Well, you've read the notes, the notes took the day and have been detained for questioning, and now it is time for you to post until the taking the day cows come home.

Good morning, all!  The curse of Daylight Savings? My internal clock tells me that 5:30 is still 6:30, so I was wide awake at 5:30.  Once I realized I wasn't going back to sleep, I got up, dressed, and voted.  I'm now on my first cuppa coffee, and at 7, I will call Fed Ex with a shipping inquiry.

I must be out of here at 8 to catch the first of two buses to 23rd and Fifth Avenue. I have an appointment with my podiatrist. I will then stop at Toyland, pick up some more things, and head home.  I've got a really tangled mess with "I Still See Elisa" from Paint Your Wagon: the full score is in A, going up to B-flat on the second refrain, and the orchestra parts and vocal score are in C with no key change.  I have to mentally transpose every single note as I check it out an it's exhausting.

More coffee!

I was listening to a rerun of Car Talk on my radio. One of the NPR channels (satellite) runs 3hr block in the afternoon and then repeats them in the evening. the show were from 11/2006. At first I thought it was a joke but AP news confirmed it.

Their retirement was most likely because of the insidious disease was detected at the time. I'm glad that these shows are being rerun. It's like they'll always be there.

UPDATE

Saw my knee doctor. He wants me to be off my feet for another 4 weeks. If there is no improvement then he'll talk surgery. He doesn't want to rush into surgery. If there is no improvement then he will go in "clean" the area. The last thing he wants to do is a knee replacement.

DR Jane (or any other DRs) have you ever listened to an audio book?

My library just got three new audio books.  Two are for books that I am going to be reading in the next few weeks. One is for a book that I just read a month or two ago.  I have never listened to an audio book before but I am curious.  So I put in a reservation for the two that I will be reading. I thought maybe I could try to listen at the same time i am reading the book that goes with it (not listen while i am reading, but alternate or listen to some passages after i have read them).

I know a lot of people who love audio books. But i have been hesitant because i like reading and feel like listening would be taking something away from the book.  I am always curious at people who write book reviews after only listening to the audio.

Although I have 6 of my books and stage plays on audio, I have yet to get a handle on this market.  I certainly know that there is a big one, but I'm not quite sure where it is.  (My accountant tells me that he listens to books when driving.)

The only time that I have listened to books on audio is when I had a 30-60 drive to my office every day.  Listening to a book helped pass the time.

Good morning, all.

Well, last night was crazy.  I dozed in front of a movie, and thought I would have no trouble continuing a nice sleep once in bed.  I was wrong.  I went to bed, fell asleep, woke up again at around 1:30 AM, and was awake till past 4:00 AM.  I think I just made up most of that.  It's just a damned good thing I had nothing going on this morning and could luxuriate in extra sleep.  Holy moley.

Coffee!

Just had a little chat with the production manager of the shoot.  He had a little attitude when he opened his trap so I shut that down so fast I think it shocked him.  He actually said, "We have the right to park on a city street" to which I replied "You really don't want to do down that road with me because I will have you out of here so fast it will make your head spin."  He then offered me money, which I refused, and then said they'd had to improvise because some neighbors where they were supposed to park hadn't moved their cars and they didn't want to tow them - I suggested they tow them immediately.  He then said he'd save me a space across the street and I said that would be fine.

What I gather from people who listen to the audio books is the right storyteller can enhance the enjoyment & often bring out the humor in the book.  Often they will begin choosing the books they listen to by who is narrating.

I don't like listening to audio books because my mind can very easily wander and then I realize that I've lost my place in the story and trying to get back to what I remember is a big hassle.  I know several people who love to listen when they drive long distances.  One coworker has a 42 minute drive each way and he can pretty much listen to half a disc each way, so a whole disc (about 80 minutes) in a day.  And when some audio books can have as many as 40 discs, it can certainly take a LONG time to get through them.

Well, either way it's all just story-telling.  Whether you read a book or listen to a CD, the author wrote the story.  Does it really matter how you take it in (other than if your mind wanders too much ;) )?  But then as Jane said, the narrator can make a difference.  For other coworkers of mine, the narrator can make a HUGE difference.

Yes I have heard of people who do audio books on their commute to work or while they are on the treadmill or doing chores.  I just don't see listening to a book as being equivalent to reading a book.  But I am curious.

I'm sure the narrator can make a huge difference.  I just find it interesting cause I review books and I see a bunch of people review the audio books and I just don't think that it can be the same experience.  Although I really shouldn't talk since i have never listened to an audio book.  But I just see that one of the ones is ready for me to pick up.  Not sure how i will do it since i also have the book.  I think i might just read and then maybe listen to what i have read as i am falling asleep.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!  I left here about 10am, voted, then went to Dayton for the midday meeting of the grantwriters.  On the way home I stopped at the library, Starbucks, and Dorothy Lane Market.  It was sunny and beautiful when I left home and cloudy, blustery, and a little drizzly when I returned.

DR Jennifer, I'm a huge audiobook fan and, yes, the narrator can make all the difference.  My habit developed when I had a long commute and continues now for my boring basement walking and when I'm knitting.  When I was working and had a deadline to finish a book, I'd do what I called a "power read" - listening in the car and reading the book at home.  If you're listening to nonfiction, you might want the dead-tree book at hand for illustrations.  I listened to Stephen Ambrose's Undaunted Courage and Cheryl Strayed's Wild, but had to check out the book to look at the maps.

