Title: THE RELAXED NOTES
Post by: bk on September 23, 2004, 12:00:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now relaxed, you are now at one with the notes, and you are now ready to post until the relaxed cows come home.

When I lived in Boulder there was a regular summer program of silent films with live accompaniment at the wonderful Chautauqua. It was one of my favorite things about living there. I'm too tired now to write about favorite films. In the morning.

Well I am shameful but I have not seen a silent film in full as far as I know! How sad is that? I must get on that. I will add it to my list of things to do before I die. I may even add it to my list of things to do before my life is over. (Also known as the day I get married.) :)

I do have one bit of exciting news, well at least exciting to me. Our new music building here at Ball State is officially finished. I got to go into the new performance hall for the first time today and even got to sing in there a little bit. It is a gorgeous space. It seats 600 and is tunable. You can literally change the acoustics of the room to fit the group performing! I can share more on it if you are interested but I am waiting til I can find (or take) better pictures of it myself. The new building also houses our Music Technology program with three recording studios, and  or 9 other studios for the students to work in. Here are some pictures from one of the studios which I think are wonderful also. The wiring of the building is quite astounding. All the performance rooms in the building and the studios are wired through a central server so you can do mixing and such from the sound boards in the studios for concerts being recorded in the hall. I don't even undertand a great deal of it. The performance hall is now one of the best college halls in the nation. They had Midori (Violinist) performing with MacDonald (Pianist and sorry that I do not remember his first name.) The choral room is also in the hall and compared to what we used to have to rehearse in. (A regular tile floor classroom) this is heaven. Even our choir room is tunable! Sorry to ramble so but I am so excited! This is a big step up with us. Our old performance space was basically a glorified lectur hall. We also have Simon Carrington coming to work with us in a few weeks and do a concert. The music we are learning for this is gorgeous and I can't wait for my first performance in this hall.

Ok here is one of the inside of Sursa Recital Hall, but it doesn't do the hall justice. Sorry to subject you to my ranting, but I feel like a kid with a new 21 million dollar toy.  ;D

Congrats, Joey. Looks great.

I can't get to sleep, so here are some of my favorite silents...
CITY LIGHTS, of course.
THE GOLD RUSH
SAFETY LAST - love Harold Lloyd!
SHERLOCK JR.
THE GENERAL
THE MARK OF ZORRO

There are at least 10 others that aren't as famous which I saw in Boulder and loved. (Can't think of a single title at the moment -- but it's late.) A terrific piano player named Hank Troy would accompany the films, improvising (for the most part) for an hour or two. It was such fun!

Favorite Silent Movies:

CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI- Just brilliant, if only for the images.  And the twist ending is chilling.  I highly recommend the original.

NOSFERATU- Another great horror that I believe can still scare people in this modern age.

Anything with HAROLD LLOYD and BUSTER KEATON.  I have to admit I prefer Keaton to Chaplin.

And.....

Mel Brooks' SILENT MOVIE- It took some guts to make a silent movie that 'late' in the history of cinema (can you imagine a major studio greenlighting this movie today?).   Plus, it is really funny.

Despite all the usual suspects (Chaplin,Keaton, et. al.) I love the Joan Crawford trilogy that starts with "Our Dancing Daughters".  Compare these with some of the films Mommie Dearest made late in her career and you really se what Hollywood  can do to an actress.

...We also have Simon Carrington coming to work with us in a few weeks and do a concert.

I loved him on DYNASTY....

Congrats on the new Hall and rehearsal spaces, Joey.

I must confess that I too don't think I have ever seen a silent movie all the way through, save Mr. Brooks' SILENT MOVIE.  Therefore, I will be abstaining (courteously) (oooh, a 1776 reference!) from the TOD.

I was not going to be suckered into LOST.  But I did find that one of the movie stations was running THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES last night, and started watching that.  Unfortunately, I was also doing some laundry, and since I couldn't devote my full attention I kind of lost track of it.  I do remember it as being a really terrific film, and was sorry I got lost in the middle of it.  However, abandoning TBYOOL allowed me to watch "Good Eats" and take my 10:15 nap just as he was getting to the Bananas Foster (at least I think that's what Alton was up to....)

