Thanks for the videos, bk! "Simple Christmas Wish" was a staple of one of my favorite performers, Rochelle Seldin (of my beloved and much-missed Eighty-Eights), and it's always fun to see a different take on it. Not a song that I would've thought would work for a young performer, and I'm still not convinced that it's a great idea in general, but Sami certainly has got talent out the wazoo.

Post by: ChasSmith on December 11, 2014, 05:46:08 AM: Last night I, too, put in BUNNY LAKE IS MISSING, to listen to the commentary by Nick Redman, Julie Kirgo, and Lem Dobbs. It is, not surprisingly, enlightening and entertaining from first word to last, and I was truly blown away by the film this time, even as it ran silently over the conversation.

I can echo everything BK said about it, while adding that in addition to the stunning black and white scope, the composition of each shot is perfection. Each and every shot. In long held shots in which a character might be moving across the screen, or different characters might be coming or going, or even when the camera pans a little bit ... every segment of that shot is a thing of beauty. While your eye is never distracted from what's important, the complexity of each frame is something to marvel over.

In addition to the DAVID AND LISA "type" casting of Keir Dullea, audiences also knew from the likes of Anthony Perkins that that "sensitive looking young man" might be trouble.

Paul Glass had just scored LADY IN A CAGE, so there you have two wildly differing but genius black and white thrillers of the golden age, with two wildly differing but genius scores from the same composer.

I thrilled to these kinds of movies like no others in those days. This is a prized Blu-ray.

I found myself at Peet's at 6:10 a.m. buying coffee and a sandwich for lunch. I don't expect weather will permit me foraging outside of this building at lunchtime.

It is currently raining in sheets in Oakland. It is not yet the lions and tigers and bears volume we're expecting later in the morning (at around 8 a.m., for instance).

Some areas of the Bay Area may acquire up to 10 inches of rain during the day. I'm expecting disastrous reports on the evening news regarding flooding and mudslides.

So far, I'm as snug as a bug in some balding guy's rug...but high winds could down power lines and we could find ourselves on backup power later in the day.

The rest of the country has snow days - well, not ALL the country - but what does California get? A RAIN day. The policy used to be that if there were no lights, school is closed. But Nooooooooo, precautions have to be taken because evidently, that's how we roll here in the big CA.

I'm moving to a stronger state.

Many children walk to school or ride buses to school. They expect flooded highways and dangerous traffic conditions. This is not a simple rainstorm in the eyes of the school districts. They are not prepared for the emergency measures that might be needed to keep the children in the schools if conditions become too dangerous to bus them to their homes.

While torrential rains (depositing up to an inch of rain per hour) and high winds (gusts up to 60 mph) are not the same as a blizzard, the lessons learned nationally last year when Georgia had a blizzard it could not cope with gave local officials pause as to being safe rather than sorry.

I've been waffling back and forth about whatever the new book is - I had the idea I wanted to do, then was thinking I'd do something different, but really just wanted to do what I'd originally thought of. I just needed a way into it and it came to me this morning, so up I got and wrote the first two paragraphs of how I want to begin. So, now I know that's definite I'll continue making notes and sketching out the first couple of chapters.

We lost power at work for a bit (while I was away during my late lunch), but only in certain areas of the building, and it just came back about 20 minutes ago.

Hopefully, it won't be that bad...Theater Artists Olympia has a show to do! I'm planning on leaving work in about an hour to get downtown, so I probably won't hear about any power outage downtown until I get there. :-\

Thank you, DRs Jane and Jeanne. More than once today I said to Mom, "Everything's a trade-off." She will lose some autonomy, but will gain a lot of assistance. And she will have her friends nearby. We saw 2 of them today who were pleased to learn of her impending move.

Well, there was no power outage and no problems. It was pretty windy, though. We filled a little more than half the house, but they were pretty responsive and really enjoyed it. I'm home now.
