Title: FORGET IT, JAKE - IT'S CHINATOWN
Post by: bk on October 17, 2014, 01:48:11 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Chinatown, and now it is time for you to post until the Chinatown cows come home.

Good morning, all.

Well, the reports are in.  It's official.  I have a cold.  And with the final weekend of AVENUE Q to pull off.  I shall have to do my best not to sneeze and cough into everyone's face tonight.

Edit:  Three (count 'em) typos corrected.  Oy!

Tomorrow morning I'm substitute-playing a set of auditions for someone, then we have our closing night.

Sunday from 1:00 to 6:00 is the orchestra reading and sitzprobe for RAGTIME.  I hate when all of that has to be squeezed into one horrendous day.  We had to do that for Q, too.  But it'll be relaxing for me because this time all I have to do is show up and play.

Last night DR John G. posted:

I sometimes wonder what it is that these people are listening to. I agree that Jason Graae is the best thing about Roberta. He seems to be channeling Bob Hope in a way that's really eerie. He's also wonderful on And the World Goes Round. But he is not the sole delight of either album. He fits in with the ensembles. The music is the real star of both, and the reason both were made.

Exactly right.  There is a "whole" to consider here.  Both of these recordings are ensemble successes of the highest order.

BK,

I totally agree that CHINATOWN is one of the great ones.  I never tire of watching it.  If it hadn't been up against THE GODFATHER II, I'm sure it would have won the Best Picture Oscar that year.

Good morning, all! I have physical therapy this morning, then a trip to City Center to see Joshie, drop off some scores, and pick up a few more.  This evening, I'm having dinner with George Brashears, a friend from DC.  We met working summer theatre around 1970.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~  Vibes for Callie!  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Happy Anniversary, DR Vixmom !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking of CHINATOWN and actor Perry Lopez: Back in 2008, during my mother-in-law's final days in a nursing home, Lopez was slipping away in the room next to hers.  I think he passed a couple of days after her.
TOD:
Aside from the wealth of titles I got from Warner Archive this past week from which I'm currently watching the 2nd season of CHEYENNE, I also have a few titles that I have to review for my blog.  I'm currently watching THE HONORABLE WOMAN, which is somewhat confusing, but rather well done.
I also have review copies of GOOD PEOPLE and BEGIN AGAIN to view.
Did I mention earlier in the week that BABES IN TOYLAND opened on Oct. 13, 1903? The music covers puzzle me.  The song sheets are in shades of red, but the folio "Songs and Selections from BABES IN TOYLAND" is in browns and gold: same logo just different colors.
That puzzles me, and I am running late for therapy!
CHINATOWN is one of my all time favorite films also. Definitely my favorite "film noir" even though it is in Technicolor and made in the mid 1970s. I agree that everything about it is perfect, from the simple beginning with a P.I. working on a routine cheating husband case to the ever building conspiracy. And it's about the town we live in, Los Angeles, and its sordid history. I thought Faye Dunaway deserved the Oscar but the Academy voters thought differently. She did win an Oscar the very next year for NETWORK but I thought that should have been at least her second if not third with BONNIE AND CLYDE being her first. As for the score, I get goosebumps the second the opening chords are struck. It is so haunting and you just know you are if for a tragic tale.
It feels strange to be at work today.  First, I'm one of two people on "my side" of our office, and the other person has been in a meeting all morning.
Now, I'm covering a desk on the 10th floor because one person is out having surgery and the other person who would be here to spell the third person for lunch was off to Sacramento this morning for an interview for a permanent position in a different field of work.
And here I sit alone on the 10th floor with everyone in the near-vicinity gone.
Singsong, glad you enjoyed Nice Work. Did the orchestra sound particularly wonderful? I can't tell if it's the acoustics in the new hall here, which are spectacular, or if they were really that good, but the sound of the music was my favorite part of the show.
At times, John G., the orchestra sounded pretty good. But more of the time, it sounded pretty thin. And when I checked my program afterward, I noted that there were only 8 musicians; two of which were on keyboards. Hardly an "orchestra" at all!
It was a difficult week here. I think I caught a little virus that went into my weak spots--neck and shoulders--and played HAVOC. I saw the acupuncturist today. This is the new one, Dr Hu. I always think Dr Who when I hear or say her name. Lots of needles. I asked if I could have some "ear seeds," too. I had them once before and felt they helped. They're tiny seeds, often chia seeds, which are taped in the ear and massaged periodically. Last time I wore them I was expecting someone to say, "Ewww! What's in your ear?!!" but no one ever did. Since Halloween is coming I suppose I should make up some ghoulish story!
Feel-better vibes to DC Callie!
I gave a copy of this book to a friend several years ago. She used it a lot and really liked it. Don't know if addresses Callie's problems specifically, but might be worth a look.
It was a difficult week here. I think I caught a little virus that went into my weak spots--neck and shoulders--and played HAVOC. I saw the acupuncturist today. This is the new one, Dr Hu. I always think Dr Who when I hear or say her name. Lots of needles. I asked if I could have some "ear seeds," too. I had them once before and felt they helped. They're tiny seeds, often chia seeds, which are taped in the ear and massaged periodically. Last time I wore them I was expecting someone to say, "Ewww! What's in your ear?!!" but no one ever did. Since Halloween is coming I suppose I should make up some ghoulish story!
Thanks!  I have lots of books on cat health but haven't seen this one.  The vet gave me some Onsair, but I'm not sure I want to use it.  It's an NSAID which cats don't tolerate.  It's only to be used three days in a row.  So it's a very short term solution.
Looks like the Wizard of Oz and the Symphony in Sioux City will be sold out.  The Orpheum holds about 2500 people.  That's great for Sioux City. Not sure if they've sold out before
As DR Kate said, Chinatown was one of our Aunt Betty's favorites.  She saw it multiple times.  I don't think I ever saw it.  I do remember my former supervisor (who would just talk at her desk to no one in particular) one day decided to spoil the ending of the movie.  I'll have to watch it anyway!
Did okay tonight.  Only coughed a few times, and my nose mostly behaved.  And it was a good show with a great audience.
Health vibes to DC Callie from Nicky and TCB!
Thanks!  It's not something she'll recover from, it's just something I'll have to figure out how to help ease her pain.  I read about a heated window seat for cats.  It only heats up to 15 degrees more than the ambient temperature and it shuts off when they get off of it.  I'm going to check into things like that.  I think the heat would feel good.
Thanks everyone for Callie vibes.  I knew she had arthritis, but I was concerned that she may have had other problems too.  Everything else checks out, so I'm just going to keep giving her back rubs, and see what else I can do for her.  She LOVES back rubs.  I've been doing that for a while now
