Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both nostalgia and bits, and now it is time for you to post until the nostalgic cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: DOGGO!
-
Oh dear - are the Oscars THIS Sunday???
-
Oh dear - are the Oscars THIS Sunday???
Yup...all day.
-
Good morning to all
-
Oh dear - are the Oscars THIS Sunday???
Yup...all day.
And don't forget about NASCAR!!!
-
I still have many movies to watch from TCM 31 Days of Oscar
-
love the trip down memory lane
-
I know I shouldn't complain that is only 40 degrees, as other are getting it worse, but I never realize how ill equipped I am for this cold weather.
-
Belated Condolences to Jrand on the loss of his Aunt
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Really loving revisiting One from Column A.
It is giddy, and reading it always lifts my spirits.
-
DR elmore3003 - I read that ps classics recorded the Texas production of The Golden Apple and is releasing it as a 2-disc set.
I wonder if they used your materials for that production?
-
Good morning, all.
Laid awake half the damned night, thanks to an ill-timed, misbegotten cup of coffee. Or maybe it was an illbegotten and mis-timed one. Yes, I believe that might very well have been the problem.
-
Excellent nostalgia bits, BK. Most excellent.
-
Condolences to Jrand and his family.
-
BK is closing in on the big 80,000 milestone. if there's a number rounder than that, I do not know of one.
-
Sorry to hear the news about Aunt Edith, Jack. Good thoughts to you.
-
Even if you don't like "modern" classical music, this is a pretty bravura performance!

Good morning, all! I have to copy a celesta part this morning for Joshie and then take some things to City Center. I do not relish going outside into the cold. This is also Dubln weekend for me: Joe Corbett, who's on DEAREST ENEMY and EILEEN, is in town, and annalene my leading lady from DEAREST ENEMY and ROBERTA arrives today.

THE HOMESMAN
THE HUMBLING
-
We watched THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY a couple of weeks ago.
It was okay, but with the talent involved it could have been much better. It fell apart in the third act.
-
DR singdaw, since Tommy Krasker is not a friend and I am out of the loop on this, I have no idea what's going on beyond the fact that the recording is being assembled from recordings of four performances. I do not know if they are recording additional things, like the cuts and changes the Texas conductor made, or anything more about it. I voiced my opinion about the musical director's cuts since, given the fact that it was the first performances with orchestra in twenty years and they were talking about a live recording, he couldn't perform the entire score. Yes, the materials are the final version I edited, and God preserve us from some conductors.
For me, the sad thing is that I hoped to record the show with a Broadway cast and Rob Berman conducting. I'm hoping for Moross's daughter's sake that the Texas performances prove me wrong, but I heard a bootleg from the first weekend and thought, well, it's a good college try.
-
It is -1 degrees Fahrenheit right now. That's a minus sign there. A negativo, good buddy. Over and out.

In anticipation of Sunday night's Oscars, I have now seen both BIRDMAN and THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. I watched BOYHOOD and THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL a few weeks ago.
Best Actor is certainly a hard call. Eddie Redmayne was sensational, but THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is not a movie that I would care to see again. I liked BIRDMAN much more and Keaton is also magnificent.
Choosing between BIRDMAN and BOYHOOD as Best Picture is not an easy call either. But, of all the movies I've seen thus far that are in contention, my personal favorite is THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. It won't win, but I really liked it.
Looking forward to seeing AMERICAN SNIPER, WHIPLASH, SELMA and THE IMITATION GAME when they are released onto DVD. Also INTO THE WOODS.

Wow. Didn't know Ligeti did this kind of "modern". But it put a smile on my face, so what the heck.
-
I, sadly, will be at our Sunday tech rehearsal instead of at home watching the Oscars. This will be the first one I've missed in years. I could DVR it, but unless there are a few outrageous moments that are not to be missed, I fear that watching it later probably won't happen. Sorry I won't be here for the HHW par-tay!
-
Friday morning greetings! I ventured out in the cold last night for book group, as did 4 other hearty souls. Today I have to get some errands done before the next snow/ice storm that's predicted for all day tomorrow :P
-
Thanks to all for the thoughts. Viewing and service are tomorrow, so I may not be around these here parts much. I have not yet been contacted about being a pall bearer, so perhaps there are enough younger people to take care of that....there will be a burial not a cremation.
Here is the obituary: http://www.carlislebranson.com/obituaries/Edith-Swinney/#!/Obituary
Here is a photo of all of the "kids".....L to R: Edith, Betty, Alice (my mom), Anna, Bob, Donnie, Wayne, and Martha. Taken in the 1980's at my grandparents' 60th anniversary celebration.

