Title: THE DAY OF THE DO
Post by: bk on December 24, 2014, 12:02:45 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were much a DO about the DO, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be attending The Day of the MOO.

There is always a Ira Gershwin lyric that fits the moment

Oh, do, do, do
What you've done
Done, done before, baby
Do, do, do
What I do
Do, do adore, baby

But I did get to find out that we won three Eddon Awards from Don Grigware's long list of excellence in theater for 2014.  For Unique Theatrical Event we're included for my production of Li'l Abner and also for the Kritzerland Jerry Herman show, and then in the Best CD category we're included for And the World Goes Round.

My gosh, I don't know how you radiated such energy - I would have found that COMPLETELY exhausting. Animating your face, body, and voice like that has to take its toll!

Indeed.  But if you're going to play Banjo, you'd damn well better radiate some damn energy.  And our own DR Jrand64 did so, in spades.

Now, just get me started on the required character and energy of a little role I like to call Sheridan Whiteside.  Go on, get me started.  Oh my...

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG has always been a favorite film of mine.

With all due respect to George Chakiris, the Supporting Actor Oscar that year should have gone to Montgomery Clift.

Good morning, all!  I slept late, and I will shortly bus to midtown to drop off a Christmas gift./  Then, I will head back uptown, tidy up the apartment, and ponder how much lower things will go before they start moving back up.

The Luke's Lobster giver has been discovered and the gift is greatly appreciated. I still have no idea why Luke's couldn't bother to inform me of the generous friend.

DR JRand64, you are a veritable whirlwind. I would have been a sharper, meaner and certainly more energetic Whiteside, a rol;e I longed to play in my acting days.

Good news about 3 awards,  BK!

Christmas Eve morning greetings!  I've now done my first cooking project in my made-over kitchen - deviled eggs for the sandwich buffet Richard and I have planned for ourselves.  First, he has to pick up our order from Central Pastry and I have a few more gifts to wrap.  We'll go at 5pm to Rob and Mary Linda's church (without them - they're about to leave for Michigan).  After the service, we'll stop and deliver a present to Mom.

She could, DR TCB, but it's quite an ordeal getting her into our house.  She's satisfied, for now, to stay there and have us visit her.  Richard and I will be there this evening, because in my family Christmas Eve was for present-opening and was as much a holiday as the 25th.  We're celebrating Sunday with Rob and Mary Linda and the plan is to take all 5 stockings to her place and do our traditional round-robin opening routine.

Merry Christmas Eve to All!

I have been in South Carolina since December 16th.  The past week has been fraught with nothing out of the ordinary and much of the same routines as those of yesteryear's Christmases.  Another trip to Spartanburg to place flowers on graves, another fabulous lunch at
Wade's Restaurant in Spartanburg, another shopping trek to a mall outside Spartanburg for a Costco run and shopping for clothes for me.  Sigh.

And rain.  Lots of rain.  Plenty of rain.  Rain, rain, rain!  Who am I?  Joan Crawford?  Somerset Maugham?

No.  Just me in South Carolina at Christmas time.

The First Baptist Church of Johnston has FINALLY seen the light on its Christmas Eve candlelight service:  To wit, it will now be at 5 p.m. vice 6 p.m.   So many folks who wanted to attend could not because of conflicting family do's with which the 6 p.m. service conflicted.

Today at 5 p.m, my mom, my Aunt Doris and I will attend the service and then go to my cousin Debra's for our annual Christmas Eve dinner.   Tomorrow, the family will gather at my aunt's and uncle's house (across the street from us) in the afternoon.

I don't fly out until early Monday morning, so there will be much time for reflection on Christmas and everything that gets said or done.

Tonight, my mom and I open presents.  Hopefully, I will "sleep in" tomorrow.  I've been getting up at 6:30-6:50 a.m. every day. Naps are a necessity with all the early rising (early because I'm on vacation).  My mom has a routine, and I dasn't interrupt it more than I already do.

Have successfully been fighting off a head cold, but the jury is out on how many more rounds I can last.  It's always on the fringes, it seems.

I wish each and every one of you a wonderful holiday observance (or observances, dependent upon your beliefs).

Today, I need to wrap a couple of DVDs for my dad...we exchanged names and I got his.  He's easy to shop for.  He loves getting a gift card from Barnes and Noble and anything to do with Tony Bennett.  I recorded the Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga concert from PBS and downloaded Tony Bennett's 85th Birthday Concert and put them both on DVDs for him.  Hopefully, it won't take me too long to get through B&N to get a gift card.

Our family does our gift exchange on Christmas eve, so that's what we'll do this afternoon.

I got to Fred Meyer to see if they sell B&N gift cards and they did!  AND just as I got there, I got a parking spot.  Score!  Waiting in line to pay took a little longer, but only about five minutes, so that wasn't too bad.  Leaving was pretty easy, too.  I'm now at my sister's, waiting for her to finish getting ready to go to our parents' house. ::)

It is a great feeling to catch up with an old friend and still feel the connection you once had.

Picked up the framed thing, did banking, hung the framed thing, began cooking, kept on cooking, cleaned and organized and here it is just two hours before the Do.  IF I make the Wacky Noodles everything gets a bit complex but I guess I'll give it a go and see what happens.  Sauce is simmering away - I made a huge batch.  Again, I never have any idea who or how many will show up.  I'll make six pounds of pasta and hope for the best.  I have two pounds beyond that I could always make if we run out, but last year, when we had more people than we've ever had, we made it fine.

There is snow on the mountains with on and off flakes.  I hope our white Christmas stays in the mountains so we can enjoy it from afar.

Earlier today I picked up the one remaining gift and then delivered it. While I was out I stopped at my favorite food store and picked up few things. I was concerned that it'd be a madhouse, but it wasn't really any busier than the usual lunchtime crowd. In fact, I encountered LESS traffic than usual, except when I drove by the local Whole Foods Market, which WAS a madhouse.

All is ready and no one has arrived, which is VERY unusual and completely annoying, since I'm really hungry.  Hopefully soon.  Of course the daring Annette daughter is having her own Do and so parking is a bit of a thing.

Good evening. We had a nice little service at church. I walked home in the cold (56 F), as I like to do after the Christmas Eve service.

This afternoon I had lunch with a college roommate whom I haven't seen in 30 years.

It was so fascinating - we remembered many things from very, very different perspectives.  It was good to see him and reminisce.

I had two roommates in each of my first two years at Western Washington University (I transferred in as a junior), one each for the first two quarters, and none for the third quarters.  I have no idea what any of their names are. :-\

In my last year, I had a roommate who was an actual friend, so I remember him.  We roomed together off-campus for the whole school year.  I haven't seen him since then, though.
