Good morning, all! My friends Bruce Pomahac and Annalene Beechey, her husband Simon, and their children Harry and Rose ran throughout my dreams last night: we were recording Victor Herbert songs, we were meeting for brunch, I was sending Bruce to London with shopping bags of music for her to peruse.

So, I'm out of bed and ready to run to pharmacy and market, and then get back to my Encores! work.

DR Cillaliz, if I'd been awake last night when DR singdaw posted about your immigration work, I'd have added  Big Ditto.  I was sorry to see that you'd had a hellish week over a criminal case.

Seriously, people, did we ever doubt that BK's production would not be a success?  I hope the sales for the run are really good.

Six years ago, on Feb. 14, 2009, John McGlinn's body was discovered when the police broke into his apartment. He had died from a heart attack several days earlier, but the actual time of death is unknown.  Since then, I doubt there's not a day that passes without my mentioning or thinking of John; I cataloged his estate, and until last year I worked in an office surrounded by his scores, books, orchestra parts, and manuscripts.

I've said much ill about him and most likely will continue, and yet I owe much of my career to him. Until the Big Blowout of 2002, when he blamed Robert Kimball and me for his deserved removal from a project, we  were friends. It was a strange friendship, because he had a stunted and extremely limited view of what friendship was. He probably considered me a better friend than I did him because negotiating John's megalomania, treachery, and manipulations were not always fun. For him, a good friend was someone on whose shoulder he could cry about his love life or allow him to talk about himself for hours. Occasionally the conversations were two-sided, like when he'd call and we'd start casting a concert or album together.  Last year's release of ROBERTA was the end of something we'd cast for EMI around 1988 and never happened.

Still, in the 1980s, working on SHOWBOAT, the Danbury Concert, the Book of the Month Club, dealing with diva Kiri Te Kanawa, and sitting in the Carnegie Recital Hall and letting him know when the band was too loud are some of my most cherished memories.  Thank you, John!  I will listen to one of your CDs today and mourn you.

I just had a request from our DR ChasSmith:
If you are by any chance one of those able to connect, please tell them I can no longer get a single page to load on either HHW or Kritzerland.  The sites are effectively hosed.  But maybe it's still only for some and not others.  Cilla's access was fine yesterday evening, as though nothing was amiss.  Anyhoo, let me know if there's anything to know, and I'll try later today.  Thanks, and may your lottery tickets be winners!

I'm here!  But I can only get on through cellular on my phone, not through my Comcast cable connection.  So it's pretty slow going.  But it works.  Looks like I need to suffer a call to the cable company.

Back again, perhaps briefly, but wanted to acknowledge DR Elmore's tribute to McGlinn.  May he rest in peace.  I will listen to something today.

I woke up and felt fine. Then I did a puzzle in the tv guide. It was one of those ones where there is a maze. And for some reason when I was done I was seeing almost double.  Soon after my head started to hurt. But it was very slight so I took 2 Advil.

But soon after my head started to hurt a lot more. I have a prescription for migraines (which i get rarely). But i was not sure how soon i could take the pills after taking the advil.  I ended up taking them 2 hours later. It is a lot better but still not fine.  But for some reason in the dark the computer screen is not bothering me.

I was going to watch Gone Girl on dvd and read. But i think I will have to wait until later. :(

On the up side I won 2 amazon gift cards today. Woohoo!!

I'm sorry, I can't spend the time trying to get the site to work and to posts.  I have tons to do before we take our bedroom apart for the new carpet arriving.  I also have to figure out what to pack in one little carry-on (now that they have shrunk the size) to take for a funeral on Saturday.

I will try again later tonight.

I am finally here via Chrome.  Safari isn't happening right now.  This is outrageous, but part of the problem is our guy is having no problems, just like Cilla and Jennifer.  He's trying to figure it out, but he's also trying to get us moved today rather than Monday.  I don't want him to rush that process because it's always dangerous moving a huge site like this.

If I ever mention to you that I'm going to do gardening, tell me to forget it, mix a drink and do something I'm qualified for.

I was attempting to remove an unwanted volunteer tree when my butt backed into a window. Window broke and a shard cut the back of my leg.

Trip to the ER was fun as they're tearing up the road out front and redirecting traffic a long way around.

I'm okay but embarrassed.

Wink. Love that grapefruit flavor. And Canada Dry went and killed it. A few years ago, I discovered that Mexican Fresca, made with sugar, tastes similar, so the two or three times a year I allow myself a coke, as we called it, it'll be a Mexican Fresca.

I am trying to figure out if the next pill i take should be for my sinuses because i feel some pressure there.  i am not very good at figuring out what to take.

Our symphony has a wonderful music director/conductor, Ryan Haskins who continues to bring great talented guests and innovative things to town.   Before he was here they just played classical music and though it was good, there wasn't much energy to it. Since he came here several years back, it just gets better and better and there are full houses that we never had before.

SIOUX CITY | That Broadway “edge” was clearly on display Saturday night when “Mary Poppins” veteran Ashley Brown joined the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and, frankly, wowed ‘em.

