I've downed the champagne.

BK, when you save the champagne until next year, have you kept the same bottle for several years, or do you open a new bottle every year and dump the bottle from the previous year?
Title: Re: WELCOME 2015!
Post by: bk on January 01, 2015, 12:21:33 AM
I keep the bottle in the refrigerator for the whole year.  Then on New Year's Eve, I remove it and throw it out and open the new bottle, from which I have one little swig in a glass.  Then that goes in the refrigerator for all of 2015.

2014 was an interesting year here.  We had less page views than the previous two years but were well ahead of 2011.  Everything else was slightly down from 2013, so I think we should make 2015 a banner year.  Back in 2010 we had the best year we've ever had - amazing stats straight down the line.

Re: THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE

Back when Maggie Smith won the Oscar for this film, there was a story circulating that the movie's producer, Robert Fryer, financed an independent advertising/publicity campaign in the trades to win an Academy nomination for Maggie.

When she got the nomination, the people at Fox were furious.  The studio head (Richard Zanuck?) called Fryer into his office and berated him for costing Barbra Streisand an Oscar nomination for HELLO, DOLLY!

I am feeling very mellow at the moment, a bit melancholy, and listening to songs from the 60s and 70s.

Rick Snelling was a very good friend from my hometown who died from AIDS in the late 1980s. His brother and sister-in-law were good friends of my parents and I had gone to school with his brother Jack. He was one of the most outrageous gay men I've ever known, and he was a wonderful friend frm 1970 or so util I moved to Manattan in 1979.  Shortly after that, he relocated to San Francisco with someone he met, and I learned about his death from my mother.

He was traveling with me in one of my dreams last night, and I've spent the morning wondering what brought him into my subconscious and why that now has me mourning and missing dead friends.

Good morning and a very Happy New Year to all!

Pork ribs (country style so no bones) and Sauerkraut are in the slow cooker for my family traditional first meal of the year.  I'll make mashed potatoes and bread rolls as well.

I did modify the recipe somewhat--I cut and added a green apple, an onion, some brown sugar and a quarter cup of beer to the Sauerkraut.

Do you know how hard it is to find a single can of beer to buy?  I have to pour the rest of it down the drain since I won't drink it.  I don't mind cooking with wine and other spirits but I can't stand the taste by itself.  Yuck.

Anyway, we will give it a try and see what we get.

What is everyone else having for their First meal?

Patricia Racette was wonderful last night. She sang four Arlen songs, two Rodgers and Hart, two Sondheim, a Gershwin and some stuff associated with Edith Piaf. She's in town to sing the lead role in Strauss' Salome. Wish I could go, but I'll be out of town for both performances.

The symphony followed her with about two hours of A Night in Old Vienna with plenty of the other Strauss to keep folks happy.

The highlight of the evening, however, was seeing the fireworks go off from behind the Tower of the Americas, our version of the Space Needle. I had never seen it live before, and it was thrilling. About 15 minutes of non-stop action.

I wish I could have taken photos, but I wasn't in a good spot for that.

The Vixfamily has just returned from IHOP where Vixdad and I had Eggs Bendict  and the Vixter has the sirloin tips meal

It was quite filling, traditionally we spend New Years   Day playing games and noshing on  shrimp with cocktail sauce,  cheese & crackers, grapes, pepperoni, salsa & tortilla chips and the like

generally we have no big dinner on  News Year's Day....

Cool. I wonder why the album wasn't for sale last night. Maybe people didn't want to stuff it in all those mink coats I helped check in. I got to see almost all of the concert, except for her first number because they had me in coat check. But I did get to hear it.

The rule book says that you then have to perform your own Dance of the 7 Veils instead.

But only for select, invited audiences. :)

Yay for all the HHW listees.  And HHW, Kritzerland and their relatives were especially well-represented in his "Notable Studio or Concert Cast Albums" category:

Notable Studio or Concert Cast Albums:
And The World Goes Round (Kritzerland), Herringbone (Yellow Sound), Meet John Doe (Broadway Records), One Touch Of Venus (JAY), Roberta (New World)

I'm sorry I missed the Herringbone selection. My copy still hasn't arrived.

DR Jeanne I don't remember Aiken Ave by name though I'm sure I road my bike on it at some point in my childhood :)

I did find this charming cottage style home that recently sold for $1,300,000.  Might it have been your uncle's?

My childhood home truly needs new landscaping.  It is basically the same without having been kept up well, and the front landscaping was never all that pretty to begin with.

Thank you all for the welcome back greetings!

I have to confess that I don't care much for Sauerkraut but I do this more in memory and respect to my upbringing.

