It's kooky enough to have to get up at six to announce, when one hasn't fallen asleep until two.  It's worse when you get up at four and can't fall back asleep.

Good morning, all! I am on my way out the door.  I've got a trek to the post office, followed by a trip to Toyland.

DR Singdaw, the photos yesterday were great! You do not always credit your source, so I really have no idea what you've dragged from some place on the inner net and what actually has appeared to your wandering eyes.  I am assuming the "home" you claim is yours is really so, since I dread to think you are actually living in a refrigerator carton in Minnesota in this weather.

There are three highlights from 2014 that I can remember: seeing Richard, Ginny, and our former DR Joey in April, the help I got from Drs ChasSmith, Ben, and Anthony with my move from Toyland, the release of ROBERTA in October, and the Kritzerland shows last month. So much of this year has been too difficult and unhappy, from the deaths of several friends to no work and poor income. The real highlight of 2014 was the wonderful circle of friends I have online and off.

So, I will post from Toyland.

Monday morning greetings!  Today is countertop installation day, so our kitchen is all torn up and will get worse before it gets better.  The surfaces are empty, the drawers are out, and the top shelves of all the cupboards are clear.  Stuff is strewn all over the dining room.

How about some "before" pictures?

This is what I call the "peninsula" - it separates the kitchen from the breakfast room.

Here are the official blurbs:

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition world premiere Oscar-nominated soundtrack to the hugely popular and beloved film:

BREAKING AWAY

Music Adapted by Patrick Williams
Conducted by Lionel Newman

Breaking Away, a wonderful coming-of-age story, took critics and audiences completely by surprise in 1979 and the film was an instant box-office and critical success.  Steve Tesich’s warm, wise and wonderful screenplay touched a nerve in audiences and Peter Yates, the director, did a masterful job telling its quintessentially American story.   The cast was filled with up-and-coming young actors like Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern and Jackie Earle Haley, as well as seasoned actors like Barbara Barrie and Paul Dooley.

Director Yates temp-tracked Breaking Away with classical music while he and his editor were working on the film.  Then he brought composer Patrick Williams on board.  Williams saw the film with the temp track and told Yates that if that was what he wanted that it was okay with him and Williams would just adapt that music.  But Yates, instead, told him to do his thing and perhaps adapt some of the classical bits but also write an original score around them.  And that is what Williams did, creating some wonderful dramatic cues in the process.  After the film previewed, Yates ultimately made the decision to go with almost all of his temp track, save for a small amount of the original Williams music.  And so, Williams and conductor Lionel Newman convened for a second recording session to record more of his adaptations, and that was that.  In the end the score was comprised mostly of music by Gioacchino Rossini, Felix Mendelssohn and Friedrich von Flowtow.  After the heartbreak of having to replace his original dramatic cues, the irony was, of course, that Williams received an Oscar nomination for Best Music – Original Score and Its Adaptation or Best Adaptation Score.

For this world premiere CD release, we give you all of the classical pieces that Williams adapted (and adapted superbly), as well as his original score cues, both used and unused.  For listening purposes, we’ve taken the liberty of inserting a handful of Williams’ unused cues into the score presentation, because they work so beautifully there.  The rest are included in the bonus section.

Breaking Away is limited to 1000 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping.   CDs will ship by the second week of February.  However, on average we usually ship two to four weeks ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

and

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition musical theater-related release:

CLASSICAL BROADWAY

Music by Cy Coleman, John Kander, Harvey Schmidt and Charles Strouse

Classical Broadway is a wonderful and fascinating journey into concert hall works by four of Broadway’s most tuneful composers.   For Cy Coleman, we have New York Sketches, three delightful Gershwinesque preludes for piano.  For John Kander we have his beautiful and moving settings of Three Poems by Lucile Adler.   For Harvey Schmidt we have the delectable Monteargentario: Seven Dances for Solo Piano, and for Charles Strouse we have his marvelous String Quartet No. 1 and Sonata for Two Pianos.  While not theater music, these selections are suffused with each of their musical sensibilities and melodic invention.  The album is a must for any fan of these four amazing Broadway composers.

Classical Broadway was originally released on Bay Cities in 1992 and has been out of print for over twenty years now.  At the time of the recording, all these pieces were world premiere recordings and they remain the only commercial recordings of these pieces.  For this long overdue reissue we have done a new and fresh mastering.

Featuring soprano Carol Vaness, pianists Seth Rudetsky, Scot Woolley, Emily Witt, Warren Jones and Harvey Schmidt, and the Korngold Quartet.  Produced by Bruce Kimmel, with liner notes by award-winning journalist Jon Burlingame.

Classical Broadway is limited to 1000 copies only and priced at $19.98, plus shipping.   CDs will ship by the second week of February.  However, on average we usually ship two to four weeks ahead of the official ship date.  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Ok, I went with the friend who will host the NYE party and another friend to see Wild.   I liked it, but liked the book much better, they both liked the movie better than the book.

