I best get to bed - there seems to be this rather inane and quite sudden windstorm outside - really irritating and I want it to stop.

"I can't seem to forget you, the windstorm stays on my mind" - that should be the tagline for a commercial

Good morning, all!  I am meeting mt director friend DJ at 10:00 to see INTO THE WOODS. I don't like the show, so I hope I like the film version.

I have nothing to report beyond that.  When I get home, I will putter about the apartment, watch some TV and God knows what.

Last night, my parents and I went to a service so overstuffed with music that it was close to two hours long. Then we played dominos before heading off to bed. I wasn't sleppy, so I read the last 60 pages of Ethan Mordden's Broadway Babies.

This is a far cry from the usual Ho Ho Hootch party I go to in Texas.

We will have ham for dinner, along with various side dishes and before that, as all good Italians do, they will put out enough appetizer food to feed the Italian army with left overs for the Greek Army just across the water. It's fun but too much food!

I am home from INTO THE WOODS, a show I really dislike.  I still remember from the original production that stupid moment where the dead giant, looking much like a 20-foot bowling ball in a wig, toppled over and I thought, bad finish to a second-rate Sondheim show.  Thanks to the cult, he's believed only to have produced works of monumental genius, but I still think INTO THE WOODS is a second- or third-tier one.  I still have no idea what the hell that idiotic number "The Last Midnight" is all about.  It's a dud, one of the worst things ever penned by the deified Sondheim. so of course i'm going to hell, but "Giants In The Sky." "The steps of the Palace," "Agony," and other numbers in the show are quite wonderful.

That said, I loved the movie, which is a big improvement over the stage show; it's not nearly as noisy, and the second act body count is lower. To me, the two halves still mesh badly, but the cast is really fine, and James Corden, whom I loved in ONE MAN, TWO GUV'NORS, is really wonderful.  I never felt that Chip Zien and Joanna Gleason felt part of the Grimm locale; they were far too urban New York Jew; it was hard to believe he's Rapunzel's brother.  Corden and Emily Blunt seem to be living in the same vicinity as Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, and the others. Speaking of the rest of the cast, I loved the boy who played Jack, Tracey Ulman as his mother, and the Red Riding Hood.  I'm on the fence about Anna Kendrick, but I thought the princes were both great, and came off nicer than they did in the stage show.  It's not a pleasant show; the authors are very mean to their characters in Act Two

"Agony" got a big round of applause from the audience.  I liked the costume and set design very much, and the musical adaptation is quite wonderful.  i think giving Tunick more than 12-15 instruments to write for gave the score a lot of enchantment missing from the stage show, and I was moved at the end.

I still think "The Last Midnight" is complete dreck.

Bruce's Christmas do was so much fun! The spaghetti, tuna pasta salad and wacky noodles were all very yummilicous. I ate waaaaay to much and was trying to digest before having some peanut butter pie when Mark told me it was all gone. Really? I was surprised because I think only about half of it was eaten last year. That's okay - I didn't need it. I was just relieved when Mark told me that Bruce managed to snag the very last slice. Someone brought some really wonderful chocolate mint cookies and I snuck one out and took it home.
There was extra piano-playing and singing this year, and it seemed everyone was playing songs I'd never heard before - true to the Kritzerland theme. It's always good to hear new songs and there was one in particular that Shelly did that I really liked because it had such clever lyrics. Several folks were making requests and both Richard and Shelly said they couldn't possibly remember enough of those songs to perform them, but then they would tell a story about the song and I guess while they were talking, the cob webs would sort of clear and like real troopers they would sit down and start playing and singing would get through about half of some song they hadn't sung in over ten years, and I was just so impressed they could remember half of it. And I was extra impressed they had the nerve to try. It was lovely to hear Adryan Russ sing as I have never heard her before and she sang a song she had written herself that was quite beautiful. Then, the badgering for Sami to sing began and she repeatedly said "no, no, no, I don't want to" and she was still saying "no" while she was standing up and walking over to the piano. She brought down the house with "Annie" which got quite a few laughs as if some folks in the room had never heard it. We're looking forward to hearing the new song at the next Krizterland show. Bruce didn't want to play it for everyone at the party because he said it wasn't ready for "public consumption", and well...you know...he's shy. ;-)

Thanks, elmore, for your review of "Into the Woods". I've always thought it was weird the way Act II turns into such a blood bath. Mark surprised me and took me to a live performance of it a few weeks ago in Beverly Hills. I kept warning him that it all goes down hill after intermission (he didn't remember), and he kept saying we could leave, but of course we stayed, ha! We saw it at the Ahmanson years ago and since they had a decent budget, they did wonderful costuming with Milky the cow, who added a lot of humor to the show. But if you think about it, almost all Sondheim shows have yucky plots - "Sweeny Todd", "Company" (really no plot at all there), "Sunday in the Park with George", for examples. I guess "A Little Night Music" comes close to a decent story. When I saw "Sunday in the Park..." the director of the theater had to come out at intermission and urge everyone not to leave. I figure you just don't see a Sondheim show for the story - you see it for the music and amazing lyrics and just tolerate the rest.

