Well, you've read the notes, the notes were logy, and now it is time for you to post until the logy cows come home.

Re: the R rating mentioned in today's note. My assumptions

I'm going to assume that it was because of the relationship between an adult and 15 year old. It may be also for the C word.

Also the producers may not have minded it being an R rated film (which they could have appealed) thinking it might have drawn a bigger audience than a PG-13 with the story

Good morning, all!  I am awake, having my first cup of coffee, and pondering the day's events.

I will head down to Chelsea Music around 10:15.  That gives me two hours here to create some mischief.

When the performers who made Las Vegas what it once was were still l alive, there was something to see in Las Vegas.  And even though a little bit of Las Vegas went a long way with me, it was like nowhere else.  Now, everywhere is like Las Vegas, which isn't saying much.

TOD:

I never liked Vegas.  It's not my scene.

I've been there many times, almost always with a publicity client or on some other kind of business.

Certainly the most memorable was when I was representing Stanley Myron Handelman and he opened for Sinatra at Caesar's Palace.  The opening night after party was sensational - Burt Lancaster, Yul Brynner, Rod Steiger, Sammy Davis, Jr. and, of course, the Chairman of the Board.

DR Elmore, sorry, no city directories at the book sale...

City directories can be worth their weight in gold!

My Ohio treasures are several Columbus ones spanning the years I lived there, an Ashland one, and a Cleveland one.  The most elusive one on my want list has been a Cleveland-East Suburbs, ca-1970-72.

I have a few for my other locales, too.  I guess I found half of them on eBay, some from library sales, and a couple from bookstores.  The Ohio Book Store in downtown Cincinnati had several from around the region last time I browsed in there.  (I need to make it a point to get in there again when I'm over there in May.)

Back from a quick round of grocery shopping and a quick stop into the local Savers (thrift shop) to see what's on the CD shelves.  Not much.  But I did come out with a recording of THE THREEPENNY OPERA by HK Gruber and the Ensemble Modern, of which I know nothing, so I'm looking forward to giving it a spin.

My cousin is bringing family photos....such as the potato chip bag photo I posted last week....so much time will be spent studying and scanning them.

TOD:  I've been to Las Vegas many times, though it's not exactly a favorite place of mine.  The first time was to see Barbra's return to the concert stage on New Year's 1994.  Then her Millennium concert on both Dec. 31, 1999 and Jan. 1, 2000.  And then my other favorite singer did Phantom for 2 years and I saw that show 6 times, I think.

My first trip to Vegas was in 1973.  I thought it was earlier, however, that is the year MGM opened and I remember walking around for the pre-opening.  It was a zoo and I got yelled at by a security guard for looking so young and forcing him to waste his time checking my i.d.   REALLY!

Well, the good news I had hoped to have this week is a bust. I appreciate your vibes, though!

Much as I find the work I am doing now fulfilling, it is funded by state grants, so never a sure or steady thing. A posting came up recently for what would have been a dream job for me. I went through several rounds of interviews, and it finally came down to me and one other candidate. This afternoon, I learned that the job has been offered to the other candidate. I am very disappointed, but it was still a good experience to go through. I hate selling myself, but I guess it is good to have to learn how to do that under pressure every now and then.

The Luxor was so dark that I felt all the lights were dim so you wouldn't see how cheap it is.

Did some of my first ever listening to Kander and Ebb's ZORBA this afternoon.  I had never been drawn to it much as a young'un, so the LP languished on the shelf.  The music is wonderful, but I haven't delved into story, characters, or anything else yet.  But soon.

BK:  Is this Capitol recording one you'd have an interest in releasing?  The LP isn't bad, but it sure isn't stupendous either.  While listening, I could only think how much more beautiful and involving it could be.

Chas I have a Savers nearby as well - my last trip I was able to buy several BBC  produced  Gilbert & Sullivan operettas for $2 a piece

Nice find!  I've gotten lucky there a few times with movies, CDs, and books.

I wonder if that's like our Hastings stores down here.

Singdaw I am so sorry - but the fact that it came to the two of you is very impressive  and I am sure if another opening comes along they will think of you

Vixmom, I can sympathize with your evening agenda. After an hour of dance, I had a church meeting that lasted much longer than a hour. And for no reason.

well we knew it would be a long meeting we had a special guest that gave an hour long presentation followed by a
Q& A before our regular council meeting .  It was actually very interesting

In the department of the completely unnecessary: Dumbo is being remade. By Tim Burton.

Whatever will Johnny Depp play in that?

Actually, don't tell me.  I'm fine without knowing.

I suspect Elmore will be familiar with this series  the CD , produced by Acorn Media , the BBC series is from  1982 .  They contain the full libretto in a full colour  5 X 7 booklet with print in a font size  even these bat blind eyes can read without straining

I don't have the others nearby (too lazy to get up and check)  but  The Mikado says on;y that it features  the London Symphony Orchestra  and the Ambrosian Opera Chorus.  I suspect they were produced on a BBC  soundstage

I am sorry about the job, SingSong.  Believe me, your dream job is still out there.

Chas, Zorba was next in line for remixing - the LP and CD are horridly mixed.  But my guy left and it became impossible.  Thank heavens Follies happened when it did.

I am glad that some of you enjoyed the story of Jeff Smith.  The other details are a little too sordid for this site, and it really isn't my story to tell.

Kevin, didn't you love the Vegas version of PHANTOM?  I don't mean just the hunk playing the Phantom, but the entire production.  I wished I had seen it more than once.  Also, I wish there was a DVD of the show (for educational purposes only).  I am sure I could learn a lot from seeing that DVD!
