We watched LOCKE last night.

The entire movie takes place in a car.

Tom Hardy should have received an Oscar nomination.

This will sound a bit odd, but I have to dig the snow tires out of the garage and have them put on.  It's the first time in about eight years that I haven't done that by mid-December.  We had such a nice break from snow in December and the first three weeks or so of January, that I just let it go.  And then I began to dare to think that I might actually get away with not doing it at all.  Which was an absurd thought, even before these last two storms hit.  But we have had a couple of winters in which that would have been possible.  Not in recent years, though.  Well, at least I saved putting some needless wear on them.

Good morning, all!  I feel better, and the bizarre dreams keep coming: thr only one I remember from earlier in the week involved my friend Diana Montague, a contemporary pera production and God knows what else now.

The dream I remember from last night concerned a benefit in some space like the Arts In Middletown gallery, lot of kids, a bar, a couple of actor friends Ben Davis and Time Winters, and I think the producers may have been my Dublin producers Joe and Jonathan.  Rgw Man from Philadelphia couriered money - not enough - to pay for the event, and when it was over, the Chase Bank branch in the lobby was closed.  My bank card got caught inside the ATM and Ben Davis rescued it. I needed $104 to pay my bar tab.

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream indicates that you are budgeting yourself strictly but that you refuse to limit the things that you consider essential.  You are also very close to finding a new source of income that will come through a friend.....

The Mercury retrograde until February 21 makes this seem unlikely, but the dream is strong enough that it may happen before February 15.

Jeanne, my headache is gone -- for now.

I believe it is my body beginning to reject the daily decongestant I must take in order to fight off the effects of the cedar pollen in the air. It's been killing me in various ways. Instead of the headache, I have a lot of stuffy nose issues right now. Last weekend, it was a sore throat and laryngitis. No actual fever.

Excellent concert last night. The guest pianist Michel Dalberto was riveting on the Ravel Concerto for Left Hand, but his encore was even better: He took Strauss' Four Last Songs and reworked them for piano. He played one of them and it was achingly beautiful.

The performance of La Valse brought the relatively small crowd (about 900) to their feet. Interesting, but as the symphony improves and tries to reach in new directions, the audience is smaller but more appreciative. So, they're playing for the people who want and demand better, but is that enough?

Flop I would like to see: "Anyone Can Whistle"
Flop I've already seen: "It's a Bird, It's a Plane". Actually, I've seen it twice - once as a concert, and once as a production. The production was done in Dallas, TX, and it had been completely rewritten and revamped, and it was much much better than the original.

Yesterday I went to gather whatever I have on PAINT YOUR WAGON (Encores! season is fast approaching), and came up entirely empty.

I do remember tossing an LP in poor shape, but I was shocked, shocked, to find I didn't have a CD.  So I've got the CD on its way to me from Amazon, and a used but good copy of the score from an Amazon seller.

I was also surprised to find there's apparently been no recording since the original cast album, other than the film soundtrack.  No McGlinn.  No Jay or other studio cast.  No nuthin'.  But is that right?  Did I completely miss something?

One of the British labels rereleased the excerpted recorded by the London cast, and John Yap recorded the overture for one of his Broadway compilations.

Today a third party listened to some of the songs I wrote (music) for this musical I'm collaborating on.  I'm happy to say that they said the style fits the time period and things seem cohesive for a score.  That's all I say about that at this time... oh yes... at this time

Sounds intriguing!  Can't wait to hear more news.

Saturday afternoon greetings!  My day improved significantly after:

1) my cell phone alarm didn't go of at 6am as I thought I'd set it to.  Fortunately I only overslept about half an hour.  And,

2) my room key card failed to work when I bame back after having breakfast in the club lounge down the hall.  Had to go to the lobby, 34 floors down, to have it reprogrammed.

Even with all that I was only about 10 minutes late to my 8:30 meeting at which I was introduced as one of 3 candidates for 2 open positions on the Retired Members Roundtable board.  Went to a Book Buzz session for book group ideas, then to lunch with some Foundation Center colleagues.  Couple of demos (with tastings) at the cooking stage and I'm done for the day.  I could have stayed at McCormick Place for a couple of late afternoon sessions, but decided I'd had it for today.

An old man was riding in the car with his other old man friend.  They were talking and driving.

They ran through a stop sign.  Neither man mentioned it.  They continued talking and driving.  They ran through another stop sign.  Before the passenger could say anything, they ran through another stop sign.

"My God, man - you've run three stop signs.  What are you doing?"

The other man said:  "Oh....am I driving?

From DR Vixmom:
Quote
Hmmm it says homeopathic on the label

Afrin was the only nose drops I would ever use as they were the gentlest.  I should have purchased them over Thanksgiving when I used some horrid generic stuff Keith had that really burned.  I also used them longer than they should be used, too many days and nose drops begin to cause problems.

I don't know why Zicam says homeopathic on it.

Back from "Nice Work If You Can Get It" at the Warner Theatre in DC.   I had no intention of seeing it but I got an email yesterday from Goldstar.com offering "comp" tickets (well, I had to pay about $12 in fees).  I had seen the show on Broadway with Kelli O'Hara, Matthew Broderick and Judy Kaye.  I remember not being too impressed, especially by Matthew Broderick, but of course enjoyed the Gershwin score (and the two ladies).   The show hasn't gotten better, but the actors were all fine and it was well worth $12!

