Today will be a long day.  Theater Artists Olympia is having an executive board retreat.  I don't know what all we're going to do from 11:0 am until 5:00 pm, but we'll be doing somethings.  It's also supposed to be a potluck, so I need to get something to bring.

Good morning, all! I'm working at home this morning, then meeting my friend Paul Ford for lunch at the Westway on 9th and 44th. I've got three numbers to finish for Act One of Gentlemen Be Seated! and I'd like to finish one of them before I head out.

DRs Cillaliz and JRand64, I appreciate your thought on the Mekeel situation. I do realize that he needed serious help and the friendship we had thirty years ago was a completely different one than it would be now.

My book for SHE LOVES ME finally arrived, and, as I had guessed, it's a veritable quagmire of synth string patches of various stripes, some to be played "when there are less than 3 strings in the orchestra".  And we have one (count 'em) violin, last I heard.  Unless the bass player is included in that count (I certainly don't think so), and I don't know if he's playing stand-up or electric.  The small sound of the Broadway revival lives on!

It was an awful orchestration, and the moronic changes to the original score were worse.

Sunday!

Well.....BIRDMAN is a movie that is very different.  It is entertaining and I enjoyed it very much, but I need to see it again.  I very much enjoyed all of the backstage wandering around the St. James Theater where it was shot.

BOYHOOD kept getting better and better as it went along.  I ended up liking it a lot, too.  This has been a good year for movies......

DR CILLA LIZ - the defense team for Jodi A. has been outrageous in its behavior during the mitigation phase of the sentencing trial.  They are basically retrying the case in front of the new jury.  Shouldn't the judge stop their antics?  If it doesn't go to mitigation, should it be allowed.

Their witnesses are defiant of the judge and the prosecutor.  Now they are asking for a mistrial because they say they have 13 witnesses who are too afraid to testify.  Arias herself gave SECRET testimony for a day and half - no press no public no cameras - the Arizona Supreme Court finally ruled on Friday that that was not legal and that those transcripts must be released.  No word on whether she will continue to testify, but if she doesn't, that testimony will be stricken, I assume.

Defense team has also charged prosecutor misconduct saying that they erased evidence from the victim's computer while it was in the property room of the local police department.....they have a couple of wacky computer scientists who are trying to prove that.  They want all charges dropped - even though she has been convicted on murder one with premeditation and heinous actions.

It's a mess....and her defense has cost DR LAURA more the $2.5 million dollars so far.

Sunday morning greetings!  A non-Lima Sunday for us, which is a good thing because there's some nasty winter weather predicted for this afternoon/evening.  So far this morning I've undecked the front porch railing and the mantle in the family room.  Next up, taking the ornaments off the family room Christmas tree!

I haven't seen Atlas Shrugged Part 3 yet, but I will probably get it on Blu Ray.....

I was very disappointed that they moved the time frame up to NOW.....but I understand the budget reasons for it.....and then of course as MR BK mentioned, there are the cast changes.

And a key event was Dagny trading her diamond bracelet for a bracelet made of Reardon steel, and for some reason in the movie, it was a necklace that she traded.....no real reason for the change.  Maybe they had a necklace in the prop room.

Do convicted criminals who are sentenced have to pay for their own appeals, or do they still qualify for public assistance?

Do convicted criminals who are sentenced have to pay for their own appeals, or do they still qualify for public assistance?

what I want to know is : How are jurors supposed to pay their mortgages and their other bills?  How are they supposed to keep their jobs?  I understand the reason for a jury system and being judged "by a jury of your peers"  but  (at least  here in NY)  the daily pay is maybe 20% of a normal daily salary   AND  you don't  get any of it until about four weeks after the jury duty is completed... if you are living paycheck to paycheck  what happens?

The defense attorneys are doing their jobs: get the least penalty possible. I can't blame them for that.

Also, one of the first questions they ask jurors is if it would be a financial hardship to serve on a jury. They don't want anyone to suffer financially because of jury duty.

I've known Paul since he played piano for a concert production of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS at Town Hall around 1983.  He was the roommate of Bill Tynes, who produced the New Amsterdam Theatre Co.  He played piano for rehearsals and show for every Sondheim musical after SWEENEY TODD, I believe, and he worked with Paul Gemignani for years on concerts and other shows.  When I worked at Drama Book Shop in the 1980s, I used to see him coming to play INTO THE WOODS or SUNDAY IN THE PARK or PASSION as I was heading home.  He's a dear friend and as crazy as they come.  Kinda like you, DR TCB!

Evening all!  Sorry to hear that DR Jane isn't feeling well--feel better vibes your way!

I ran around to much yesterday.  And then had to go out again and get the things I forgot to get yesterday.  I try to have a list but sometimes even that doesn't help.

I stayed in bed until ten this morning.  Just lazy and didn't feel like getting up.  I was in that sweet spot--just sooooo comfortable.  Not to hot or cold, not sleeping but not fully awake.  I love it when that happens.

i'm starting my New Year promise to try to eat a (well really drink) more greens.  I bought a vitamix a month or so back but haven't really put it to use.  I am going to attempt to change my lunch for a green drink.  I mixed my first one up tonight.  It has an.....interesting flavor.  I hope I'll be able to get used to it.  Spinach, papaya, grapefruit, lemon, lime, flax seed, pineapple and turmeric.  This is for people with arthritis.  They claim it will really help with joint pain.  I'm going to give it a try.

Paul Ford's no-holds-barred comments on the Forgotten Musicals book of face page always had me in stitches. I knew his name long before he joined that site. That was back in the day when I memorized every person in the chorus of certain shows, ever person listed on the stage credits, etc. No memory for that anymore.

Best of luck with the juicer, DR Danise. Don't stick too many fruits, as that fruit juice is pure sugar and not for a diabetic, which, as I recall, you and I both are.

