Sunday morning greetings!  I crashed early last night because I haven't made the time zone adjustment.  So, of course, I'm up early - drinking coffee and trying to decide what to do today.  I might go to McCormick Place for some morning stuff and come back before the blizzard conditions develop.  Keeping an eye on #alamw15 on Twitter and I'll see what others are saying when I go to the lounge for breakfast after while.

It's an interesting question, Laura.  I think even her "people" won't even know if her time has passed until her next album come sout and they see the sales.

Her last two #1 hits, Roar and Dark Horse, were in the past year and a half.  But the press doesn't seem to have lost interest in her.

By the same token, would Lady Gaga or Adele be considered past their time?

I keep buying COMPANY cd's.....and I keep going back to the OBC. I also love the documentary that was made when they recorded the Cast Album.

I also am underwhelmed by the unnecessary updating of the show......I saw the Raul version where everyone played instruments and it was awful....also saw the NPH version and it was....well I don't know if it was worse, but it was just as bad.

Back, from a brutal two hour and forty-five minute wait for the ten minutes work on my car (putting the snow tires on) to be done.  I guess a few other people procrastinated, too.  But this is a good place, I get excellent work there, and it cost me all of $20 which is less than anyone has charged me for that in the past ten years.

Back in 1977; the second a community theatre production in the mid 80's; the third the filmed version of the NPH company.  None of them were entirely satisfactory but I fell in love with the music in 77 and listened to the obc over and over

Wow! In the There are still great kids out there department. I was sitting here thinking about doing the driveway and walk (truthfully, I don't mind doing it) when three teenagers knocked on my door and said they would shovel my walk and driveway for 5 dollars a piece. Seriously, $5 to shovel isn't very much. That's hard work. I was so impressed that they are out in the cold and the wind helping people and actually working with a smile to make a little money, that I gave them $10 each.(still not much but it only took them about 15 minutes and I let them use my snowblower for the driveway) It isn't perfect, but the wind is still blowing so I'll touch it up later when the wind dies. They were surprised I gave them more than they asked for. They restored my faith in teenagers a little, it was worth it.

Everyone should post their thoughts on Company and the productions they've seen.

I've seen a few regional or community productions that were each good in some respect or other, but I'm sorry to say the only professional one I've seen (live, not counting televised moments of others) is the Roundabout.  And that was SO disappointing, if only for the musical reasons alone.  At the time, I'd been studying and practicing it pretty intently because I was playing a community production -- on piano -- solo -- even including Tick Tock (there might actually exist some audio evidence of that audacious experiment, but I make no promises).  So when I heard that synth-y band start playing, my heart sank.  And yes, I knew going in that it was a new orchestration.

BTW, I think they did include Tick Tock in the production, but they cut it that day!  I forget the reason.

I saw the national company of COMPANY with Julie Wilson, Gary Krawford, and Louisa Flaningam.  it was quite wonderful. The second prduction I saw as at Wright state University n Dayton, OH,around 1977 because an actor with whom I'd worked in dnner theatre was in the cast.  His name was Kip Rookstool, and he moved to New York as soon as he graduated.  When I got to Manhattan, I called him and we planned to meet for coffee, which never happened. About a year later I was on the subway platform reading one of the papers. Kip was visiting his boyfriend when the super sent a couple of killers to get rid of an irksome tenant. They were both murdered. A houseguest escaped to get the police and identify the killers. Such a loss.

I explored the "below lobby" level of the hotel, where I found a snack bar where I bought lunch to bring back to my room.  I also found that there were lots of ALA sessions scheduled in the various meeting rooms, but nothing that interested me.  I sat watching the lake effect snow blow in along the Chicago River and posted a picture of it on Facebook.  Came back up to the club lounge for a cappuccino and sat there and knit for a while.  By the time I got back my room had been cleaned, so I ate my lunch and took a nap.  Watching Super Bowl chit-chat and checking Twitter and Facebook for news from the conference.

Hopefully they will return on the next snow day they aren't in school.

DR Elmore, that's so tragic!

Yep. He had a recording of mine that I' lent him when we were working at LaCommedia.  I think it was THE APPLE TREE, and he said that he'd return it when we got together.  That Wright State production of COMPANY was quite good and i think I went to a cast party after the show with Kip.

I don't think about COMPANY or many productions these days.  We've entered a period of revival stagings and style of performance that's all too natural and psychoanalyzed out of proportion. Say the lines, sing the song and stop trying to "act" so hard that you've pulled the melody, lyrics and performance out of any shape. There's also no sense of humor these days. It's all too serious.

The stumble-through was pretty great save for a few too many lyric flubs all coming from the same two people.  They have to go home and really do their homework now.  But what melodies.  I also changed an arrangement to make it perkier and that really helped, then we're adding a mini-overture that actually happens towards the end of the show where we have one ballad too many - I thought it would be fun for our MD to do a little two-minute thing of all the wonderful Kern songs we didn't do.

That said, I had to overanalyze Company for a class and ended up with a 75-page paper on the show.

I agree with most everything BK wrote except for one thing. I think the audience loves Tick Tock. Michael Bennett certainly choreographed the heck out of it, but since the music wasn't Sondheim's (it was Shire's, if I recall correctly), I can understand why he would want it cut.

I actually like the show without Tick Tock because, without it, the sex between Bobby and April becomes just another scene of empty, meaningless sex. Depressing for the audience, to be sure, but it shows how dreary Bobby's life really is.

I've seen several productions of Company over the years. What has been interesting to me is how the audience reaction to the show has grown and changed over the years. A terrific community theater production back in the late 1970s drew a tepid response from audience. They didn't get laugh. They hadn't seen Oprah, et al. do endless discussions of commitment-phobia. And they blanked on the music. There was little applause at the end of numbers. Everything was polite but uninvolved

The most recent time I saw Company was the NPHarris version at a movie theater with a full house. They laughed uproariously at every line in the script and they blanked on the music, all of it.

I liked the NPH concert version, but then I love having theater productions filmed, so that added to the appeal for me.

The first live production that I saw was done in Seattle by the no-longer-existing Alice B. Theatre who switched some of the couples to be either gay or lesbian couples, and two of Bobby's "girl friends" were played by men.  In the lobby of their theater was an article about a cease-and-desist letter from Sondheim (or maybe it was from his representatives), and that Sondheim actually let them go on with the production because the letter came too close to their opening night.  The article also went on to say that this is what it's about...that Bobby's gay!  But the writer really got it wrong.  I never felt from their production that that was what their production was about.  It really was still about Bobby not being able to commit, whether it was with a man or woman.