Has anyone ever seen the cabaret show "Dames at Sea"?  It will be showing at our local cabraet theater.  Apparently it was the first show when the theater opened in 1986.  They will be opening the current season with this.  I thought it might be fun to go, thing is the chairs are incredibly uncomfortable.

Thank you for the PAINT YER WAGON info, DR Elmore.

This is weird, but as I listened to a few excerpts to whet the appetite, I found myself suddenly transported back to my high school days!

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like those songs ("They Call the Wind Maria", "I Talk to the Trees") were so much more known then -- as, I guess, was the show itself.  I would swear that every choral group was singing this music routinely.  These songs were part of the musical landscape.

Of course it doesn't help that I haven't kept up with the show, myself, over the years.

That sounds good.  With hummus I wouldn't want my usual egg bagel.  You could eat the eggs we buy because the chickens are not killed and have a good life.

I'm reading an article on critisism of Australia's main national newspaper over its obituary of Colleen McCullough.  It really is shocking.  The obit began
"Colleen McCullough, Australia's best-selling author, was a charmer," the obituary began. "Plain of feature, and certainly overweight, she was, nevertheless, a woman of wit and warmth......"

I got a big laugh out of author Neil Gaiman's response
"Although his beard looked like someone had glued it on & his hair would have been unconvincing as a wig, he married a rockstar #MyOzObituary"

The article was interesting as I didn't realize what an accomplished woman she was.

Reading the comments to the story I found this "funny" addition regarding the author of the obit..

"AP, Yahoo, and all of the other sites need to update this article because there is additional information. The author of the obituary cannot apologize, get fired, or anything else as he is DEAD and has been so since a few years before Colleen McCullough passed away. The obit had been written a few years ago as is often done for famous people. It was not edited (or fully edited) before "The Australian" published it inside of the paper with other obituaries."

I stopped at the office and picked up a bunch of work in case I want to do some tomorrow.  I do need to write a brief.  It really has to get done because I don't have any time during the day between now and when it's due.  So, I'll do that tomorrow

I also brought home a lot of little things that would be nice to have done before the week starts.

Cilla, I hope you don't spend all of your Sunday doing work.

I looked out a little while ago and there were 4 deer in my yard. They finished off the food in the bird feeder that the squirrels didn't eat.   I TRY to feed the birds.   Today I had a murder of crows in the yard today right before the snow started.

And there were two raccoons in the street last night.  You'd think I lived in the country instead of in town

Anyway, time for bed.  It will be a nice quiet day tomorrow.  Not into the hoopla of football, but if I have to pick a team it would be the Sea Hawks!

Oh I won't. But I do want to do some things.   I'm a lot more flexible with my schedule and came home early a few times this week, so working on Sunday doesn't bother me at all.  I'll be at home so it doesn't feel like work

I have lots of raccoons, deer, and turkeys (and one lone black bear) in my area; and I live in the third largest city in Washington State.

Today a third party listened to some of the songs I wrote (music) for this musical I'm collaborating on.  I'm happy to say that they said the style fits the time period and things seem cohesive for a score.  That's all I say about that at this time... oh yes... at this time

That's great, Matthew!  Good luck with the project!

DR George the Dampfnudeln sounds good.  Thanks for the links.

Jane, are you thinking about making them?  Let me know if you do.  I don't know anyone else who's had them.

I've never seen it, but I have the recording and really love it.  It's a delightful score and was one of Bernadette Peters' early break-out roles.

The 5th Avenue Theater in Seattle has announced PAINT YOUR WAGON for their June, 2016 slot.  I wonder if they will be doing this new version?

According to the 5th Avenue Theatre website (https://www.5thavenue.org/boxoffice/subscribe), they've commissioned their own script:

Quote
A sweeping saga of the mythic west and the pursuit of the American Dream, Lerner and Loewe’s Paint Your Wagon is filled with some of the greatest songs ever written for the musical stage—“They Call the Wind Maria,” “I’m On My Way,” “I Talk to the Trees,” and “I Was Born Under a Wand’rin Star.” Now, audiences can experience this lusty musical set in the rough and tumble world of the 1849 California Gold Rush as it has never been seen before. The 5th is famous for inventing new musicals—this time we are reinventing a classic.

The 5th Avenue Theatre commissioned celebrated writer Jon Marans to create a new book for the show, and Seattle audiences will be the first in the world to see this new incarnation of this thrilling musical adventure under the direction of 5th Avenue Theatre Executive Producer and Artistic Director David Armstrong.

Although, it doesn't say if they plan on making this version available for other theaters to do, or if this production is going on tour or to Broadway.

In case anyone is wondering, I will be watching the Super Bowl tomorrow.

Actually, so will I.  I'm going to a friend's house for their superbowl party!  Several other friends that I haven't seen in a while will be there, too, so I thought why the heck not?? :D

That's an interesting situation.

Does anyone remember the TV show "227 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088470/reference)" with Marla Gibbs?  I liked that show.  I remembered that show long after it went off the air because when I used to write checks for my bills, my car insurance account number ended in 227 and I would always be reminded of the TV show.  Now, everything is direct deposit, or automatic withdrawal.

My, how times have changed...fortunately, mostly for the better. :)