Yes, lots of troubles trying to post this morning but now all is well with the world (and with HHW).

Now to the topic of the day. Favorite silent movies:

Mysterious Island (1929)

The Lost World (1925)

King of Kings (1927)

A Christmas Carol (1910)

The Ten Commandments (1923)

Favorite silent movie by far is CITY LIGHTS which I think leaves all others standing in the dust. I do like THE GENERAL but need to watch it again. I have a videotape of it made by a reputable company which will have to do until a pristine Region 1 version of it comes along. Seems like I read that one is on the way. I know Keaton's first three MGM films (two silents and his first talkie) are coming from Warners, but none of them show him at his best.

I do love SUNRISE and think WINGS is grand entertainment. Garbo's silents, while lavishly praised and great crowd pleasers in their day, bore me to tears. I do like Valentino's THE EAGLE a lot. I'm not sure I've ever seen any of Gloria Swanson's silents.

All of Chaplin's silent features are wonderful (I've written here extensively about my growing enthusiasm for THE CIRCUS), and I've only seen a few of Keaton's (SHERLOCK, JR. STEAMBOAT BILL, JR.); once we get as good a versions of them as we have of Chaplin's output, I'll be more eager to watch them.

There are lots of terrific silent action films: those of Fairbanks and Gilbert and Valentino and Lon Chaney's films are certainly worth watching.

Those of you haven't experienced the wonder of silent movies should rent one and treat yourself to a new experience.

Those of you who were a little critical of LOST's opening episode last night might be interested to know that the pilot episode was actually two hours long. ABC (in its infinite wisdom) decided to divide the pilot into two episode rather than showing it in one two hour slot. Maybe that's why some of you felt the storytelling of the episode wasn't complete enough for you. The truth is that you've only seen half of the first episode.

I actually enjoyed "Lost" last night and will tune in to at least a few more episodes before deciding whether it will be regular viewing or not.  It reminded me not so much of "Lord of the Flies" or "Jurassic Park" as it did that great short-lived 45 minute experiment half-season ABC drama "The New People."  Does anyone remember that one?

And I, too, am experiencing slowness at HHW, so to speak.

Yep.  It shared it's 90 minute slot with Music Scene, hosted by David Steinberg and numbering Lily Tomlin (in her TV series debut) amongst its regulars.

Dan, remember the Music Scene sign off each week?  "Check, please."  My childhood favorite Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 performed semi-live on that show--Lani looked like she was having a little snit-fit.  They lip synched but for some reason Sergio played live acoustic piano over the pre-recorded Rhodes.  The thing about Music Scene was they advertised only live performances, but I distinctly remember a lot of lip-synching goin' on.  :)

That last post took over a minute to, uh, post.  Somebody's still abusing their limits around here.  They need a good rectifying, I tell ya, a good one!

Silent Movies:  I've always been a sucker for the silent melodramas such as Orphans of the Storm, Broken Blossoms, Greed and Flesh and the Devil (would love to see Queen Kelly someday.)  I also like the horror movies--Phantom of the Opera, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari.  And Chaplin and Keaton, they go without saying (but i guess I did, anyway.)

The one live number I remember from MS was when the producers, evidently dismayed that The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" was the number one song for the third week in a row, had it performed by the Staple Family backed by a large gospel choir.  My sister and I were rolling on the floor. (Rolling on the floor laughing, you pervs!)

Good Morning!

-It took quite a while on my end for the posts to come up just now too.. Just FYI...

Otherwise, sorry for being errant and truant last night, and not in my usual late-denizen mode.  I started working a project that ended up taking a little longer than expected... Next thing I knew, it was past 1:00AM, so...  And I've been going through some more mail this morning just to make sure I haven't overlooked anything - such as bills - while I've been out here in L.A.  So far, so good.  Whew!

Well, I need to get back to my work, and then it's over to Museum Row...

Silent movies - makes me think of some audience members at Chautauqua in Boulder. These people would bring their small children -- which is fine -- but then would read the titles to them throughout the entire film in a perfectly normal loud voice. Aaarggh!

Yes, I do remember it.  I particularly remember that it had a lot of problems with the writing.