After that, we went home (to mom and dad's house) and were tired so we all went to bed.   This morning we got up, had cinnamon roles and coffee.  Then mom and dad and I had our Christmas and played with the cats.  We had a very nice morning together.   Around noon, I left and came back to Sioux City and they went on to Sam's for the day.   Everyone was fine that I left early as the weather is supposed to turn bad tonight and tomorrow   I had a really nice time and spend some good quality time with mom and dad so that was cool

Speaking of the rest of the cast, I loved the boy who played Jack, Traacey Ulman as his mother, and the Red Riding Hood.

I'm glad you liked it - better than I did, although I completely agree about the cast, which is really excellent - one can pick nits with Anna Kendrick's nasal voice, but I liked her in the part.  And the music does sound great.  As all of you will recall, I said all of the early moviegoers who are Sondheads and Woodsheads and musical theater heads would lead the applause and I've been told that that is indeed happening at the early screenings.  At my industry screening, filled with people who were there to love it, there was absolutely not one clap for any number and very few laughs - a couple of chuckles, and then polite applause at the end.  I just think that regular audiences are not going to like the last third of the film, no matter how much slack they cut the first two thirds.  They're not Into the Woods lovers and the way the film was sold they're probably thinking it's going to be like Maleficent.  I'm sure they will exaggerate the grosses as they did with Nine, but in the end only time will tell.  My friends are split right down the middle - no one really hates it, but half my friends really liked it a lot, and half felt pretty much as I did.

I decided to make a Christmas dinner for myself, so there is a Jennie O Turkey roast in the oven.  I've got potatoes and stove top stuffing mix and will get some veges out of the freezer.    Tomorrow I'm going to pick up some oysters to make my other favorite...scalloped oysters.

Oh, and I'm up.  I had a really rough night.  Perhaps it was the extra POUND of food I ate before going to bed.  I didn't fall asleep till three, was up at five or so, fell back asleep at about seven and was up at ten.  I still feel kind of yucky, but hopefully that will pass.

I didn't get out of bed till eleven-thirty, and then I spent ninety minutes cleaning up - I did all the pots and pans and also the pans and pots, and everything is back as it should be.  I threw a lot of sauce away and I STILL have a huge amount in the refrigerator so that the Darling Daughter can have some when she comes to visit - which isn't going to be today.  She'll be here tomorrow.  I really don't like when her mother does that - guilt trips her into staying for Christmas Day.  The long standing deal has always been mother gets Eve and I get Day, but she's done this three or four times and it always irks me.

I am so happy to be home.  The dinner at Sam's was planned for 1:00 and they were just getting ready to sit down to eat when I called around 3:00 to tell them I was home.  It's not a big deal, but would have put me home long after dark, and I don't like to drive at night.  So, it worked out very well

We are back from a nice and quiet evening with Anthony's aunt and uncle. The video chat did not go well there mainly because we could not get into his uncle's network. His uncle is older and not quite sure about all that "wifi" stuff and he didn't know his password so we couldn't get on to a secure strong network. When we returned here I was able to skype with the family and it went very well. We all saw each other and we didn't have to play pass the phone!

It's been a long day and we have another day of "visitin'" tomorrow so I will soon be in bed

Good night all. Hope your Christmas has been a happy/merry one.

On the subject of cheeseballs, I know they're not new, but have they become popular recently, a resurgence--trendy, in fact? I keep seeing them in the media and that was not previously the case. Who is our cheeseball expert? Would that be cookbook author and foodie, DR JohnG?

I tried not to overeat and I really didn't, save for the third helping of specially-made-for-me kugel, which was GREAT.  Otherwise, a little ham, a little turkey, a little salad, a little cranberry, a little string bean and spinach casserole.  No bread, no stuffing, so that was good.  For dessert, one chocolate chip cookie, a small slice of a chocolate chip cake thing, and a tiny bit of Barbara's trifle.  I just had a grand time.