Possessing a voice that could fill cracks in the ceiling, she breezed through a series of musical standards, stopping only to offer a little biographical detail.

Cast in Broadway’s “Beauty and the Beast,” (she was the 15th Belle), Brown said she had a good shot at playing “MP” when the musical was adapted for the stage.

Still, she auditioned several times and, finally, one night, got the good news – she would be the first to play the role on Broadway. Through hundreds of performances, she found a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious take on the character and even sang “Feed the Birds” for Julie Andrews. Her rendition – performed Saturday at the “Broadway Romance” offering – had more passion and a much different orchestration. Possessing many of Andrews’ high notes, Brown had a way of coloring the lower ones that added plenty.

She demonstrated that depth, too, on “It’s Almost Like Being in Love,” and did her own “Phantom” take on “All I Ask of You” with friend Geoff Packard (who’s currently on Broadway in “Matilda”).

Funny and engaging, Brown said she grew up in Florida in a tone-deaf family (“pick an octave, people”) and went to college for musical theater. That she’d become a Disney regular was no surprise. She has the tone in spades and told the crowd she’s going to sing a new Richard Sherman song, “A Kiss Goodnight,” for the 60th anniversary of Disneyland. “So when you leave the theme park all hot and sweaty you’ll hear me.”

Dressed in red (natch), she stuffed the bill with love songs and traditional Broadway tunes. She and Packard got good mileage out of “Tonight” from “West Side Story” and covered so many familiar songs it’s amazing she had anything left for the second act.

A three-piece combo (including a very good Bobby Kunkle on piano) joined the orchestra. The biggest thrill, though, was hearing how great the brass could be on a New York medley that opened the show. To hear trombones get the lead on “New York, New York” was a Valentine all by itself.

While Brown has been singing with orchestras for a while since she left “Mary Poppins,” she’d be great in just about everything Laura Osnes has played in recent years. If “Guys and Dolls” is revived, she should get the Sarah Brown part. Her voice is made for “If I Were a Bell.”

The Sioux City musicians had fun with the overture from “Chicago” and ably supported Brown and Packard.

What Saturday’s event showed the regulars is how ready the Orpheum is for first national company of a Broadway hit. With voices as strong as Brown’s, the place would shine brighter than the building’s chandeliers.

Damn!  The cheapest new copy of that version of BRIGADOON is $39.50.  I don't always trust getting used copies from strangers.

Hey Elmore, the reviewer,  noticed that Feed the Birds had more passion and a much different orchestration than Julie Andrews version.   From him, I'd take that as a compliment, it was beautiful

I think it's the first episode.  I'm watching it now.  I didn't know that George Coe (who was in Sondheim and Firth's Company) was in this episode and billed as one of the Not Ready For Prime Time Players.

Early this afternoon, I went to work for a few hours to make up some time and to get some invoicing done.  This coming week is the cut-off to pay this month's bills.

After that, I ushered at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.  They had a comedy night.  Jubal Flagg was the headliner.  I'd never heard of him.  There were three other comedians before he came on.

For me, they were all really hit and miss...more miss than hit. :-\ And to several other ushers that I spoke with, all miss and no hit.

However, the theater was filled.  Sold out, actually, so people evidently really love them, but I didn't.

I did sell t-shirts after the show (there was no intermission).  The only issue was that we volunteers were told that the evening would be two hours, straight through with no intermission.  However, with the three comedians before the headliner, it turned out that the whole evening was two and a half hours with no intermission!

They could've EASILY added a break after the first three guys went, and before the headliner.  They really should've done that.  Oh, well.  People came and went as they needed.

That's a very nice tribute, Larry.  I have enjoyed many of his recordings over the years.

Saturday morning greetings!  I lost all of yesterday to a stomach bug that hit Rob even harder.  Richard spent the day nursing both of us and shopping for Jello and Gatorade.  Better today but not setting the world on fire...

I was having problems like this last night and got fed up, so I just turned off my computer.  Everything has been fine tonight...so far.

I am not having any problems on HHW. What browser are they using.

Last night, I tried to get to HHW on three different browsers (Firefox, IE and Chrome) and had trouble with every one.

Woohoo!!

Hope that your head feels much better!  And congrats on winning the gift cards!

Great news!  Congrats on your new addition!

Yikes!!

I have always hated Valentine's Day.

I never specifically hated the holiday, but even when I had a boyfriend, it was never an important day for us.  The long distance aspect of our relationship made everything difficult.

Hello all.  Just a quick report of some theatre I saw in the area the last two nights.  Last night I saw the play Maple and Vine  I believe it played off-broadway in the last few years.  I liked the concept quite a bit.  I could relate in a way, I suppose - wanting to live a simpler life in simpler times.  It's a good play.

Tonight I saw Curtains which I now believe is one of my top 3 favorite musicals of all time.  I think it's clever, fun and a real throw back to the "old" musical.  It was great to see it with a full orchestra, also.  When I did it in 2011, we had a small band,  I don't remember much of that time, it was the summer from "hell"  for me.
