Title: THE DAY OF THE TURKEY AND GIVING THANKS
Post by: bk on November 26, 2014, 11:59:48 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave thanks and were a turkey, and now it is time for you to post until the thankful cows come home - thankful it's the turkeys that are eaten rather than the cows.

Yesterday, John G. asked, "Have they found your co-worker, George?"

I hadn't heard anything by the time I left yesterday afternoon.  I can only hope that he's okay.  I won't find out anything until Monday...if I find out anything at all.

Happy birthday to divarobbie.

We got to meet him a few months ago when we saw a show he directed at 54 Below, and he did a really fine job with the staging, and I assume he had a lot to do with the very smart patter and order of the material as well.

And my special gift to you is

The complete television recording from May 6, 1952 of the London Cast of SOUTH PACIFIC with Sean Connery, Larry Hagman, Ray Walston, Muriel Smith (Whose voice was used in the film), Wilber Evans and Larry Hagman's mother as Nellie.

It was filmed on 16mm in the Drury Lane theater without an audience. Which was a little weird at first I was expecting entrance applause for its stars but there was silence and then I realized no audience.

It's not a great transfer but it's a chance to see how one of the great musicals was stage with the stage craft of the day and the compete performance of one musical's great performers.

Now I don't know how long this might be up on you tube so get to it as soon as you can.

It is 2hrs and 40 minutes with reels changes and filmed intro of posters and cast lists.

Good morning, all! And Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm watching the Macy's parade and pondering my day  I will spend part of the day with Josh and Jeremy Clayton and others I may or may not know at John Bell's home. John is the assistant conductor for ON THE TOWN, and I am quite fond of him.  I am waiting for Joshie to tell me what I can bring.

I got a loverly email from Ireland this morning from Eamonn, our Barry on EILEEN and Ladislaw on ROBERTA:
I eventually got round to listening to Roberta uninterupted from start to finish. What a great recording it is! So slick, spritely and clean cut fun! There are many beautiful moments. Among my favourites are Vinny Lynch's electric playing, Kim's crazy characterisation and the brilliant brass boys. Absoutely fabulous - well done you for pulling all the forces together and getting it out there.

The limited talent of Rob Ashford strikes again! I just saw the Macy's Parade bit of PETER PAN. The Lost boys are played by men?  And that's the new dance arrangement and choreography for "I Won't Grow Up"?   Lost Boys, it's too late; those balls have dropped.

I'll stick with Mary Martin.

DR CHAS SMITH - I use a FIREFOX add-on with my browser that puts a download option on my YOU TUBE page....

If you use Firefox it is very easy to use.  Then you can always use Format Factory to convert them to AVI's to burn to a dvd.

Well, I recorded NBC's Macy's Thanksgiving Parade coverage, and now want to record CBS's coverage, but the darned football game aftercrap (technical term) is on and I don't know if the parade will be joined in progress or if CBS will start it from the beginning since it's all tape-delayed for the left coast.  I set my DVR to record an extra hour longer, but it's getting filled up.

One interesting e-mail this morning, which would seem to finally put an end to some nonsense that's been going on since the end of April.  This is the first time that anyone involved in this thing has finally admitted wrongdoing on their part, so that was good.  They did stop short of the full admission but they know they have been in the wrong since day one.  They're never going to admit anything else and they're trying to actually close the matter for good now in order to avoid us doing anything else - we're discussing it, but my thinking is the matter will be closed.

Jeanne!  Sorry about the typing (I blame Vixmom)  That was supposed to read DHA.

Oh, fish oils! I'm a fan of fish oils, which contain both DHA and EPA. Two of my trusted sources--Sherry Rogers, MD and Ed Callaway, R. Ph--heartily advocate fish oils for pain management. In, fact fish oils are good for you in many ways. My favorite one, which I've been using for many years, is Life Extension's Super Omega-3. The capsules are large, but go down easily and don't have any aftertaste. I see that Life Extension also has a vegan DHA, but personally I don't object to some animal sources.

Being open Thanksgiving Day isn't about Thanksgiving, is it? I don't object to a few food stores being open--that's actually a help. This new trend is about Christmas shopping. We can already shop online anytime. Has in-store Christmas shopping become an obsession? Personally, I'd like to see the whole Christmas thing dramatically reduced. And I don't think that need interfere at all with religious observances or seasonal musical events. Rant over.

And I am home! The dinner was lovely, it's always good to see my Clayton sons Joshie and Jeremy, and John Bell is such a wonderful person and host. He's conducting ON THE TOWN again tomorrow night, and I wish I could be there to cheer him on.  His cousin and her husband were in from Pittsburgh to see ON THE TOWN and the parade.

