Title: KLAATU BARADA NIKTO
Post by: bk on November 24, 2014, 12:07:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little Klaatu barada nikto to them and stood still, and now it is time for you to post until the barada nikto cows come home.

Here's the complete blurb:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack to one of the most iconic science fiction films ever made:

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

Music Composed by Bernard Herrmann
Conducted by Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman and Lionel Newman

To say that the 1951 film The Day the Earth Stood Still is a benchmark of its genre is an understatement. Along with The Thing From Another World, released earlier that same year, The Day the Earth Stood Still ushered in a steady flow of pictures where flying saucers and monsters reflected the Cold War paranoia of the atomic age. But director Robert Wise’s film stands above them all. It’s no surprise that every fantasy filmmaker—including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, John Carpenter, Peter Jackson, James Cameron and Christopher Nolan—has cited the influence of this picture upon their own.   The film did everything right – from a superb screenplay by Edmund H. North (from a story by Harry Bates), to the beautiful cinematography by Leo Tover, to the stellar cast of Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe and Billy Gray (having a cast of great actors playing the reality of the story is what helps ground the film and make it timeless).  The Day the Earth Stood Still, simply put, is a masterpiece and one of the most important science fiction films ever made.

Deserving of equal credit for the film’s uniqueness and success, is, of course, the music score by Bernard Herrmann.  The Day the Earth Stood Still stands among Herrmann’s most memorable achievements (in a career filled with them), and may possibly be his most innovative. At the fore, of course, is the use of the theremin (two, actually, one “high” and one “low,” played by Samuel Hoffmann and Paul Shure).  But that’s not all that makes this score unique – in contrast to Herrmann’s famous strings-only score for Hitchcock’s Psycho, The Day the Earth Stood Still utilizes none—unless one counts the meticulous punctuations of harp, piano (two of them) and cinema’s first use of the electric violin (performed by Felix Slatkin). Also absent are woodwinds, a choice that allows the score’s evocative brass clusters to take center stage. The sound field is further dominated by the versatile resonances of the Wurlitzer pipe organ, offset by percussion instruments sitting in the extreme high and low ends of the frequency spectrum.

The Day the Earth Stood Still was previously available on Arista over twenty years ago.  That edition is obviously long out of print.  A complete version of the score was available briefly as an extra in the laserdisc release of the film, and that version was also included in the multi-disc and very expensive Bernard Herrmann at Fox box on Varese Sarabande – that release sold out instantly.   Given the limited availability of the box, we felt it was very important to make this classic score available again for the fans who missed out on it.   It has been given a new, fresh mastering and sounds absolutely incredible in that wonderful early Fox stereo sound that was as unique as the Herrmann score.  New liner notes by Mike Matessino.

The Day the Earth Stood Still is limited to 1200 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping.   CDs will ship by the first week of January, although our hope is to get it shipped before Christmas.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Sorry for my absence yesterday, but I was trying to complete all the online certification training for my job. I still have a ways to go....

I sincerely regret that I have still not listened to the new Sandy album. There's that plus a lot of other things that just did not get done this weekend.      :-[

Will definitely order this CD.

I had to look to see which one I have.  It's the Fox one, which is the same that came with the laserdisc except for not being "24k gold".  And I never got around to acquiring that particular "signature" box set.

Haven't listened to this or watched the film in several years, so it will be nice to do both.  It should even inspire me to dust off the theremin, review the instructional tapes that came with it, and try playing along a little bit.  But I always say I'm going to do that.  So, we'll see.  We shall see.

Good morning, all!  I slept quite poorly, and all I now remember is a strange dream involving a midwest theatre dept., moving in or out with bookshelves and books to deal with, a married couple who were into avant-garde performance art, and how glad I was to get out of bed.

I'm going nowhere today except to the bank; it's another work day here.

The bad news about my new neighbor? She has a dog.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman - Ronald Stein
Attack of the Puppet People - Albert Glasser

DR MBARNUM is not the person who sent me the Frances Farmer items.....it was another collector......who used to work for a FOX television station in the NY area.....as a film editor.

TOD

Too many to try to name, but certainly today's release belongs on any short list.
So here's a short list:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (Herrmann)
Blade Runner (Vangelis)
Star Wars (Williams)
Alien (Goldsmith)
Planet of the Apes (Goldsmith)

And yes, the wonderful scores of Stein and Glasser and others from that period.

I hesitated naming those "big production" films of the late '70s / early '80s.  Just because.  But those scores truly are magnificent.  I can actually listen to the complete Star Wars soundtrack and get so lost in some of the music that I momentarily forget what film it is.

