Title: THE NIGHT THAT GOT AWAY
Post by: bk on March 02, 2015, 12:38:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes got away and then came back, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they got away with the night and haven't been seen since.

Speaking of THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE, one of my early publicity clients was actor Reed Hadley, probably best known for his TV series, RACKET SQUAD, but also his impressive voice that can be heard narrating such classic films as THE HOUSE ON 92nd STREET and BOOMERANG.

Here's a brief excerpt from my 2nd memoir, LIFE, LIBERTY & THE PURSUIT OF HOLLYWOOD:

"When Reed came to me, he was frustrated. He hadn’t worked much during the past few years and he was particularly unhappy with his last job, the role of mobster 'Hymie Weiss' in THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE (1967), a film directed by my future boss, Roger Corman. 'Would you believe,' Reed said to me, 'with my trained voice, I don’t have one line in the picture?'

"He was right. He appeared in two scenes. In one, he was sitting in a car and waved to somebody and, in the other; he’s shot down in the street."

Good morning, all!  I love the poster; I'm s used to the blue of the riginal logo that the reds, which remind me of War of the Worlds, are really vivid. I love my poster credit, but I am very proud of my work on this show.  It was not only a needed break from the family tensions of my dad's last round of cancer in December 2006, but it's such a brilliant piece of lunacy. I still laugh out loud remembering bits of BK's staging and how funny it all was.

Today, I finish up my taxes. If I finish early in the day, I have some tidying up to do and a run to 86th Street to a market, not the corner bodega, for some things.

Last night, I had a very intense dream in which I said goodbye to a very dear friend I've not seen in years since he relocated to Los Angeles. We were very close during the 1980s and early 90s, when he moved.  While he was in AMADEUS, we'd meet after the show and I'd listen to him cry over his latest romantic disasters and his poor choice of girlfriends. Since my friend Alan Freeman died in March 2014, I'm hoping that this dream was a mashup of several friends I've not seen in some time and not a visitation from someone dying.

Good morning, all.

I probably said this about last week's storm, but this snow is really the straw the broke the camel's back.  There has been so much loose, then packed down, snow, that my driveway and some back roads are getting too thick with ice.  I was snow-blowing an emergency set of tracks this morning, and at one point going uphill both the snow blower and I were stopped dead in our tracks.  There was simply no way to move.  Of course I finally inched our way out of that nasty stretch, but it's still a freaking disaster, even with salt and sand thrown down over it.

Since my friend Alan Freeman died in March 2014, I'm hoping that this dream was a mashup of several friends I've not seen in some time and not a visitation from someone dying.

My college roommate
was in the original Broadway cast of AMADEUS.
He may know my friend, who has emailed me that he is okay.  I am very happy about that

Good news :)

Monday morning greetings!  Because I'm sick of winter, I'm doing some California Dreamin' today, bringing a June trip into a bit more focus.  I will be attending the AAUW national convention in San Diego June 18-21 and ALA in San Francisco June 26-30.  Richard and I will meet at SFO on the 22nd and we'll spend that week in Monterey and environs before heading to ALA on Friday.  I've been registered for the conferences since before Christmas and today I'm finishing up hotel reservations.  I'll wait a bit before making nonrefundable plane reservations.

At least it is in late June because early June can be damp & chilly on the coast.  Be prepared with some warmer clothes.  Whatever the weather is, the coast will be beautiful.

Yes, the Californians I talked to in Chicago said I'd need 2 different wardrobes for San Diego and San Francisco.  I'm thinking layers...

If you want to quickly calculate the number of calendar days between two dates, here is a website that will save you some time:
http://www.timeanddate.com/date/duration.html

I was born on May 5, 1966, so this is how old I am (including today):

From and including: Thursday, May 5, 1966
To and including: Monday, March 2, 2015

Result: 17,834 days
It is 17,834 days from the start date to the end date, end date included
Or 48 years, 9 months, 26 days including the end date

Alternative time units:

17,834 days can be converted to one of these units:
◾1,540,857,600 seconds
◾25,680,960 minutes
◾428,016 hours
◾17,834 days
◾2547 weeks and 5 days

Oops. I thought you might have 7. I've never used 8 and I know the changes to the screen are enough that I couldn't tell you where things might be. You might even have an early version of 8 which did away with the start button completely.

Crazy day. Lots of work, then an evening of ushering.
Title: Re: THE NIGHT THAT GOT AWAY
Post by: John G. on March 02, 2015, 09:07:30 PM
One of the benefits of ushering is that sometimes you get to be in the theater during the sound check. Before his concert tonight, Lang Lang just played around on the piano for about 45 minutes and just for the 15 or so ushers in the theater. We were all rapt as he went through the Bach Italian Concerto, a Chopin Schertzo and some stuff that he's apparently working on, because he had the scores handy. He played so long that they were afraid he was going to miss the 7:30 start time.

But he disappeared into the wings, changed clothes and came out and played 2.5 hours of incredible music. He changed the way he played the Bach. In the sound check, the andante movement was faster, almost playful. In concert, it was very studied and deliberate.

I won't forget that concert for quite a while. Just a thrill.

He also played Tchaikovsky's "The Seasons," which I was unfamiliar with but also really enjoyed.

This morning the counts were down to the high end of normal (120), but by afternoon they were up over 250.  The only thing she had to eat was the hospital's diabetic breakfast; and only a few bites of that.