I am also enjoying the Column A history lesson! Most entertaining.
-
DR JRand, thanks for sharing the photo and article with us. I hope your family finds comfort in fond memories tomorrow.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Started the day off with a trip to Manuel's, a breakfast and lunch place in Port Isabel that we love so much that we'll likely visit it two more times while we're down here.
I had machacado, which is dried beef mixed up with egg and jalapeno. Yummmmm.
-
JRand, sorry about your aunt. My deepest sympathies.

But you can partake in our all-day parlor game on Sunday!
-
And I am home from City Center, the post office, and the bank. It's far too cold to be out running errands.

DR JRand64, I send my condolences to you and your family.
-
Friday, everyone. Friday.
-
Was out ill yesterday. Had sore throat, draining sinuses and general bodily discomfort.
One good thing: I took a nap on my new mattress (on top of a "made" bed, that is) yesterday afternoon. Slept soundly for two hours and awakened refreshed and ready to prep a bit of early dinner.
Had spaghetti.
-
At work today.
Ho-hum.
-
Or, as Jack Randall would say:
"Oh, well..."
-
Jack: What a wonderfully large family on your mother's side. My father had eight brothers and sisters. It was very sad when they began going...especially the "favorites".
Condolences to your family. Always remember that your loved ones will be saving you a place when it's your time to cross over!
-
Hello from Washington, DC (normally I post from Virginia). I'll try to post from home tonight. Isn't it strange that only three of us are having problems logging on?
-
Nice photo, DR JRand64. Condolences to your family.
-
I'd hate to miss the Oscar partay!
-
Enjoyed the notes today, BK!
-
Thanks for the kind thoughts, everyone! They are very much appreciated.

Wow...eight kids. My dad is one of six. I only have my sister. I can't imagine being part of a large family like that. I know a couple of brothers who are part of 14, count 'em 14 siblings, and all lived into adulthood.

Oh, my! That's an interesting piece. Going through some of her (Barbara Hannigan) YouTube clips, she also conducts (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qyJKAccDWc).
Also, she actually sang and conducted THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFFpzip-SZk) version of "Mysteries of the Macabre" AND THIS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZKaMuALMMY) version...talk about talented!

I'm up, I'm up and have been so since eleven, but doing stuff on the iPad from bed. Now I must go bank and pick up packages.
-
When I first glanced at today's column title, I read "The Nostalgia Grits".
Now I am nostalgic for grits.
Darn.
-
RonP, hope you are feeling better.
-
Got in a long walk on the beach today. Despite truly heavy winds, there were para-surfers dancing across the tops of waves. Beautiful sight to see. They were moving fast and managing to keep their keep on their boards and parachutes above the water. The sound of the crashing waves was music to my whole body. I didn't try to get into the water, but it was good to just breathe in the sea air.

DR SINGDAW that clip was most interesting.....and entertaining.....
Not my favorite piece......the music, I mean.

Then I got a message on BOOKFACE from Brad, my cousin Lita's husband telling me that Lita had been in the hospital since Wednesday because they thought she had congestive heart failure.
She didn't want anyone to know because she didn't want us to worry.
He gave us a phone number.....it was a PM so it only came to me....so I called her up and said WHAT THE HELL?????
She is okay, they drained a lot of fluid, and they say they can control it with meds and diet.....
So.....there you are. Everybody hug everybody and call everyone you love and let them know.
-
Well, I'm off to see some friends in a production of THE LYONS by Nicky Silver.
-
For those of you in cold-plagued areas, it is currently 65 degrees in Oakland. It also feels like 65.
-
Wellwhaddayaknow.
Page tree!
-
Got some Twilight Time blu rays in today's mail: Love and Death, The Bride Wore Black and Stormy Weather.
-
This work day ain't movin' fast enough.