Hopefully, with Abrams at the helm, Lost won't have the writing problems.  This also explains (sort of) why season four of Alias won't get going until January: at least Abrams has the sense not to spread himself too thinly with two projects (I hope).

Matt H the opening scenes in LOST were very gripping.  Thanks for suggestion the show.  I haven’t watched CSI: NY yet.

I’m pleased to say Bogies feels better today.  Now we have to keep this problem from recurring.  It could be related to his early kidney failure.

Joey I enjoyed the photos and reading about the new theater.  It sounds very exciting.

Over lunch I picked up the Bay Cities CD issue of Golden Boy, executive produced by our own BK! $8.99, what a deal. I also got a copy of Here's Love for $6.99. It looks like they either bought or got someone's collection but I already have much of what was in the bins.

Since I couldn't post this morning here is a late afternoon picture from our vacation.

We're done with the State Fair pictures. This one was taken at the new Ikea which opened up across from the Mall of America.  We had lunch and then spent a couple of hours browsing. The lunch was actually quite good. We had the world famous Ikea Swedish Meatballs (it is a Swedish company after all, and we were in the land of Scandanavian descent).

I had trouble logging in earlier but am now glad that all has been fixed.

Today has been very productive: I went to three classes and a conference, got my picture taken (albeit a God awful one) for my public transport student discount card and am now in the library researching with my group on Atlantic Canada's voting behaviour.

The last item on that list is far from interesting... grrr...

I believe I will have to sup with the members of my group after we meet with our professor and debrief on what we have and haven't found on our topic.  Luckily the prof, despite her predisposition towards assigning her students boring project subjects, is extremely nice and intelligent to boot.  The group members are also very ambitious - so at least there's no fear in getting bogged down with all the work! :)

DR Joey, the new rehearsal hall looks delish.  Does anyone else find it fascinating that when a space is acoustically correct it almost always LOOKS beautiful too?  Nature works out nicely :)

OH...

DR Joey et al et frank et vince...  Robert (Bob) McDonald is Midori's accompanist.  Although there's something interesting about having a single-named accompanist accompanying a single-named violinist.  ;)

I heard through the grapevine today that last night's concert was amazing and Midori and Robert MacDonald said this hall is in the top 3 of the best halls that they have ever performed in.

Question for all regarding DR Joey's new theatre:  is there a proper way of "christening" a new venue?  I don't recall ever hearing about such a practice, but ya would think that there would be some kind of time-honored ritual.

In any case, congrats and good luck with the new hall, Joey!

Well the Midori and Robert MacDonald concert was supposed to be the christening, but with our sneaking in there yesterday afternoon to sing a song (we really didn't sneak in. They let us come in there to sing.) Anyway we "christened" it ourselves yesterday afternoon. The grand opening ceremonies are this Saturday. I would love to be here for them but I will be off on a church retreat. So I am not exactly sure how all these events fit together in the progression of christening and the hall being opened, but I think it has been officially christened.

My favorite silent movie is King John. It's three minutes of a guy dying in a chair while people stand around and watch him.

I had another adventure today on The Fifth Floor. I'll post about it after Arthur is over.

Evening all.  Sorry to be E & T, I was a bit under the weather but am on the mend now.

Nice pictures of the new theater, Joey!  Who knows what future stars will grace it’s stage?

I have a photo to share that was passed around work today.  I was told it was taken after hurricane Ivan passed through.   Neat, huh?

My story of the day.  When I made it to my desk yesterday, I found one of my little dragon statues with a note attached, “Stop Dragon your heart around.”  I was in no mood for games and asked a couple of people who had put that on my desk.  The next thing I knew several people said I had a “Secret Admirer” and were getting quite a charge out of it.

Well, it only lasted about ten minutes because a friend came over and asked if the T-shirt design contest for the Heart Walk was over because she had an idea for a shirt.  Yes, you guessed it.

Sigh. My luck.  I had a full blown romance on my hands and I was hurting to bad to enjoy it while it lasted.

I don’t think I have ever sat through a whole silent movie either.  I have seen clips of NOSFERATU and I agree it was very well done.