Kinda like Good Friday.  You know that normally I won't touch fish but I do on that one day because my Mom asked me to.

I would add some caraway seed as well while it cooks and then mix in a generous spoonful of sour cream before I ate it

Delicious

Danise  neither the Vixter nor Vixdad will touch sauerkraut or anything tta has touched sauerkraut  but I think yoiur meal  sounds delicious

I'm hankering for some of that myself. I'm making cole slaw, and Bonnie is whipping up colcannon with bangers. Close, but not quite the same.

I should put on my glasses. I read that as "badgers."

Don't be silly,  badgers are the traditional second meal of the new year

Re: THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE

Back when Maggie Smith won the Oscar for this film, there was a story circulating that the movie's producer, Robert Fryer, financed an independent advertising/publicity campaign in the trades to win an Academy nomination for Maggie.

When she got the nomination, the people at Fox were furious.  The studio head (Richard Zanuck?) called Fryer into his office and berated him for costing Barbra Streisand an Oscar nomination for HELLO, DOLLY!

Somehow I think Maggie would have won anyway.

I've been a busy little beaver.  I began the new book, which should have been easier that it was but wasn't due to my senility.  As I mentioned, I'd written a rough up of the first two paragraphs.  But I'd done that twice, actually - once about three months ago, and then I redid it about three weeks ago.  Unfortunately I left the original pass of it and I mistakenly began with that and couldn't understand why I was having to fix almost every word of it.  When I finally got to what was paragraph three on the notes page, I realized THAT was the real paragraph one.  So, I nuked what I'd done, save for one good line, and then started again - this time the first two paragraphs were much easier and it flowed from there, albeit slowly.  But I kept at it and thus far I've written just under ten pages, which is as good a first day's writing in terms of page count as I've ever done, and I'm quite sure I'll do another couple of pages when I get home later because I left off in the middle of a thought.  So far, I'm having a really good time.

I began the day with a potential plumbing disaster. Last night when I went to bed I could hear water running through the pipes in the bathroom wall. I was suspicious, but someone could have just been taking a shower. (It was midnight.) This morning I could still hear it. I took my shower, then called the manager. It turns out that the young couple who are so noisy weren't home, but their toilet kept running on. Not only does this run up the water bill quickly, but as you probably all know California is in a severe drought and wasting water is a real no-no. They'll probably blame me as i was the one who reported it, but it sounded to me like a burst pipe, which is a real emergency. They have not returned home yet.

My little drama to start the year.

Danise  neither the Vixter nor Vixdad will touch sauerkraut or anything tta has touched sauerkraut  but I think yoiur meal  sounds delicious

I'm hankering for some of that myself. I'm making cole slaw, and Bonnie is whipping up colcannon with bangers. Close, but not quite the same.

I should put on my glasses. I read that as "badgers."

I believe fried badger is a traditional Kentucky dish, if not a Texas one as well.

DR Jeanne I don't remember Aiken Ave by name though I'm sure I road my bike on it at some point in my childhood :)

I did find this charming cottage style home that recently sold for $1,300,000.  Might it have been your uncle's?

Yes, actually, it might have been! It looked just like that, but without the picket fence.

Aiken parallels Patricia, one street to the west.

From last night:

Quote from Singdaw:
DR Jeanne - many people don't know that in Rodgers & Hammerstein's first draft of Oklahoma!, the song was called THE BOOTS WITH THE TASSEL ON THE BACK.

Quite true, this is not at all well known. Tassels actually have had a long and checkered history, but as this is a family site we won't go into all of that here. Of course, one is always pleased to see that our HHW DRs have such extensive knowledge of musical theatre history. Thanks for the reminder.

Funny that it might really have been your uncle's house.  I do like it very much.

We've been watching episodes of Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon.

It's not great TV, but it's entertaining, and it's fun to see the world of NY classical music portrayed. You kind of have to suspend your disbelief, as you do also for bk's favorite movie, Grand Piano.

And Bernadette Peters is always a plus.

Thereby crowning both of my home states in culinary glory. Don't forget the creamed coon gravy to go on the side.

I went to see Into the Woods and really loved it.  Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick and Meryl Streep were all fantastic.  I had never seen the show but knew several of the songs so that made it more enjoyable too.

My sister and I saw it today, too.  I loved it, too.  I did miss (a bit) what was cut, especially the "Agony" reprise, but what was there was very good. :)

Since Billy Magnussen and Rapunzel rode off into the sunset, how could there be an "Agony" reprise?

True...my sister actually noticed that before I did.
