... in 3 weeks. Oy.
But so far, all is well and the reviews are happy ones. Me? I ended up playing 14 people (13 other than Henry Ford). I'm not sure I recall signing up for that. Too late now.
I hope all is will with BK and the DR's. I've caught a little chat here and there when I could.
BK, congrats on Sandy's album. I was hoping to make the big do on the 20th, but it looks like I may be working another gig that evening.
Cheers! :D

Hi DR ryacko it is nice to see you and read what you have been up to. I am pleased your show is going well :)

I do my best proofreading after I hit "send." :P
So do I.

Car vibes for George

chas that was very informative. I have always wondered but thought I was the only one who didn't know
-
Thanks, DR Jane. I feel like I haven't been here in forever.
-
Break also vibes for ryako and for chas with their respective ragtimes
-
Had a bacon cheeseburger for lunch and am kind of hungry now but don't want to eat anything with too many calories. Maybe I'll go and get some chicken soup or a Subway sandwich or something like that.
-
Good to see you, ryacko.

I didn't think 1941 was a terrible movie. I just didn't think it lived up to its hype, yet it did have its moments. May he rest in peace, but I never was a fan of John Belushi.

DR TCB has two houses?

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

Is everyone in tarnation?

DR Cilla, Vibes you are the best at the first run through!!!
thanks. It really isn't a big deal. But their attitudes irritate me. If Lisa comes back ,I may move to the second row to get away from them. I like sitting with her.
