Title: THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO BK
Post by: bk on January 28, 2015, 11:20:09 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were gospel, and now it is time for you to post until the gospel cows come home - they're currently listening to their favorite singer, MOOhalia Jackson.

Yesterday, I went to dinner at Anthony's Hearthfire Grill.  It was pretty good and with the discount, it wasn't too pricy.  I had the Basil Chicken Penne.  I forget what my friend had, though...something with shrimp.  We also shared the bread pudding for dessert.  It was all very good.

We watched FURY with Brad Pitt last night.  Excellent war film, but perhaps the most brutal and bloody one that I have ever seen.

TOD:

Certainly I've seen many movies of Shakespeare's plays, but, on stage, I've only seen 2 different productions of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. One of them, staged in Long Beach, featured Robert Quarry as Petruchio.  This was many years before he became COUNT YORGA, VAMPIRE.

I did SHREW in college.  I was totally miscast as Grumio.

TOD - When I was in high school in Detroit our drama club went to several productions at Wayne State University's Hilberry Classic Theatre.  THE TEMPEST and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM stand out in my memory.  A couple of years ago Richard and I saw THE TAMING OF THE SHREW, wild west style, at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, DC.  Sounds like it shouldn't work, but it did - beautifully.  Then, of course, there was TWELFTH NIGHT at the Belasco in New York in 2013 - sublime!

Good morning, all!  I have to go to City Center and see Joshie, who's got a deadline for tomorrow's sitzprobe fir bext week's Lady Be Good!  When i return home, I'll continue work on PYW.

DR JohnG, I worked on McGlinn's Gershwin Overtures.  By the time of the Kern recording, he had decided that Russell Warner was his orchestrator of choice, and he deliberately avoided me between 1994 and 2000 because he owed me $1000 and I finally sent him a letter saying, if you won't repay me, you can at least throw me some work. And so he put me onto the Packard Humanities Institute project.

He was a piece of work.

I helped Dustin Hoffman on his Merchant of Venice research when he played Shylock for Peter Hall's Company.  He and the cast were great, but I found Hall's production cold and uninvolved.

I had seen a fantastic off-Off-Broadway production of Merchant of Venice set in Fascist Italy.  The production played in a high school auditorium on the East Side. My friend Annette Helde played Portia's trial scene in a fedora and double breasted suit. Stanley Tucci played the friend f Bassanio who elopes with Shylock's daughter.

My friend Barry Lynch was Puck in a Royal Shakespeare Co, production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that was quite wonderful. I haven't seen the filmed version of that production, but I remember the set onstage was door frames of various sizes and heights that rose out of the floor.

TOD

I definitely  have to agree, Ginny , Twelfth Night with mark rylance as Olivia and Stephen fry as her head servant (the characters no space rides me at the moment ) was probably the best live production of Shakespeare I have ever seen,  his Richard III was a close second. The acting was amazing. Despite the fact that all the actors dressed on stage and you clearly saw that it was a all male cast within moments of the play beginning you were totally invested I the characters and saw all the female character s as women. I loved the fact that it was true to the material no motorcycles or modern dress or language. The stage was lit with what seemed hundreds of candles and the set design was merely a table and a couple of benches which the actors moved as needed. I was also lucky enough to have an onstage seat fir both shows

It really was thrilling experience (I saw twelfth night at the matinee and Richard III at the evening performance, same cast same set different show )

Tod continued. Favorite video versions include. The zefferielli ( was I close?) 1968 version of Romeo & Juliet , Kenneth branagh's much ado about nothing, and the David tenant version of hamlet. Mostly because of Patrick Stewarts portrayal of both the uncle king and the dead father king

TOD:

When I was a kid, we would go see the local Shakespeare  in the Park productions largely because they were free and I hounded my parents into taking me. When I got my driver's license, I would sometimes go and see a production five or six times over its two-week run. One of the best was Merry Wives of Windsor. On the final night, the leading lady got sick and the director filled in, holding her script behind a fan. She was fantastic, hardly needed the script, though I'm sure having it there was a comfort, and the rest of the cast rallied to give what will always be my favorite evening of Shakespeare.

As for the movies, I'm partial to the "Twelfth Night" with Helena Bonham Carter. And I loved the televised scenes from "Taming of the Shrew" with Raul Julia and Meryl Streep.

Speaking of space rides when we were at the astronaut hall of fame they had a G force ride that was closed  but while I was standing near it. One of the staff was teaching a new staff member how to run it.  She saw me watching and asked if vixdad and I would like a ride so we said yes. It was greT fun

They also had a simulator ride that they opened for us it was an enclosed ride and vixdad thought it might double as a tunnel of love... When we got out the staff member said dryly we were all watching you.  It turns out there was a hidden camera broadcasting riders reactions to the outside screen

Yesterday we went to the  Village Inn in Titusville for dinner it was recommended to us by an employee at Kennedy space centre

When we got there it was packed apparently Wednesday is free pie day and everyone was there for the free pie

Last night, Anthony's was packed because so many others also had the $20 off coupon.  I was told that it would be about an hour before we could get a table (since I didn't think about making a reservation), so we went into the bar and it wasn't even five minutes before a waiter came and gave us menus.  The coupon expires today, so I can't imagine what it'll be like tonight.