Interesting, especially since I expect this to be one of the rare occasions when I prefer the movie to the book.

I am most curious to see what the plaza area of Ashland looks like.  I read that between scouting Ashland to film and the actual filming of the town scenes our "beautification" project was completed.  I can't express how dreary the "beautified" area looks.  Before filming the scenes they had to brighten up the area to make it look more like it originally did.

I am home from Toyland to warn you all: when you think you've hit the bottom, you can still go lower.

I got to Toyland to find that the internet was out. So, i called the server and a customer service technician tried various things before advising me it could be the Linksys router and perhaps we needed to buy a new one.  Well, even if i went out and bought one, I have no idea what to do with it.

Since the foundation appears dead and I expect the office to be closed when the lease expires in July, there's clearly no point in purchasing one and trying to get repayment from the foundation , so what the hell?

I accomplished nothing there today, another exercise in frustration.

Not really interesting because it's not really a good opening week holiday gross.  We'll see how it holds, but I doubt it will, but they have a VERY long way to ever seeing a dime back, as this won't do well overseas, I don't think.  But The Hobbit is the surprise - even though that seems like a high gross, it really isn't.  And Night at The Museum sequel beat Annie.

2014 was the year I finished the BBQ book, my master's degree and Mom's cookbook. I also lost three inches off my waist and got back into ballroom dancing with a vengeance. Still, I focus on what I didn't finish and that list is long.

Karen Prunzik, the original Anytime Annie from 42nd Street and who was briefly married to its producer Mr. Merrick, is a Facebook friend.  She teaches dance and tap to kids and puts on lots of shows.  She posted her kids doing Be A Santa from a few years ago - done to my version of the song from A Broadway Christmas, where it was sung by Michelle Nicastro and Guy Haines.  It was fun.  But in looking at it on you tube, I saw there were all these other versions of it with both kids and adults.  Curious, I clicked on about eight of them and every single one either used our recording or copied the arrangement exactly including Nikki Harris's tap dancing.  I was mind-boggled needless to say.  Wouldn't it be nice if people either had to pay a royalty to use the chart and arrangement or, at the very least, acknowledge the people who slaved over it.

There's not a lot of Ashland.  She's on the street, in a store, in a restaurant and in a place that has music.  There were some shots of town, but not a lot of them.

Took a break from Judgment at Nurmeburg and am watching a new movie called Inherent Vice from the director of The Master, which I thought was horrid.  This does have its, how shall I say, outré amusing moments here and there, but boy is it weird for weird's sake - I think I know what he's trying to do, but while I'm sure it works for him for the viewer not so much.  And I really cannot stand the leading man and everyone is mumbling up a storm.  There's some fun 1970s decor, but most of the way the film is shot you don't even know what the rooms or places look like.

Went to an amazing one man show tonight. Well, one man and a pianist. It was part cabaret, part theatre-piece, about the winter solstice. He collected songs from pop, Broadway, and classical, then interwove them with poetry about winter and the solstice. It was very theatrical, very funny, and very well done - a delightful evening. He used several songs from Celebration, which I did in college, so it was fun to reconnect with those numbers.

I went shopping and bought a lot of gift cards at Wegmans supermarket.  That turned into an ordeal. I was using a new credit card and I guess that set off fraud alarms.  The credit card company wanted to call my home number and leave a four digit code.  Since I'm not sure how to retrieve messages from my answering machine the alternative was to leave the code with a relative with the same last name.  So the called my brother's house and spoke with my sister-in-law.  She called me and then I called the credit card company.  The supermarket manager tried again. It didn't work.  Had to call again. It finally worked.

It's really not the fault of You Tube - and I don't mind that people do it, but they really ought to credit Lanny and me or at least the album.  I do own all the arrangements from all the albums, but there would be no enforcing this kind of thing after the fact.  People do this all the time.

Finished Inherent Vice - certainly right up there with movies I hate, but I'm sure some will enjoy it.  It's very smart-ass and if you're a fan of the marijuana cigarettes this will be right up your alley since the characters never stop smoking them.  Since I abhor all drugs, you can imagine just how much I hated every frame of this 148-minute whatever it is.  I also cannot stomach the leading man.  It's based on a Thomas Pynchon book - I'm also not a fan of his either - it's filled with "funny" names that no one would ever have - one character lives on Gummo Marx Way - that's the level we're dealing with here.  I'm sure Mr. Pynchon has never really left the year 1970, but some of us hated it then and hate it now even in retrospect.  There's a mystery in it (the lead character is a pot-filled PI) but after thirty minutes, well, there's just no there there.  This director has his FANatics, but even the couple of movies I could tolerate, like Boogie Nights and Magnolia, are not great for me - they have moments.