I went to lunch with my 5 year old niece on Saturday.  She was sitting at the end of the table. The waiter left a pitcher of water right in front of her.  Then a while later nobody is paying attention to her and her hand is sort of wet.  I think she was touching the ice cubes. :)

My sister was mad.  I didn't think it was that big a deal. Kids are always touching the ice cubes in their own glasses.  And while it would seem obvious not to stick your hand in a pitcher of water it might not be that obvious to a kid. :)

I had to tell the waiter to spill out the water so he didn't serve any other tables with it.  He was actually very funny about it.  He said, "oh yum, I'm going to go pour myself a glass right away." :)

I am looking forward to watching Dancing With The Stars tonight. I am curious who people here are cheering for?

I would actually be okay with any of the four remaining couples winning. They are all great.

I am not 100% sure who I want to win.  I know my least favorite is probably Sadie and Mark.  I do love Janel and Val.  I also love Derek and think that Bethany has been doing amazing lately.  I also really like Witney and Alfonso.  Depending on how the freestyles go I will decide who to vote for tonight.

I am curious who people think will win?  I think it depends on the freestyle. If Alfonso is able to go all out then i think he has a good shot.  But I would love to see Val win and think that he and Janel are actually the best dancers (although all four are amazing).

While I was selecting an apple pie, a Japanese woman came over, pointed to a pumpkin pie, and asked, in stilted English, "Not pumpkin?" "No," I replied. "Why not?" I explained that I don't really care for pumpkin pie. She thought for a moment, then said, "Why?" I don't know, I just never have. I like pumpkin soup and used to love pumpkin ice cream. I found the encounter quite amusing.

My neighbor then came out. He must have clicked his remote entry at the same time I did, but he was no where in sight, so I'm surprised it worked. But I know nothing about mechanical things.

Tomorrow I'm slated for my dental work. I've never had this procedure done before and don't know a lot about it. I'm told he'll be drilling. Eight teeth are involved and I'm also told that he must do all eight at once. I'm hoping to have a little chat first, while I can still speak. He's a nice guy--I like him and am very glad to have found him. He knows about my back and neck issues, and should know about the cardiac issues from my intake forms, but I think it best that I remind him.

And now, I must leave work early.  First thing place that I have go is to the vet.  I brought my cat there on Friday and it turns out she has a thyroid issue and will need medication.  Fortunately, they said that it's treatable. :D After that, I'm going to my sister's to help her put up a little shelf unit above one of her toilets.  Then, I need to go to rehearsal for "The Head That Wouldn't Die."  We don't open until December 4, so this week I'm there just to see how it's all going.  I'm running the sound board, so I just need to start getting used to all the cues.

Be back later!

The snow has melted.  The weather was crazy today.  On Saturday there were huge piles of snow. And today it was low 60s.  Crazy!

DR Jennifer, about how high were your snow piles and what is typical in your area?

Oh they weren't that high yet since it's only November.  It's only been snowing for one week.  It was just so bizarre seeing snow all over the grass and then having 60 degree temps.

DR TCB has your friend taken any cruises that leave from LA or san diego?  He can drive to those ports.

But the problem is that he still has to fly home.  And, of course, you can't get very many longer return flights than Australia to Arizona.

DR Kevin, fortunately we have you to keep us updated on how DR Kate is doing and to let her know we are thinking of her and miss her.

Unfortunately, we don't have the same luxury with Danise and Dakota who just left us, with no conclusion to their lives.

Good morning, all!

The bad news about my new neighbor? She has a dog.

Let's hope that Larry's ghosts scare the dog and keep him quiet. No harm, mind you, just quiet.

I can only hope. The dog barked yesterday afternoon and a bit this afternoon.

Got a really nice e-mail from Michael Kerker of ASCAP - he really liked the Sandy CD and was very complimentary about the songs.

That's great. And well deserved.

Yes, I'll do my review within the next 10 days. Honest.

The good thing is that all this dancing has caused me to lose some of my gut. I've lost three inches around my waist and clothes are starting to get really loose on me. On Saturday, I tried on a medium-sized shirt that was supposed to be a snug fit. It wasn't.

Anyway, I'm not a scale watcher, but I had to be weighed at the doctor's office. According to his scale, I've lost all of four pounds. ?????

I'll take the three inches over the four-pounds any day.

The waiter was funny.  While not a big deal I can see why your sister might expect your niece to know better, unless they don't take her out very often