Jane, Get your back back vibes!   ;D

Is it just here in SF Bay Area, or has fall began everywhere?  I just LOVE fall, it's very nice to have it here at last.  Tonight is preview for a production of "Cabaret" that I'm playing keyboards for.  It's not bad as "Cabaret's" go, sticking mostly to the material in the 1987 revival rather than the darkness of the 1998 revival.

There is one elevator in the English building that will take you to The Fifth Floor no matter what button you press. And then once you get up there, it's like you're in another dimension. I think the whole thing sounds like a really cheesy movie.

I found my way up there today because I needed to get a paper signed by the department chair. When I got to his office, the lady at the desk told me that the department chair wasn't in today. But then she said, "Give it to me and I'll go have him sign it." So I gave her the paper and she went through a door, and when she came back, the department chair had signed my paper. It's like Bizarro World where everything is the opposite.

Then I had to go turn the paper in to some other office on the first floor of the Social Sciences building. I didn't really know where I was going, so I wasn't sure if I was in the right place when I got there. So I asked the lady at the desk in this office if I was in the right place to turn in my paper. She asked me, "Is it a dog?" (Apparently in the Social Sciences building, it's The First Floor that's like Bizarro World.)

I finally realized that she was asking if my paper was supposed to be turned in to the Department of Graduation (D.O.G.) because that was where I was. I hope that was the right place because I gave it to her and left.

As for silent movies...I know I've seen a few, but not many.  Last month, however, I bought a set (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AINLS/104-9646719-5753563?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance) of four remastered DVDs that included "How Green Was My Valley," "Gentleman's Agreement," "All About Eve" and "Sunrise."  I got the set because "Sunrise" (only available in the set) had a new score composed by former Olympia, Washington resident Tim Brock and played by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra!  I knew him!  I have the CD of his score for "Sunrise (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000005TAL/qid=1095987115/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-9646719-5753563?v=glance&s=music)", as well as his score for "Berlin-Symphony Of A Great City (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000005TAM/qid=1095987041/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-9646719-5753563?v=glance&s=classical)," another silent movie (although, I don't own that on video or DVD).  When he lived here in Olympia and had composed the scores for these movies, they showed "Sunrise" with a world premiere performance of the score played live by the Olympia Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tim!  They also showed "Berlin" and played the score live, as well...unless it was the world premiere of the "Berlin" score and they showed "Sunrise," also. ::) Either way, it was quite a wonderful evening, as were the movies.

Well, I just got in from doing some errands (which included scoring a few pieces of Sees chocolates at the mall - hey, some errands have to be fun!). So before hitting the mall for chocolate, I had things to do on Ventura. I parked on a sidestreet which had signs up saying that there was 2 hours parking from 8 AM to 6 PM and permit parking after that. I have to admit I didn't check the signs carefully - but there was plenty of parking along the street - so it's not as if I took up the only spot. I came back after doing what I had to do and found a  $40. ticket on my car! And it was written at 6:35! They must lurk, waiting for the "illegal hour" to hit. Aaaargh!

Ann Hampton Callaway's show was a delight. She's very much in touch with her audience (about 100 of us, at Toronto's Top of the Senator jazz club). "Where's That Rainy Day" and Carole King's "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" were the standouts. She sang a couple of songs from her new CD, "Slow" (one of which she co-wrote with Carole King). The patter between songs was generally bright and funny. At the end of the evening she asked audience members for phrases describing Toronto. Then she sat down at the piano and strung together an amusing number incorporating everything from "buying shoes on Bloor Street" to "when Mel [our infamous former mayor] called in the army." The crowd had a good time - and so did she.

I'm here. I was twice modifying an earlier post. Earlier I had said I was heading out to see Ann Hampton Callaway at The Top Of The Senator. The Jazz listings at the Senator spelled her name Calloway, so that was the first modification. Then I checked and saw that Callaway was correct after all.

What's to get ready for Yom Kippur?

Awhile back, around this time of year, I was at the offices of a large publishing company. One of the senior editors told me that he knew Yom Kippur was coming up. He understood that it was the biggest holiday of the year, and he had heard that the food is great on Jewish holidays. So, he concluded, "you must really eat well on Yom Kippur."