I love my Vitamix. Use it for soups more than anything. If something has to be pureed down to a smooth consistency, it's great.

Today will be a long day.  Theater Artists Olympia is having an executive board retreat.  I don't know what all we're going to do from 11:0 am until 5:00 pm, but we'll be doing somethings.  It's also supposed to be a potluck, so I need to get something to bring.

I'm home now!  We had a good retreat.  We went through our by-laws and policies and procedures.  Some things were tabled, but we got through a lot.

DR Elmore, he clearly valued your friendship as he entrusted you with the poems he wrote in his journal.  If you want to visit him, I'd suggest writing to him first.   Sometimes you have to put people on your visitation list or they can't visit. Having had lots of contact with people in prison, I can tell you that contact from people they knew and cared about really means a lot to them, but you don't know his frame of mind, so initial contact in a letter is a good idea.  If you need help locating him, pm me, I'm sure I can figure out how to locate him

2.5 million, I should have stayed in Arizona, lol.  Yes, it does sound like they are being outrageous. But, this jury hasn't heard the testimony from the trial and the facts of the case are usually considered as either mitigation or aggravation.  So, at least some of that should be allowed.  They made allegations about things being erased from the beginning.  I don't know how far that will go.

One thing you should understand is that you have to object to everything and try to get evidence in about everything you find objectionable for appeal.  If you don't object to something, you waive the issue on appeal.   Also, for issues like the erasing of the computer, if you don't make an offer of proof or try to get the testimony in whether in front of the jury or outside the juries presence, it won't be in the record on appeal and the appeal court won't have what they need to review the case.

elmore, who is your friend, Paul Ford?  Is this the New York, writer, Paul Ford, or is there another Mr. Ford with whom I should be familiar?

Thank you, my friend!

This poor jury was told the trial would end by December 18 - but now it looks to go past February.

Do convicted criminals who are sentenced have to pay for their own appeals, or do they still qualify for public assistance?

In some states they have to reimburse but at the $20 a week or whatever it is you make in prison, it isn't likely that will happen, and I don't think AZ requires reimbursement.   If we didn't have the death penalty, it would be a lot cheaper.  Fewer appeals, fewer reversals, fewer retrials.

what I want to know is : How are jurors supposed to pay their mortgages and their other bills?  How are they supposed to keep their jobs?  I understand the reason for a jury system and being judged "by a jury of your peers"  but  (at least  here in NY)  the daily pay is maybe 20% of a normal daily salary   AND  you don't  get any of it until about four weeks after the jury duty is completed... if you are living paycheck to paycheck  what happens?

20% of a normal salary!  Wow! I think it's $10 a day here plus mileage

There is a notion DR VIXMOM that the Defense Team, among other shady actions, is prolonging things in order that they will lose enough jurors to cause a mistrial.

That's a possibility

The defense attorneys are doing their jobs: get the least penalty possible. I can't blame them for that.

I just think that the prosecution should have asked for life in prison, then we wouldn't still be going on with all this.

Amen

The library where I work used to have a policy that if we got paid for jury duty, we had to "donate" it back to the library.  I don't know why that started, but several years ago, that was changed.  I don't know how much it is, but it's really a tiny amount compared to what most people make in their jobs.

Finishing up Ethan Mordden's "The Hollywood Musical" while waiting to read the Globe winners. Awful book. Maybe his worst. In his universe, Ron Field directed the original Cabaret. Only one of many irritating items. He's so obsessed with early musicals that he should have written "The Hollywood Musical in the 1930s" instead. Perhaps then he might have found a focus.

Power point done.  When you only have 15-20 minutes to explain something as complex as immigration law, you really have to summarize, lol

I've done almost eight pages - so I think I can get four more done by the end of the evening, and I'll have finished the current chapter and started a new one.

I think Chase may have had some hacking with credit cards.  I got a call tonight about possible fraud on my card. Instead of returning the call to the number they left,  I called the number on the back of my card and the only suspicious activity they had was Overstock.com for a dollar.  There were no other charges that were at all suspicious as I don't use that card too often anymore.   Now, I don't think I did anything on Overstock.com but I'd be really surprised if they always alert someone for a one dollar charge.  They are closing my account and issuing me a new card.

That's who I got the phishing email from earlier this week, someone posing as Chase.

Or I guess it's last week now.

Never click on the link in the e-mail or call back any number listed in a phone message - always do what Cilla did and call the number on the back of the card.

So, Eddy Redmayne won - he was wonderful.  But the Oscar race - much tougher because they don't have the extra categories.  I think the DGA award for director will tell the tale, but the sheer time frame of Boyhood is really working in that director's favor.  Glad for Julieanne Moore - a terrific performance.

I may take a second shower at some point.  I'm also really full - I ate a cup of chili and a sandwich so not that much, but someone brought donuts to the stumble-through and I had two of those.  Oops.

Last I heard you get $30 a day here  but if you don't get paid by your employer (and there is no law requiring that they pay you) that is al you get  so but in New York you are not going to pay your mortgage, your utilities, your grocery bill , your insurance, your car payment, your phone payment on $150 a week   and again  you wont even see that  pittance until 4 weeks after the service is complete\

and yes , you only get paid if you are chosen so you can spend your precious few vacation days sitting in a room waiting to be chosen or not

I am afraid I find jury duty not so much as a patriotic duty as involuntary servitude

Hmmm not sure they can make you take vacation days....

well you can use your vacation days or lose a day's pay

I guess that is another advantage of being a State Employee.  You get jury duty as time off with pay.  And you get to keep your jury pay.

Did end up doing twelve pages.  This batch was surprisingly hard - I'd thought it would be easy, but the tone was touchy and I just moved along really slowly.  I did get ideas in the shower, but they're for later.