Finally finished the packaging for our next release - I'll just spill it and say the complete (and I do mean complete) soundtrack to Stormy Weather, including a whole slew of stuff that wasn't on the previous CD release, which has been OOP for twenty years. This also sounds a thousand times better. We have the bonus material from the previous CD, but also unearthed and additional four songs that were recorded but not used in the final film, including two sung by Cab Calloway. This was a bit of a nightmare, as there's no real paperwork for anything, especially the cut stuff. Calloway's voice I recognized but there are two others where we just won't list the vocalist, even though I'm fairly certain who one of them is for sure. A two CD set that is as good as anything we've released. Getting all the writers and publishers sorted out is what took so many hours today, but it's DONE!
-
Richard and I left here at noon and went to the southernmost branch of my former employer to return some books and pick up some new ones. Had a nice lunch at Red Lobster and then went to visit Mom. Shopped at Kroger with all the other Chicken Littles and now we're hunkered down for the next snowpocalypse.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening. Home from work, putting the finishing touches on the apartment as tomorrow I'm off to Las Vegas for a lovely birthday weekend with a married woman! <gasp> But the highlight of the weekend...
-
wait for it....

I'm seeing Neil Sedaka tomorrow night!!!
Neil Sedaka is my idol. I've been a fan since I was 5 or 6. In fact, I saw him TWICE when I was 6 or 7 or something like that, at the now very much long gone Circle Star Theatre. I'm hoping to get a picture and an autograph from him. I wish I had a chance to sit down and chat with him and tell him how much he's influenced me as a musician.
-
In the meantime, I'll be heading over to El Torito, where I'm having a Birthday Happy Hour. Hopefully someone will show up!!

I shall now be on my way to the theater. Have no idea how big our audience is for tonight. Hopefully it will be decent.
-
I want that Stormy Weather CD.
-
Have fun in Vegas, Matthew.

-
Oh no. Another long night ahead!
-
Well, I won't be able to help for the next several hours.
-
I'm going to see a staged reading of "Angels In America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches" at Olympia Little Theatre.
-
The director of "Laughing Stock" (in which I was cast) is playing Roy Cohn.
-
They're going to do "Part 2: Perestroika" next weekend.
-
They're selling the tickets for each part separately.
-
So...be back later!
-
;D
-
I know I shouldn't complain that is only 40 degrees, as other are getting it worse, but I never realize how ill equipped I am for this cold weather.
LOL~ we hit 40 today and I was running around without my coat. It really does depend on what you are used to
-
Tonight I went to The Imitation Game It was a very good movie.
-
It's funny, I usually set out on a mission to see all the Oscar nominated films and make a real game of it. This year I didn't really try until this week and I've seen most of the big ones Tomorrow I'm going to see American Sniper. I've decided I really want to see it
-
Has the problem for Laura with getting on this here site been solved yet? I miss her
-
The past few days have been ridiculous however a major issue has been resolved much to my relief
-
(((Jack))))
I am so sorry about your Aunty Edith, vibes of comfort to you and all who love her
-
it is bitter cold out there
-
I am glad I am in here
-
got home from work around 9:30 - Vixdad and I went to the local diner for dinner
-
I had my beloved Rustic Chicken Pannini (sans the paninni, sans the pannini as is my wont) and substituted a baked potato for the french fries
-
the chicken panini innards consist of
grilled chicken breast, asparagus, roasted red peppers, melted mozzarella and balsamic vinagarette
-
It is delicious
-
you would think after being away for a couple of days I would have interesting things to impart
-
however you would be wrong to think that
-
as I have gone on to prove by the drivel which I am now posting
-
Maybe Cilla will post something interesting to avoid this page being solely full of vixmomdrivel
-
all by myself
-
don't wanna beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
-
all by myself
-
anymooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooore
-
And I am back from a very amusing play.
-
Following which, a lovely Shepherd's Pie was one of the lovely items served at the opening night par-tay. It would be folly to ask me how many helpings of it I put away. Pure folly.
-
BK, that CD sounds like such a winner.
-
I just received the Blu-ray, too. Won't have time to watch it for a couple of days.
-
DR Matthew, don't forget -- what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!!!
-
Unless I have been misinformed.
-
I wouldn't know.
-
I, too, miss Laura and Kerry.
-
Just finished my work. And now I can retire.
-
It's easy to work when you have the beach outside your window.
-
Good night, all.
-
John, don't leave!
-
Why do men always run from me?
-
But my dear friend, Vixmom, is still here.
-
One more.