I shall now be on my way to a Thanksgiving dinner.  I remember a time when Thanksgiving dinners began at four - you know, food at four.  Not now.  No food till five-thirty - doesn't seem very Thanksgiving like to me.

Bruce, did you know that "Woman of the Year" is out of print?  I wanted to gift a copy at Christmas, but not at scalper prices.  What a wonderful project it might be for Kritzerland!!

Our 2014 Thanksgiving is history as is Mother's 96th birthday.  She actually came for the feast, but didn't eat much except for pumpkin pie.  My niece and nephew did all the transporting and assisting Gram into and out of our house.  I am forever grateful for that.

Nice dinner this afternoon. Standing rib roast, brussels sprouts, handmade sourdough bread, olive and orange salad, and, oh yeah, some turkey, cranberry sauce and sweet potatoes.

I made a pear and cranberry crostada for dessert. There was also something wonderful from Ben and Jerry's called Half Baked with choolate and vanilla ice creams mixed with cookie dough and brownies.

We had turkey, ham, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes with dried plums, green beans, roasted beets, cranberry sauce (jellied and whole berry), rolls & butter, pumpkin pie, and apple pie.  Our new fridge is full of fabulous leftovers.

I did most of the prep at home and then transported everything to my Mom's where the cooking commenced

I need to figure out how to take the pictures off my IPAD as i was very proud at hpow picture perfect my turkey came out this time

We had turkey, with in bird cooked stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, baked sweet potatoes, corn, mashed turnips, peas with pearl onions and mushrooms, cauliflower casserole (my absolute favorite and Mom's contribution to the dinner), cranberry sauce and fresh baked rolls.

Mom supplied dessert an apple pie served with vanilla ice cream and pumpkin pie served with whipped cream

Thank you Jennifer.  I took a couple of tylenol and half a Benadryl and felt better.  The benadryl controlled the sneezing, dripping and coughing.  Since I was obsessive about wadhing my hands and only have a head cold I was permitted to hold and play with my grandniece :) :)

Back from a fun Thanksgiving dinner, although at some point after food the conversation turned political and I turned off - literally.  Then dessert was served and things were fun again.  I didn't eat nearly as much as I usually do - some turkey, one tiny helping of stuffing, some sweet potatoes, two rolls and green beans.  For dessert a sliver of lemon cake and more than a sliver of pecan pie with whipped cream.  I do believe I am waiting to hear food reports from our dear readers, right here on this board, you know, rather than on Facebook.  You will see no Thanksgiving posts from the likes of me on Facebook.

I'm home from Thanksgiving dinner with the family:  my parents, my niece, my sister, her boyfriend and my cousin and his wife.  We ate and chatted and played Phase 10 and I lost. :)  We had a good time and then I came home, which is where I am now.

I'm now watching TV.  I recorded both the NBC and the CBS broadcasts of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and I want to make a DVD of just the theater performances.  I know Taylor Swift performed, but I have no interest in her performance. ;)

Sounds like good news, BK.

There was a lot of different kinds of food at the family's gathering.  There was turkey, ham, stuff (regular and vegan), sweet potatoes, scalloped potatoes, corn pudding, rolls, and other stuff too numerous to mention.  For desserts we had my sister's homemade peach cobbler, vegan (tofu) pudding (it actually wasn't too bad), and store-bought apple, pumpkin and blueberry pies.  I had the peach cobbler, pudding and blueberry pie.

Yummy all around!

The one time I made Thanksgiving dinner, which was in the late 1980s in Santa Monica, I made corn pudding from a great recipe.  I still have the recipe and maybe I'll whip it out and make it for the Christmas Eve Do.

Sandy and Bruce Making Beautiful Music Together Again

I’ve been a fan of actor/ author/composer/producer Bruce Kimmel’s for a long time.  To get an album of his songs has been a real treat.  And to have all the songs sung by someone with such a lovely voice as Sandy Bainum is just the icing on the cake.  Her voice is smooth and expressive and she performs the songs as if they were written for her.  Some of my favorites are “It Might Be Fun,” “When You’re Waiting for Love,” “Who Do I Have to Blank to Get Out of this Show?” and “Two Roads,” the latter co-written with Richard M. Sherman.  It’s also a real treat to hear these performed by a great, full-sized orchestra.  It’s an aural delight that I will enjoy listening to for a long time.  Can’t wait for their next album together!