There are books I've read with my ears that I probably wouldn't have gotten through with my eyes - Annie Dillard's The Living and Geraldine Brooks' Caleb's Crossing, among others.

My favorite narrators are Kate Reading, Grace Conlin, C. J. Critt, and Orlagh Cassidy.

The time change is affecting me, too, but the other way.  I'm going to bed and getting up...and getting to work...even later!  It's not supposed to work that way! >:(

We are supposed to have gained an hour but I don't think it works that way.  We just wake up earlier in the morning.

My mind can also wonder but worse is when I fall asleep reading.  I can imagine the story going on and on while I sleep.  I really like that the Nook saves my place when I fall asleep, unless it falls on my nose and wakes me up first.

I'm ready to chew lead and spit some tacks, that's what I'm ready to do.

I've been wasting a ton of time on paying an invoice I should NOT be paying and I've been trying to get "good" numbers (i.e. accounts we call "chart fields") that our pay system will accept on behalf of the doofus department for whom we are doing this "favor."

Use this, they say.  Use that, they say.  We don't know why it won't work.  Why don't you call...?   And I am ready to explode.  It is not MY job to invent the correct accounts.  I enter the information I am given into our system.  I simply need GOOD information.

I've tried this FOUR times today...each time is a new complete entry of data, and I'm sick to death of it.

LOL  Listening or reading still qualifies you to get the book read.  I get frustrated, but don't say anything, when people don't complete the book.  I have never not read a book for a discussion.  I do admit in my old age if I really don't like it I super speed read it, something I never used to do.

I've listened to them in the car on a trip.  I once drove around the block about 4 times to hear the end of the book.  Why I didn't just park and listen I don't know, but I didn't

I used to listen to books all the time when I had my long commute (1 + hour) to work (I drove)

I also have used them while out gardening

and when we take long drives (such as our drive from NY to Florida)  we always have a few books on tape to listen to on the way

I've listened to them in the car on a trip.  I once drove around the block about 4 times to hear the end of the book.  Why I didn't just park and listen I don't know, but I didn't

That is funny you drove instead of parking.  I guess it felt like you should be driving as usual.

I kept thinking it was going to end and was having trouble finding a parking spot so I just kept driving and listening

While BK was visiting Dr Chew today I was visiting my own dentist. I really like this new dentist, but every time I see him he tells me about more than needs to be done. Today it was to replace two leaky crowns. I have no doubt it needs to be done, but the $$$$ signs keep appearing before my eyes.

Health vibes to DR Mike. It must be trying your patience for this to go on for so long. I hope it's resolved soon and satisfactorily.

I used to listen to audio books. It was during a very trying period healthwise. As much as I love to read it was nice to just lie back and listen. It's a different sort of experience than reading. I enjoyed them.

My former vet called today and asked about Callie.  I told her I was changing vets.  Apparently no one had mentioned that to her.  She was pretty shocked.  I told her it was about expense and distance.  She said she can't change that. They aren't that much more than the new place for average visits - I didn't realize I had a first time discount - but the after hours cost at the old vet was $238 just to show up, not including any treatment.  The new place is $119.   The new vet is 18 blocks from my house, the other is about 9 miles.  I don't use after hours very often, but when Callie has an episode, it can happen two or three times.  That's a huge difference in expense, and in the winter the distance is a big deal.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is the book I'm now listening to. Excellent novel. I think it just won the National Book Award.

I think I have finished Mom''s cookbook. I sent off my last set of corrections to my sister, and that is now off my plate.

Tonight I listened to something I would normally have gotten to a long time before this, but I had felt I needed to get comfortable with the actual score of RAGTIME, so I stuck with the cast album and other such sources.  Until tonight, when I suddenly found myself with some free sitting back and listening time, and I put on a little album we like to call "RAGTIME: THEMES FROM THE HIT MUSICAL", featuring one Brad Ellis Little Big Band and produced by one BK.  Well, well, well.  It's great!   :)

I didn't mention the things about the vet that bothered me, including that I really don't like the vet who bought the business from the vet who retired.  My vet went with the deal, but I was always worried when she wasn't there.   I did ask her for Callie's x-ray, which she agreed to take a picture of and email to the new vet.  They already faxed over her file so I feel pretty good about that. They never really did anything wrong, but I just wasn't comfortable with them.

I did cancel the appointments for Rick and Boo and rescheduled them at the new place. I still got in on Saturday and they'll be set. The new place has two young female vets. I met one of them with Callie.  Saturday the other vet will be there. It will be nice to have met both vets and see how they interact with the cats.

Amazon is having some excellent pre-Christmas specials. I'm not usually an impulse buyer, but they have LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD, one of my favorites, on sale at 77% off! I ordered it. It'd be nice to watch over the holidays.

Watching the Ronald Coleman version of Kismet. Didn't realize that Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen wrote songs for this version. Heard one that was just lovely. And while Stothart's score isn't Borodin, it's really lovely, atmospheric and ersatz exotic in the way only old-time Hollywood could muster.

Cilla, I think it's good you told the old vet your reasons. She may not be able to change anything, but it's still good for her to know. Practitioners of all sorts lose patients and frequently don't know why. It's best to know.

I didn't have any problem with telling her that. I am overprotective of Callie, so I have to be careful not to let my emotions get too involved in my decisions

I have no memory whatsoever of what Ragtime, the Brad Ellis album, sounds like anymore - it sold incredibly well because we beat out the cast album.  I'll give it a listen.