She looks so scared in that picture. One thing I find funny is she is deathly afraid of water (Mainly getting sprayed with the hose and taking baths.) The funny think is if you leave the hook on the spray nozzle on the hose and walk away from it she loves attacking the stream of water, but as soon as you pick it up she scampers away and hides in the bushes. (We got her from a neighbor who had gotten her as a stray so we have no idea why she is so afraid of water when there are people around.)

I am told, Dear Reader Jane, that Advil is a superior antidote to pain than Tylenol.

Random picture I took this summer out the screen door of my bedroom looking across the street to the neighbors yard and the field beyond. Not very good but I sort of like what the screen did to the picture.

The dog of a friend I ran into at the Farmers Market last week...

Cute dog.  Cuter legs.  What does the rest of this canine's guardian look like?

Very Jewish-looking. And very married. Sorry!

I am back from Little Shop of Horrors.  Lovely cast.  Lovely production.  Terrific score.  Absurdly overamplified sound design.  (Ear-splitting sound levels must be a contractual requirement for every musical that comes through the Ahmanson Theatre.)  Special mention should be made of Tari Kelly's--you should pardon the expression--delicious performance as Audrey.  The puppetry/machinery for Audrey II is noteworthy, too.

Last picture of the night! Here is a picture of all the cast, production team, and crew from Seussical when I did it this summer. It was such a fun show. Sorry it is not that great. It was scanned in.

I am not a superstitious person and I live at a church so I have all the protection from those 6's that I need. :-)

Has this site gone to the dogs?  I'm back from my hot tub sojourn - quite marvy, and now I'm totally relaxed and I must eat a bowl of cereal or some such foodstuff.

Good Evening!

Back from the show... And about to head to bed.  I was up late(!) last night, and I got up early again today.  -And, I had another breakfast courtesy of the senoras at the Wilshire/Vermont Metro station.

I really didn't do much today.  Was kind of a weird day.  My "day" just seemed to drag along for no apparent reason.

My brother, Jay, will finally be coming up from San Diego tomorrow to see me and the show.  We shall see... He was supposed to come up today, but called me around 3:30 to tell me that he was still in San Diego... So, the plan tomorrow is to meet up before the show, go to dinner, then the show.  Then he'll be heading back to San Diego after the show tomorrow night since he has to work on Saturday.

Well, I'm tired, and I need some sleep.  I have some running around to do tomorrow, and I want to make sure to get all of my "errands" done.

And now I shall do my impression of a Wussburger...

TA-DA!!!!

<POOF!>

*Oh, DR Jane - Yes, I'm now staying in the Wilshire Miracle Mile neighborhood for the closing days of the show.  I'm liking it.

Goodnight.

Good Letterman line I just heard... He was talking about Cat Stevens being taken off a diverted plane and sent home...

Ok quic explanation before bed. My chrch up here at school has the church itself and then it also has a beautiful stone house with a detached garage of the same stone. (The house and Garage were built in the 30's by a wealthy banker) When the church bought the property they built a hall behing the house and just in the last few years did a major remodeling and added a nice big church to the back of the origianl hall. The house itself is used for church and community functions on the first floor, an offices on the second floor. The garage had butler quarters upstairs that was remodeled at some point so there was just one small grage are in it and the rest of the first floor of the gearage was converted to a living room, kitchen and bathroom with another bathroom upstairs. Our church has a program for college students where we live here at the Newman Center (Officially what we call the house) We help clean the church and the property, meet for prayer every night, and go to all the various goings on that the Newman Center offers (Something every night) along with an internship with the church (mine is music). We get all this and all we pay is 200 a semester plus cable and phone. We have five girls on the third floor of the house and 3 guys here in the old garage which we call the cottage. It is quite fun we always have lots of people over on the weekends because evryone loves coming to the Newman Center just to hang out on the weekends as well as coming to all ths stuff during the week. We sort of also serve as the people who welcome anyone and everyone who stops by and try to make them fell as at home as possible.

It is quite a lot of responsibility but also so much fun. And now onto the next lovely day of posting! :-) Maybe I'll borrow my roomate's camera and take some pictures of the property before my desk hour if you would like.