-
That doesn't mean quite the same thing when you are retired.
-
Half the time I have no idea what day it is.
-
I was looking forward to watching GRIMM tonight, but it was replaced with Saturday Night Live repeat from Sunday.
-
i sorry O fell asleep
-
Good evening TCB
-
going to bed soup kitchen tomorrow
-
IS everyone thinking of fun word games to play for the Oscars?
-
Going to bed in a soup kitchen?
-
I'm about to go up to bed too.
-
but not in a soup kitchen
-
i sorry O fell asleep
I figured that.
-
When I left for the movie tonight there were three deer just sitting in my yard, like they owned the place
-
Good evening TCB
Hi Cilla!
-
The cats are up all night watching the deer, raccoons and various other wild life.
-
Paul's sister lives fairly close to me, she's got a yard full of wild turkeys - as in the birds
-
I think I prefer deer
-
but not in a soup kitchen
Depends on the flavor of the soup.
-
I put out bird food when it's really cold and if it's cold and snowy I throw out some corn on the cob for them.....er for the squirrels....it's illegal to feed the deer in the city limits
-
Paul's sister lives fairly close to me, she's got a yard full of wild turkeys - as in the birds
Better than a yard full of whiskey.
-
I ended up having a very good week this week. Sort of balances out the very bad week I had last week. I can live with that
-
I applied for an opening on our public museum board of trustees. Don't know if I'll get it, but thought it would be interesting. I love history and our museum system.
-
Heck, I haven't gotten anything else I applied for lately.....pretty funny when I think of it.
-

-
Boy, Cilla, you type fast.
-
So, Vixmom is sleeping on her computer?
-
Cilla? Are you still here?
-
Are we doing Films as food on Sunday?
-
Just one more.
-
Page Six
-
Oh, maybe Cilla went to bed.
-
All alone.
-
Sorry, I was reading about the real Alan Turing after watching The Imitation Game tonight
-
I hope BK had a great show tonight.
-
But now I'm off to get some sleep.
-
Night TCB
-
Sorry, I was reading about the real Alan Turing after watching The Imitation Game tonight
An interesting man.
-
Night Cilla.
-
I'm going to see a staged reading of "Angels In America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches" at Olympia Little Theatre.
Wow! What a great show! It was very bare-bones, and the actors carried their scripts, but they barely needed them. They acted the hell out of the show.
-
I'd seen it before, but it was 20 years ago at Seattle's Intiman Theatre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intiman_Theatre_Festival). According to their Wikipedia page:
In 1994, Intiman became the first regional theatre company in the country to be awarded the rights to produce Tony Kushner's Tony- and Pulitzer-winning two-part epic Angels in America. Part One: Millennium Approaches closed Intiman's 1994 season, and Part Two: Perestroika opened the 1995 season. Directed by [artistic director, Warner] Shook, the complete Angels in America was the most commercially successful production ever to be produced at the theatre, reaching more than 63,000 attendees over its two-year run.
-
The past few days have been ridiculous however a major issue has been resolved much to my relief
Very good news, Vixmom!
-
Half the time I have no idea what day it is.
It's nothing to worry about...my parents have that same problem.
;)
-
IS everyone thinking of fun word games to play for the Oscars?
And by "word," you really mean "drinking," right?
;)
-
I applied for an opening on our public museum board of trustees. Don't know if I'll get it, but thought it would be interesting. I love history and our museum system.

Ditto!!

Okay...I quickly read through this series of posts:

I think I prefer deer

Tomorrow, I'm going to see a matinee of "The Monster Under the Bed (http://olyft.org/the-monster-under-the-bed/)" by Olympia Family Theater. They do theater for children. I've run the sound for four of their shows. I have several friends in the show, so I'm excited to see it.