Oy! My neighbor is a jazz pianist and his wife is an artist who's really big into animal rescue.  She regularly posts on Facebook about poor treatment in the shelters, and railing against persons in charge of the protection services se feels are not helping the situation. I admire her involvement but i also regard her behavior as a bit eccentric. So, tonight as I took my recyclables to the basement, I rode down in the elevator with the pianist and I asked how his wife was.  I hadn't seen her about the building, I told him, but I've been reading her rants.  He got off on the first floor and I went to the basement.

when I got back upstairs, my phone rang.  It was his wife asking me to tell him nothing about her Facebook posts; he went back upstairs and gave her hell for her posts! I'm going to start avoiding both of them.

I'm sorry DR elmore, this made me laugh.  Keith has often told me he corrected my fb post.  I have no privacy-lol

Really, if she doesn't want her husband to know what she puts on fb she shouldn't be friends with anyone he knows.

I am perfectly content for Keith to make me sound more intelligent than I am. :)  I also think it is loads of fun when he changes my photos without telling me.

Oh, my!

DR Jane and whoever else watches the Mentalist. Only 4 episodes left! :(

And OMG the preview for next week!??!!!

I will be sorry when the show ends, on the other hand I am loving this season-best ever.

I am loving it too. They got rid of the one annoying woman on their team last year. I do miss Rigsby and Van Pelt though.

True, but now there is more Chow time and I think he is great.  I love his dead pan delivery, a bit like Dragnet, which makes me laugh.

i love him too and the new computer guy.

This morning I woke with a horrible cold. I went to the walgreens and the pharmacist recommended sambucol a homeopathic cold relief made with black elderberry.  Jeanne have you ever heard of this? It is supposed to help with sinus congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat amongst other things so I am giving it arty. I also picked up a zincam.   nasal spray

I use Sambucol all the time. In addition to the homeopathic tablets (very easy to take), there's an herbal elderberry liquid, which is the best-tasting medicine you'll ever find. Sometimes I use the tablets, sometimes the liquid.

I was just reading some of the studies on this the other day. VERY impressive. It's good for viruses in general, thus all colds and flu (strain doesn't matter). My acupuncturist told me that two years ago, when we had such a horrible cold and flu season, she took it regularly all season and never got sick, despite treating sick people all day.

VIRUS-BEGONE-PRONTO VIBES to VIXMOM!

I tell new people at the Playhouse that I fought off the Indians while Linda Gjesvold (another board member who joined in the 70's) laid the cornerstone of the barn.

Good morning - today is basically all my clean up work of two years or so on this musical project.  Considering I have no clue what I'm doing, I think things are coming around nicely.

It's always nice when you don't think you know what you're doing, but things still work out. Anyone have a clever name for this? (Besides a miracle.)

Got a new phone today and it did not get all the old phone numbers carried over. I'm bummed.

That happened to me last May. It's frustrating.  i'm still collecting numbers.

I need to buy a new phone soon. I've been avoiding it.
Title: Re: THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO BK

Back from a fun rehearsal - finished the show and the final two numbers.  I had one image in my head for the do-wop number and it proved to be just right and very clever.  It's Sandy's number with the others singing to her occasionally.  So, I keep her in her chair for the entire number and she gets moved around with a lot of chairography and fun do-wop moves.  It took about ninety minutes to do.  I staged the final number, which doesn't have a lot.  It's written so ambiguously that one could go any way with it.  I chose to completely disregard the stage direction in the script.  One of the group is nervous, making a singing comeback, and there's a small scene backstage with all that gals.  Then the singer starts her little thing, which is to herself, wearing a robe.  In the script she's supposedly at a dressing table or something and the other gals take her robe and put stuff like berets in her hair, revealing her concert wardrobe, a beautiful spangly dress.

To me that's just giving away the ballgame with no magic.  So, I have the gals exit during the singer's inner monologue part of the song, then the singer, by herself, girds her loins and when the music changes to the up-tempo beat, I have her go behind one of our colored panels and when she emerges one second later she's in the dress.  Much more theatrical and fun, I think.

Then I had a cup of soup and some chicken tenders and proofed thirty pages - and realized I mis-numbered the damn chapters - this has happened before and is really irritating.  It jumped from 13 to 15.  Luckily, I have a couple of really long chapters at the end, so I'll reconfigure those and add the missing chapter there.
